House Appropriations Chairman Harold Rogers filed a three-day continuing resolution on Friday to float the government a few extra days when current funding expires on Jan. 15.

But don’t think it’s because negotiators won’t be able to reach a deal by then on an omnibus, the Kentucky Republican told reporters.

Rogers said stakeholders are close to an agreement on the package of 12 appropriations bills, adding that he expects the measure to be unveiled “Sunday or Monday.” He predicted it would come up for a vote on the House floor either “Tuesday or Wednesday.”

Given the narrow time frame and the logistics involved in teeing up legislation for votes on each chamber’s floor, however, the CR would give members a cushion to avoid another government shutdown, plus buy stakeholders a little bit more time to tie up any loose ends.

The plan is for the House to vote Monday on the CR, Rogers said. The stopgap spending bill would extend through 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 18.

Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., confirmed on the House floor that the CR would likely come up under suspension of the rules.

  • Wise words …

If we had to wait until things could be made available for everyone, even the relative comfort of today’s poor could have never happened.
