Following the resignation Friday morning of Veterans’ Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki, Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, criticized President Barack Obama again for not doing more to solve problems surrounding the scheduling system and waiting lists at the Phoenix VA Health Care System.

“[Shinseki's] resignation, though, does not absolve the president of his responsibility to step in and make things right for our veterans,” Boehner said during a Friday afternoon news conference. “Business as usual cannot continue. And until the president outlines a vision and an effective plan for addressing the broad dysfunction at the VA, today’s announcement really changes nothing. One personnel change cannot be used as an excuse to paper over a systemic problem.”

Pressure mounted throughout the week for Shinseki to step down, with more than 100 lawmakers calling for him to go by Friday. However, Boehner refuted the notion that politics led to his resignation.

“I think there’s broad bipartisan concern about what’s happening at the VA and the treatment that’s being denied to our veterans.”

SENATOR JOHN BOEHNER IS A SAD EXCUSE FOR A POLITICIAN AND A HUMAN BEING IF EVER THERE WAS. HE HAS SINGLE HANDEDLY DESTROYED THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES WITHOUT UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSON BENEFITS SINCE LATE LAST DECEMBER. HE HAS USED HIS POWER IN OFFICE TO DELAY AND POSTPONE THE EXTENSION VOTE IN THE SENATE UNTIL IT BECAME TOO LATE TO PASS IT IN TIME. THIS WAS AN INTENTIONAL MOVE ON HIS PART AND OF THOSE REPUBLICANS THAT FOLLOW HIS EXAMPLE. SINCE LAST DECEMBER, MILLIONS HAVE FACED EVICTIONS, HOME FORECLOSURES, BANKRUPTCY, AND HOMELESSNESS, WITH EVERY PASSING MONTH THAT WENT BY WITHOUT THE BILL. EVEN THOUGH A FOREIGN AID BILL WAS PASSED DURING THIS TIME, FOR THE UKRAINE, WORTH BILLIONS OF TAX PAYER’S DOLLARS, NO HELP WAS GIVEN TO THESE UNFORTUNATE AMERICANS WITHOUT BENEFITS. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE CLEARLY SHOWN FOR WHOM THEY WORK FOR, AND FOR WHOM THEY SERVE… AND IT’S NOT YOU OR ME. THE REPUBLICANS WORK FOR SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS AND CORPORATE AMERICA ONLY. MANY FAMILIES ARE STILL STRUGGLING AND FAILING FINANCIALLY DUE TO THE EXTENSION BILL NOT BEING PASSED. THIS IS TRULY A CRIME AGAINST THE POOR AND UNEMPLOYED IN OUR COUNTRY, AND I HOPE THAT EVERYONE AFFECTED WILL VOTE THEM ALL OUT OF OFFICE IN THE COMING ELECTIONS.

I take Boehner’s point which is, the real problem is in the nature of bureaucracies. However, Shinseki’s resignation makes it more difficult for the WH to claim that there are no systemic problems with government run health care.

  • America first, not “allies”

Can’t help but to not assume that scandals not involving any White House support are pressed heavily for answers while others who most likely had some sort of White House involvement are given safe shelter. Benghazi, IRS, disclosure of sensitive information (putting Americans at risk), Obamacare’s lack of proper planning, MO’s “WTF lunch planning” in our schools… the list is a long one folks. White House throws us a bone when they have nothing to lose, clearly showing that we as Americans are cared less for than we think. Just look at UI’s priority level.

On October 2nd, 2013 the House passed H.J. Res. 71 to allow the city of DC to continue operating with its own funding.Once again, Harry Reid and Senate democrats obstructed.

      Oh please.

My God. Didn’t Biehner’s House reject VA funding in February? Does he really think he can lie his way out of everything?

    • Layla

Sally, VA salaries in AZ are as high as $350,000. Exactly what funding is being cut? NOTHING has changed. Everything this administration touches turns ashes.

    • Layla

He is not as good at it as the administration. Needs more practice, I guess…

The VA has been a mess for decades. This is what happens when you leave politicians in office for decades. This Congress has trashed this country and is now killing our veterans and getting away with it. Next up will be you, the general population under Obamacare.

This President ran on promising to fix the VA and just like everything else he is doing, he failed.

Time to vote Congress out, both sides.
