McCaskill Sends Campaign Pitch for Farm Bill

Sen. Claire McCaskill is reaching out to her campaign mailing list to push for food stamp funding.

The Missouri Democrat’s asking campaign supporters to contact their local House members in support of a bipartisan farm bill without substantial cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

“The fumbling of House Republican leadership is hurting our farmers and ranchers, Missouri’s economic health, and those throughout the country who depend on food stamps for basic nutrition,” McCaskill said in an email sent Thursday.

The pitch comes with a link to an automated tool for sending a pre-written letter to the user’s House member.

McCaskill is by no means the only Senate Democrat talking about the farm bill during the August recess. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., held a news conference about the farm bill on Monday.

“The farm bill is a jobs bill. These programs help us sell our products in markets like Nigeria and Vietnam and research in the farm bill is key to sustaining our opportunities in these markets,” Cantwell said.

The House passed a farm bill before the August recess that doesn’t include the nutrition title that includes SNAP. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., plans to bring a food stamp bill to the House floor separate from the farm policy measure in September that would reduce the spending level by up to $40 billion over a decade, almost double the cuts in the first version of the House farm bill this year.

Senate Agriculture Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and House Agriculture Chairman Frank D. Lucas, R-Okla., have said they are trying to get as much work done as possible to build a compromise measure before a formal conference, which won’t convene until after the House acts on the nutrition title.

“If House leadership won’t lead, we need to build support among House members to pass this crucial legislation from the ground-up,” McCaskill added. “We need to speak up, and the voice your House representative cares about most is yours.”

Claire . . . How about you actually communicate with your constituents through town hall meetings? Are you even in Missouri over this five week recess? Could you explain to me what EXACTLY it was that “Monsanto’s MAN” (Republican Roy Blunt) snuck into the bill and why you agree with it? As a farmer, I would like to see the bill split into two separate items: A FARM BILL and A FOOD STAMPS BILL. You know . . . to encourage transparency. Thanks for reminding me to ONCE AGAIN, write my House Reps and ask that they vote NO on this bill.
