Trayvon Martin’s mother will be a featured witness at a Senate hearing on “stand your ground” laws next week.

Senate Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin made the announcement Thursday afternoon. The Illinois Democrat will preside over the hearing as chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights. He announced plans for the hearing back in July.

Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton is scheduled to testify along with Lucia McBath. Her son, Jordan Davis, was shot and killed last year in the parking lot of a gas station in Jacksonville, Fla.

Michael David Dunn has been charged with murder in that case. He pleaded not guilty; the trial has been delayed until 2014, according to local media reports. The case has parallels to the circumstances surrounding the death of Martin, in which George Zimmerman was acquitted of murder. Zimmerman and his legal team successfully argued that the shooting of Martin was a case of self-defense.

According to Durbin’s office other witnesses scheduled for the Sept. 17 Senate hearing are:

William Meggs, State Attorney, Second Judicial Circuit, Tallahassee, Fla.

Ronald Sullivan, Clinical Professor of Law, Director of the Criminal Justice Institute, Harvard Law School

John Lott, President, Crime Prevention Research Center

Ilya Shapiro, Senior Fellow, CATO Institute

Wow, and people mock Issa for calling some of the hearings that he does. Tell Durbin that playing dead only works with bears. It is sometimes necessary to respond with force when a person is beating you to death. That’s basic survival instinct.

I thought Putin pretty clearly exposed these type of made-up BS issues the admin keeps creating. I guess RollCall is still falling for it. Wearing a hoodie and being a punk is dangerous. Wow who’d a thunk?

Zimmerman was not acquitted under Stand Your Ground. This is clearly for show.

  • Forrest Waller

The Davis case is nothing like the Martin case. Dunn fired into a car full of teenagers in an argument over the volume of the music they were playing. Dunn faces a First Degree Murder charge and three charges of attempted murder.

I would love to ask her why she failed as a parent and could not control her punk thug son and had to send him to live with his drug addict daddy……maybe why he used such bad judgement as not to just walk away……why can’t people see this for what it is a thug that started a fight and lost his life because of it

  • Jungle Jim Miller

Will she be testifying about violence among inner-city youth and the lack of parenting that leads them down this path??

Federal government has no authority in regard to this issue. Also, as noted, Stand Your Ground was NOT involved in the Zimmerman case.
