Lobbyist Linked to Stock Surge Is Well Connected

Recent news reports about a surge in trading shares in health-care companies, prior to the government  announcement of a shift in policy, have highlighted lobbyist Mark Hayes of Greenberg Traurig LLP and his work on behalf of Humana. For the fourth quarter of 2012, Greenberg Traurig reported it was paid $10,000 by Humana for lobbying.

Hayes also is part of the Greenberg Traurig lobbying team for the following clients and amounts in the fourth quarter of 2012:  AON Hewitt $10,000; Business Roundtable $40,000; Cellerent Therapeutics Inc. $30,000; Coalition of Sleep Management Companies – less than $5,000; Community Health Systems Inc $10,000; Gentiva Health Services Inc.- less than $5,000; LifePoint Hospitals Inc. $10,000; National Association of Community Health Centers $10,000; National Community Pharmacists Association $30,000; Partnership for Quality Home Healthcare $30,000; Public Health Trust/Jackson Health Systems $20,000; Senior Whole Health – less than $5,000; U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform – less than $5,000; and Wellcare Health Plans Inc. – less than $5,000.

Prior to joining Greenberg Traurig as a lobbyist, Hayes was a Senate Finance Committee health care advisor to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). Current minority health policy advisors on the committee include Becky Shipp, a former advisor to Sen. Hatch (R-Utah); Kristin Welsh, who formerly was senior director for executive branch relations at the American Hospital Association. She also worked with the Health Insurance Association of America; Dan Todd, who formerly was senior director for health policy at EMD Serono, an affiliate of Merck. He was also director of Global Government Affairs at Amgen; Stephanie Carlton, who formerly was an advisor to Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.). Jay Khosla is the committee’s minority Policy Director. He formerly worked as an advisor to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), and Sen. Orin Hatch(R-Utah). Rodney Whitlock is minority Staff Director of the subcommittee on Health Care, and an advisor to Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa).
