Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that “race” is one reason Republicans are avoiding an immigration overhaul.

During her weekly press conference, the California Democrat implied there were ulterior reasons Republicans weren’t addressing immigration.

“I think race has something to do with them not bringing up the immigration bill,” Pelosi said. “I’ve heard them say to the Irish, ‘If it was just you, it would be easy.’”

Pelosi was answering a question about a testy exchange Tuesday between Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, and Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. Holder implied Wednesday that he was treated disrespectfully because of his race.

In responding to Holder’s comments, Pelosi offered her off-the-cuff thoughts on the role of race in an immigration overhaul.

Pelosi said she didn’t know how much race played into Republican criticism of Obama administration officials. But she said the contempt for women was “self-evident.”

House Republicans have maintained that they will not take up an immigration overhaul because they do not trust the president to implement it as intended. “The Speaker has been clear that we need to fix our broken immigration system, but, at this point, the American people simply don’t trust the President to enforce the law as written,” Michael Steel, a spokesman for Speaker John A. Boehner, told CQ Roll Call.

During his weekly press conference just minutes later, Boehner fielded the same question about Holder implying that race was part of the reason he had been treated in such an adversarial manner by House Republicans.

“There’s no issue of race here,” Boehner said.

The Ohio Republican then went on a spirited rant about roadblocks the administration had put up to getting information on controversies such as the attack on a U.S. facility in Benghazi, Libya, Operation Fast and Furious and the IRS political targeting scandal.

In response to Pelosi’s comments, a GOP leadership aide had stern words for the Minority Leader.

“Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are in a race to see who can be the most vapid and vile, and Pelosi pulled ahead today,” the aide said.

Nancy “we got nothing Harry”. Harry, “you always have the race card”

  • rkthespos

So that’s going to be the Dem strategy going into midterms – everything is about race. Good luck with that

  • Steve Braden

Wow, what a perfect candidate for the gallows

  • Wareagle82

well, of course; what else could it be. We know that no other president was ever criticized about anything or had any idea of his opposed. Not. A. Single. One.

  • Elizabeth_Erwin

I was so impressed with Nancy Pelosi when she first came to national recognition. Now I am just amazed at her cluelessness.

  • SouthofCincy

    Last sentence sums it up.

  • f_this_state

when you come out and just label an entire group of americans as racist, it really does diminish the impact of real racism. It’s like crying wolf. It hurts those that are actually impacted by it. By lumping millions of americans together and saying they’re all this or they’re all that is pretty bigoted in and of itself.

So not only is she a bigot, but she hurts those impacted by racism.

  • semby

Nancy Pelosi is a disease and the cure is; we need to vote Republican all around this country and send her home into retirement.
    She’s a national disgrace.
BTW; who are the mindless journalists that ask these stupid questions; it’s like she has journalists that pander to her.

    • BongBong

I’d at least like a strong Independent push for more Libertarian candidates. It’s clear the “two-party” mentality has left America teetering on a precipice.

  • miked22

Source the Irish comment, Mrs. Pelosi, or it’ll be just like the claims of Mitt Romney not paying taxes, saying “I can’t stand to even look at you” to Obama and racial and homophobic epithets from the Tea Party during the Obamacare vote.

  • MMann0770

There is never a follow-up question to Harry and Nancy’s (and Obama’s) asinine comments about what they have heard others supposedly say. Just once I would like to see a real journalist them to either name names or stfu.

  • BongBong

Nancy Pelosi is a depraved individual. The nation would be well served with the immediate implementation of term limits for Congress and the Senate.

  • goodbyecountry

Does this demented dingbat realize many Democrats are also opposed to immigration “reform”/amnesty? I am so sick of being called racist. Screwyou Nancy.

  • Dan Wafford

Blah blah racism blah blah global warming blah blah racism blah blah global warming . . .

  • Foodie for thought

I think I remember her from that HBO series ‘Tales from the Crypt’

  • carybrus

Gohmert is a racist, says Holder. Republicans are racists, says Pelosi. You are racist. I am racist. So says Obama, Holder, Pelosi, Reid and – wait for it – Sharpton. (That is so funny to put him in the same sentence with those others, isn’t it?)
To a hammer everything looks like a nail. Right, Eric? Right, Nancy? (That’s racist.)
My Norwegian ancestors were SO racist. They are laughing their lutefisk off!

  • Rob

Oh, please let this dingbat keep this tour going through the election. Yes, it’s all racism. It has nothing to do, you dingbat, that America already has the world’s most generous LEGAL immigration system every year. It has nothing to do with the 80 million Americans who have given up looking for work because the job market is so bad. It has nothing to do with the fact that 1/3 of all federal inmates are illegal criminals. It has nothing to do that NO PRESIDENT since Eisenhower has put real effort into removing the 11 to 15 million foreigners residing in our country against the LAW! It’s not about how the last giant amnesty in 1986 was rife with fraud and abuse. It’s just racism. Keep speaking you clueless dingbat, PLEEEEEEASE.

  • SWJ

I don’t have a problem with peoples’ race, but I have a serious problem with idiots. For that reason, Nancy Peabrain needs to sit at the back of the bus.
I’m thankful whenever she opens her mouth. The GOP’s best days are when Nancy gets to “thinking” and then tells everyone what she has come up with.
And the really funny part is there are probably 100 or more dem house members who are even dumber than her!!! Anyone listen to Wasserman-Schultz recently? S-T-U-P-I-D.

  • panola60

Pelosi said twice that undocumented immigrants are only good
    for housekeeping, farming and landscaping.

  • aaaa aa

What part of the word “illegal” don’t these people understand. They are breaking the law ,plain and simple. If their own country is so bad and they want to come here then take the issue up with their own government. They are acting like they are entitled, like they want political asylum.
They all seem to have no issues sending back billions of dollars back to their country on an annual basis.Which is lost revenue for business in the USA
I have friends who came over from Ireland a few years back. They were just made LEGAL citizens last week. They went through the whole process LEGALLY.
Why do these people feel they should not follow the legal process.
IF THEY DONT LIKE IT,THEY SHOULD GO BACK TO WHERE THEY CAME FROM

  • sashley

For Ms Pelosi, What is the meaning of our citizenship when the rewards awarded to illegal aliens by the U.S. Congress and “The One” trumps the penalty for their illegal presence and gives them financial advantages over citizens and those who came here the right way? Pelosi and the Democrats would never think of enforcing laws that they swore to up hold..
