Pelosi Downplays Missing IRS Emails While Boehner Calls for Answers (Video)

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi doesn’t appear to think that there was foul play in the Internal Revenue Service’s misplacement of key emails from Lois Lerner, the ex-agency official at the center of the ongoing IRS scandal.

At her weekly press conference Thursday morning, the California Democrat said her takeaway from reports that Lerner’s emails have been lost forever was simply that the IRS needs to upgrade its technology infrastructure.

“What it convinces me of is they need a new technology system at the IRS,” Pelosi said, adding that Lerner’s emails were not the only ones missing after an alleged computer meltdown. “Reports all show that those responsible did not know about the years of the crashes of their systems until a couple of years later, so I think they need to upgrade their technology, get it right so there’s no suspicion about what agenda anyone might have.”

Pelosi also pointed out that the IRS has already turned over “something like 67,000 emails, so it’s not as if they are devoid of information.”

When asked about Pelosi’s comments, Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, was less forgiving of the IRS, saying that technology is the least of the agency’s problems and implied that the emails could have been destroyed on purpose.

“The president called this a phony scandal. But who could possibly believe that they lost two critical years of emails of the central figure in this investigation?” he asked.

“They need someone who will tell the truth,” he said, adding that there could be criminal wrongdoing. “I asked this a long time ago. I don’t want to know who was being investigated; I want to know who was going to jail. This is outrageous, and the White House has not lifted a finger to help us get to the bottom of this.”

House Democrats were concerned when they learned last year that the IRS was improperly targeting conservative outside groups seeking for tax-exempt, but have since been dismissive of what they call the House GOP’s “obsession” with drawing out its investigation. They place significant blame on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., for turning the probe into a “partisan witch hunt.”

We need to rename the democratic party to the obstructionist party,,.. Yea nancy they lost the emails on the servers because of the DOJ, not because of antiquated equipment,, why have they never had any problems with there computers until this investigation started.. They don’t ever seem to have a problem when it comes tax time !!!!!!!!,, Just during an investigation.

    • Thomasinwonderland

Everyone knows the email story is a lie. We know it, they know it, they know that we know it and they don’t care.

  • Whit_Chambers

In the long-standing tradition of the DemoNazi Party, Pelosi is a liar.

  • bflat879

I would love to remind Ms. Pelosi of a Democrat campaign, in 2006, talking about the culture of corruption. SHe was talking about a few congressmen, we’re talking about whole government agencies with the collusion of the White House and Democrats in Congress. It doesn’t get more corrupt than that.

  • califconserv

Pelosi’s position is, nothing new here, business as usual for government? You could produce 60,000 e-mails from everywhere else but not from those involved? That doesn’t sound wrong to you Nancy?

Recently there was a 60 Minutes segment that showed how our nuclear attack arsenal was being run by computers with floppy disks. Just business as usual for our government.

  • Thomasinwonderland

Pelosi downplays missing IRS emails-wow-who could have seen that coming?
Boehner calls for answers-good luck with that.

  • Marco64

    Oops! We targeted conservative groups.
Oops! It wasn’t just a couple rogue agents in Cincinnati.
Oops! We’ve only turned over a fraction of the documents Congress asked for.
Oops! We lost all our emails.

But it’s all just a phony scandal and there’s not one smidgeon of corruption here.

    • strongmind

your honor, I rest my case!

Article 2, Section 1 – Nixon Articles of Impeachment

    (1) He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, endeavored to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposes not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigation to be initiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner.

“Pelosi also pointed out that the IRS has already turned over “something like 67,000 emails, so it’s not as if they are devoid of information.””

Hey. Nixon turned over all but 18 minutes of tape.

  • Norma Munn

I assume if my simple computer system can cause utter chaos with my emails and serious losses of them, that an outdated system such as IRS has (as reported in the press over the years) can easily and frequently crash and destroy records. It is too easy to cry “cover up” rather than applying some common sense. Clearly Ms. Lerner’s emails are not the only ones lost — or at least not in any of the reporting I have seen.

    • UNCLE

Its true, there is a sucker born every minute.

    • maodeedee

Err…Someone just testified today that the hard drives were intentionally destroyed.
      Nice try, Democrat shill.

  • Lance Sjogren

Pelosi: You don’t think we’re incompetent enough to have just lost them accidentally?

  • PSGute

The IRS computer system can find every penny I have made in my life. They track all of my bank, investment and retirement accounts. They cross reference my taxes to my spouse’s and children’s to assure that deductions are not being duplicated. BUT they can’t find their own emails?
I buy a new laptop every other year. This means I have an ENTIRELY NEW hard drive each time. I don’t transfer legacy email when I update BECAUSE IT IS STORED ON THE EMAIL SERVER. You Don’t Lose Email When A Hard Drive Crashes.

    • geezer117

Pelosi admits they found 67,000 emails, but it’s only the ones pertaining to criminal activity that they have “lost”. Innocently, of course!

    • geezer117

Want to bet it has not also been “lost” on the server?

  • geezer117

Pelosi was in the forefront calling for a special prosecutor to find out who leaked Valerie Plame’s name to the press, as if that were somehow important. Now she is against a special prosecutor when we have clear evidence of IRS criminal actions, and some evidence of collusion with persons in the White House.

Will the Democratic Party ever be able to climb out the slime?

They turned over 67,000 emails. So the system wasn’t broken. But the emails for the executive, oh, the system was broken for THOSE emails. What a crock.

a new technology; why didn’t I think of that? Maybe because “more spending” is not my answer to actual problems, let alone to ones like this.

    • rs724503

They already spend almost $2 billion annually on IT at the IRS, so obviously the answer is a bigger IT budget.

Let’s start from the GIVEN that they are all hypocrites, the partisans on both sides.

Now that we don’t have to argue which side is more corrupt, let’s just talk about the violation of political liberties that occurs when it even APPEARS that the government is cracking down on grass roots dissent. To use the IRS as the instrument of this crackdown is perhaps the best argument for the abolition of the IRS and its intrusive role in our lives. There are better ways to raise revenue for the government than this highly contrived, complex and corrupt tax code, with the jackbooted IRS enforcers, who by virtue of their membership in government employee unions like SEIU are natural allies of the statist system.

After trying out several other explanations for the IRS scandal (e.g. rogue agents in Cincinnati, etc.) and then stonewalling all Congressional requests, now Obama has essentially “burned the tapes”, and is arguing against the appointment of a special prosecutor who would be free from Obama / Holder influence.

Americans, this is what tyranny looks like. We can either accept it, knowing there is a lot more to come (from both parties, when they have control of the executive branch), or we can oppose it, loudly and publicly, and save liberty for our children and grandchildren. It’s up to us to choose our future, and the decision is upon us, right now.

  • valwayne

Can you imagine what Pelosi would be saying if we had a Republican President in the White House, and it was left wing groups that had been targeted, and then suddenly 7 high officials had their hard drives crash, at almost the same time, and the hard drives were destroyed so nothing could be recovered, and the servers and backups were all wiped, in an agency that should save everything for years at least. She’d be frothing at the mouth like a RABID dog.

    • Mike Snoddy

Well there too busy worrying about the name of a football team, A bridge in NJ, Scott walker, and protecting Hillary.

    • David Eisenberg

I can imagine. That’s the problem with all people on the left and right. Both of you think the other side is always wrong or evil or stupid and then excuse the same behavior on your own side unless it starts hurting your own party to much and you need to throw someone under the bus. I only know very few of you who are at least cognizant of the fact that they do that and don’t care. That’s sad in its own way, but at least they are honest. Remember Henry Waxman’s witch hunts toward the Bush administration in 2007 and 2008? Henry demanded and got 22 million Bush emails. Maybe Camp or Issa need to pull a Waxman and subpoena the emails of all of the White House staff and appointees. I’d read Valerie Jarrett’s emails first.

it seems very interesting to me that the IRS has turned over 67,000 t0 75,000 emails. On what subjects? Are they relevant to this matter? There were that many people looking into shutting conservative organizations down? Or did the IRS send over that many emails on all subjects just to slow down the investigation?

  • HarshTimes

How bad is it when the low information left is reduced to defending, of all entities, the IRS?

  • kts0591

I’m just amazed how stupid the democrats think the American people are. No one who is thinking is going to believe this story. They look more guilty because of their action .

  • Chaz22

Of course Pelosi will reject the idea ; to believe it would be too Republican. She doesn’t care whether it is a case or not; truth is she just wants to be contrary–I’m not trying to be facetious ; that’s the way she is . She’s a glassy-eyed antagonist who promotes hate and bias –willfully .
My two-cents : while I do not have a possitive feeling about the IRS commisioner Mr. Koskinen , I think in a way he is a victim also, because he really believes what he says. He doesn’t know it but he was used ; certain people in the business hid behind his sterling reputation and took advantage of him to to get what they wanted .

  • Uncle Fester

How many people posting here have sent an email to their Reps and Senators demanding that they proceed with impeachment? Probably close to 1%. That’s the problem.
