Want a Roadie? Union Market Provides

Ah, the roadie. It means so many things (more on that later). The latest incarnation of this magical word, though, means something special for NoMa neighborhood workers who long for a lunch that doesn’t include the Potbelly-Roti-Chipotle Industrial Complex: Passage to Union Market and its bevy of food vendors.

Red Apron, Takorean, Buffalo Bergen, Rappahannock Oyster Bar and more await those who take Union Market’s free shuttle, the Roadie. The Roadie runs every 20 minutes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. It picks up folks at three stops: the 1200 block of Third Street Northeast (around M Street), the east side of the 100 block of L Street Northeast (at First Street Northeast) and the Union Market stop at 1309 Fifth Street NE.

Truth be told, if you’re around NoMa or Union Station, Union Market has always seemed just a wee bit out of walking range, unless it’s one of those days where you have sanctioned lollygagging. So the Roadie is a welcome development in dining options for a district that seems to be growing at a geometric pace.

Plus, we can all laugh at all the different meanings of the word “roadie.” It’s good for every aspect of the unholy trinity of sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll.

According to the Urban Dictionary, one of the more common definitions is that of “an individual who is responsible for setting up, tearing down, and generally maintaining the equipment for a band.” Another definition of roadie is “an alcoholic beverage consumed while driving. In other words, a stupid but incredibly epic adventure,” according to UD. For the teetotalers out there, a roadie can be “a car trip where passengers smoke marijuana.” And then, not to be left out, the roadie can also be a situation “when an individual recieves sexual favors while on a road trip.” There are a few pages that go along with UD’s “roadie” entry, but you get the picture. And thank you to the marketer who dreamed up the name. It will come in handy for smart alecs all over NoMa from here on out.
