Facing Immigration Revolt, Republicans Plan Vote to Ban ‘Administrative Amnesty’ (Updated)

Updated 11:07 p.m. | In a bid to shore up votes for their border supplemental, Republican leaders plan to give conservatives a vote Thursday prohibiting President Barack Obama from granting deportation relief to more illegal immigrants.

One vote will be on the $659 million appropriations bill aimed at curbing the flow of child migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, which includes policy riders that have alienated nearly all Democrats.

On the condition of that bill passing, members would then be allowed to a vote on standalone language prohibiting the expansion of Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program granting deportation relief and work permits to children brought here illegally by their parents. Republicans charge that DACA has acted as a magnet for unaccompanied children to come to the United States, although recent immigrants are not eligible.

Obama has promised to do all he can on his own on immigration by the end of the summer — and recent news reports that he may expand DACA’s deportation relief to as many as 5 million additional illegal immigrants have roiled the GOP.

Language targeting DACA would be similar to legislation pushed in the Senate by Texas Republican Ted Cruz, who, as negotiations were ongoing, was hosting conservative House members in his Capitol Hill office to discuss strategy on the matter. Cruz’s bill has a companion in the House, sponsored by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn. The legislation would prohibit the administration from granting deportation and other relief to any more illegal immigrants. It does not target people who have already enrolled in DACA.

The Rules Committee finalized the plan late Wednesday on a party line vote.

Ranking member Louise M. Slaughter, D-N.Y., offered an amendment to strike the language that would bar Obama from continuing or expanding DACA. It was defeated along party lines, 3-8.

Rules Democrat Jim McGovern of Massachusetts took issue with the timing of the proposal’s introduction, which coincided with Cruz’s dinner.

“Mr. Cruz has considerably more sway than some of the leaders in the House,” he quipped.

Rules Chairman Pete Sessions, R-Texas, took issue with the criticism, saying there has been “a continuing dialogue within our conference about what would and would not be in [the bill], and yesterday we became aware of what was in, and that created a set of circumstances where there were certain discussions.”

The plan would force conservatives — many of whom have a history of voting for amendments and then voting against the underlying bill — to back the supplemental first if they want a chance to constrain what some conservatives, like Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Alabama, have blasted as “administrative amnesty.”

The plan also came after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., roiled conservatives by suggesting the House’s bill could be used to conference a comprehensive immigration bill. That prompted Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, to blast Reid and vow no “immigration reform” of any kind would be added to the bill.

It’s not clear what will happen if the House border makes it to the Senate. Although the rule doesn’t combine the border bill with the DACA language — as leadership at one point considered — the White House earlier Wednesday threatened a veto of the border bill on its own.

Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Forum published a report earlier this year
about how Republicans have no electoral future as a conservative party if legal immigration remains at flood-tide. My colleague, Paul Nachman, Ph.D.’s 30 July 2014 blog entry makes available a convenient two pages of excerpts from the much longer report. These excerpts may be useful in acquainting Republican
candidates, officeholders, and activists with the political facts-of-life.

People who try to blame this on either side haven’t been paying attention. BOTH are responsible, as well as this administration. The American people are outraged over this issue and Congress refuses to notice. You do that at your own peril.

Our national security is being severely compromised and you do nothing to secure these borders.

The American people have plans for you at the ballot box, on Election Day.

      • DrGeneNelson

I believe that the big problem is that both parties (and even some third-party movements) have become extensions of the “Plutocrat party.” As an example, See the Sunshine Foundation’s March 25, 2013 report, “Untangling the Webs of Immigration Lobbying” We learn that “And in the five years (2008-2012) since the reform last died on the Senate floor, we count 6,712 quarterly lobbying reports filed by 678 lobbying organizations in 170 sectors mentioning 987 unique bills, associated with more than $1.5 billion in lobbying spending.” Since then, the estimated total has risen to about $2 billion.
Spending this lavishly means that these economic elites stand to benefit handsomely from immigration liberalization. How? The resultant immigration-stoked labor gluts across a broad spectrum of occupational titles ranging from medical doctor to unskilled labor reduces wages and benefits. Such a change benefits the Banker Class. Immigration – driven population increases also bid up the costs of the necessaries of life such as shelter, food, diapers, medical expenses, etc. The 1%ers benefit from those price increases.
There are some corrupt lobbyists such as felon Jack A. Abramoff involved in steering this tidal wave of lobbying dollars. Search by title for the PDF of the 2007 article, “The Greedy Gates Immigration Gambit” to learn more. Then join citizen empowerment groups such as NumbersUSA dot com, FAIRUS dot org, and CAPSweb dot org to demand genuine immigration reform from our elected leaders.

“What we’re seeing is our Congress and national leadership dismantling our laws by not enforcing them. Lawlessness becomes the norm, just like Third World corruption. Illegal aliens now have more rights and privileges than Americans.
If you are an illegal alien, you can drive a car without a driver’s license or insurance. You may obtain medical care without paying. You may work without paying taxes. Your children enjoy free education at the expense of taxpaying

The illegal immigration problem was created in DC. It was intentionally created by dems and repubs. Now the repubs do not want to own up to it and dems claim they still support. The dems, who profess to support amnesty never brought it up during the time they controlled congress. The dems could have passed any amnesty bill they wanted and didn’t even bring it up. The dems did not need any repub votes. It was okay for Obamacare but not the illegals.

  • WeCometoThis

Kick them illegals out of my Country.

  • Nunaya Biddness III

No Candidate, regardless of Party, who supports Illegals or the businesses who hire them deserve our support or vote. Because the simple truth is, their actions prove they don’t support us.

Its past time we reminded those we send to Washington who they work for.

    • prado4587

We must condemn those who block buses and delay the deportation process

      • Nunaya Biddness III

Call your Congressman and Senators and let them know how you feel. Talk to your family and friends and make sure they call too. Do it now.

    • DrGeneNelson

The decisive defeat of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor by Professor Dave Brat in the June 10, 2014 Virginia primary was tightly coupled to Cantor’s advocacy for illegal aliens. This was a strong reminder that our elected Representatives are in Washington, DC to represent the national interest, not the special interests who may provide those leaders some “pieces of silver.”

    • SuzyQue

They work for themselves. We aren’t the electorate they want.

      • Nunaya Biddness III

I’v made four call today to Washington…We must all stand up and vocally and publicly show our support for those Representatives who represent us, and call out those who do not.

They need to know their vote will be remembered, and come November there will be a reckoning; one way or the other.

        • ninesixteen

Thanks! I will do the same today. If only we could convince many of the average people who don’t realize what is being done to them by their supposed representatives that they need to take action.

Here’s what The Hill has to say… House border bill in trouble
By Alexander Bolton – 07/30/14 09:56 PM EDT. This is the conclusion of the article…
Eleven conservatives met with Cruz over a pizza dinner Wednesday evening.
The other attendees were Reps. Steve King (R-Iowa), Kerry Bentivolio (R-Mich.), Jim Bridenstine (R-Okla.), Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), Todd Rokita (R-Ind.), Steve Stockman (R-Texas), Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and Blackburn.

Do or die. If the GOP decides illegal aliens are more important than American citizens, I will never vote Republican again.

    • SuzyQue

If that happens, your vote won’t count anyway. I think that’s sort of the point.

    • NOamnestyEVER

there’s no party, other than the MEXICAN FACIST PARTY of LA RAZA, which is funded by BARACK OBAMA with our tax dollars, pushing for AMNESTY, OPEN BORDERS, NO E-VERIFY than the DEMS!

“The principal beneficiaries of our current immigration policy are affluent Americans who hire immigrants at substandard wages for low-end work. Harvard economist George Borjas estimates that American workers
lose $190 billion annually in depressed wages caused by the constant flooding of the labor market at the low-wage end.” Christian Science Monitor

      • NOamnestyEVER

“King, R-Iowa, said proponents of immigration reform include “elitists who want cheap labor to clean their houses and mow their lawn,” business leaders who want to keep wages low and Democrats looking for more voters. You don’t sacrifice the rule of law,” King said, “so you can have undocumented Democrats.”

        • NOamnestyEVER

Illegal immigration is another matter entirely. With the state budget in tatters, millions of residents out of work and a state prison system strained by massive overcrowding, California simply cannot continue to ignore the strain that illegal immigration puts on our budget and economy. Illegal aliens cost taxpayers in our state billions of dollars each year. As economist Philip J. Romero concluded in a 2007 study, “illegal immigrants impose a ‘tax’ on legal California residents in the tens of billions of dollars.”

    • paulyz

The Socialist/Democrat Party has (already) decided Illegal aliens are more important that American Citizens!

Jose Herria emigrated illegally from Mexico to Stockton, Calif., in 1997 to work as a fruit picker. He brought with him his wife, Felipa, and three children, 19, 12 and 8 — all illegals. When Felipa gave birth to her fourth child, daughter Flor, the family had what is referred to as an “anchor baby” — an American citizen by birth who provided the entire Silverio clan a ticket to remain in the U.S. permanently.

whomever sponsored such laws are nothing but idiots, then there is the chain migration , another freebie for them, then there is reunification IN OUR COUNTRY and they get to stay here…I saw those that received reunification in 2013 and they were all old, so that means they get social security, not they have to be old to get it, because they don’t, we have to be old to get it

  • DrGeneNelson

I like NoAmnestyEver’s comments below. Please take a few minutes and call one or more U.S. Representatives immediately at (202) 24 – 3121 to OPPOSE H.R. 5230. The switchboard is being overwhelmed, so either call your local district office or wait on the line.

    • Jack MacMillan

That makes maybe one of us.

  • D. Mark

One thing the Citizens of the United States can do, is make sure everyone you hire uses E-Verify to make sure no illegal immigrants are doing jobs for you! Spread this throughout the United States and all of our Elected Officials could just go home, they do not enforce our immigration laws anyway!

  • Linda Scott

Voting in a seperate bill to the funding is just pointless. Do these reps believe that any of their constiuents are so STUPID that they believe they don’t know this? It’s just a sham vote! Use the power of the purse! You act like OBAMA is the one who decides if you stay in office NOT THE VOTERS!!

  • DrGeneNelson

I was listening to C-SPAN cover the deliberations and debate on H.R. 5230. After more than four hours of debate, and the exhaustion of time on both sides, a House rule was invoked and it was announced that consideration of H.R. 5230 was suspended. (I think this means that Speaker Boehner did not get the votes!)

    President Obama
is about to wreak havoc if the rumors are true? It is for a cost beyond imagination
that will create a division so wide between honest Americans and the Liberal
Progressives. If what is being whispered that this man id going to hand out
defacto work permits for 5-8 million illegal aliens who already squat illegally
in the United States. Alas it’s also favored by the corporate world for
discount labor, but it presses these uneducated, mostly foreign language people
to be a formidable force to vote only Democrat. However, if he uses his
presidential signature to give millions of illegal people a way to stay in America? The DACA (Dream Act) illegal
policy by Obama and his Imperial court are the direct cause of hundreds of
thousands of foreign nationals arriving here.

    But Obama
himself can be destabilized as the House has the “Power of the Purse” and they
can sever every cent to halt in its tracks any financial assistance to his
    potential Democratic hordes. Your voice
should be added to moderate Conservative, who are the glue that is the strength
of the National Tea Party. He adds further to the national poverty and he
dishonors his oath of allegiance to protect Americans, from enemies Domestic
and Foreign as proclaimed in the US Constitution. The fact that he might try to
issue work permits to foreign nationals, illustrates he doesn’t care about the
    millions of jobless.

    Save America: An administration
filled with corruption right down to Eric Holder Attorney General of the United States of
America. Obama’s presidency is awash in a sea of lies,
corruption, scandals and cover-ups to cover up other wrongdoings. We the People
deserve better than a president who left innocent Americans to be murdered in Benghazi, handed guns to
criminals in the fast and furious and granted untold numbers of criminal’s
defacto amnesty. This is Obama’s America. A country
economically devastated, a people lied to and oppressed. We must end this now.
Americans are growing very restless and angrier every day that President Obama
has desecrated the office of the President of the United States. The “imperial
president” must be stopped. Show your support for impeachment.

the real double layer fence complete with access roads between and overhanging
concertina razor wire. IT WAS NEVER BUILT. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX)
saw to that by amending the 2006 Secure Fence Act. Is this going to be the
Congressional law NOT amended, that puts these illegal aliens crossing now in
the same slot as Mexicans and Canadians? Incidentally—hundreds of thousands entering
illegally are teenagers ranging from 14 to 17; even higher in age. Many have
the tattoos of heinous gangs and because they never committed a crime in our
country, they are released into our society. The women many pregnant with a
child at their hip, are taking away from citizens hundreds of millions of
dollars in food stamps, housing and health care. Just the fact that the
Democrats and specifically led by Sen.
Harry Reid who refuses to bring any vote to the floor in any Conservative
issue. Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama

was stated today before the chamber that ICE offices and US Border Patrol have
been ordered not to detain anybody at the border by the supervisors, who get
    their directives from higher ups.

lurks around the corner. Obama has committed grave injustices. He left innocent
Americans to die in Benghazi…handed guns to
criminals in the fast and furious…let 36.000 criminals illegally out of
prison to roam our streets…and wants to grant amnesty to millions more
criminals. We should fear what’s next. Have you had enough? This President has
forced healthcare on a public that has failed. Neglect of our beloved military
veterans who died waiting for care. This administration Traded terrorists who
    hate America with a passion…for
one deserter. Obamas Perpetrators giving illegals a free pass to break the law.
Obama consistently and deliberately brings great harm to America and he must be

    Its unconstitutional
and a humiliation with deadly consequences. Demand Congress stops the death
sentence of the US. We need National TEA
PARTY candidates who will abide by the oath of allegiance to honor the Rule of
Law and the vision of our founders, the US Constitution. Check this site that has the phone Numbers
and Mailing Addresses of Members of Congress at: http://www.contactingthecongress/
to demand an end to illegal immigration and the dismantling of our military,
which is our lifeblood against our enemies. This is the number for the central
switchboard for Congress to address your grievances at 800—224-3121.

Is America crunching the numbers toward the billions in tax dollars being spent on initiatives outside the United States that have absolutely no ROI coming back to Americans? American taxes are being distributed like an OPEN CHECK BOOK. Where is anything being provided to MIDDLE CLASS AMERICANS (American small business) to rebuild and strengthen our own country? American small business is disappearing and American Middle Class is suffering the brunt of it all getting no support but more burden to bare as billions of tax dollars are being given to foreign agendas to support their stability/military/structure etc. Billions being spent without any return and we wonder why AMERICA GREAT AGAIN is not happening? If the billions going out were supporting our own country where would the United States be today? When spending produces more debt than what is being gained there is only one conclusion and it’s devastation and collapse. When is America going to start investing into our own people? America needs to support our own well being here at home and it could happen at a fraction of the funding being provided to other countries. How can America sustain if it’s not producing? Washington finds billions for foreign interests while Middle Class Americans pay the price for it all. Middle Class America also needs jobs and pay checks. America needs manufacturing/distribution/product development and producing to rebuild here at home and strengthen our own country again. The consequences of not putting back into our own economy will be devastating. Middle Class America is the core of our nation. We better start investing in our own core and initiatives or the fallout will come sooner than later. How many billions can be depleted from the United States before we feel and actually live the repercussions? Scott Cloran, Khwikball Inventor
