$8.3 Billion Spent on Campaigning — And You Think You Saw Every Ad

Presidential and congressional candidates, political parties and issue groups spent $8.3 billion on campaigning during 2011-2012, according to a new Federal Election Commission tabulation. Many people remember they were deluged with campaign advertising, but it is difficult to comprehend the enormity of the political education and persuasion marketplace. The new big-picture FEC totals help. The overall election cycle figures did not break records, but the consultants and media organizations buying and selling advertising time probably had a great 2012.
The presidential campaigns spent $1.4 billion. Congressional candidates spent $1.8 billion. Political party committees spent $1.6 billion. Political action committees spent $2.2 billion. Independent expenditure groups spent $1.3 billion.
