Unemployment Extension Hearing Scrapped Thanks to Meeting Room Spat

pelosi 003 050114 445x290 Unemployment Extension Hearing Scrapped Thanks to Meeting Room Spat

(Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call)

Updated, 1:25 p.m. | A planned Democratic hearing on an unemployment benefits extension was quickly transformed into a news conference Tuesday, with Democrats blaming Republicans for the stalled legislation and a spat erupting over meeting space.

Democrats changed their plans to hold a Democratic Steering and Policy hearing on the unemployment insurance issue Tuesday after Republicans balked, saying that Democrats were using the committee room improperly. Democrats accused Republicans of “kicking House Democrats out of a room” and attempting to “silence the voices of Americans” who are without unemployment benefits.

But according to documents obtained by CQ Roll Call, Education and the Workforce Committee ranking Democrat George Miller of California requested the committee room for the hearing, but called it a “members meeting” and suggested press would not be in attendance.

The documents to use the committee room showed that under subject matter, Democratic aides wrote: “Mr. Miller would like to hold a Members meeting.” The box asking if media would be present for the meeting was checked “no.”

When Republicans learned that Democrats had issued releases saying they were holding a hearing in the room, with press and cameras welcome, they balked. Still, committee spokeswoman Alexandra Sollberger told CQ Roll Call that “at no time” did the Republicans “deny their request to hold an event.”

She added, “In fact, we have communicated to Democrat staff that we are more than willing to accommodate the event they now wish to hold – all they have to do is ask.” She said the Republican staff director was willing to let it slide following a phone call with the Democratic counterpart Tuesday morning.

Julia Krahe, a spokeswoman for committee Democrats, confirmed Republicans made that offer, but, “By the time we got that information, it was too late to move the hearing back to the committee room.”

A spokesman for Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, Drew Hammill — who said Democrats amended their request — offered a similar remark.

“They changed course so late in the day that it was logistically impossible to move the event back to the Rayburn office building,” Hammill said. “I think silencing seven people who came to testify about the plight of the unemployed is shameful.”

Sollberger called the spat “petty” and “partisan political shenanigans at its best” and a spokesman for Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio dubbed the situation “faux outrage.”

Democrats decided it was best to hold a press conference anyway, given that the hearing was designed, of course, to pressure the Republicans in an election year.

Pelosi’s office told reporters in an email that the scheduled forum would instead take place on the front steps of the Capitol. Pelosi will join Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland and a handful of Democrats at 2:30 p.m.

A Pelosi release complained: “Please be advised that due to House Republicans kicking House Democrats out of a room that was scheduled for today’s Steering and Policy hearing on the GOP’s failure to extend UI, we’re now holding a press conference in lieu of the hearing that will take place on the House East Front Steps.”

Editor’s note: This post was updated and headline was changed from “Unemployment Extension Hearing Scrapped, Democrats Cry Foul,” to the current headline after CQ Roll Call examined documents shedding more light on the hearing room situation.

The USA GOVERNMENT is sinking this country into the ground. Sending aid to Ukraine when your own people are starving in the USA.

The USA stands up for countries being bullied and sending aid… Oh WAIT, they don’t! Ukraine is a private interest to the USA for who knows what!?. If they really cared about standing up to bullies, they would be in Africa standing up to BOKO HARAM who is kidnapping and raping school children. HARAM makes PUTIN look like Mother Theresa, and here we are sending our tax dollars to help other countries and not our own.

    • Roger R

      Those girls are black

      • Ladonya Cherrie Greene

So and your point is? Whether they’re black or white or whatever they shouldn’t be kidnapped. How would you like if some strange group of people came and took your behind away somewhere and do God knows what to you and leave your family just standing there worried and without a clue or without a trace. Those girls are black. And?

        • Roger R

Thats why people not in a hurry to rescue them ,I didn’t mean no harm by it , when it was Ukraine the USA jump up quickly and not so fast for those 250+ school girls,I have a daughter and I don’t won’t anything to happen to her ,I’m sorry if I came off the wrong way.

      • kasia54

Excuse me? So those girls are black? So what, that makes them less human????? WTF is wrong with people today?

I voted Republican since voting age until my fifth decade. No more. They are a big fat useless bunch of drunken crooks. The Dems aren’t any better but I didn’t vote them in.”

            Uh, what?

        • Carl Yoder

Kasia54, I think Roger is saying that b/c they’re black they’re being ignored and undervalued as human beings. Hence, no intervention for them. The larger issue, aside from tongue-in-check commentary is that geopolitics trump real justice.

          • kasia54

Ahh, yes Carl – you’re right. I misinterpreted. Whoops.

          • Roger R

I’m not trying to ruffle any feathers ,but we need help here ,and it sad what has happened to the school girl I’m just saying that us is quick to help the rich and not the ones that really need it ,I’m black myself ,I’m saying people of color don’t get treated the same, who did they help fist Africa’s school girls or Ukraine, so all of us that are unemployed my good bless us with the strength to get over this hump in our life.

Guys, I can’t be sure, but it sounds like @disqus_AWYPkQEl9s:disqus is saying that the US government doesn’t help those girls because they’re black. I’m not getting the reading that he’s saying they don’t deserve help because they’re black.

        • jerry

It doesn’t matter other countries keep up such rutkus because they know the US will try to save the day and drop billions of dollars just to calm them down. I’m starting to see this is the new trend. We have people hurting here at home we should come first. Let other countries figure it out like we been have too.

        • karen

I hope he’s saying dont help because we have too may issues to address here. We can’t save the world and let our people down

        • Roger R

No thats not what I’m saying, I’m afro american, I’m saying people of color get treated way different then others ,it don’t matter we need this lifeline of restoring unemployment insurance extension

          • Matt Roney

Yeah, exactly. It sounded like people thought you were saying that YOU thought they shouldn’t get help because they’re black. It seemed much more likely that you meant they won’t get help due to ridiculous inequality in the system. With which I agree with you 100%.

No those girls are not Republicans.

I feel the same way America is a prideful country. The want to show everyone ese that they have so much power but yet they arent taking care of their own. We are tax payers and this aid to other countries need to stop. They all need to be fired or laid off.

Not only that, we have a Draft Dodger as Speaker of the House. In 1968 JOHN BOEHNER enlisted in the Navy (1968). It was during the Vietnam War years. 8 weeks after he enlisted JOHN BOEHNER was honorably discharged for a BAD BACK.

BOEHNER was “gaming the system” in 1968 and he’s still doing it now. Our country is sunk!

  • Roger R

Can any body tell me what this meeting going to solve, why this isn’t in the news more ,3.million with out money food phone got kids an address losing everything we worked hard for years, this isn’t a game this is real life

    • charles

The news media do not report this because they are controlled, and can only report what that one percent authorize. They too, like the U.S. Government has to do what the one percent tells them to do. Wake up America, it is not for the people or by the people.

    • kasia54

Um, they don’t care and there’s no freakin’ meeting and even if there is a meeting it’s all posturing. Nothing will get accomplished because neither side wants anything to get accomplished. Both Repubs and Dems are sell outs, cowards, liars and need to put out of our misery.

      • smutek

Exactly. I’m a life long member of the Democratic party, was laid off in August, and lost my benefits early this year.

I’m just as sick of hearing about the Republicans as I am hearing about the poor, cowed, ineffectual Democrats who can do nothing more than cry ‘mean old Republican won’t let me…’

If we want change, we can start by not voting Republican or Democrat. Left, right, conservative or liberal – it doesn’t matter. Stop supporting this masquerade, posing as a democracy.

        • cynthia

          YOU ARE RIGHT MY FRIEND

because big media is owned by the same people that own the republicans.

And Boehner’s being an azz and Pelosi’s trying to change the rules so she can the media in to make herself look good…Neither side cares about those struggling right now !!!

      • karen

They don’t care but baby god cares and when he deal with them have mercy on their souls

      • Ray

They don’t care. They enjoy watching the all these Democratic supporters pan Boehner while both parties laugh it up! Ever see rat race?

  • KDuluth

This group should have been heard in front of a standing committee, but since the Republicans control all the committees, they had to hold it in a meeting room instead. Press releases – yes with an expectation of press – went out to the world YESTERDAY. Today when they get to the room they can’t use it because of a procedural problem?
This is rubbing salt in open wounds.
This is willful disregard for the citizens of this country who are suffering.
    This is madness.

    • kasia54

Oh please. They never intended to get anything done for the unemployed. Congress, both chambers, are interested in only serving themselves and not the people who put them in office.

    • rulegal

Too bad if the Democrats tried to sneak a meeting with the press after they said they were not invited. They got caught at their slimy cheating game and the plug was pulled on the meeting site, as it should have been. Dems are sore losers for something they created themselves. Cheaters never prosper is what I was taught at a young age.

  • John Pomponio

hear me out on this one…unemployment is basicly a system built like a insurance company(unemployment insurance)…you pay into this system out of every check, every week but the flaw is there is no contract saying how long your benifits will last even tho you pay nto it. it can basicly be cut at any given time the budget lapses and not paid for by the federal goverment.I think the people need a better structured system were our unemployment isurance is a written contract on how many months we have before we start paying into it and we should also should know how much money is being put into this fund throughout our life time and some sort of refund for not using it because alot of people dont even use unemployment and still pay into it

    • KDuluth

Actually your employer pays into unemployment, not you. But it still needs to have a system tied to the unemployment rate/economy so people will know when it is available and when it isn’t. This time people had it – and then it was taken away. There is no way to plan for that. We do need a better structured system.

      • John Pomponio

thats true i didnt realize that

  • Al Elbert

I’m relieved that this nonsense bill looking to pay the lazy not to work is pretty much out of the question. I’d like to thank Mr. Boehner for fighting against the bill to prevent my hard-earned tax dollars from being wasted on more than two million lazy bums. I’m so proud to be a Conservative Republican.

    • jack

you know your also speaking of 200,000 veterans out of work! Good job calling our troops lazy bums!

      • Al Elbert

They ARE all lazy bums. These two million or so people used to have jobs and now they’re saying they can’t look for another one? Come on! Six months of handouts are more than enough. If they can’t secure a job within those six months, then the job market isn’t the problem, they are!

        • richcreamerybutter

Assuming you are sincere and not trolling, what magic circumstance do you believe is responsible for the sudden dearth of work ethic? Do you think they all happen to lie about their terrible circumstances, or all suddenly became spectacular failures at the same time?

          • Al Elbert

What is “trolling”? Sorry I’m not computer savvy unlike you people.

          • richcreamerybutter

Trolling is the term used for the attempt to get a rise out of people, usually in a comment forum.

To predict your first argument pertaining to my question, in the worst case scenario (when the unemployed are told “McDonalds is always hiring”), they are competing with everyone else for even low wage jobs. Managers of such establishments don’t want to hire professionals, because they cite high turnover once the economy recovers.

          • Al Elbert

I’m not trying to get a rise out of people. I’m only saying the GOP did the right thing and prevented this wasteful and irresponsible bill from becoming law.

          • richcreamerybutter

Again, how do you feel about your tax dollars used for corporate outsourcing? Every dollar that is used to move a job to another country is one with no ROI for US taxpayers. On the other hand, at least with EUC most of the money will be immediately circulated back into the American economy.

          • Al Elbert

The liberal claim of jobs being shipped to other countries is nothing more than an exaggerated speculation. So much so that it has become the typical excuse for not looking hard enough for work. How much longer are people going to pull that excuse out?

          • richcreamerybutter

Not in my industry! When I work for global agencies, I often manage teams in other parts of the world. Those of us in the US also have to be available for remote meetings at unfortunate times of the day, since the US-based branches of global companies must defer to branches located in countries that legislate humane working conditions. This means that so-and-so in India can’t work past 5pm, so I might have to jump on a call late at night.

My livelihood is project-based, and every company (global or local) I’ve been over the past 6 years has used outsourced labor. As a manager, I know that it doesn’t even save money in every instance, and even if it does it’s not that much.

          • richcreamerybutter

Anyway, do you think corporations that receive tax breaks should keep jobs in the US?

          • Al Elbert

Corporations can expand and/or adapt to wherever they feel they can. As long as they abide by the nation’s laws on business management.

          • richcreamerybutter

How does that benefit the citizens of the United States? You’re essentially asking them to invest in a corporation that wants to send money elsewhere. The US taxpayer sees no return on this investment. Only the shareholders of that corporation benefit.

They use public funding for investment (and bailouts), and then privatize the profits. I’m a progressive, and believe that small business should have a fighting chance. I’m just against what is basically the act of giving money to a large corporation if the American public receives nothing in return.

I think you agree with me, but I realize it’s probably difficult to reconcile this with the part that adheres to free market philosophy.

          • richcreamerybutter

All foreign expansion and investment should happen on their own dime, or via the outsourced countries’ tax incentives.

          • KDuluth

Ha Ha Ha! This is the funniest thing I have read all day. Al you are a card!
Seriously though – get outside in the sunshine. Being in the basement with black plastic over your windows is not getting you any vitamin D.

          • luis araud

You are just the biggest jackass I hope you go thru what these millions of people are going thru and you come across a self centered c*$ ksucker like yourself you have no right to judge these people calling people lazy you are out of your mind

          • Scott

            You must be working…

          • Al Elbert

Yes. Fifty hours on average as a networking specialist and server technician. I’m on of those people who are actually productive and does not rely on government handouts, like these two million whiny lazy unemployed bums.

          • Al Elbert

They should not blame their employers for relieving them of employment. They should thank them for the opportunity instead and move on, not sit around collecting handouts and waving their victim cards around.

          • richcreamerybutter

Are you under the impression they’re not moving on? If such a large group of people is having identical problems, perhaps they aren’t “waving victim cards” and are having genuine struggles obtaining employment.

          • Frank

Age discrimination is very real and prevalent now. I worked for a company for nine years. This company spent two years picking off the older workers with the help and advise of their attorney.
I apply for jobs now and some of the companies I apply to use a service to weed out their applicants. They ask your age and some of them want to invade your privacy by gaining access to your Facebook and Google activity. And the service that they use want the right to share and sell the information you provide. I have canceled applying to several companies because of the application process.

        • jack

You think they should look for any job? some are skilled workers! As for the market being strong, why are so many out of work. I live in a town that just announced Metlife is closing shop! theres another 200 jobs gone! Also, there is a member in this blog, his name is “marineoutofwork”! Explain your american concerns to him!

          • erick

When I apply and interview for available job openings I am told that I can not be hired because I am over qualified.

        • Hazab

its not about the hand out Al, its about the time it affords those
looking to be able to fulfill what they want to do, not just pick up
some job they HAVE to do. Its called the American dream, remember…? I am one of these Lazy bums, and I take great pleasure in generalizing you, such as you have me, as a ignorant p.o.s. :)

          • Al Elbert

Your bitterness against the greatest government in the world is so obvious. I’m sorry you feel this way.

          • richcreamerybutter

I’m not sure how old you are, but the environment for both younger and older workers is much more hostile than 20 (or even 15) years ago. There’s no shortage of hustle…but when someone must work 60 hours at a job because minimum wage hasn’t kept up with the cost of living, when does that leave time for an education to better oneself? Not to mention, the cost of an education and the current corrupt student loan industry?

          • richcreamerybutter

I’ve kept up with politics affecting older workers since the crash of 2008. I witnessed so many people in my parents’ generation who had worked in a manner of dedication consistent with the popular Puritan work ethic, and lost everything through no fault of their own. It was heartbreaking, because we all looked up to these people as representative of parental figures who had done their time, and now were reduced to fighting for Wal-Mart greeter positions.

I don’t see this as a badge of honor, but an outrage.

        • Bryan

I think your forgetting that this is not WELFARE. These are benefits that people paid into by WORKING and lost their jobs through NO FAULT of their own. You are an ignorant and cold hearted person, that is obviously self-centered and only cares about your own situation. Move on.

        • UI Extension discussions

You are obviously cold hearted. You have no clue what these people are going through. How dare you judge.

      • richcreamerybutter

Al’s “hard-earned tax dollars” are much more useful funding corporate outsourcing via tax breaks. ;)

        • Al Elbert

That’s right because these corporations use that money to expand and provide more jobs.

          • richcreamerybutter

Except that they use your tax dollars to provide jobs in other countries, and these foreign workers enjoy different forms of socialized medicine, so that saves corporations even more.

I’m all for responsible tax breaks when they keeps the jobs within the US.

          • Samuel Hoadley

Or they use the money to invest and get richer, the middle class is the job creators via supply and demand. Simple economics

          • richcreamerybutter

Also keep in mind that a corporate job is not going to magically appear as the result of a tax break. You also need consumer demand.

However, I’d be delighted to give all corporations the 25% rate found in other countries…as long as we too can have the same worker protections, universal healthcare, and a modicum of mandatory vacation days in those same countries. That’s fair.

          • jack dee

You are as stupid as they come number one your tax dollars does nothing towards unemployment number 2 your an idiot if you believe outsourcing companies provide jobs you uneducated steaming pile of horse dung

          • erick

More jobs overseas where the corporations outsource the jobs to get cheap labor. To be competitive in the world economy the republicans want to put your small children to work in sweat shops like the corporation do overseas.

    • Mike

You cannot possible be an American, no American could be as heartless and non-compassionate as you. Did your parents or grandparents migrate here from Europe or some country which is under dictatorship rule? I pray that the Supreme Being forgive us all and increase our love towards one other. My prayers are for America and for those who are so insensitive towards fellow Americans.

    • erick

Why did the republicans and the U. S. chamber of commerce oppose the “Bring Jobs Home Act of 2012″–Senate Bill 1549? That bill would have encouraged corporation to relocate back to the USA and provided jobs for American citizens. Now the republicans want to give 115 billion in tax extenders to corporations that outsource jobs overseas with out consideration as how to pay for the revenue loss. But to extend unemployment benefits to millions of working class Americans the republicans insist that it be paid for by cutting other benefits. Cantor claims that Medicare is 50% unfunded. If you cut out the insurance companies by passing a single payer system, then Medicare would be fully funded.

  • richcreamerybutter

Perhaps both EUC and a minimum wage increase need to be rebranded as “employment procurement investment” or “cost of living adjustment” to be more palatable to the GOP. It seems to do the trick when they desire a raise.

  • Tim from PA

Can’t even decide where to hold the meeting? I’ve known since their first vacation in January that congress is more likely to fund a fat a§§ contest in the East room before they help these poor people.

  • Ahiliya

talk is cheap and we are seeing it from all angles, like bad kids on a play ground, cannot get along so therefore everyone else suffers for their impoliteness

  • Shizue Leigh Hicks

Well, isn’t this just crap-tastic? JOHN BOEHNER playing games again? This guy needs to be shown the door ASAP. His own state of Ohio thinks he’s a drunken buffoon, and yet we tolerate him as Speaker of the House — one man (Joe Biden) away from the Presidency of the United States should anything happen to President Obama. My God!

  • MarineOutOfWork

    Just plain stupid.

  • Steve

I hope he gets his f’n head BLOWN OFF!

    • erick

The NSA will find you and kill you.

  • kevin

THE GOP continues to bully democrats and the american people. Good for Pelosi to call them out and hold the hearing on the steps of the Capitol! The issue will get MORE attention now. Never in the history of the EUC program has there NOT been an extension. Boehner and his GOP counterparts need to ACT. Time is running out for 3 million americans, our family and our friends. Time will run out for the GOP at the polls in November and in 2016 if they do not retroactively extend these benefits! Do the right thing, GOP! #ExtendUI

    • Shizue Leigh Hicks

I hope Nancy Pelosi takes full advantage of all that she sees and hears in these blogs. Republicans jumping ship and veterans losing hope all because of JOHN BOEHNER!

Stick it to ‘em, Nancy! You will be saving lives!

      • rulegal

Nancy sucks. Embarrassed she is from California. She does not represent what California and America needs to do.

    • kasia54

They won’t do anything for the American people. But it’s not just the GOP. The Dems aren’t doing anything but playing games and posturing. Don’t believe it? Why would they pass a bill they knew wouldn’t fly with the House? If they wanted it done, it would be done already. Don’t believe either party’s lies!

  • Norman Tallman

First of all I must admit I am a Republican, which, at this point I am ashamed to admit. Why are the Republicans balking against this? It will be good for the economy and help the millions that needs help. Mr. Speaker, you have a job and it seems you job is not helping those in need. I am pleading with you to let the House vote on this bill and not having your “Opinions” sway but let the dice fall where they may. I must admit, and I know there are thousands of others who are going to do so, and that is vote Democratic on the next election. Why do we need people like that in office that seems to not care what the people say?

    • richcreamerybutter

You shouldn’t be ashamed, because the Republican party of today is completely different than the one of previous generations. You likely identified with a previous iteration. The current one is frighteningly sociopathic at a rate constant with its religious fanaticism.

      • erick

Reagan was a compassionate conservative. Boehner is a fascist conservative.

  • Guy Three

This story is just more Benghazi smoke and screens since reps have new evidence of the dem coverup! Wheres Obama? Why he’s playing golf of course haha. NEWSFLASH Obamacare didn’t need a house vote, and neither does unemployment extension, it’s called executive orders and yes it’s democrats fault.

  • joe

time to pick up the riffle

No gun control. Get a gun and shoot a republican, so they can be with Jesus.

With the lack of compassion these republicans have shown… they are not headed to see Jesus.

      • biggin

Jesus is the only one who will forgive them

    • Scott

Are you crazy? From what I understand of the law, I think the government can murder you for saying that.

      • erick

THE NSA WILL FIND YOU AND KILL YOU.

        • Scott

Then they’ll come after you and murder you for saying that. All completely legal. In fact I think they can murder everyone for what I just said.

      • kasia54

And living in America is what, a big picnic these days? The government has already murdered Americans – thousands through war and ignoring their own constituents who have committed suicide. They don’t care.

    • kasia54

Yes, please. I think you meant rifle, though, right? but don’t kill ‘em. Dying is too good for them. Just maim them.

      • rulegal

Maim or kill a Democrat, either works for me. Liberal ideology is not working.

  • Deejayatwork

I don’t want to sound overly simplistic; however, since Boehner’s refusal to allow the legislation passed by the Senate to even come up for a vote in the House, I would like to file a personal injury lawsuit against him, personally. His refusal to allow a vote prohibits my Representative from representing me and all of the other constituents. Boehner is using my status to try and “hurt” the current administration and the Democratic Party as a whole. His actions are negligent, to say the least, and are having a direct, negative effect on me, and millions of others. Doesn’t this amount to taxation without representation? I’m on hold right now with my rep’s office. I want to sue. I’m trying to find out how. Maybe if he has to suffer like we do, Boehner might change his tune.

    • kasia54

Boehner will never suffer like we do — he’s above it all — even if he lost his job today he’s got multi-millions stashed on an island somewhere sheltered from the taxes he burdens us with.

The only thing that will get this alcoholic moron’s attention is to do something to him that money cannot resolve.

      • http://batman-news.com Robert Block

Ya don’t buy any OHIO products and his voters will take care of him.

      • Carl Yoder

It reminds me of a line from the movie “Trading Places” — “You hurt rich people by turning them into poor people…” You’re correct, Boehner (like so many others) is insulated. Perhaps there is some way to send him to the poorhouse. No one is totally invincible.

      • Philip Kelly

make washing d.c. a dry town! he will willingly step down

      • rulegal

What will get Harry Reid’s attention. Nothing but a stroke or heart attack most likely. Or a long jail sentence.

    • biggin

can there be a class action lawsuit ?

      • Shadow63

That’s what I meant class action law suit is what the American People need.

    • jack dee

Never happen who do you think elects the judges in supreme court have you ever tried suing a city or state directly nothing comes from it the only way to get to Boehner is the day after he’s voted out of the Republican running and you visit Ohio I bet he will be hiding his head in the sand because I will say this you john Boehner have done more than I would personally allow any man to do to my family and I will gladly be the first in the jail cell for kicking your unemployed tail after your voted out you are trash and deserve to be kicked and stepped on as such

    • Shadow63

Finally someone made sense. Why don’t we make like a group law suit against him. People where are you? Time to unite!

    • rulegal

Boehner is doing the same thing Harry Reid has done many times, blocking a vote or discussion on the floor. The problem goes both ways. If Reid won’t negotiate why should the Republicans not do the same. Pelosi did the same thing. Obama does his stonewalling differently. Nothing will get done with the present Democrat leaders in power, they are universally hated by all but their think alike party members. Your representative can still represent you regardless of what Reid or Boehner does, but nothing will happen to satisfy the common voter until new politicians are elected.

  • jack dee

The GOP is no different than other terrorists who hold hostages for personal gain it is insane that these people are paid so much and do so much to blatantly damage what America used to be all those people who worked and died for this country is what made it great and now these money hungry leeches are sucking the American life force right out of the constitution they police our states, invade our privacy, show that the president does not run the country and now even tell us to our faces we are not as important as companies that are outsourcing American jobs and money to other countries by giving them a tax break that DOUBLES OUR DEFICIT they work 145 days out of 365 and call us lazy?

    • biggin

I agree they are taking a 10 day vacation next week which probably means that we will not see anything done this month. this whole thing is a heaping mound of bullcrap

    • Roxanne Agredano

Did I just read a reply to this that they are talking another two week recess? If this bill does not hit the floor for a vote before the end of the month the bill is dead. You all realize that the bill expires on May 31? SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE!!

      • rulegal

Yeah, jobs need to be created. Stop buying products from China, bring back industry and manufacturing to America. Problem solved. You cannot expect to be on unemployment or welfare forever…there are not enough working people left to pay for those not working. The Fed printing funny money is not the answer.

  • erick

Republicans only serve the 1% financial class in their class war against the 99% working class.

  • America first, not “allies”

There needs to be a revolution in politics driven by all who are being used as cogs for the machine. We as a country have been held back against the wall by professionally groomed liars that are placed in office by corporations set on keeping the pyramid shape of America’s economic system. Oh, but do they put on a face when the time comes for them to climb down to the trenches and appear to know what it feels like to walk barefoot. Americans are blind to the power they have to affect change, it is unbelievable. Non-vilent protest needs to be taught to every person using the public school system of this nation. Only then will the cogs break free from being the bearers of unbalanced weight. Policies are being aimed at the wrong direction, it is time for the people of this country to feel the work of their taxes being placed towards a benefit that places them at the front. Leader are not acting like leaders, they are yes-men to the crowd that continues to make us sick and feeds us substances that God had no plans for trees to grow. Then they reject the very solutions that can fix a dying persons ailment, WHY?! Lets force these two faced bastards to properly educate our children. Lets force them to provide an education for at-risk individuals, not bait towards incarceration only to have our money slipped into the biggest ponzi business in America, the prison system. Justice? Let Americans feel justice for the broken promises of job creation, healthcare, education, equal pay, opportunity to lay a future to our children, affordable food…the list could reach the moon. The voices of Americans are nothing more than spam to the professional actors, manipulators, and cons in D.C. REVOLUTION. This cancer is only getting worse.

  • nickv

So easy to deny people who were laid off through no fault of their own money that they need to survive when you getting paid for playing politics and games.

  • LaughingLion

THESE NINCOMPOOPS, DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS ALIKE, ARE THE PEOPLE RUNNING OUR GOVERNMENT !!?? They are all acting childish, immature, and petty! They are like small children who draw a line down the middle of the room and tell each other to stay on their side of the line.

I am ashamed for all Americans who have to put up with this Congress and the dysfunctional government in general. One man playing God for the Koch Brothers, the President getting laughs at our expense, and a Press that ignores the chaos and instead concentrates on fluff, sensationalism, and gossip stories. I am tired, I am weary, and I am disgusted with the clowns (politicians) running the circus (government).

    • KDuluth

Except for this blog, Fiscal Times and U.S. News and World Report (among a few others) but these are doing a brilliant job. Thank you. Huffington Post may be good, but it has so many add-ons that it nearly crashes my computer every time I try it.

  • KDuluth

I truly don’t understand the Republican theory that everyone on unemployment is a lazy-ass Democrat. Unemployment extension is being called a Partisan Issue. It wasn’t a partisan issue under Bush – it wasn’t a partisan issue until the end of 2013. What happened? Why did the GOP decide to bail on its citizens? Or is it only Boehner?

    • Shizue Leigh Hicks

It’s only BOEHNER. He operates like a Teflon Don. BOEHNER is known for handing out money to certain key people in the House. BOEHNER did it back in 2010 with the Big Tobacco influence peddlers and he’s doing it now. JOHN BOEHNER gets any vote to go his way no matter what.

The sad part about it is that everyone knows and nobody cares!

      • biggin

because Boehner smokes like a freight train

    • mrmano_0

It Republicans. An extension was in the budget until Senate Republicans threatened to filibuster and it was removed. The Senate Republicans forced the year long extension Democrats proposed down to 5months and insisted it be “paid” for. Senate Republicans have also tried attaching anti ACA amendments.

Now John Boehner is standing in the way taking the heat because he is not the on Republican in The House who does not want this bill to pass.

Republicans are also trying to force the Keystone XL pipeline in exchange for passing an extension.

Modern Republicans are America’s greatest threat foreign or domestic.

  • Teresa Smith

Be warned, Republicans. I took advantage of early voting yesterday.. I voted Democrat. I am fed up with the bullshit from both parties. 3 million Americans need these benefits and you are acting like school yard children. Democrats, don’t get to smug….I am also voting against incumbents. 3 million Americans….do you understand?

    • peoplearenodamngood

      • Scott

        I stand corrected.

  • erick

The republican party hates you and hates your way of life.

  • Mark Limbach

    1) Immediate future. Leadership on all sides need to sit down, find common ground and take care the close to 3 million of their constituents who are in dire need of assistance. Compromise.

    2) Long term. Term limits. Once in office the only thing these individuals are concerned about is getting reelected. Time to break up the party, the country club mentality. Thanks for your service (4,6 or 8 years) but your time is up.

  • mrmano_0

    We need Congressional term limits!

If it’s good enough for the President it’s good enough for Congress.

    • DJMiles

I agree….and 4 year terms for the presidency also needs to be changed….Americans are in a crisis no jobs, record high poverty, gas prices doubled,17 trillion added to countries Debt, scandals etc…We can’t wait till 2017

I think mr speaker is as anti-american as al queda when 9/11 occured thousands of americans lives were negativly affected then bin laden became public enemy #1 every resource was exhausted to bring him to justice well mister bohener isnegative impact the lives of millions of americans yet nothing Is being done he should be ashamed of himself he is truly an evil person

  • Scott

..crimes against humanity comes to mind.

  • Joseph Thomas

How stupid, how sad and yet not surprising. The basic essential needs of millions of Americans placed on hold because of a petty spat! I’m not the least bit suprised because the bible already foretold such. That man was never designed to rule himself and designate whats right and wrong. Our meager perceptive on life and wisdom is very limited. Our sinful nature prevents us from truly using our potential for good. Instead we abuse our power and take advantage of others and elevate people to a God like status, “me first attitude.” After thousands of years of trying all sorts of ways to control people it always turns out the same way. Our leaders whom despite their best efforts will always fail to take care of the basic needs of its people. Agree with that statement? This planet just needs an outright government overhaul! Why can’t these Bozo’s ever agree on anything and pass this much needed Unemployment Extension? Because Proverbs 21:2 says that “A person may think their own ways are right, but God examines the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” He evaluates their selfish un-cunning motives.

  • cynthia

Obama needs to do something to make the republicans get off their butts and do something this is getting to be pain in the you know what .They need to take part of the billions of dollars that they spent looking for another countries plane and put it in to the unemployment system god knows if it was one of our planes down we would still be waiting on their help Im sorry I am tried of my family going with out.Boehner needs a foot shoved into the unknown. If it was him and his wife living with out electric it would have been passed

  • cynthia

    Our country needs to quit worrying about every other country and worry about their own……;

  • kasia54

Blah blah blah. Bunch of lies from both parties. They should all be taken out back and shot execution style for what they have done to their own constituents.

  • kasia54

Don’t kid yourself – neither do the democrats – if they did, something would have gotten done. Don’t you kind of wonder why would they pass a bill to extend unemployment knowing full well since December that the House wouldn’t consider it for a vote? It’s all a bunch of smoke and mirrors. Washington does not care for Americans.

  • Scott

Where did we go wrong? How did Bobehead get control of the Country? Is this some sort of government mutiny?

  • Ivan

I sometimes have to pinch myself to make sure I’m awake. This is a nightmare and can’t be happening in my beloved country. What has happened to our principles? I can’t get another teaching job,so I’m looking for anything. I applied to a security firm but you need $250 up front to get the necessary credentials before they can touch you. I was an adjunct professor before I lost my job which meant I did just as much work as the associate and full profs, but was only paid per school term and without (yep you guessed it) benefits, saving the school a ton of money due to the large number of adjuncts. I have another interview at a gas station in about in hr. I check the unemployment bennies page daily and when I heard about this I just shook my head. I am close to joining the evicted/repossessed club. I’m not to the point where I want to see anyone killed, but I must admit I wouldn’t shed a tear in that event The frustration seen on these comment pages is growing by leaps and bounds. These people are not to be believed. Obama (to me) has been a major disappointment. I guess his pen has run out of ink. Those of us who will soon be in shelters must never let these miserable vermin forget what they have purposely and maliciously done to us. And also you scumbags that spew out all this bile about get off you @##@ and get a job, what the heck do you think most of us are doing? You better hope you don’t lose your job or you will be right here with us

    • LAPensFan

The President cannot sign this bill unless it’s passed in the House. He can do nothing but place pressure on the House, which he has been doing.

  • Joseph Benoit

Dear Mr John Boehner, My name is Joseph J Benoit Jr. I am one of 2.6 million Americans that you are holding hostage because some of your bills have not been passed. Mr. Boehner it is enough I have lost every thing I have worked for since I was sixteen years old and I am just disgusted the way You are holding us hostage. It is my opinion that You should be charged with crimes against humanity, we the citizens of this great country DO NOT DESERVE to be treated like this from you. I know I won’t vote for any ‘R” ever again in my lifetime. Stop thinking of party lines and start thinking “AMERICAN”

    • Shizue Leigh Hicks

USDL-14-0701 May 2, 2014 Report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the total of long-term unemployed at 3.5 million (through April).

That’s close to the population of the entire state of Oklahoma.

      • rulegal

Blame the leadership in D.C. That starts with Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Federal Reserve, and many others including Rep leaders. But the party in charge, the Democrats control the strings are are at fault in 2014.

  • HELPLESS

THIS IS A DISGRACE AND I TOO HAVE BEEN OUT OF WORK SINCE JAN THIS YEAR AND MY UNEMPLOYMENT RAN OUT AND I HAVE USED ALL MY SAVINGS TO MAKE ENDS MEET AND NOW I AM ABOUT TO LOSE EVERYTHING. THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND I SAY WE PROTEST AND MARCH TO THE WHITE HOUSE STEPS AND DEMAND THEY GIVE US OUR EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS.

    • LaughingLion

Helpless, take a look at your FAFSA filing and see if the “lack on income” will help you. I was laid off a year before we went through the FAFSA filing and the low income that I had helped. Listen, if the idiots in government can’t figure things out to help the American people, the least you can do is to take advance of the rules as they are set up. Good luck.

    • Shadow63

Can’t wait to see this happen. “People Power”

  • Mark

The good news in the headlines today is the Monica Lewinsky update. I was always wondering about her. EUC??….not so much??….Keep your eyes on the TUR…trending to go below 6 % by end-of-May making even Tier 2 extinct…if you were in the middle of Tier 2 or 3 prior to EUC expiration, you no longer qualify even if the extension passes soon..NO RETRO PAYMENTS….there’s no grandfather clause preserving the TUR you were at..

    • Scott

It’s going to get real ugly. If they screw the tier 2 and 3, that’s millions of people casted out to the wolves.

  • Scott

When do they take their next two week paid vacation?

  • Ronald Lopez

its a shame! shame on u Republicans!!!! its time 2 renewUI now!

  • peoplearenodamngood

So let me get this straight: Alexandra Sollberger said the Republican staff director was willing to let it (misnomer of meeting) slide following a phone call with the Democratic counterpart this morning and Julia Krahe, a spokeswoman for committee Democrats, confirmed Republicans made that offer, but, “By the time we got that information, it was too late to move the hearing back to the committee room.” Really?? Easier to move AV equipment and power to the front steps and back off than it was to move back to a room apparently appropriate for the meeting to begin with? These locations are adjacent, not miles away! And let’s remember: in 2009 Democratic staff for the House oversight committee changed the locks on the committee’s hearing room to force Republicans to request access – apparently over a video (Countrywide loan scandal) Republicans refused to take down from their website. Not to dismiss the unemployment topic, but equally important to me now in dysfunctional DC is not swallowing whole the trumped up sensationalism (I call it intentionally misleading, at the very best) from the apparent children in both sides of congress. Can the politicking and get to work damit!!!

    • LaughingLion

Maybe the Congressional meetings need to be in the bathrooms because everything they do is a load of crap!

      • peoplearenodamngood

thanks for my chuckle of the day.

  • Tom_F

Don’t be silly, fellow unemployed. If the Dems really wanted to solve this problem, they would find the offset money and just pass it. But it makes good ammo against Republicans. Dems would rather embarrass Repubs, than help us. Repubs would rather try to “look strong” to their $ contributors than help us. “doing the right thing” isn’t on any political agenda.

Depression is trying SO hard to set in but I have to keep fighting it. My faith must remain in God and not in this Government. Like most I’m living each day with uncertainties. I said a prayer for each one of you today. I prayed that you would have the strength and courage to make it through these hard times. I prayed that you will receive some good news very soon.

We all must pray! I was raised to believe that prayer changes things. God is the same God and he has not changed. So we have to go to him.

As for Speaker Boehner and those like him…
Isaiah 13:11 “I, the LORD, will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their sin. I will crush the arrogance of the proud and humble the pride of the mighty.

    As for all of us…

UPDATE NEWS YOU CAN USE!DONT BLOW YOUR FUSE!!YET RECIEVED FROM ABOUT.com….Update May 6, 2014: New legislation (H.R. 4550) has been introduced in the House by Congressman Michael Fitzpatrick which would extend expired Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) which expired in December. It would also add six new jobs bills to the legislation passed by the Senate on April 7. However, the bill would need to pass both the House and Senate in order to be approved.

    • DJMiles

H.R 4550 is not a unemployment extension it is a proposed amendment to add job training and employer incentives to the Senate passed 5 month extension.

      • Aces High

respectfully..it is a new addendum that they are adding to it…ill allow the article to speak for itself..alot of attention to the bill took place today,,,,,

        • DJMiles

What happened with it today? Last I seen friday it was just referred to committee with a 1% chance of being enacted.

Why do Republicans have such a love affair with the Keystone XL pipeline?
It will be built with Indian Steel, employ large numbers of Canadian workers and all shipped to China.

The United States bears much of the risk and gains very little.

Why are Republicans so hung up on the keystone XL pipeline?

      • DJMiles

We have a president that’s addicted to oil….I fact he’s so obsessed with it that oil exports are at a all time high! I miss the bush days when gas was only $1.50 a gallon.

        • Nemesis4Life

me too! I just seen it at almost $4/gallon…and raising wages is a problem…I am really starting to think there aren’t very many logical thinking people in the world…so sad!

  • Advocate

The participation rate is pitiful and since millions stopped looking for work the unemployment rate dropped. This is NOT a good sign. When the long-term unemployed do not have funds to pursue employment they stop looking. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see this is a problem.

Contact John Boehner and have him move the extended unemployment bill forward.

    John Boehner:
    Phone: (202) 225-0600
(#1 to leave a message #2 to speak with his assistant)

    PHONE JAM BOEHNER

Absolutely correct. Lack of funds to get gas, carfare, internet wireless service, etc. to attain employment all of which require finances. It is a setback and disbenefit for the jobless. Then we say to them “you need to find work.” How is this possible when they can’t even afford to look for a job or even get to a job interview. This is sinister treatment of our disadvantaged.

Absolutely no bills could be signed by the President unless the Democrat controlled Senate also passes them so for anyone to believe that extending unemployment is a priority for the Democrats then why did the Republicans $900,000,000,000 farm bill get passed? The Doc fix? Repeal of COLA? Democrats could have easily attached the unemployment extension to all those and sent the bill back over to the house. …Also Obama could have sent them back to Congress and demanded EUC be passed before signing any of the bills.

I’m tired of hearing everyone blaming the democrats and/or republicans…blah blah blah! Obama is the president, why doesn’t he do like ALL the presidents before him and work with all the parties involved to get this resolved? All of you democrats pointing fingers at Boehner and all of you republicans pointing fingers at Obama. Here’s a quick question for you…so the democrats didn’t include it in the budget they passed…ANDDDD Obama didn’t insist on it, why? The Republicans are sitting there like “I’m not doing anything until Obama calls me”…so why hasn’t Obama called them? Instead Obama was busy cracking jokes at our expense at a Dinner he held over the weekend on tax payers money. Boehner is busy smoking and avoiding everything, the Senate sent a bill to the House that they knew would never get looked at just so it takes the pressure off of them…so tell me, has anyone questioned any of these actions by these people? I guess I’m the only one. I’m losing everything I own and bout to be homeless because they are all acting worse than a 2 year old. I swear, reading some of these comments…you really aren’t that stupid are you? To think Obama is great? The democrats are trying to do right by us? The republicans hate everyone? WAKE UP PEOPLE…I’m so ashamed of this generation of people. The news don’t report on this because it would start a revolution if they told the truth…the nation needs to be aware of what this is doing to their people in this country.

And PLEASE…the democrats blaming the Republicans yet again for their mistakes. They did this on purpose so that they could gain more voters in the elections…and you all fell for it! Hook, line and sinker…Are we really that gullible?

And do not think I’m all Republican…I vote for the candidate I think is best for office…and this election I will vote for people who are NOT backed by corporations! Our real unemployment rate is 25 million people…how do you compete with that? Just saying…and trust they can make those numbers look any way they want…I’ve worked with statistics and everything else and it’s so easy to get the numbers to say what you want them to!

    I AM A SHEOPLE NO MORE….

    • peoplearenodamngood

absolutely, Dude! Need to question all of them all the time about every damn thing. It’s like what Judge Judy says about teenagers – if their mouths are moving, they’re lying. So called reporters happy to peddle a particular purely political slant go in this dung heap with Congress – ALL OF THEM ARE OWNED, and we the people mean diddly in their daily pursuits.

      • Nemesis4Life

Exactly! They are OWNED…they got in because the 1% wanted them in…and the reporters…HA! They are too afraid to lose their jobs and end up like us so they report on what they are told to report on!

    • Joseph Thomas

You got the Democrats who preach about their Democratic party and its platform and campaign promises. Then you got the Republicans who preach about the Republican party and its policies and promises? There are other various political parties like Socialists, Communists, Conservatives, and the list goes on. You touched on it a little when you said quote” I swear, reading some of these comments…you really aren’t that stupid are you? ” Yes! I agree! These politician clam loyalty to the public, but are divided lukewarm and neither hot nor cold. Their like adolescent teens who lack wisdom. They can’t unify there political polices use common sense and wisdom. Wisdom implies a breadth of knowledge and a depth of understanding. But imperfect humans simply cannot form perfect governments. As writer Thomas Carlyle noted in 1843: “In the long-run every government is the exact symbol of its people, with their wisdom and unwisdom.” Who can argue against logic like that?

      • Nemesis4Life

Your so right! I can’t believe that everyone thinks their vote counts…it DOESN’T COUNT…the 1% is who chooses who gets in. They just want you to think you have a voice. You have NO voice. I was just thinking…I wonder what would happen if NO ONE showed up to the voting places? All of us in this nation could get together and just decide NOT to go…what would they do then? lol…a new campaign, Your vote doesn’t matter…DON’T vote!!!

The reason nothing is done anymore is because of the fact that these people were paid to be there by the Corporations, they know that even on voting day with all their stupidity and ignorant ways they will still be in office. This is why our country is falling apart. When did we give all the power to the Corporations? I about fell on the floor laughing when they needed to hire people to work on the Obamacare website and outsourced it to another country??? Where are you people…that was your Democratic President and all his Democratic friends along with the Republicans. All the Tech’s on EUC and they couldn’t give them a job to fix it???

PEOPLE WAKE UP!!! Stop fighting and let’s start thinking…seriously…we all need to come together and solve this problem since the people we have leading us can’t!

Oh wait…I forgot I’m lazy and stupid…I don’t know what I’m talking about! SMH…even if I was offered a job, I would prefer sitting at home typing on here instead of putting a roof over my families head and food on the table, according to all the people who have a job. Fun fact…I had to take a personality test before I graduated college and the results came back and stated that only 8% of the world thinks like I do…I said, that makes sense and now I know why people get on my nerves as bad as they do.

On election day…DON’T VOTE! Don’t show up…that’s what my new motto is…I seriously do wonder what would happen if no one showed up to vote…

        • JurasicallyOldLady

I’ve thought about voting but asking for a paper ballot then writing in my own box “None of the above” and handing it in. Just like in the Richard Pryor movie “Brewster’s Millions”.

          • Nemesis4Life

That’s what I’m saying and I’m glad someone else is thinking like me….lol I think they (ALL the Government) needs a wake up call to who they really work for…it’s not the corporations…it’s us!

Are you effing kidding me? Where are the adults that work for us in Congress? Surely, these are not them! Families are losing their homes, kids are not eating well, and the quality of many lives are in jeopardy. Parents had to struggle and scramble around to line up sitters so they could work, other formerly-employed folk worked hard, paid taxes and voted, now these spoiled jerks are arguing over where to meet. Really? No really? It sounds like lame a**ed excuses to keep from making the right decision on this life-altering matter. It is absolutely despicable, and inhumane that elected officials would play with the lives of the people that put them in office. I suggest they all read the chapter in the ‘elected official’ handbook, no where does it say your seat is yours for life-we do have to vote again you know.

    • Shizue Leigh Hicks

Sadly, BOEHNER is above the law. Try bribery/influence peddling on the House floor. Bob Herbert of the New York Times told us in October 2010 that Big Tobacco greases many a wheel in our government. “That’s Where the Money Is” and BOEHNER has been known to hand out the bucks:

  • Dellhar

I have asked this question over, and over again, yet still have no answer:

How is it determined that millions of people have dropped out of the workforce? Are these people taking early retirements, signing up for welfare, cashing out their 401(k) and other savings plans, calling the unemployment office to say I’m no longer looking for a job and have dropped out of the workforce?

My point is, how can these individuals be tracked and the numbers presented be legitimate when there is no way to actually count them?

What is the method for counting people who have dropped out of the workforce?

    • Joseph Thomas

So you wanna know where do the statistics come from? I’ll take a crack at it….I’d like to think they come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S.. Each month the Department of Labor announces the total number of employed and unemployed. You might think they solely get this number by counting people who file for unemployment insurance. That would be an inaccurate estimate cause you didn’t count those who don’t qualify, never even desired to apply, or just ran out on prior to December’s shut down. Our country uses whats called the Current Population Survey to get you’re magical number. Google it for more info. A certain amount of people are interviewed regarding their activities engaged during a reference week and never asked ” Um…. are you Unemployed?” Of course there are strict guidelines, rules and procedures I didn’t mention but the possible error resulting from interview sampling is little because its the basic source for that number.

      • Dellhar

How is the sample chosen and which “communities” are being surveyed? In my nearly 5 decades of living, I have never been called to complete one of these surveys.

My point is I believe that the unemployment figures are being massaged. Manipulated would be a better description.

So, just how does one count people who don’t qualify for unemployment or who never applied for unemployment?

These people are off the radar, and as I mentioned before, not being tracked. Did they get new jobs, retire, apply for welfare? Who knows. All of these people are not being called and asked to complete a community survey.

Everything in print is not gospel. Just because a survey states a margin of error does not mean it’s so.

            What were you saying….?

      • Arrest Obama

The problem with that is we now have an underclass of people who have exhausted benefits or never qualified for them.

This doesn;t count the number of people who are not working and able to work or desire to have work but have no means of procuring or keeping up a measurable work search.

Failing to see 1/3 of the US population is the reason Obama needs to be tried at trial.

    • Nemesis4Life

Also, to add to Mr Thomas. I like to call it survival of the fittest. There are actually around 25 million people looking for work in our country alone. If everyone had a ‘job’ that the ‘government’ says is there, 8 million people would still be out of work. There aren’t enough jobs to support the amount of people in the world. And we keep having babies, saving all the sick, and etc. I’m a very compassionate person…so don’t take that the wrong way. However, how do they create enough jobs so that every person has one? That is the true dilemma. On the other hand, they can’t just let us starve to death and be homeless because they are to immature and ignorant to work together as a team. We deserve some sort of help, and they want us to not have it…it’s very sad!

As I said earlier…I think we should all get together and just don’t vote on election days…no one show up to the polls. How else do you get a point across to them if you let either side think they have a chance of winning you over??? And there would be no violence, so they can’t say it’s a revolution and start killing us off…because in reality…that’s what they want, to eliminate some of the population so the stronger can survive…

          • Arrest Obama

Also I would love to point out that Democratic, Blue and socialist leaning leftist California, my native state,

has a limit on TANF that is 9 months and the same also goes for SNAP having limits.

People act like it lasts forever. It doesn’t Section 8 also has a cap of 5 years per LIFETIME.

The only way people can get out of this is if they are on SSDI but that is honestly a tiny fractional percentage of the USA population.

Also TANF is a loan and if you don’t pay it back it comes out of your SSRI retirement AUTOMATICALLY.

So people know GR in CA is a LOAN, NOT A HANDOUT JUST LIKE MEDICAID..

And ACA needs repealed because NO ONE SHOULD BE MANDATED TO TAKE A LOAN FOR MEDICAL PROVIDERS TO GET A BLANK CHECK FROM OBAMA..

People need to stop pretending TANF and SNAP are a handout, they’re loans that need paying back with your SSRI taxes paid in and will delay retirement.

          • Nemesis4Life

I agree!!! I used to be one of those people who thought people that were on welfare did it to make money and not have to work. Being on welfare now to feed my kid, I know it’s not true. I’m not saying that there isn’t a certain group of people that do this to rip the government and tax payers off. But seriously…where are all these jobs? As people draw money out of their investments to live on stock prices drop with too many sellers and not enough buyers. The REPUBLICANS just do not even understand ECONOMICS 101 !! Thank God I get to sign up for Social Security 25 months from now…. hopefully the REPUBLICANS don’t find a way to stop Social Security before I die!

    • Joseph Thomas

In my opinion voting democrat would just bring about the same complaints in due time. In the United States there are Republicans, Democrats, Socialists, Communists, Conservatives, and various militants. Who is to say which party or group is the best for the people, not to say anything about these “petty spatts” and getting others to agree. They have continued to disagree radically with one another on their political ideologies. This article bluntly shows that the wisdom of imperfect man is contradictory. Why should it be such a struggle to agree on providing basic provisions for the American people, or in any country? But a lot of us are going to be bewildered when they try to permanently sweep social security out of existence. This just might be on the agenda very soon. John A. Boehner can’t resist the sublet grip of his rapacious desire for more influence of the American people. The result is complaints conflicts and even war! Granted only a few desperately unemployed would result to crime but why should we settle for less? True we need some sort of Democrat Republican Democratic political system to prevent mod rule in our country. But to whom can we look for guidance?

This started 50 years ago with Nixon and even if they think they can change things before they take over the office they were voted for…they realize once they get in there is nothing they can do with all the bills that were put in place and everything else. We all have this innate given ability to use knowledge and understanding successfully to solve problems, avoid or avert dangers, attain certain goals, or counsel others in doing so. It is the opposite of foolishness, stupidity, and madness, with which it is often portrayed by your actions. No, it’s not to late to use you’r discretion to passing this EUC. This implies prudence and may be expressed in caution when tampering with the lively hood of millions of people. Why show little respect and attention to them and rather wager a warfare? Hence, no matter what your plans are , no mater how much wisdom you think you have by virtue of skill in trades, shrewdness in commerce, administrative ability, or scientific or philosophic learning, the rule is: “If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this system of things, let him become a fool.” (1Co 3:18) And that’s what these people, those people, the one who put you in office, me, and more importantly bible say you are. It’s a divine maximum that you reap what you sow.

The party you vote for DOES MATTER.
Republicans want to shrink the federal government down to a point where it cannot regulate business or meet the needs of the American people.

This unemployment extension mess is part of the Republicans effort to weaken and disable the federal government.

If Democrats really wanted this to pass then why hasn’t the Democratic President stepped up? again…WAKE UP people…they don’t care!!!

      • mrmano_0

I’m not sure what slavery has to do with anything. The Democrats of the 19th Century are not the Democrats of the 21st Century.

President Lincoln today would be drummed out of the Republican party of today labeled a RINO.

These modern Republicans expressed goal is to destroy the federal government to make it easier to deregulate air, water, labor standards and make life alot tougher for the regular citizen.

Republicans don’t want compromise. They want Keystone XL despite the fact that it poses substantial rusk to the American homeland. They want to destroy the ACA by coming up with a myriad of ways to defund it. And, they want to deregulate industry as if we could even come close to what it cost to do business in China.

Republicans will come for Social Security last they’ve hated it since FDR created it and if they gain the majority they need it will be privatized like Bush tried to do.

The modern Republican party is America’s greatest threat foreign or domestic.

        • Nemesis4Life

You still didn’t answer my questions tho? I asked you a lot of questions about the Democrats and what they are doing to block unemployment as well and you are still throwing the Republicans under the bus. If you are going to support the Democratic way of politics shouldn’t you know what they are doing and be able to defend them?

Why isn’t President Obama talking with the Republicans? Why didn’t President Obama (since he is all about helping us on euc) veto the budget and tell them that it needs to be included? Why did it take the Senate so long to come up with a bill that would only last a month?

Come on…I’m not pro anyone. The Keystone Pipeline isn’t to help us…it’s for the Corporations. It will cause more harm than good. Very good points you made…but what about the Democrats? What are they for? All’s I hear is them trying to block everything and not promote anything. And as Arrest Obama stated…the ACA isn’t to help people it’s to make people poorer…due to your Democratic party…

You really can’t be a die hard Democrat and think that what they are doing is for the good of the people? They all SUCK!!! and we are all losing our homes, families, and livelihood because of all of them! do they care??? no…they get to go home to their mansions and even if they are thrown out of office they are set for the rest of their lives…boy, I should have went into politics…I would be paid VERY well to manipulate people like you and laugh my way to the bank!!!

          • mrmano_0

Republicans are obstructionist and have repeatedly shown their unwillingness to negotiate. Republicans have shut down the government forced drastic spending cuts while insisting on tax breaks for large corporate interest. I haven’t thrown the Republicans under the bus, Republicans have thrown the American people under the bus.

This entire emergency unemployment extension mess is the fault of the Republican party. Starting with Ryan not allowing it in the budget to Senate Republicans stalling and trying to add poison pills to the bill, to John Boehner not allowing the bill to come to a vote on the House floor. Even though Boehner snuck through the Medicare doc fix in April worth billions of tax payer dollars for millionaire medicare doctors and with NO pay fors

As i stated in another post…why did it take the Democrats so long to come up with a EUC bill? Why didn’t the President demand that EUC be included in the budget before he signed it? Your not saying anything that answers my questions. You just keep yelling it’s the Republicans fault…I’m unaffiliated, I vote for the person I think is best for the job! I just want you to open your eyes and see that they are ALL doing this and I think Boehner is an arse…they ALL are. Reed knew the stipulations and yet it took him 4 months to get it passed?

None of them care…they are ALL using us for elections in November…and EUC won’t be passed until they are sure they are losing voters…on all sides. The President isn’t even trying to talk to him…it’s sad and we are all pawns to these people. How do any of them get what they want in a bill that they want passed…use us as hostage!

I’m disgusted with them all! They all make me sick and I can’t believe I live in an America where this is happening…this isn’t what I thought America was. Now I know why other countries hate us…we are picking terrible people to represent us!

and yes…you still never answered my questions about the Democrats…you just keep rambling on and on about the Republicans…Can’t you see they are all doing it? Democrats are just as wrong as the republicans…they have the news people on their side to spin it how they want…

“Today the forces of liberalism face a crisis. The people of the United States must make a choice between two ways of living — a decision which will affect us the rest of our lives and our children and our grandchildren after us.

On the other side, there is the Wall Street way of life and politics. Trust the leader! Let big business take care of prices and profits! Measure all things by money! That is the philosophy of the masters of the Republican Party.

Well, I have been studying the Republican Party for over 12 years at close hand in the Capital of the United States. And by this time, I have discovered where the Republicans stand on most of the major issues.

Since they won’t tell you themselves, I am going to tell you.

They approve of the American farmer — but they are willing to help him go broke.

They stand four-square for the American home — but not for housing.

They are strong for labor — but they are stronger for restricting labor’s rights.

They favor a minimum wage — the smaller the minimum the better.

They indorse educational opportunity for all — but they won’t spend money for teachers or for schools.

They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine — for people who can afford them.

They approve of Social Security benefits — so much so that they took them away from almost a million people.

They favor the admission of displaced persons — but only within shameful racial and religious limitations.

They consider electric power a great blessing — but only when the private power companies get their rake-off.

They say TVA is wonderful — but we ought never to try it again.

They condemn “cruelly high prices” — but fight to the death every effort to bring them down.

They think the American standard of living is a fine thing — so long as it doesn’t spread to all the people.

And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.

Now, my friends, that is the Wall Street Republican way of life. But there is another way — there is another way — the Democratic way, the way of the Democratic Party.”
            ~Harry Truman – Oct. 1948

I am trying to determine who is worse the far left of the Democratic Party or the far right of the Republican Party. Both are destroying this country, In my state its the far right, they have shown themselves to be utterly despicable. See if you can see “12 years a slave” this country has got some really deep rooted wounds, these current Repukelicans are racists, no question, no question. At the end of the day, they need to be voted out of office.,,,Look at ole Mitt Romney, he helps put together Mass. health care system, then runs against it, stupid is a nice word for it. Look at the President, he puts on some great theatre w/regard to the long term unemployed, then when the rubber hits the road he is nowhere to be found. Again I hope and I pray Charlie Crist wins in Florida, to me he is the only honest politician on the scene today, and by the way Charlie, thanks for cutting Jim some slack :), He is a pragmatist and we need more good men like him who can admit they were wrong. Next thing the Repukelicans will do is bring back for profit debtor prisons, I guess I will see you there, NO HARD WORK please I am too lazy for that. Welcome to the world of UGLY.

        • Nemesis4Life

LOL…that’s what I’m saying …they all make me sick! I agree the Republicans aren’t what they used to be…it’s so sad.

I was thinking that we will all end up in FEMA camps, because we are “Lazy” as they say. I laugh when the same government that won’t pay me…is calling me about my student loan payments…HA HA!!! I ain’t got no monies…lol.

They have to raise taxes on the middle class because there aren’t enough of us in the work force to pay the taxes. I would really like to see the ‘true’ numbers that we aren’t seeing for everything. ALL THE SPENDING…we will never get to see it though…smh And god forbid the corporations that laid us ALL off have to pay for what they’ve done!

I really wish we had the support of a musician behind this. Maybe doing a few shows and expressing their outrage in this situation. Music speaks volumes. Come on Eddie Vedder. He has been vocal about the wrong doings of people in power in the past. I wish someone like him would do a few shows in support of getting this bill passed. To all those suffering please don’t do anything drastic. Hang In there the best you can. I admit I half been halfway into a bottle of whiskey with a gun in my hand thinking of ending my life. 3 times over the last 4 months. God is helping me not do it.

Great idea to get an entertainer involved. I’ll start looking up some and e-mailing them now.

Hold on. Things will get better. You will survive this.

You think any of them have control?

Sure. Their corporate conglomerate record labels don’t give a rats arrrse if you beg.

Musicians don’t get paid they pay to start touring and thats it. Your MSM liberal musicians make anyone with real talent want to scream and throw themselves into the garbage disposal..

I can’t afford to not have a day-job and do ‘music’, can you? What a JOKE.

MUSIC BUSINESS PAYS 000000.001 cent in royalties to their little scumbag elite liberal artists who would go to work for a company that cannot even pay its regular employees on W-2 instead of 1099 and pay the legal minimum wage instead of pretending its moonlight employees are on ‘contract pay’ or ‘interns’..

      Loud flatulence ahead..

JUST PASS EUC AND STOP PLAYING THE GAME..

Look up the net worth of musicians. Vedder. Cornell. Plant. Page. Etc. What in the world are you talking about? They don’t make money?

I’m an accountant and I’ve seen many a bank statement of many a coproration and yes, entertainers as well.

Its all media propaganda and lies. How will they speak up? They are recognized wherever they go.

You cannot silence me and you cannot tell me to refute the evidence I have seen with my own eyes to believe some sham reporter who makes more money than the artists themselves on actual paper.

Did you know any work-related prize awarded to an artist by a label (their employer) is not worth cash but some prizes awarded on national television might be reported as up to a million dollars in worth, and required to be reported to the IRS as income and is taxable? However it won’t buy a thing. Its a plastic, brass object that costs these people money and I think the people propagating the lies and media prison the artists on the A-list should be imprisoned and made bankrupt as without their little dog doing tricks their net worth plunges to -000000000

          Smart or stupid?

Sure… They all bought a 9.9 billion dollar house with it and cannot afford to keep their selves in a modest, 100k condo, right? YEAH RIGHT. No one is that stupid, but you all pretend it is so.

The pot calling the kettle black..

Look BOTH parties need to stop adding huge rider bills to the EUC bill.

Trying to ‘clog the pipes with diapers and garbage’ is why we cannot flush a simple EUC bill through and get it passed.

      STOP playing party politics.

The reason this administration is not effective is because Obama requires 8 reams of paper and 86 different bills attached to anything that should be passed automatically and then the original bill is dead in the water because he vetoes anything that is a single issue bill without one of HIS pet projects attached.

      MORE SMOKE AND MIRRORS.

Good Afternoon all…This about sums it up, this modern
day Repukelican party is a vermin that must be squashed. The nerve, the
audacity, the smugness, the ugly, the ugly, the ugly. Our worst fears have
been realized, our forefathers worst nightmare has come to fruition. When
greedy ugly politicians turn their backs on hardworking Americans this game is
over. I read one comment about a long term unemployed American had to sell
their wedding bands my heart sank to the floor. Here is the “Marketing
Plan” for the next election, the most important election of our times.

People when considering the Repukelican, “Close your
eyes, imagine you lost your job through no fault of your own, and you have
searched for work with no success. This Repukelican asking for your will cut
you off, provide you with no security, call you lazy, so if this is the
country you want to live in, raise your children in, you have at it.

A vote for the Republican is a vote for Devil
reincarnate, plain and simple. They are viscous, vindictive, vermin that need
to be washed out of the system, and it will be up to good and decent people
like yourselves, We got this. Close your eyes and truly soul search people,
They have committed, in my humble opinion, I am still allowed to have an
opinion, the greatest form of treason possible and that is to turn their backs
    on Women/Children/Veterans.

    No greater shame can come
to them, and as I have posted prior, upon their departure from their earthly
form, St Peter will be standing at the pearly gates and he will ask this
question, he will ask them when Jesus was hungry where were you. Then it gets
warmer and warmer and even warmer, and then they will reside with devil
for all eternity. These men and women of the Repukelican party are Evil, so vote
for them and see what happens to your soul. I am glad I have seen the light. My
prayers are with you all…who will save your soul, only you can.

    • Nemesis4Life

Again…the Democrats are better? Here’s an eye opener for you…The Democrats are the majority party and they can’t do crap about anything. They rule the Senate and the Presidency…and it’s the Republicans fault??? Seriously…I don’t get it…Tell me what the Democrats have done that’s any better than the Republicans?

      • ex-Republican

Hey buddy, back in HS I debated the merits of Reaganomics in the Model UN format, I grew up in a Republican Household, the Democratic Party always miffed me, thought they were fringe weirdo’s, but this group of Repukelicans is not the Republican party I grew up in. Look around smell the coffee, I am the type thanks to my Fathers compassion for those with less of everything. Go back to your value system. If you needed my Fathers help he would act in kind, Hard work was number 1, but helping your fellow brothers and sisters was a top priority. Is it not hypocritical that they would pass extending UI prior, but not now. I have an amazing Resume(I think, anyway), but I now Know what be discriminated against feels like, I guess I am over the hill in my mid 40′s. Every Democrat sees the problems on the ground, and are being pragmatic, these Repukelicans would turn their backs on their fellow brothers and sisters. Remember the Momma’s boy sissy’s in school, well again never in my wildest would I think that they would be Republicans. What would Jesus do, would he turn his back on his brothers and sisters, I would think not. This group has forgotten the most important Golden Rule. You treat others, as you would like to be treated. I am a huge Charlie Crist(Florida) fan, this guy is Aces in my book. One would have to have been brought up in a decent family to see, that what this current group of Repukelicans are doing, Class is something that can not be purchased, its internal. Watch the movie “12 years a Slave” and tell me honestly that the Slave Master you see in the film, is not the current Repukelican. I completely understand because I was brought up by a Father (He is in Heaven Now) who developed my value system, neither he nor I are perfect, but two things stand out, hypocracy and selfishness, he was neither. This Repukelican party is both. Go to church on Sunday and learn something new.

At $168,411.00 yearly salary, the Speaker of the House is
way out of touch with the American constituency he was placed in office to
serve. Very few of the unemployed being snubbed by John Boehner have even come
close to earning his amount of yearly compensation. The Speaker of the House gets
nearly a million extra to defray his costs of travel, room and board etc.yearly. Please correct me if I am wrong with these figures as I took them from the
Congressional Budget Office website. I can not understand how the American
people have been snowed all these years into thinking this person was working
for anything other than his own agenda. I will go a step further in stating
that I believe personally that to stand in the way of any legislation simply
because it is not written the way I would have written it is morally and
ethically wrong if not bordering on treason which is a crime that undermines
the offender’s government and an act of deliberate betrayal. We the people in
America vote our conscience, I personally can not in any way vote for a
Republican ever again in my life due to the actions of John Boehner tainting my perception of the
political party, our system of government and the political integrity of those
    we place in office.

    • Shizue Leigh Hicks

Actually minimum salary of congress is 335.000 they get an annual signing bonus and that was his recorded take home

On the other side of the coin Obama could wave that magic pen for Ukrainian relief but allow millions of Americans to starve and go homeless and to me that’s just another way of outsourcing we need to strengthen America and stop being the welfare of the world we spend billions and billions on war that never has or had anything to do with Americans.

We just need to have the Unemployment Bill go for as vote without a tow rig attached to it..

If the unemployment bill is a race car why are they attaching a mobile home to the back of it?

Meaning no package bills overshadowing it on EITHER side, whether it is Keystone or ultra-inflationary minimum wage bills.

Do the unemployed, either R or D really need to stand in the shade of agendas on either side?

The problems not the EUC bills.

The problem is that the EUC bill gets morphed by either party into something else.

WRITE AN UNEMPLOYMENT BILL. THATS IT. Stop attaching 888 riders to it!

Stop pandering party politics and let us have our unemployment bill be passed and given retroactive EUC without bull garbage drowning the original bill before it even gets past the floor!

    • mrmano_0

The emergency unemployment extension with retroactive payments should be lean and clean, no doubt.

I’d like to see lawmakers combine Keystone XL and minimum wage increases into one bill and watch partisan heads explode.

  • Yonatan YONATAN

Those people who think that the unemployed are “lazy”, and prefer collecting unemployment benefits, have no clue of the reality facing these families. Most of these people had long term employment, and had families to support. The majority of them are “older” Americans, who had worked for many years, paying into the system, should they become unemployed, and needed financial assistance. These workers through no fault of their own, found themselves victims of corporate downsizing, and were laid off from their jobs. Given the current economic recession, they have had a particularly difficult time finding employment. Also, many companies are not motivated to hire “older” workers, due in part of the higher cost of health care insurance for older workers. Older workers, just on the basis of their age, would be placed in a “higher risk” group, which would affect the potential employer’s bottom line cost. As we all know, it’s all about profit and “the bottom line”. Since last December, more than 2.6 million workers have been without unemployment benefits. The republican senate has held the extension bill “HOSTAGE”, in the hopes of getting the XL Oil Pipeline passed by the president. This has NEVER been about these unfortunate families, but only about pleasing the lobbyist for whom they truly serve. While the republicans continue playing “party politics”, and using these families for political leverage, and as bargaining chips, these families have had to face evictions, home foreclosures, personal bankruptcy, and homelessness. Most of them have watched their credit being destroyed, because of lack of money to pay their bills on time, or at all. How many more families have to become homeless and destitute before the senate finally PASSES the extension bill? This truly is a national crime against the American family. While the politicians live their affluent and privileged lifestyles, with all the perks of office, these families continue to suffer and struggle to eat and to live

I read that the salary for all house members
was capped at the $168,411.00 yearly figure but if not the figure of
$223,500.00 is simply that much more abominable. Thank you Shizue Leigh Hicks
for the new figures, seems to me that all House members are so far out of touch
with those they are meant to work for that the power struggles have nothing to
do with the population any more.

    • Shizue Leigh Hicks

The new figure for BOEHNER’s base salary is from his own website. (I guess if it’s referred to as a “base salary” it sounds low enough to be inoffensive).

However, the Huffington Post, the New York Times, Crooks & Liars, and other online sources have found that his stated BOEHNER’s base salary goes nowhere near the reality of $900,000 take-home in 2013.

  • Shizue Leigh Hicks

The gall to end all gall. I had e-mailed JOHN BOEHNER to urge him
(in very nice, sedate terms) to reinstate the UI Extension Benefits.
There was even a “please” in there somewhere.

I mentioned there are veterans, parents, and other men and women who were barely existing because of zero dollars since December.

BOEHNER’s only response — a Mother’s Day message received in my e-mail today. One glance told me where the message was headed. Photo of him hugging his own mother and an attached video. I deleted it without watching.

BOEHNER, if you care so much about motherhood, there are plenty of mothers struggling to keep their children alive — fed and housed. These mothers have the
bad luck of being one of the long-term unemployed. Let’s celebrate and
    honor them!

BOEHNER, prove that you truly care and fast-track the UI Extension, PLEASE!

I wanted to say that I agree with a lot of you on here that there are
some issues that need to be corrected, but everyone is arguing about
which issues and who is right and wrong which to me is the largest issue
and exactly what Congress is doing. Does it matter who is right or
wrong? Can everyone agree that leaving 3.5 million Americans with no way
to pay their bills, no way to get to an interview or have good credit
when they do happen to get that lucky interview, have a place to live,
food to eat or transportation. These are people that worked their
entire lives and for what ever reason are being discriminated against.

was 18, I am now 59. She has worked since she was 16 and she is now 53.
She has had so many interviews I cant count them anymore. She has said
the minute they find out she is unemployed they end the interview or
they see her age and they are polite but find an excuse and move on to
other applicants. She knows this because she used to hire people. Her
boss who was 60, died from his feeling of worthlessness and the
complications that ensued from the stress of losing everything. She
fought back for awhile, but finally gave up when she realized this was
just a election year and felt that the unemployed were being used as a
prop for photos and she refused to partake in that any further, she was at the hearing mentioned in this article and spoke at it. She
tried to get people to stand up for their rights but found people didnt
really want to do that..so she stopped. I hope that the Government does
help everyone, I really do, I have seen some bad things happen in the
past 8 months. I wish all of you well.
