Former College President Indicted in Straw Donor Scheme

The desire to help raise funds for a candidate you support can bring pressure and complications, even for a former college president.

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced the Indictment of Dinesh D’Souza with violating federal campaign finance laws by making illegal contributions to a U.S. Senate candidate in the names of others and causing false statements to be made to the Federal Election Commission.

The Indictment alleges D’Souza directed others to make $20,000 in contributions to a Senate campaign committee, and then reimbursed the individuals. D’Souza and his wife are listed in federal campaign finance reports as giving $5,000 each, on March 16, 2012, to Wendy Long, R-N.Y., who lost to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. D’Souza had been head of King’s College in New York.
