David Stewart will be Speaker John A. Boehner’s next policy director.
Boehner made the move just a day after he announced that his current policy director, Brett Loper, would be leaving Boehnerland to head lobbying efforts at American Express.
On Tuesday, Boehner issued a press release lauding Stewart, noting that he has “great respect for his counsel and his expertise.”
“He is a dedicated professional who brings to his new role a wealth of experience dealing with the big challenges facing our country, from trade and pension issues to tax and entitlement reform,” Boehner said. “David is already a critical member of my team, and I’m pleased he has agreed to serve as our new policy director.”
Stewart currently serves as the Ohio Republican’s top economic policy adviser, a position he has held since 2008.
Stewart did take a leave of absence last year to serve as economic policy director to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign. In that capacity, he also served as the policy director for vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis.
