After an extended period of quiet, the special committee for investigating the attacks in Benghazi may be readying for action.

Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C. announced Friday he has hired a retired three-star general to lead the panel’s legal team.

Lt. Gen. Dana K. Chipman was the senior military lawyer for the Army for four years as judge advocate general at the Pentagon, Gowdy’s office said. He retired last November after 33 years on active duty.

Gowdy lauded his new chief counsel as someone with character and integrity, along with solid legal credentials, saying Chipman has “dedicated his professional life to the apolitical service to our country and reached the highest levels of his profession.”

Gowdy added in a statement, “If you are serious about conducting a fair, thorough, fact-centric investigation devoid of gratuitous partisanship, it stands to reason you would select someone with those same characteristics to lead the investigation.”

Chipman testified on the issue of sexual assault in the military before the Senate Armed Services Committee in June 2013.

The Air Force Times first reported the hire, and noted that ranking Democrat Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland will hire his own staff for the minority side. Cummings’ office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Republicans formed the committee to investigate the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, earlier this year, but have little to show for the effort. Democrats considered protesting what they called a political sideshow given the number of investigations already conducted, but ultimately named five panel members.

As CQ Roll Call reported in July, only about half of the expected 30 hires had been made because of security clearance backlogs. Republicans provided $3.3 million for the 12-member Benghazi committee to spend by the end of the year, more than the budgets of at least two House standing committees. The panel can keep working in 2015 with a renewed budget.

The committee plans to hold a first public hearing in September.

    • erick

I wonder if the Benghazi committee will reveal that the Benghazi attack was planned by Osama Darrel Issa the republican Taliban? Osama Darrell Issa the republican Taliban was Bin Laden’s top Arab terrorist.

Examples you requested, compliments from “DIRTY” Harry Reid… What’s funny is that the left and this current administration labels anyone who opposes them as a “RACIST” (how convenient from an overly played card) and then try to blame the HOUSE and label them as the “do nothing congress” but when in FACT it is “Harry Reid who heads Senate that is the PROBLEM… What’s even funnier is that 352 good bills that were all voted on and agreed to by members of both parties “bi-partisan”(yes, there are good people on both sides) with 55% of those bills being introduced by Democrats and yet the LEFT still wants to blame the HOUSE !?!?? All the senate has managed to do is let old DIRTY Harry Reid stonewall and hinder forward progress in passing them… Research it for yourself and you will find more examples of what you asked for in the first place.

          • Little_Tin_God

That’s hardly “graft and corruption” of Democrats. Besides, most of the bills Reid is “sitting on” don’t really do much to help the American people. Mostly they help the already rich get richer. And they were passed in the House with mostly GOP votes and hardly were they passed in a bi-partisan manner.

          • Arrow_Of_Truth

That’s exactly the response that I would expect from a “Progressive Liberal Lefty”… One of those bills is based on a pipeline project that would connect Canda, US, and Mexico which would supply thousands of jobs for Americans in the U.S. and was backed up and voted on by BOTH parties just waiting for “Dirty Harry Reid” to pass it through. I don’t much believe in the petrol-dollar for it’s my opinion that fossil fuels are obsolete and should have evolved into what we all know already exists (like water/hydrogen combustion engines, etc, etc) but that doesn’t change the fact that passing this would in FACT help out many of Americans find work which is greatly needed in our country. Liberalism- Is a disease in which the overly politically correct affected cannot accept responsibilities for one’s failures and denies truths to one self until they themselves believe their own lies and if that fails then defamation of character through racsim shall be the final card played. Deny , deny, deny, and “everyone” is a racist for not agreeing with us!?!? We get it, and understand the diagnosis that affects so many….

          • Little_Tin_God

That pipeline would provide thousands of TEMPORARY jobs and would end up costing more than it would bring in because of the constant clean up costs of oil leaks and spills. Try again.

          • Arrow_Of_Truth

Try again ? haha (smh , Liberals !?!?) You at least admit it would bring jobs, but from your statement I can see that you have absolutely NO EXPERIENCE in the oilfield and have no idea the amount of man power and hours it takes to construct and maintain projects of the oilfield/refinery nature. Let me educate you LEFTY, but first let me just say that you are “assuming” a ludicrous amount of an oil spill to out weigh the cost of profit margins and man-power. Before projects in the oilfield are conducted there are many different fields who get involved and here are just a few for example: (Hundreds of) – surveyors , engineers, welders, drillers, roughnecks, roustabouts, pumpers, safey coordinators, heavy machine operators, etc etc.. The point is that this will create alot of jobs from the NORTH to the SOUTHERN border of the U.S. in which there would be a considerable number of sustainable jobs from state to state and at the same time stimulating those economies within those states in which this massive pipeline project would run through since maintaining even projects of a smaller scale are a FULL TIME JOB. I’m not saying that spills will not happen, spills happen everywhere (even at your favorite restaurant) but this would also create more jobs as well and to suggest that the jobs would be temporary and that clean-up from hypothetical massive oil spills would out weigh the profit margins is ridiculous and is wishful thinking to further back your null and void position. None of this really matters though since your boy “Dirty Harry Reid” is the one preventing any real forward progress on this issue. Also, I’ve come to find out that most liberals have a percentage of “troll” in them because of statements that serve no purpose but to deter from a rational idea so that leaves me to the conclusion that you are in fact (85% Liberal Progressive Lefty) and (15% TROLL)… Stay out of the sun or you may turn into stone…..

    • queer_america

Hey A$$ hole ! Why is it when the dems are scalp hunting republicans there are never enough investigations?

      • Little_Tin_God

Thank you. You’ve just proven my point.

  • Packard Day

The Obama Administration has had so many scandals involving both incompetence and systemic corruption these past five years, I feel like I am living back in Detroit in the late 1990’s under the now incarcerated Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick. You almost need a program to keep the scandals separated.

So if anyone knows, where does the Benghazi brooha sit in relation to the IRS, the NSA, the VA, the perjury before congress of Attorney General Eric Holder and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, Fast & Furious, the CIA, the SEC, the New Black Panther Party voter intimidation case, HHS (Obamacare), Homeland Security, the Secret Service, the unauthorized war on Libya, GITMO/Bergdahl swaps, immigration on southern border, Social Security, the EPA, the CDC, the US Post Office?

Aside from the benefits given to the “Washington DC/Wall Street Patriot Class” and other members in the country’s top 10%, is this there any part of the federal government that is working anymore? Is there any part that is serving the bottom 90%?

  • James Hall

Oh yes with IS on the march let’s talk Benghazi. Teatrash keep up please.

  • Katness Everdean

To be honest, Obama seems pretty delusional.

  • Leftcoastrocky

“The House Intelligence Committee … concluded that there was no deliberate wrongdoing by the Obama administration in the 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, … the report “confirms that no one was deliberately misled, no military assets were withheld and no stand-down order to U.S. forces was given.”

so Gowdy’s commission is a big waste of time and money

  • Barney Ross

Obama is a delusional marxist who intentionally causes chaos to advance his own destructive agenda.
