Sugar Gives Energy to Lobbying on Farm Bill

The sugar industry dramatically increased its lobbying during the second quarter of 2013 as farm bills were working their way through Congress.
The American Sugar Alliance gave new energy to their lobbying by spending almost a million dollars during the last three months. The alliance reported it spent $990,000 as compared with $760,000 in the first quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2012 it spent $350,000, and in the third quarter it spent $670,000.
In the last 12 months, the American Sugar Alliance has spent $2,770,000 lobbying on the Senate and House farm bills; the administration and management of U.S. sugar policy; the Farm, Nutrition and Bioenergy Act of 2013; bilateral trade agreements that include access for sugar into the U.S. Market; NAFTA, U.S. Columbia FTA, U.S.-E.U. FTA, and Korea; World Trade Organization Doha Round and TransPacific Partnership Agreement.
Jack Roney is their lobbyist. The alliance also contracts for lobbying from Combest Sell & Associates LLC and North Bridge Communications Inc. Former Rep. Larry Combest, R-Texas, was the chairman of the House Agriculture Committee from 1999 to 2003. Tom Sell was the deputy chief of staff for the House Agriculture Committee, where he worked on the 2002 farm bill.
