FERC Grants Expedited Process for Kentucky Hydro Project

Kentucky River Lock and Dam 11 (Commonwealth of Kentucky)

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission this week approved the use of a two-year licensing process for a hydropower project at a century-old dam on the Kentucky River.

Free Flow Power Project 92, LLC applied in May to add 5 megawatts of hydropower generation to Kentucky River Lock and Dam 11, built for transportation in 1906.

The company plans to add an adjustable 3.5-foot crest gate above the dam and build a powerhouse holding two generators within the existing lock structure.  New power lines would connect to an existing substation 4.5 miles away near Waco, Ky.

In a bill passed last year, Congress directed FERC to establish a two-year licensing program and develop projects to test the process.
