Christie Meets With GOP Senators in Closed-Door Session

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is meeting with Senate Republican leaders in the Capitol, and though the topic of the meeting could not be confirmed, it’s likely they could discuss the current impasse over funding the government and extending the debt limit.

The GOP governor was spotted Wednesday with his entourage entering an office near Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s leadership suite. Christie has been a vocal opponent of the ongoing shutdown.

Entering the meeting, Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Roy Blunt of Missouri refused to comment on whether they invited Christie or the New Jersey governor invited himself.

McConnell was not seen entering the closed-door session, but his detail and a staffer were in the hall outside the meeting room.

UPDATE, 2:58 p.m.: A McConnell spokesman e-mailed to clarify the nature of Christie’s visit.

“He’s in town for Chiesa events and dropped by for a courtesy visit at [the governor's] request,” McConnell spokesman Michael Brumas said.
