Utah Tar Sands Operation Sparks Protests

More than a dozen activists protesting a Canadian company’s oil sands development in Utah were arrested Monday, according to protesters.

Uintah County sheriff’s deputies arrested protesters who were chained to a fence at a US Oil Sands site in northeast Utah, according to the group Utah Tar Sands Resistance.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a site 50 miles south of Vernal, according to The Salt Lake Tribune, which reported that the department would not comment on the arrests. The sheriff also did not respond to calls from CQ Roll Call or Reuters.

Canadian-based US Oil Sands estimates there to be 184 million barrels of bitumen at its PR Spring project area, where it plans to surface mine bitumen ore for processing onsite starting next year and expects to be the first commercial tar sands operation in the United States. The company holds leases on 32,005 acres of land in Utah’s Uintah Basin.

The Utah Supreme Court dismissed a case against the project last month.

Oil is not a fossil fuel. It’s made deep in the earth. Drill down about 40,000 feet, and find all we need. Cheep.
