The District is known for having unpredictable weather, as well as influxes of interns. With each passing semester, they descend upon Washington to fill a variety of paid and unpaid positions.
But how many interns come to the District with an already established circle of friends? Not many. And how many reach Washington and realize that their unpaid or poorly-paid position doesn’t fund much of a social life? Most, if not all.
But a new free website, aptly named internlocale.com, is set to launch Sept. 9th and aims to put best-for-budget events right at an intern’s fingertips while connecting them with fellow interns around the city.
Jordyn Kinney and Allison Anderson, co-founders of Intern Locale, developed their idea from their own unpaid internships.
Kinney said they had difficulty finding things to do that didn’t break the bank or didn’t include thousands of tourists. “We’re here to save interns money,” said Kinney. “We want to not only connect interns, but connect interns with what our wonderful city has to offer.”
Intern Locale envisions itself to be a space of events that stretch beyond happy hours, and are listed throughout the year, not just during summer months or “hot times” of interning.
Their first event for the new startup is this Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Crios Modern Mexican Restaurant (2120 P St NW). Happy hour specials include half-price draft beers, $4 Mexican beers, $5 margaritas, and $2 off appetizers.
