Updated 12:25 p.m. | Capitol Police confiscated a 9mm Ruger handgun from the bag of Camden, S.C., resident Ronald William Prestage shortly after 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning at the Cannon House Office Building. Prestage, 59, was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a license, a District of Columbia offense that carries up to five years in prison.

Records indicate he has a concealed carry permit in South Carolina. Prestage is a veterinarian and farm operator, and is president-elect of the National Pork Producers Council. He may have been on the Hill to lobby on agriculture issues.

Two officers escorted Prestage from the building in handcuffs around 9:35 a.m., and loaded him into a waiting police van. He did not respond to questions from CQ Roll Call.

Prestage was taken to Capitol Police headquarters for processing, according to department spokesman Shennell Antrobus.

The northeast Cannon door reopened around 9:50 a.m.

To be fair, the gun was not trying to get into the building on its own, was it?

  • mikem42

Where’s Cliven Bundy and the Open Carry Gang when you need them? I find it ironic that the congress wants to protect themselves from gun violence, but not the rest of us so much.

  • John Golding

Glad they have security at all of the entrances in these buildings and garages. Don’t they?

  • McAllister’s Wife

what a tool. Praying to the merciless Judeo-Christian Yahweh that this gentleman gets his 5 years. Or Yahweh destroys the planet to end this ridiculousness once and for all.

Having a CCW permit, it’s more likely the guy simply carried without a thought for the DC histrionics than with intent to harm.

Hopefully sanity will prevail and they’ll release Dr. Prestage without charges.

    • Johnathan Pertolick

Just because you have a CCW permit in South Carolina DOES NOT MEAN you are permitted to conceal carry in the entire Union.

Only a foolish gun owner conceals across state borders WITHOUT understanding the unique state and city laws he is entering into.

Concealed carry is a responsibility, and this man clearly failed on responsible gun ownership, which includes knowing where your gun is and where you are permitted to have it.

If you think you can conceal all across the country, feel free! But please do not whine when you are fairly arrested and tried for breaking laws!! As has been said for longer than America has existed: Ignorantia juris non excusat! “Ignorance to the law excuses no one!”

“Just because you have a CCW permit in South Carolina DOES NOT MEAN you are permitted to conceal carry in the entire Union.”

Thanks for the No-Sh*t-Sherlock moment. As for the rest of your rant, histrionics duly noted.

in Virginia, the Capitol building has an express line for CCW permit holders. You can sit and speak with your legislators while carrying concealed.

why does Congress not allow guns in their office buildings? the 2nd amendment shouldn’t stop at their doors. He was probably going to the Hot Dog Lunch

    • Rita__A

That;s all some can affords these days

  • Heather Moore

This isn’t entirely surprising. The man supports senseless violence to pigs, beings who feel pain and fear and joy and love just as people do. Every day, these sentient beings are cruelly killed in slaughterhouses across the nation. They don’t want to die any more than we do. One way to reduce the violence and bloodshed in this world is by opting for meatless meals

    • Alisa Mullins

They should have arrested him for cruelty to animals while they were at it.

      ^typical vegangelical organic fertilizer.

In other news- bacon is delicious. hurray for pork!

      • steph. h.

Dannielle, hurting those weaker and more vulnerable than you does not make you stronger.

      • yogachick

So embarrassed for you Dannielle, how stupid can you be? Enjoy your heart disease and cancer, who’s going to pay for your bypass surgery caused by your recklessness with your health?!

    • aliswell

Good grief, are you for real? Did you forget the /sarc at the end of your wackadoodle post?

  • Kylie Ludgate

Busted and disgusted! Serves him right. He clearly thinks he’s above Federal law and lacks a moral compass when it comes to animals. He was probably pushing an ag-gag bill so he can continue making a buck off viciously slaughtering pigs.

    • aliswell

Yeah, because all those politicians on Capitol Hill would NEVER think THEY’RE above the law.

Tell me where in the GOD GIVEN Constitution it says you have to have a permit at all! SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED! ARM EVERYONE!

  • Rita__A

Those farmers and ranchers are feeling emboldened and keep wanting more and more of the pie. That is what happens with Greedy People. I agree with Kylie, that Ag Gag Bill is horrible. It is a continuous fight for humane treatment.

  • tncem

Wow, the US(CP) Comestic Police can work at the TSA after they retire. I am so glad we pay them so much to be nothing more than x-ray machine operators.
