Pelosi Backing ‘If You Like It’ Obamacare Fix (Updated)

Updated 11:15 a.m. | House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi plans to endorse a legislative fix to remedy President Barack Obama’s broken “if you like it, you can keep it” promise — even as the president is set to announce his own plan for the health care law this morning, a Democratic leadership aide confirmed to CQ Roll Call.

At her weekly news conference Thursday morning, the California Democrat said she wasn’t prepared to speak about Obama’s proposed fix until after White House officials briefed the full caucus at a closed-door meeting Thursday afternoon. She also wouldn’t explicitly support it.

Democrats are likely to pursue a two-pronged strategy that includes pushing Obama’s plan along with a proposal from inside the House Democratic Caucus.

Pelosi likened it to having both “suspenders and a belt.”

At a Democratic whip meeting earlier on Thursday, Pelosi said she would put her weight behind a proposal being spearheaded by Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., sources confirmed. Miller’s proposal would mandate that insurance companies keep existing health insurance plans until the end of the Obamacare open enrollment period in March.

Pelosi and the White House remain opposed to the legislation coming to the floor on Friday sponsored by Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich., that would allow insurances to revive plans that don’t comply with the Affordable Care Act.

Miller’s plan may come to the floor for a vote on Friday in the form of the Democratic motion to recommit amending Upton’s bill, the Democratic leadership aide confirmed.

Pelosi announced her support for Miller’s proposal at the weekly Democratic whip meeting Thursday morning, hours before White House officials were due back on Capitol Hill to provide another briefing to members — Wednesday morning’s meeting with Obama administration aides was tense, as Democrats expressed anger and frustration over the rocky implementation of the health care law they had expended so much political capital to pass.

Her endorsement of the Miller plan also came shortly after she appeared at a forum sponsored by The Atlantic, where she said the White House expects to unveil its anticipated “administrative fix” proposal to address the millions of canceled insurance policies unanticipated by the American people. Obama was scheduled to make an announcement Thursday before noon.

“I would prefer an administrative fix because it could be done much more quickly without any accompanying agendas,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi added that “we have our own proposal which we think is really good.”

According to a source in the room at the closed-door whip meeting, Rep. Jerrod Nadler, D-N.Y., wondered whether Miller’s proposal was the right one, given that a short-term fix could put members back in the same place on March 31 as they are today.

Miller’s spokesman, in an email to CQ Roll Call, demurred when asked whether his boss’s plan was a done deal.

“Democrats are considering a variety of proposals to ensure policyholders … have an opportunity to continue their plans, without causing steep premium increases for those participating in the Marketplace the way the Upton bill clearly does.”

  • gerardharbison

If you like your plan, you can keep it…for 4 more months?

    I don’t think that’s much of a fix.

    • garry lafferty

The fix is for consumers to get educated on ACA. If your insurance company cancels your next step is to look at what ACA offers and compare to current policy. Don’t believe your insurance man or any one else including family. If there republican they don’t want ACA to work in most cases.

      • Charles

Yes-and so does the majority of this
country. I think most people are
educated on ACA and they see a big
        fraud perpetrated on this country
by you tree hugging liberal democrats.

      • rulegal

Hey Garry, Obama is recommending a 1 year fix this morning, so old policies would be mandatory extensions within ACA. Keep up with the changing tide. Clinton must have gotten to him.

  • Wes Stephens

“I would prefer an administrative fix because it could be done much more quickly without any accompanying agendas,” Pelosi said.

Yeah, who wants to involve Congress to pass laws?

    • truth > spin

Given the track record, do you want them involved?

    • Layla

Who knew Pelosi was such a Marxist? I worked on the Hill 20 years and I never saw it.

      • garry lafferty

Be wealthy don’t make you a Marxist idiot.

        • Charles

Look whose calling the kettle black.
If you support this idiot you are the
          biggest idiot of all.

        • Coady

Must be a product of a good liberal education. I haven’t found one of your comments that is written in English. Of course even if they were they still wouldn’t make sense.

        • BishopLenBrennan

          “Be wealthy don’t make you a Marxist.”……………….Ebonics??

    • garry lafferty

Wes its already law it was grandfather did you not pay attention. Congress can go back to voting against the American people.

  • Sabrina

I remember what she said the first time we have to pass it so (WE) can know what is in it and could care less what she or any Dem says now they all voted for it not reading it and we are going to believe all is going to be well now! Wont happen

  • 9corona

I think I would rather a vote on a partisan solution, not the my way or the highway administrative fix.

  • OldmanRick

One would think the jackasses would push for some sort of reprieve until after the midterms. That way they would have time to fully BS their low information voting crowd and useful idiots that they – the very dingbats responsible for this debacle in the first place – were looking out for their base and even convince them to vote all them back into office.

    • garry lafferty

Don’t vote tea baggers back in there the ones that don’t want people to have insurance in ACA.

      • roy elliott

This point of view is stupid. In California, 30,000 middle class families lost their Kaiser Permanente policies and now are faced with doubled premiums with WORSE coverage!!

  • Layla

To Nancy Pelosi: Haven’t you done enough harm to the people of this nation?

    • garry lafferty

Nancy should be speaker not a hateful John Boehner. We cant move forward tells he stands up against his teaparty.

      • roy elliott

Dear garry…You must be one of the “TAKERS”…voters who depend on OUR government ..AND they don’t pay any taxes!!!!!

      • rulegal

The majority party chooses the speaker, and Pelosi is in the minority now. We’ve had enough of this bag already in the past, hopefully she fades away in the next election cycle. Come on Calif, you can do it…vote someone else in next election.

      • Bradley Stone

        what are you completly insane

      • JCJ Bike

Yeah… and these message boards should only allow smart people, but here you are.

      • Dark Ages

Agree with the tea party comment, They need to go, however ‘lets pass the law and then see what is in it… ‘ coming from a house speaker is not responsible. She should not be the leader of the house in 2015. The party has a lot of great leaders that would do a much better job

        • Layla

Just so we’re clear on this…the tea party ARE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE who are fed up with politics as usual, with the thieves in government. They threw you out in 2010. Expect the same in 2014.

      • Arthur Weideman

It’s idiots like you that got us into this position with Obama

      • Pupito4u

Obammy used to have sex with old white self loathing chumps like you!

    • townfarmer

Why oh why do we have such dreadful people in those positions running this country…. or should I say ruining this country….

    • Dark Ages

I am afraid she will once again be Speaker of the House in 2015 after the Demoncrat wipe out of 2014

      • Arthur Weideman

        Dream on

  • Layla

Personally, I think Obama, Pelosi and all other Dems need to be “perp walked” out of the Capitol in handcuffs for the massive fraud you have committed on the American people. If you were in the private sector, you would be.

    • garry lafferty

You lost election thats not fraud it will be fine before next election don’t worry you will lose again. Your side shut down government don’t for get and Bush was your God.

      • rulegal

Sorry Garry, Harry Reid and POS Obama shut down the government by not compromising, or even holding any meetings. If you are looking for a scapegoat, the goat is named Barry. Baaa Baaa.

        • JCJ Bike

Garry isn’t smart… and boy, don’t the democrats now wish they had worked something out with the republicans that would avoid the mess we are in now?

Harry Reid didn’t want to negotiate and he had the leverage. Now, the GOP should adopt that same approach and let this health care bill wrap around their necks thru the next election.

It’s a funny thing about negotiations… power (leverage) tends to bounce back and forth. Had President Obama had even an ounce of forethought, he would have kept his original campaign promise to be the president of all people and run things like a purple state. Instead, he told the GOP in 2009, “I won…” and now those chickens are coming home to roost.

And the backlash is NOTHING compared to what happens when all the Americans on employer plans find out they are losing coverage and their new plans are going to be 50+ percent more. Republicans are already mad.. most independents will jump ship.. and moderate dems will jump because they wanted health care reform but not if it meant huge increases.

Sit back.. grab some popcorn.. and watch the dems fall. All that will be left are the liberals from dark blue districts (SF, NYC, Boston, parts of LA).

      • Lostcustomer

Garry; You have shown to be a complete progressive/Communist idiot that doesn’t do anything except listen to MSNBC and the DNC. You must get your support from the government, which is not suppose to take care of you, except in an emergency and for defense. It’s up to you to get an education and get a good job and support yourself and your family. It’s not the governments responsibility to support anyone, except those that were injured protecting this country or it’s citizens. This republic was founded on the basis of individual freedom, not socialism, and we had a war to make sure the citizens were not controlled like the countries in Europe.
This President and his minions will go down as the worst President and congress in history. It’s time to completely repeal Obamacare and start over. It’s time for the taxpaying citizens to speak out and say “no more”.; No more taxes, no more regulations, no more liberal laws, no more federal government control, smaller government and no more insane stupid laws that accomplish nothing.
And as far as the shutdown, it was Obama and the Senate Democrats that caused the shutdown, not the Republicans. The truth shall prevail, not the spin/lies the WH and his minions put out… The people know the truth and they are not as stupid as you evidently are…

ps; I just happen to be a registered Democrat that thinks for himself and thinks this President, Clinton, Holder, Palosi, Reid, Waters, Feinstein, Boxer, Landrieu and the rest of the Communist party should be impeached for not living up to their oath of office, lying to the public, fraud, the IRS scandals, NSA scandal, Benghazi and the death of 4 Americans, Fast & Furious, and they should all be arrested and tried for treason.

  • JCJ Bike

She has to now realize that her chances of ever becoming Speaker of the House will end with the next election. If the GOP is smart (no guarantee of that), they let the dems hang out to dry by not letting them legislate minor tweaks to obamacare. Big changes.. or no changes.. and Obama will die on his sword for his last two years in office vs. sitting with republicans to come up with a big compromise.

If this mess gets worse as costs for people who get insurance from their employers go way up, the House will certainly stay GOP in the next election and possible pick up seats for the republicans. Not the direction dems like Steny Hoyer want to go.

At that point, there will be dems in the House who say… “Pelosi will never be at risk of losing her House seat but many of the rest of us can’t say the same thing and we can’t let an uber-liberal lead us further into the minority.”

And then the challenges will surface.

    • garry lafferty

The president will not die on his sword go to hail with saint Regan.

      • roy elliott

Please read the comment from “Disgusted”

      • JCJ Bike

If you can’t comprehend what the phrase “die on his sword” means relative to a political discussion, then perhaps you shouldn’t be in here posting.

So you don’t walk away completely confused… it means he would rather face all kinds of political instability and backlash from a majority of Americans vs. admitting this law is causing more problems than it should and sitting down and working with Republicans to craft a balanced, smart health care law.

You will learn more about that when you take 11th grade government next fall.

      • Layla

Are you a product of government ed, Garry?

  • Leslie Napolitano

Aw, shut up, you wrinkled old has-been!

    • jimhuff

      Screw you, you handout expecter.

  • Richard Tebaldi

If I don’t like it can I shove it up your bottom?

    • garry lafferty

It don’t effect me my rate stayed the same this year . Last year was higher co payments. It was going threw the roof before ACA.

  • Disgusted

How can they “fix” my monthly premium that is currently $253.00 for my family of 4 to $995.00 in the summer of 2014. Same plan, same coverage. How is this the “Affordable Care Act”.

    • dennisc200

For $253 dollars a month, you current plan is a high deductible plan. I suggest that you shop around and find a better deal.

      • Disgusted

Yes, we have a high deductible. We are happy with our plan and it works for us. You are missing the point to my post @dennisc200:disqus . Obama said, “if you are happy with your current plan, you can keep it”. I can’t keep my plan, because it’s too expensive. Thanks for nothing Obama.

        • dennisc200

Hopefully, a resolution will be reached that allows you to keep your present plan.

          • Lostcustomer

It’s the Democrats plan that was forced down the throats of the American taxpaying citizen, so live with what you passed, except with No exemptions, no exceptions and no rebates…

          • dennisc200

My response was not addressed to you troll. By the way, I am a Federal Retiree, and I get wonderful health care insurance mostly paid for by you taxpayers. My premiums are going up next year by $3 a month. In life we make choices. I retired at 55 and have a great pension. I don’t get the crumbs that Social Security Recipients get, LOL.

          • Layla

            You’re a typical progressive.

          • Layla

Tell that to those being treated NOW for cancer, Dennis. Pray that cancer never touches your family.

    • garry lafferty

Wow you must have had a worthless policy for family. Im single 60 and $253 was what I would pay single. Good policy but that was one old guy in late 50s. Look into ACA sounds like your getting scammed for your family.

      • Disgusted

Nope, on the contrary Garry. We have 100% annual yearly doctor visits. Our policy is great and we have zero complaints with our policy. Again, we are very happy with it and it works for us. The point to my post is, that now we cannot keep our policy, because it’s too expensive.

        • Layla

          So is Congress.

      • Lostcustomer

Sounds like you have the poor coverage, Garry. I have great coverage from my employer, similar to Medicare, with a $300 yr deductible, $3000 yr cap/co-pay before they pay 100%, for both me and my wife at a cost of $197 mo. Nothing in the ACA can compare at that price; not even close…

      • gerardharbison

        Baghdad Bob, is that you?

    • ChicoEscuela

Make that call to your Senator and Congressmen or Congresswoman – tell them – raise hell with them – make it uncomfortable for the dolts that work for them………….They don’t like those types of calls!!
Let them know that you’ll be voting for anyone but them – next time around

      • Layla

And then, SHOW UP AND VOTE!

        • ChicoEscuela

HUH? show up and vote for the cretins?

    • Layla

Now you know why Congress exempted themselves.

  • ChicoEscuela

Does anyone care what this person way past their time has to say? No – didn’t think so.
Nancy, go home – relax on the spread that was purchased from ‘insider trading monies’ – that are illegal for everyone but the political class

    • garry lafferty

Some of you people need Jesus like Nancy has.

      • Lostcustomer

Nancy only worships money and power; nothing else. And she could care less about the people, as long as they vote for her…

      • BishopLenBrennan

Is English your fourth or fifth language?

  • Pam from Michigan

“If you like it you can keep it,” until after the midterm elections next November and then you’re screwed again. Yep, that’s one heck of a fix. It would have been much better if you’d left OUR healthcare alone and “fixed” it for those who didn’t have any.

  • jimhuff

Ignorant B****H, if the people of CA vote for her, they are insane.

  • James Grey

The Senators should have called Insurance Companies in to try and make a Policy for the Poor people and leave all the others alone. Why another Federal Bill that will have Millions lost to FRAUD like all the others they have like Social Security, Medicare, Food Stamps, IRS, FEMA, even our Military has Fraud. Why give them one more to steal from? If Walmart operated like the Government they would close down in a year. The Government is to big with very POOR follow up and maybe incompetent people doing the job. How can the IRS send a $2 million dollar refund to a lady who earns $20,000 a year? WHY? HOW?

    • Layla

We’re going to take care of that in 2014, 2016 and again in 2018.

  • Kaywhever

Nancy, you own this piece of junk program. You wanted Congress to vote on it before they read it. You are dangerous. Registration is just a very small part of Obamacare and you blew it. Get a new life please !

Pinocchio, Snow White & Superman stroll into town. Walking along
    they see 3 signs:

“Most beautiful woman in the world Beauty

    “Strongest man
in the world Contest” “I’m entering,” says Superman.

    “Greatest liar

    Pinocchio returns

    “Who the hell is
    Nancy Pelosi?”

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said :

“We have to pass it, to find out what’s in it”

A physician called into a radio show and said :

“That’s the definition of a stool sample”.

Well, that pretty well sums it up folks!

of the Day – Sue Klinkhamer Edition

“I spent two years defending Obamacare. I had constituents
scream at me, spit at me and call me names that I can’t put in print. The
congressman was not re-elected in 2010 mainly because of the anti-Obamacare
anger. When the congressman was not re-elected, I also (along with the rest of
our staff) lost my job. I was upset that because of the health care issue, I
didn’t have a job anymore but still defended Obamacare because it would make
health care available to everyone at, what I assumed, would be an affordable
price. I have now learned that I was wrong. Very wrong.”

  • Coady

What a surprise. Her head is so far up Obama’s backside that if he makes a sharp turn it will snap her neck like a twig.

  • dlmstl

This is nothing more than ‘can kicking’ in a lame attempt to get past the ’14 elections. Who’s going to pay for the retro-fitting costs incurred by the insurance industry. Is Willie just going to wave his majic wand? FUBAR!

Nancy Pelosi.???. One totally brain dead Democrat and a a sorry excuse for an Italian American.

    • DX9CFqlxJ1

      Dangerous too.

    • Layla

She’s not an Italian American. She’s a Marxist.

  • bk

Google and watch her endorse Agenda 21 in 1992. It is on you tube. Also a member of CFR.

  • DX9CFqlxJ1

The only administrative fix is for the resignation of this POTUS effective immediately.

  • BillMac94

You would think at least one reporter at Pelosi’s weekly news conference would ask her one simple question: Why did you pass a bill which would result in millions and millions of Americans losing their health care coverage especially when prior to its passage President Obama was promising all Americans they would be able to keep their current health care plan?

    • Layla

Well, since NOBODY already insured was going to sign up, they had to come up with a way to force people into it. If this fraud was committed in private industry, it would result in likely prison time.

I am left wondering why that is not the case here.

  • Hawkeye72

Pelosi said “we have to pass it to see what’s in it.”–That’s also the definition of a stool sample.

  • WrinkledThought

Yeah, let’s all stand around and pass it first before we read it so we can find out what’s in it. Peelousy, you are nothing but a piece of simian fecal matter!

Piglosi is a Bagatha. That is a cross between an old bag and an old hag.

  • Originalst

Perhaps if Pelosi and democrats had actually read the bill before they voted en masse for it, they might have had the common sense to realize you can insure millions of previously uninsured without the cost of medical going up and with it premiums! And they and Pelosi are now going to vote for a fix to law they never read and wont read the fix either.
All Democrats will support it because it is the role of the Dems to give their supporters a free ride in life. Free foodstamps, free or subsidized medical, free unemployment, free welfare and their means of doing this is to tax those that actually work and invest and save for that rainy day. The latter is something the Dems have never learned!

  • Roonnivw

As the person stated Pelosi haven’t you done enough? Are you not the Einstein that said {First we have to pass the law and then we will know what its about}. You have to be dumber than a box of rocks. I cannot believe that the people of your district cannot find some one more competent to run for your office, you are proof that money talks and that botox is dangerous to a persons mental being.

I continue to wonder if certain people in DC are reading an abridged version of the Constitution. Instead of We the People, it says Dudes in Charge. Instead of Congress passes the law and the President can sign or veto the law, it says they guy in the white house can make alterations to laws that suit his needs. Politics aside, what you are seeing unfold before you is the degradation of the US Constitution and the country upon which it was based upon. The founding fathers did not care for big government, did not care to be told what they could and couldn’t do, and wanted every citizen (granted, at that time, it was white male landowners…but we got better) to be able to make choices for themselves in order to seek the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is sad to see these millionaires arguing about things that will never affect them personally. No person in congress will ever worry about the cost of their insurance…they make millions through “serving the people” or should I say “their self-serving ways”.
The Federal government DEMANDS I pay something like 28% (and may state wants its pound of flesh as well)…and they do so little with it…save line their own pockets and waste my money giving it to my countries enemies or to illegal aliens for free healthcare and schooling, while citizens go without help. I think Obamacare should have been a fix to Medicare / Medicaid and open it up to those who need help with insurance. I’d be glad to know some of my taxes were for that purpose. But to tell everyone what they must have for insurance is NOT the place of government…not unless you are prepared to move to a socialist government…and we see how well that worked in Russia. FYI – God only asks me to donate 10% and it seems that money is well spent.

Anything Pelosi backs should be avoided like the plague and also no deals with the Democrats they are trying to trap the Republicans with a make nice attitude don’t buy it repeal Obama care for the good of this nation it will never work it is against all that this country stands for. For those of you that desire a Marxist society move to Cuba or Russia you won’t be missed.
