No Action on Unemployment Extension as Senate Leaves Town

None of the long-shot scenarios for additional Senate action on an unemployment extension materialized before the Senate skipped town for another recess Thursday.

The Senate will not return until June 2 — more than five months after Congress allowed the benefits to expire. Democrats and President Barack Obama agreed to a budget deal that left the benefits on the cutting room floor shortly before they expired, and have been pushing unsuccessfully ever since to revive them.

House Republican leaders have no plans to take up the Senate-passed unemployment benefits extension and only a handful of them are calling for restoring the benefits. Obama has yet to make a personal appeal to Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, and is apparently uninterested in the type of hardball horse-trading (video) it would likely take to resurrect the issue.

Democrats, unions and administration officials such as Labor Secretary Thomas E. Perez continue to tweet their support for reviving the emergency unemployment benefits, and lawmakers occasionally make speeches on the House and Senate floors, but they have little leverage at this point over Boehner.

Still, Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., told CQ Roll Call earlier this week that he hasn’t given up, suggesting that a highway bill might be a possible target for an unemployment extension bill and noting that advocates are considering dropping retroactive benefits in a bid to get more Republican support.

It will likely be months before a highway bill will reach the president’s desk, even if Reed’s longshot bid succeeds. Other bills, like a tax cut bill now ensnared in a dispute over amendments, also aren’t moving quickly. And neither Democrats nor the president have demanded that unemployment be added to the bills that are moving quickly — like a bipartisan job training overhaul announced this week.

It’s part of a pattern going back to last year. In addition to the budget, Obama signed an omnibus spending bill, a farm bill, and is about to sign a water bill all without unemployment benefits attached.

In the meantime the number of long-term unemployed who have been cut off since the expiration of the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program is nearing 3 million.

I hope they all have a great holiday weekend filled with something aside from selling off the last of their belongings and packing up the rest for storage as they prepare their families for eviction. Thanks to all involved with the exception of Heller and Reed, the only two who seem to care enough to fight.

I guess you have to live in a foreign country to get any help from the US Senate and House. Didn’t they give Ukraine 40 Billion in aid? I know they wanted to. This bill which was paid for only cost half that. WTF?

I know that damn Boehner does not care about you unless you are rich. He don’t care about what anyone is going thru right now. I am on pins & needles already lost the place I lived when I lost my job due to Boehner’s stupid shutdown, now I am wondering how I am going to pay for my car & insurance & rent where I am staying. This is horrible & I know I am not alone. We need to find a way to get him impeached he is such a heartless jerk as long as he can oppose the democrats he will do it & hurt millions of people doing it. He is a creep.

I will never vote for a Democrat ever again…It would have been so much better if they just told everyone in November that they were ending the program rather then use the issue for political gain! Hopefully by November enough people begin to understand that if they wanted to pass a unemployment extension (after leaving it out of budget) theirs been several opportunities like the Republicans $900,000,000,000 farm bill,Doc fix,Omnibus etc. All were must pass legislation and did pass and they could have attached EUC to anyone of those. Also Obama is just as much to blame he signs every bill and easily could have demanded unemployment be extended first.

That’s what I’ve been saying this whole time! The Democrats want it as much as the Republicans. Hope they enjoy their vacations while we all end up on the street. I can’t believe they are all applauding the unemployment rate dropping. It’s dropping because companies have no one else they can let go! As well as, we are no longer counted on their statistics.

The unemployment rate is dropping because the 3 million people who were cut from EUC are no longer being tracked since states stopped EUC applications on Jan 2nd and nearly all states are no longer allowing those that were already on EUC to continue to file bi weekly claims…They gave no idea who found work and who’s still looking!

I could get to D.C but what good would it do…Maybe if back in December everyone knew what the Democrats were abruptly cutting them off enough people would have still had cars, insurance, gas etc to get their in mass numbers it may have worked but 5 months later most the unemployed don’t even have Internet to know what’s even going on…. They certainly are not gonna get any information from news media if they manage to make to their local Walmart and hang out in the electronics dept.

It’s not just the Democrats – it is both parties. They are playing games feeding their egos and bank accounts. Maybe if enough people just stop voting, and they see the small turn out for elections it might bring more attention to how upset everyone is with our congress…not just the unemployed.

Just the opposite we must vote! We must vote out all incumbents. We must vote for anyone that is not currently in office no matter what party (because the both suck). Perhaps that will send a message to the newly elected that if they screw us they will be out!! They really seem to love being in politics they would do anything to keep that cushy job so we could actually win. We have to vote EVERYONE out of office across the board!! That would certainly send a message that they could not ignore. Staying home and not voting gives you no voice at all. We need to band together. By 2016 when the major election comes around there ought to be 7 or 8 million effected by this. Maybe even more. I will be voting for the new guy no matter what with the exception of Dean Heller (I live in Nevada).

The extension was never going to happen. The unemployed were always being used as a political tool for both parties. Reid blocking amendments for four months, Rep senators bitching about everything being offered by Dems. Obama “urging” Congress to pass the bill. Boehner wanting his agenda satisfied. Boehner bowing to the steadfast wishes of the Tea Party assholes. Dems can now campaign for the rest of this year as to the ” heartless” Republican party who left 3 million behind. Republicans can campaign that Dems offered no amendments, no pay fors, wanting to spend and add more to the deficit. The republican party is bad for this country period! We have suffered through this and will continue to suffer through much more . We MUST vote them out of Washington! That is all we have left. The rest of the country is tired of hearing our cries, our bitching about the bad breaks we have received :through no fault of our own”. We have become a third world country in many respects, and this subject matter is one of the primary reasons why. God Bless us all. And may he see them for what they really are. Fascist pigs!

you know the entertainment industry does gives us glimpses of what is going on and that is because criminals need to tell about their crimes, it is truly amazing how many people are involved – it is truly staggering, just like the false flags of the gun shootings in the theaters and malls and schools – come on ! since when did all of this occur? They are lying, sorry but newtown did not happen and the media are all in on it and so many others gun control advocates. I am not a gun owner but i support gun ownership but the gov has gotten tricky by buying up the ammunition and shutting down the ammo manufacturers. Anyone that can analyze should start to understand that we are in big big big trouble. and i am still irritated that our elected officials knew 9 – 11 was a lie, in the making for decades, the towers were build to come down, the patriot act was signed off immediately. they all know they all know

And that doesn’t include people who have lost their job, and decided to not file for UC and just take some time off before call-back. I was laid off in October 13′, and knew some people from my dept that said they were not going to file for UC, and not look for work, figuring they would get called back to our company in a few months; 2 people even took early retirement at 60yo after no success in a job search after a few months.

please don’t blame the Democrats, it all boils down to Boehner & the Republicans always wanting to fight with the Democrats & the help they try to get for the American people. If it is not Boehners way it is no way at all, all he had to do was put it on the floor for a vote & the jerk won’t unless the Democrats bend to his will. I think he needs to be out of any kind of Government office & if people can’t see that then they are totally blind. I am now no longer receiving my Unemployment benefits & pounding the streets as far as 300 miles away from home for a job & still no luck. I have looked at home, then 100 miles from home & then 3oo milles. Jobs are not about what you know it is about who you know & the best of job bills will still not put people to work. Every job I have ever gotten in my life was by who I was friends with. I have a Bachelors degree & Certified in Office Administration & Management but still no luck. You are delusional. It is not Boehners fault. It is just that he does not care he is holding 3 million people hostage while he plays games. Even if job creation bills were included it would never be enough for him, it all boils down to Obamacare and Obama. Boehner hates him so much that he will not allow anything positive to happen that Obama might be able to take credit for. He is a sick man. I would love job creation bills however the way this government is it would take 5 or 6 years to phase it in.So what good will it do anyone right now?

Nothing will satisfy Boehner until Obama is out of office. He hates Obama so much that he will do nothing until Obama is gone. If Obama agreed to get rid of Obamacare he would give in but that will never happen. Boehner does not care about a job creation bill. Who does he think will be providing all these jobs? The corporations that just got those big tax cuts? With the amount of money they are saving don’t you think they could afford to hire a few more people? No they will put it in their pockets and the pockets of the politicians. Don’t kid yourself both sides share the blame for this mess but both blame the other. Disgraceful.

I find it very disrespectful for John Boehner to tell our country that:

“The President is gonna have to show us that we can trust him. ” and this next statement was even worst John Boehner stated:

” President Obama reduces the confidence of the people ”

John Boehner made these statements knowing that
3.5 MILLION UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS are depending on Obama to help his people. John Boehner wants the people to see that Obama is weak and lacks the skills to get anything done in congress which is consistent to what Donald Trump stated when he was deciding to run for President.

Boehner is not paid to care about Americans — he is only paid to care about the citizens in his district — and apparently, they like him there, as he is easily re-elected every two years (and will be again). But if this were truly as important to the Democrats as they claim, they would find a way to work something out. But hey, it’s an election year. The GOP doesn’t see that much urgency with the issue (and they are probably correct, as least electorally), and the Dems have the political wedge issue they want to hammer the GOP with.

Boehner’s salary is paid by the US Treasury, just like any other federal official. I have no idea who contributes to his political campaigns, but he certainly doesn’t need much from businesses, as his Congressional seat is perfectly safe and has been for well over 20 years.

Boehner is benefiting from gerrymandering which allowed the politicians to choose their voters. They have literally turned the notion of democracy upside down in order to ensure that they will remain in office. Removing them all is going to be more than a notion. It will take a strategical alliance amongst previous members of each party to locate and support competent candidates whose sole mission is to resurrect the country’s democracy.

No, Boehner lives in a place with a LOT of Republican voters. So actually, it would be more accurate to say that he is benefiting from Democrats not being able to gerrymander him out of his district. He was won over 60% of the vote for the past 24 or so years, so there is no evidence to support your contention — at least with regard to his individual seat.

Gerrymandering has existed since the very first Congressional maps were drawn, and according to some pretty sound studies, it only is only a secondary effect on the elections and would only account for a handful of seats. The Democrats much larger problem is geography — they are too concentrated in urban areas, and more natural district lines put them at a disadvantage.

Although it is not impossible, it is highly unlikely that the demographics of his district has not changed over 24 years. Yes, I am speaking in general and gerrymandering applies to both parties, at the same time is is highly unlikely that his district has not been modified to ensure that it has remained significantly republican. That is the whole intent of gerrymandering- to ensure that a district remains politically skewed. This article suggest however that Boehner actually and actively engaged in gerrymandering: http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/10/02/2718621/how-john-boehner-engineered-an-ohio-gerrymander-to-save-his-speakership/

I do not know the history of Boehner’s individual district, but I know where it is, and I used to live less then an hour away from his district for roughly 6 years during the mid-2000’s. It’s a very conservative part of the state that borders Indiana, and believe me, it would be VERY difficult to put him in a vulnerable position. If he lived in suburban Cleveland or Columbus, then it would be much easier to do.

For comparison, I currently live in the state of Washington, and the western third of the state votes like California, while anything more than 30 miles east of Seattle votes like Utah or Idaho. Now put Boehner in the Easternmost part of Washington and see if you can come up with a Congressional map that makes him vulnerable. Can it be done? Yes, but that map would be REALLY convoluted. To be effective, you would probably need to populate his district with people in Seattle — i.e., have a district that ran East-West across the entire state!

As to your other point, is the redistricting done on a partisan basis? Of course. And that is done by both parties EACH AND EVERY TIME one party controls a state legislature and the governorship. And I have no doubt whatsoever that Boehner has had some input in the process. But it is not primarily to save his bacon, but to maximize GOP seats in the state.

And if you actually look at an Ohio Congressional district map, the districts are NOT absurdly drawn — nothing like some of the districts in the South (GA and NC come to mind, which are drawn primarily to EXPLOIT the Voting Rights Act — and for that reason, the GOP absolutely loves the VRA in the South — that has allowed them to eliminate almost all white Democrats there).

I can appreciate your personal perspective. Thanks for sharing. If gerrymandering does not give a political party an advantage, then why is it done? I personally refrain from believing studies or statistic which defy common sense. Gerrymandering involves altering districts to favor political parties and since most candidates belong to a political party it is an anti-democratic tactic. We both agree that he benefits from representing a majority Republican district. Where we differ is that I do not agree that his district has not been influenced by the manipulation of gerrymandering. I also do not agree that his sole responsibility is to represent his district. He is the Speaker of the House which is a role that expands his responsibility. He is not simply determining legislation that affect his district. He, as illustrated here, has powers and responsibilities that go way beyond that of his district. He as the Speaker of the House holds the dubious distinction of being the first and only speaker who failed at extending UE when long-term unemployment has been this high. Although I recognize that the Democrats had a role in this, he is primarily responsible and deserves every bit of hatred directed towards him by over 3 million US citizens. He allowed politics to supersede the livelihood of people and history has taught us over and over again, that those who do that end up facing tragedy. I personally wish that I could say that I feel sorry for him, but I don’t and I suspect that neither will his fate.

Please read what I said a little more carefully. I never asserted that gerrymandering does not give a political party advantage — in fact, that what ALL gerrymandering is about, and both parties do it equally well! The Democrats are particularly grumpy about this issue because they did so badly in the 2010 elections (when it mattered!), which enabled the GOP to gerrymander more states than they normally would have been able to do (such as PA and NC). But the Democrats still crushed the GOP in gerrymandering AZ, CA, and IL, for example.

But as I said, this has been going on for two centuries, and it isn’t a lot different now, except that both parties use sophisticated software in an attempt to maximize electoral gains or minimize losses.

Boehner’s district has certainly been affected by gerrymandering, but not in any serious way — because there is no need to. The boundaries have certainly changed a little because they have to — the same number of citizens allocated to each district, and that changes big-time. But since he already has a safe GOP district (won over 60% of the vote for about 12 straight elections), most of the gerrymandering that has occurred in his district has been to preserve what he already has.

With respect to Boehner and the UE, that is, of course, an entirely different issue, about which I have mixed feelings. Yes, it is difficult to witness people struggling, but this the nature of a Republic. In general, we have a fundamental disagreement in this country about the proper role of the federal government (which we fight about in every election), and this issue makes it real. UC was never intended to last more than a year, and in tough economic times, the federal government has decided to extend it. But that extension is not an entitlement either. Personally, I wish these issues were handled better at the state and local levels, where it would be even more real, as opposed to a faceless bureaucracy. Local assistance is more personal, and when that happens, the giver (taxpayer) does not feel as resentful because it is easier to see the results of giving, and the receiver feels more thankful and less entitled. But alas, that is not the system we live in, and we seem to be at the mercy of the politicians, and their lack of cooperation and compromise does not reflect well on either party.

They owe me what I have paid in! Why have unemployment “insurance” if you can’t use it? I’ll tell you why…we have no choice. It is taken out of our hard earned income because our government says so. So for a person like myself who has worked for 30 years and never drawn unemployment I’d say they owe me what I have paid. Its people like you who criticize those of us in need that will get your due someday…maybe not anytime soon, but someday you will need help and no one will be there for you. If your life is so perfect why are you wasting your time on here? Go spend some money idiot.

boy do you ever have a low opinion of others that are in a bad spot in life, if you don’t have nothing nice to say don’t say nothing at all. What does the bible say “If you are with out sin, cast the 1st stone” well you must be with out sin if you are going to be so freaking self righteous & say mean things to people that are facing so much hardship.

Still blaming Bush, eh? Obama has had his policies in place for quite some time now. One aspect of it is called “quantitative easing”. The federal reserve simply prints more and more money (18 trillion, last I heard), which goes mostly to rich bankers in Wall Street. Talk about trickle-down not working!

          • BC Shelby

…agreed, we’re basically living on both borrowed assets and time.

This “artificial infusion” of cash only allows the banks to buy off bad bonds and mortgages, removing them from their ledgers, while doing nothing to get at the root of what is hurting our economy. In effect the Fed is “running up the credit card” with nothing in the account to back it up. So, for Wall Street investors it’s “happy days are here again”, but for the average wage earner and job seeker, the economy is still, as one article I read describes it, “tepid” at best.

Printing money with nothing to back it up is a house of cards just waiting to collapse. When it does it will make the “great recession” seem like a minor economic speed bump.

Bingo—yup everything goes to banks & finance companies in the end. We live our life so they can get rich off of us. I have been saying this for years. I blame Bush, his dad was okay as a President but I think he was an idiot, the guy couldn’t even read. but besides the point you have the point straight about where all the money is going.

Bush may have been a mediocre President, but he is a lot more intelligent that you are giving him credit for, and you will probably not find anyone who has worked with him who would say that he was unintelligent. I think his political schtick was to try to come across as a down-to-earth guy (probably in part to make up for what he viewed as the reason for his father’s failure to win re-election), which can be viewed by some in the way that you have alleged.

you are so right about the Republicans gutting the economy of the Country. They will not stop either if given half a chance. It is always about what they want & what benefits them not what benefits the everyday people. Myself I think that a person should not be elected for speaker of the house if he is as sick as John Boehner. I think that from here on out that the people selected for Congress should have to go through psychological evaluations. He is so cold hearted. He is so Power hungry & controlling that it is scary & he has this much control over the U.S.

          • mabramso

Bush certainly deserves his share of the blame for a bad economy at the time he left office, but the GOP did not gut the economy. Heck, we had a great economy for 6 of Bush’s 8 years. We have recessions every 7-8 years no matter who is in office, and that’s life. The economy was just as bad when Reagan took office in 1980, and by 1984, the economy was booming. And Reagan had to deal with a pretty hostile Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, just like Obama has now with the GOP. Sure, the sides are now more polarized — Reagan was more compromising than Obama is now, and the Democrat House in the early 1980s was more compromising than the current House.

I don’t think much of Boehner as a leader, but sick and cold-hearted? I don’t see it — at least no more so than any other politicians. And power-hungry? To what end? He has already achieved as high of an office as he ever will (and he knows this), he will never run for higher office, and he is completely secure in his re-election. So at this point, for him, it is about trying to get policies passed that he believes in, or preventing things from being passed that he doesn’t believe in, and because of the polarization, there is a stalemate.

When I tell my story to people that don’t know what’s going on none of them can believe it. They look at me like I’m crazy. I guess when I had a job I didn’t care either as long as I had a check coming in. The American people need to know what’s going on in this country. It’s a shame that they are just clueless. I try to make myself believe that both parties are to blame but it don’t work…Reason is if the Democrats want to extend unemployment and Boehner is saying OK just attach it to 1 of the 45 jobs bills under Reids desk! Then why not just attach it to 1? After Senate Democrats refused to attach it to a jobs bill Boehner turned his attention to Obama and stated since the Senate won’t do it then the white house needs to list what jobs bills would be acceptable to them for the house to attach to the unemployment extension? No answer from Obama other then he’s not willing to compromise on extending unemployment. … Also don’t forget Boehner left the option open for Obama to offer his own jobs bill if he didn’t like any of the 45 house passed bills.

He has stated since December that even tho the Democrats left unemployment out of the budget that he would still be willing to extend it just providing it’s paid for and the Senate will allow vote on 1 of the 45 house passed jobs bills sitting under Harry Reid desk….I don’t see that as unreasonable if you do please I’d live to hear why?

It’s the Dems that caused all this and want you to believe that “One” person is to blame for this problem. They new in November of last year they had no intention of passing this. They spread lies and constantly change what they say whenever they lose. You can’t honestly believe that “One” Person has that much power?

Obama has NOT done anything that a president has power to do. Why has he not called Boehner and talked with him to work this out? It is his job as President. Boehner has not lied about what he wants. He has said the same thing from day one. The Dems knew this and yet they still did NOTHING to get this moved. On Monday, Harry Reid blocked them even trying to add EUC to any of the tax bills. How is it Boehner’s fault? And if the House sends bills to the Senate to pass, why aren’t they attaching EUC to them?

          • Laly

OK…what I’m saying is – as of the vote that passed the senate, who’s hands is it in now? Who is refusing to budge? Of course it’s not solely his fault. They’re all smarmy liars. But as of 4/7 after it cleared the senate, it’s been up to Boehner to bring it to the table, and he won’t. Refuses. Not without ‘job-creation provisions’. But here’s the thing – why does it need to include that provision? I mean, I don’t see him coming up with ideas for job creation ;) NOBODY is. Passing EUC would spur the economy on that alone, thus the need for more jobs. Sorry, but he is like a pouting kindergartner.

lol about Boehner pouting like a kindergartner.

I used to feel the same way as you. Why doesn’t he just pass it? They have a lot of Job Creation Bills in the Senate and Harry Reid won’t even bring them to a vote. They wanted to attach it to the last tax cut bill but wasn’t allowed any amendments by Harry Reid. Harry passed the bill on 4/7 knowing that it would not come to a vote because it didn’t include what Boehner asked for.

At first I just was disgusted that “One” man could stop me from feeding my family and paying my bills. But the more I investigate this the more I see who really has let us down. The Dems used this knowing it would make Boehner look bad. They wanted votes to win more seats. They hoped they could make Republicans look like the bad guys. But the more you find out the more you realize who really is to blame and Obama doesn’t want this to pass at all. He used us in a punch line at a dinner he held two weeks ago. He thought it was funny.

I’m very disgusted and really can’t believe that these are the people that we (all Americans) voted into office to work for us.

Who’s to say that Boehner would allow a vote if the Senate did attached a bill. He specified that he wanted a job bill before he would allow a vote and he got one today. There are several bill in the house on EUI that he can choose from, but no vote has been scheduled and probably won’t be scheduled. When calls were placed to his office, his aides stated that the bill that was passed is not the bill that he wants. He never had the intention of bringing EUI up for a vote. The Senate has been trying for months, but the Republicans filibuster delayed their attempts until a month ago.

They passed it at the end of the day….The Senate passed bill has no chance since the extension ends in a week and Retroactive is impossible since states have no idea who went back to work and how is still unemployed and eligible for benefits….If anything their going to have to find another bill but let’s not forget Republicans only hold the majority in the house and you want them to create a bill to extend unemployment when the Democrats are 100% against extending the program and Obama definitely don’t want UC extended since that would take the unemployment rate back up about 7% …..I think the Democrats believe that the drastic drop in the unemployment rate is what’s going to win them the Senate this November.

Hard enough to even get the time of day from an prospective employer when you’ve been unemployed as long and are too old in their eyes to hire. Once on the street, it becomes a thousand fold more difficult as you don’t have the resources for maintaining your work search, a means of contact, a means of getting around, and a means to take care of yourself.

….and there is a growing trend in cities today to make homelessness illegal meaning jail time or being sent to a camp.

I agree with you and we need to unite in our efforts as I have post the following many times. As the saying goes: United We Stand – Divided We Fall and so far over the last five months we have been divided. It is time for the people to unite as we have the right to defend our country from both foreign and domestic enemies and both the senate and congress as you have just found out are enemies of the people….

I see alot of people saying to call Boehner’, call Reed and tell them to extend the unemployment package. Do you really think you can pressure them by doing this? No! You Can’t!

If you want to pressure them you have to contact the senators and congress people within the state you live in!

If you try to pressure senators and congress people in states you do not live in, they will just laugh at you and call you childish and continue to do what they are doing.

You have to pressure the senators and congress people within the states you live in. That’s when they start to worry because they know you can either vote them in or vote them out.

Boehner’ is from Ohio and could care less what you have to say unless you are from Ohio. I hope this makes sense to all of you. Boehner’ pretty much tells the President and secretary of labor where to go because he knows you can’t pressure him into anything when you write, email, or phone his office and you live out of his state.

You have to pressure the senators and congress people within you own state to put pressure on him. If you do this, he will listen as the senators and congress people within your state will listen to you.

So call, email, write, post on the sites for the senators and congress people within the state you live in and they Will Put Pressure On Boehner’ and Reed as they will then know that you know how to make politics work for you and will want to keep their cushy jobs!

If you do this this week, next week Boehner, Reid, Republicans and Democrats will then know that you know how to play the game and maybe he’ll do the right thing. But you have to play by their rules and use your time contacting the politicians within the state that you live in.

And the politicians should be in your state doing their jobs. And make sure their phone lines are to busy so they can not receive what they believe are important calls including their cell phones.

I will not forget this. I promise you. How could anyone call him/herself a Christian and do this to people? What on earth do they think people are paying their bills with while they play politics? Scumbags. None of them are trying. The Dems are pretending to try, while highlighting the deliberate cruelty of the Republicans. I’ve never seen an issue that so effectively peels back the layers of P.R. and exposes both sides for the hypocritical partisan scumbags that they are.

Obama, Boehner, Reid are the culprits for letting this expire imo. Probably the biggest mistake in the last 10 years there will be riots over this. They are up to something besides partisan politics. But if the media covered this the benefits would have been renewed a long time ago. If America knew what was happening to 4 million people there is no way they would stand for it. This story has to get on radio and television these blogs are too easy for politicians to ignore.

Yeah but theirs always a chance Obama finds that phone he always talks about and finally calls Boehner and tells him what job bills the white house will allow him to attach to a unemployment extension. At least then a bill to extend unemployment would be sitting on top the pile under Reids desk for when the Senate returns.

…however, it will be too little too late. The current bipartisan bill expires at the end of this month before the Senate will reconvene in June. It has been mentioned by several sources that any new UI which is bill advanced will most likely not include a retroactive provision, so over 3 million of us will be left with nothing for all these months of waiting.

The Senate passed bill is done they won’t be passing that since it expires in a week…Their are other unemployment extensions in the house that they could consider if I was to guess witch one it would be H.R 3885 from Republican Rep Charles Dent witch would only extend Tier 1 For 1 year….Not sure if it would be retro but probably not at this point since states stopped tracking the unemployed months ago. Nobody would be happy with H.R 3885 But they also need to realize that regardless of with one is passed only tier 1 would be in effect anyway since tier 2 is cut when your states UC rate drops below 6%

          • BC Shelby

            May 25, 2014
            4:22 a.m.

…In my state it is still 6.9% which would allow for Tier 2 benefits. In January and February, it was 7.0%. I was shorted benefits from Tier 1 when the programme was allowed to expire at the end of last year. Tier 2 (retro) would take me exactly until the end of my original UI claim I filed back in 2013. That would be enough to get back on my feet and buy several months time as well as get a new phone, keep my internet going, and keep from being evicted.

I have been continuing to submit my weekly reports (on advice from an officer in our employment department) so they have all the data they need concerning my work search well past the expiration of my original claim.

Now if they let it continue to drag this on after returning in June, yeah then the rate could drop below the minimum which would be a dastardly thing for them to do. Of course, being politicians more focused in keeping their seats in an election year rather than doing the job their paid to do, I wouldn’t put it past them.

The lie that Democrats prevented unemployment insurance from being extended is just that a lie.

Paul Ryan prevented an unemployment insurance extension from being added to the budget. Republicans in the Senate whittled the 12month extension Democrats proposed down to 5months after repeated attempts to tack on Keystone XL.

John Boehner prevented the Senate bill passed in April from coming to a vote in the house.

Remember that Republicans did this and they hate the middle class. Google “starve the beast and you’ll see how much they hate the middle.class.

Their is hundreds of articles if not thousands that all say the same thing! Are you gonna say next the Ryan cast the vote for every Democrat too? It is a fact that Democrats ended EUC as Senator Schumer stated it was part of the mid term strategy! It’s time you face reality if the Democrats or Obama wanted to extend unemployment even after the budget deal they would have attached it to the Farm bill,Doc fix,Omnibus etc…All those were must pass and guess what they did pass without mention of EUC and the President signed them all with his pen….He still hasn’t found his phone he talks about but who knows maybe he will buy a new one and call Boehner then….Let’s patiently wait and see.

Republicans wasted untold amounts of money voting to repeal the ACA not Democrats.
Republicans are wasting time and money holding Benghazi investigations for no reason not Democrats.

Republicans want to “starve the beast” not Democrats.

I just hate how they act like they care, they don’t. Obama would have stepped in, Reid could have negotiated with them, Boehner could put it up for a vote (but it might hurt them in the elections if they vote no). They seem to figure out how to work through things like the Doc fix. Be real, tell us it isn’t going to happen and start working harder on job creation, but don’t use this as a election vehicle – GOP doesn’t care about us, nor my own party. Give a tax break (they love to do that to large corporations) to hire the long term unemployed and people over 50. If you don’t want to keep EI going, at least work towards getting people back to work. We aren’t stupid nor lazy. We are hard working, intelligent people who are getting left behind.

I feel so disheartened by this. I feel naive, really, because I didn’t think my country would turn its back on me. I’ve paid pretty big dollars into the system over the years, had a good job– worked at least 60 hours a week ( salary), but got downsized with a lot of other people. I thought that if my turn came for tough times, my country would be there for me. I thought it was just common sense, it takes an average of 37 weeks to find a new job. I received 26 weeks of unemployment, then one week of EUC– and then Nothing right after Christmas! It’s not like after being unemployed for 26 weeks I had any savings left. It’s been a rude awakening– and one I’ll never forget, or forgive.

I know we all can’t afford to fly to DC and protest on the front stairs, but what we can do is in every state we live in protest on every corner you can find, the media will get involved and the unemployed people will make a stand. 3.5 million people standing on corners protesting has to wake someone up. So sorry to hear about your friend. Prayers to you and her other friends and family. I’m afraid that as time goes on there will be more people committing suicide and acting out of their true character. I can’t say I haven’t thought about suicide but I instantly reject those thoughts. I know that at some point things has to get better. We just have to keep our faith in God and not man.

Just yesterday I read a post from a young man who works at Bank of America, I think, he commented that his ex-coworker had just taken her life the night before due to these circumstances with the UI Benefits.

Until June 2nd!! This is low, thank goodness these men and women are rich and don’t have to deal with “real” people. Ha Ha. The speaker of the house acts like a high school bully. People with authority equal or greater than his, have tried to reason with him, talk with him, accept him and he says nothing to us and NO to them. In the “real” world I would say that man has a hidden agenda or a huge personal problem. I am sorry his life was threaten, but we are hearing about suicide among our ranks, individuals too overwhelmed and giving up their lives. This is Horrible! I received 26 weeks during the holidays and now its horrible, having to ask people for financial help. I have went through my savings and 401K. I have two degrees and very trainable for employment positions. I am disgusted with the way media is writing these articles, one article on Inquistors stated that employers are looking for people they can train and employers can not locate this work force. Ha Ha, really! Whether I get a job tomorrow or never, I will stay active in being an American, I am done with giving away America and having Americans not come first. Who comes first at home your family! Who comes first in America, Americans!

Thanks Obama!! You really know how to talk good, but when the going gets tough, you run and hide. Here was your chance to help the millions who depended on you and your party to get this extension passed, but you gave up, and now you pretend that we don’t exist. We were suckers to re-elect you, you good for nothing academic elitist! You have no balls, and you know it. Harry Reid is equally incompetent, and just plain stupid, but that’s the nature of your party. Repubs come out and say they hate us, but the Dems pretend to like the American worker, then do nothing to help when help is needed!! Both parties in Congress don’t care about the jobless, they only use the issue to get votes. I’ll never vote for Dem’s again, or THE REPUBS. ONLY THIRD PARTY CANDIDATES FOR NOW ON.

Wonder if it were 3 million illegal aliens that were out of work would the extension pass….probably would
We now know this week that illegal aliens get better health care than our AMERICAN VETERANS

It’s a shame that Boehner, Pelosi, Reid and the President had a photo op over lunch this week. They showed no consideration to those unemployed and now homeless Americans with no income who are starving for one of those sandwiches.

Rollcall is exactly right. Obama and Democrats could have done so much more to push unemployment insurance through. They have not played hardball with Republicans on this issues. Meanwhile, millions of unemployed are sliding into poverty, getting evicted, losing homes, using up savings & retirement and despairing as their lives are decimated. They now lack money to job hunt.

The GOP is clearly to blame for blocking this legislation and the suffering of millions. But the Democrats haven’t done nearly enough to help. Democrats will accept this failure and embrace it to campaign with against the GOP. Shame on both parties for their failure to help millions of unemployed Americans who just want help to get on their feet, get new jobs and rebuild their lives.

There is a ton of data showing these unemployed face huge obstacles to getting jobs and they badly needed this lifeline.

…were I not poor. I would have put my name in on our state’s ballot for Representative as an independent. Trouble is simply having conviction, compassion, and a desire you help your fellow citizens doesn’t cut it anymore, it’s become nothing more than another money game these days.

Of the 3.5 million unemployed Americans who have been looking for work for longer than 27 weeks, one in ten are veterans. It is especially disheartening to see the Republican-controlled House of Representatives continue to oppose legislation that would provide unemployment relief to our military heroes who have served and sacrificed for our State and Nation.

Well, I partly blame Harry Reid, and Patty murray for this mess, they didn’t get it in the budget negotiations between, her, and Paul Ryan in december, harry Reid said in a press conference, he was going to put through a bill on the 3rd of january,( after they expired)and that the republicans would extend the unemployment, and it wouldn’t cost them anything,as soon as he said that I knew it wasn’t going to happen, and shame on him, and patty Murray for thinking, and telling the american public that it would be.

Why criticize legislators (both parties) for maintaining a decision that this generation already made? People agreed when Bill Clinton declared that any aid provided must be strictly time-limited, serving as “an incentive to…find jobs.” We didn’t end welfare aid because it was no longer needed, or because because we couldn’t afford it: We ended it for the principle of it, saving us from developing a culture of dependency. To be without such basics as food and shelter has been the American norm for an entire segment of the population since 1996, and Americans have been fine with that. We have to live with the socioeconomic choices we made before we knew that those choices would personally effect us.

I am in dire need of numbers, people and voices. Our so called government has given up on us. We need to be heard. We have to tell them that we do not agree with how things in our government are being handled without concern for us AMERICANS! They have been there far too long and have lost touch with the average AMERICAN!
I ask that you stand with me on my fight for the Long Term Unemployed, the underemployed, and the 99er’s. Please contact your state Representatives and tell them that it is just plain wrong to let AMERICAN people starve, loose cars, loose their home’s and to loose EVERYTHING they have worked so hard for their whole lives. People can’t feed their kids let alone themselves. They are living in cars, shelters and camping on friends/families couches. Loosing their children because they can’t care for them anymore…

Nothing has changed. Bill Clinton ended welfare aid, declaring that “there is NO excuse” for long-term unemployment, and the public agreed. He stated that any aid provided must be strictly time-limited, to serve as an incentive to “get up every morning and find a job.” The public applauded. What an insult to think that America’s working families require more help than our most disadvantaged/least employable! Right?

According to DHS, as of 2011, eight million illegal immigrants, including visa overstays, were working in, non-agriculture, American jobs, by using false, or stolen SS numbers. Only 7% of the over 7 million employers are presently using E-Verify. E-Verify has a 99.71% accuracy rate (per Congressional testimony) … only 0. 043% of employers (3,000) were audited for I-9 compliance in 2012. Using SS mismatches, DHS knows where these illegal immigrants are working. With each passing day, more illegal immigrants are on the way, taking our work. It’s time to begin enforcing our existing Federal laws against illegal immigration.

You don’t count, you don’t count, you don’t count. That is what has been determined by the Republican party, the Democratic Party and this Administration. The fact that the democrats decided to sacrifice you for the benefit of obtaining a political talking point is evidenced by them not including this in the budget bill. The fact that the republicans keep coming up with inexcusable reasons often based upon lies demonstrates that we don’t count in their camp either. They lied and had the audacity to submit the Keystone bill as a jobs bill knowing very well that it was not. They sought to undermine Obamacare by using you as leverage. This Administration’s “Neo” stance falls extremely short of what this country needed. This country needed leadership that did not need polls in order to fight for the people. It needed someone with the courage to stand on what is right for the people and it needed someone who could get something accomplished for the people. Obama is too much like Bush who is too much like Clinton who is too much like Bush who is too much like Reagan who too favored policies establishing that you do not count. If this is truly a democracy, then a 4 year congress cleaning is needed. This year, the Republicans and in 2016, the Democrats. The focus of this country must return back to the best interest of its citizens who breath air and if it is to happen it must depend upon you. You can’t totally disregard a group of people the size of North and South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana and expect that there will not be retribution sought. We are talking 3-plus million people folks who are now experiencing something that no one ever experienced in this country as congress has never failed to pass an extension when long-term unemployment has been as high. This is what we must hit the media with daily.

.You have to look at this situation with a cryptic smile on your face. The simple fact that we paid into this system for years an amount far more than the up to 99 weeks they are bitching about. They are acting like the worse insurance company ever. You pay and they hope that you never collect, but when it becomes necessary, they want to offer up excuses why not. If I don get the pleasure of working again I’ going to see what I can do that this never gets deducted from my paycheck again. In addition to regular job hunting, I am also looking on the black market. I’m desperate at this point. if it gets worse, if something illegal surfaces, I may have to consider it. Bills have to be paid. Unlike the government, they are always there. Everyone has a point when they revert to survival mode. Our “reps ae either on vacation or “lecturing ” their constituents. I feel for your situation and want the extension badly. But I have to point out that we did not pay into the system. Unemployment insurance is paid by the employer and EUC is not insurance at all, it’s Emergency Unemployment Compensation. One can argue that we pay our government with our taxes so they should listen to us on how they spend it. Very true. But there’s no actual unemployment insurance tax coming out of anyone’s paychecks.

First time in decades? It was instated in 2008 as a reaction to a tumbling economy and skyhigh unemployment rate. Regular state UI still exists as always if you’re not taking advantage of it. It’s the additional weeks that unfortunately aren’t happening. I mention that only because I know some people don’t file at all and this news may confuse them.

Please don’t misinterpret my corrections though – I agree the EUC is needed and that the economy still qualifies as an emergency situation. I just find it important that people fight while armed with the right info.

In his December 14, 2002 weekly radio address, President George W. Bush reminded Congress that “no final bill was sent to me extending unemployment benefits for about 750,000 Americans whose benefits will expire on December 28th.”

He went on, “These Americans rely on their unemployment benefits to pay for the mortgage or rent, food, and other critical bills. They need our assistance in these difficult times, and we cannot let them down.”

What was the unemployment rate in December 2002?

It had just risen to 6.0 percent.

The unemployment rate today is 7.0 percent and at the end of this year 1.3 million Americans — including 20,000 veterans — who have been out of work for more than six months will have their unemployment insurance benefits cut off. Republicans in Congress have refused to extend these benefits, though the Congressional Budget Office predicts failing to do so will cost the economy 200,000 jobs.

The Republican Congress heeded George W. Bush’s call to extend unemployment insurance as they had the March before. They passed a bill and he signed it.

In 2003, the American economy was still dealing with the residue of the dot-com bust and economic shock of the 9/11 attacks — but it was still considerably stronger than the America that lived through the Great Recession and continues to see its growth hindered by government austerity.

The extended unemployment benefits Congress is about to let expire actually began under George W. Bush, long after his 2003 extension expired as unemployment dipped below 5 percent again. In 2008, as the financial crisis began to rock the economy, President Bush signed an extension of 13 weeks, 39 weeks total in most states, for anyone living in a state with unemployment over 6.0 percent. He also signed unemployment extensions that specifically helped the victims of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina.

All five times Bush extended unemployment benefits, he did so with the majority of Republicans in Congress supporting him.

At the peak of the crisis, when unemployment was around 10 percent, Congress and President Obama extended benefits to 99 weeks. The current maximum is 73 weeks.

But it’s not a permanent fixture. It’s been utilized on and off since 1957, actually. The problem is Republicans argue the the Economy has recovered enough to end it again when it really hasn’t. It’s also never been in effect this long.

I welcome the upcoming elections and pray people using their brains replace each and every on of these parasites of our political structure. After they loose their political royal family lifestyle I can only hope they hit the wall, loose unemployment after 26 weeks and stand on a street corner with a spray bottle of dirty water and a rusty squeeze and try to survive as they expect the several million of us with our family members I wish them all a MERS filled existence for what remains of their earthly lives.

Its funny how after 5 months of Republican obstruction, repeated Republican attempts to force us to accept the dirty and dangerous Keystone XL pipeline, repeated Republican attempts to add ACA killing amendments. And the continued obstruction of John Boehner preventing the extension bill that the Senate finally passed from coming to a vote in the House.

After all that now Republicans and their supporters are now trying to turn it around and place this failure at the feet of Democrats?

Trying to blame this on Democrats because they didn’t try hard enough? Lol
Well Republicans didn’t try at all and in fact actively took step to block any progress.

Lol The Republican party are certainly masters of deceit and misinformation that’s for sure.

Whenever Congress wants to get a bill passed they always do! Sometimes it takes a little negotiating or a compromise but the bill will always be passed…A good example is the $900,000,000,000 Farm bill it required a lot of debate and Republicans really had to give the Democrats a lot of what they didn’t want to but it got passed….

When Congress is using a issue for political gain you will hear all the same excuses you been hearing with the unemployment extension! Suddenly the President will act powerless and say very little about the issue ….Media will avoid discussing the issue since the information they receive would be inaccurate

    I was reading this article:
Senate passed the unemployment relief bill early last month, but the measure has been stalled in the House after Boehner raised questions about whether the proposal – which would pay benefits retroactively from when they expired in late December — could be implemented. Boehner also has said the bill needs to be attached to job creating provisions. Republicans in both chambers have complained that their policy ideas to kick start the economy are not considered in the Democratic-run Senate”
Can we the “unemployed” call the shots and come up with a proposal-creating jobs and keeping our pay benefits retroactively. Any suggestions?

Neither party truly cares for the American people. The Democrats could have avoided this whole crisis before it happened way back in December by not letting the unemployment extension expire in the first place. I’m sure they had an evil plan back then to make the Republicans look bad and score more votes for this November. For that, I no longer have much faith in my party. As for the scum bag John Boehner and his gang of rich thugs (Oh yeah, I better not say that or I may be arrested), they have absolutely NO interest in any kind of job training or creation additions to this bill. They are just pissed that Obama Care was passed and that Harry Reid sits on their bills in the Senate. It’s all just a big, back and forth, childish game that the unemployed are forced to pay for. Congress already has jobs for us – cleaning their homes and serving their food. I gave up on trying to be hired and became self-employed, but so far, make less than minimum wage. Here in Ohio, I will not be voting for any existing members. I hope they all enjoy their backyard barbecues this weekend while many of their fellow Americans are evicted and visiting food banks.

Who would arrest you for calling Boehner and company rich thugs? Obama controls the executive branch, not the GOP. All the GOP can do is pass legislation in the House that will never become law or sit on Democrat legislation that will never become law either. You would actually have a higher likelihood of being audited by the IRS for badmouthing Democrats, as that is the administration’s current modus operandi. :-)

If anyone is to be blamed, we have to look at the Dem leadership unfortunately. They didn’t include EUC in the bipartisan budget bill, which was the first tip to us that this was not important. They seem to bank on Republicans taking the blame in November but must people aren’t going to connect the dots in November, they are just going to blame “Congress” and voter turn-out will be sadly low.

Anyway, it isn’t going to help people who need EUC now.

In the end, people who aren’t directly affected or really interested in this bill passing aren’t really hearing about it from the press either, so they don’t care.

So when they return from their vacation (eye roll) we will hear talk of a renewal of the EUC program, not retroactive benefits.

All the House Republicans are as much to blame at this point as Boehner. Not one of them signed the discharge petition to bypass Boehner and bring this issue to a vote – 25 House Republicans needed to sign this to reach the majority of 218 signatures needed as all 193 House Democrats signed it.

Republicans are entirely to blame for this mess.

    • Mark Mays

Nah. This time, Dem leadership messed up, if we assume they were serious about EUC in the first place. Expecting Boehner to cave because you hold a few press conferences is not a good strategy. They didn’t want EUC in the one serious piece of legislation that passed, so this is what happened.

Democrats have been fighting Republican obstruction and inaction for months. Shutdowns and fillibuster that’s all the Republicans have had to offer. So the choice was a budget or a huge abstract fight and potential default. Democrats chose a budget and progress.

Nah. This time as in each time in the recent past Republicans have adopted a strategy that aims to forcibly shrink the size and scope of the federal government.
Republicans don’t care who is hurt by adopting this strategy as long as they “starve the beast”.

        • Mark Mays

There was never going to be a default. Ever. GOP learned their lesson from Newt. Tea Baggers may have wanted it but the leadership was never going to let that happen. There wasn’t going to be a fight over EUC buried in a bipartisan bill everyone wanted to pass. Boehner whining about fiscal responsibility if the extension was introduced separately was surely going to happen, though, because of the midterms. It isn’t that the leadership didn’t want to chance default, they were simply afraid of another public fail after the ACA.

I appreciate you and the Nemesis4Life for taking the initiative to do this for us, the 3.5 million and counting unemployed victims. I say victims because I am certainly feeling victimized by the Government. Not only that they have bullied us by calling us lazy and has constantly teased us with having us think that they were going to help us.

It comes a time when everyone has to stand up for themselves. We have to be responsible for our own futures as much as we can. We have to support one another as much as we can. In the past couple of days 2 people have posted that their friends had committed suicide. One yesterday and another today. It’s such a shame that people are to the point of feeling hopeless and having no way out of this mess.

Anyway, I just want to say thanks. I appreciate you!

Obama is a fake. He is useless and only cares about his agenda which is destroy America. It is beyond belief that he was elected the first time let alone the second time. Now, what is the difference between the idiot Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell? And what is the difference between Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner? The average American is left behind because none of these assholes care about us in the least. It’s not a Republican versus Democrat thing anymore. Neither of them care, WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!! Don’t listen to your union, your neighbor, your preacher or anyone else. Use your own head and decide what is wrong. We are being lied to without constantly. Demand accountability from all of those we send to serve us. Don’t let them destroy this country for there own causes.

First off let me state that I’m tired of the pissing contest between both parties. Folks wanna blame Obama for the job market and economy, but everything he tries to put into motion, the Repubs shut it down. It’s almost to the point of blatant disrepect. That being said, Obama’s not innocent either. What this president shows is a lack of backbone because he has been shot down so much that he just takes it now. Show some effing outrage Mr. President. Good working people have hit rock bottom. We had faith that the bill would be passed and we could get a little breathing room. I’m one of the lucky ones that got called back to work, only because someone else was fired. To all of my brothers and sisters of all races and creeds out there struggling to get back in the work force, keep the faith. Stay strong. I am praying for you all. Let us hold both parties accountable this November.

It’s been 147 Days since the Democrats allowed EUC to expire and & 153 Days since John Boehner first stated that although EUC wasn’t on the Democrats list of priorities for the budget deal He would still entertain a bill to extend the program providing it’s paid for by cuts elsewhere AND contains a measure that creates jobs!
Some people on here that are not unemployed but come on these blogs to promote their political preference will try to convince you that Boehner is asking for the impossible but believe me his request is very reasonable. The House passed 45 Jobs bills (many with Democrats support) that Harry Reid refuses to allow vote on and he is demanding that at least 1 of them be attached to the unemployment extension or voted on! He was even reasonable enough to allow Democrats to come up with their own job creation measure instead if the choose.Democrats are still refusing to meet his demands witch is holding up a extension of unemployment. ..Speaker Boehner even reached out to the white house and requested a list of jobs bills Obama would find acceptable for the house to attach to the unemployment bill the white house responded by saying Obama is unwilling to compromise on unemployment….You all could continue to blame the Republicans while you wait another 5 months but I think a better use of your time would be to urge the president and Senate Democrats to consider a compromise or attach a jobs bill so we could get this passed.

I never thought I would be in the position I’m in now. I am almost 57 years old and I’ve been working since I was 10. I’m not lazy, and it makes me mad as hell for anyone to insinuate that I am. I never wanted to receive unemployment, but my old boss didn’t give me a choice. I am fortunate enough that I have family that is helping me out some, but I will still lose my vehicle and unable to pay credit card bills, hospital bills or anything else. We’ve got to figure out how to make sure the country knows what we are going through. I hate to admit it, but when I was employed, I didn’t pay much attention to the unemployment. So we have to get our own website or something. 3 plus million people needs to make some noise. The media isn’t helping at all, so we need to do it ourselves.

One thing I don’t understand – why aren’t all the creditors of the long term unemployed using their influence to push for the extension? Most of us are we now all deeply in debt to utility companies, car & mortgage companies, landlords, and credit card companies, etc. I know the amount has to be in the millions, at least. Furthermore, all the defaulted monies will be made up in hiked rate increases, etc.

We have not stopped looking for work, we’re desperate for it. But, what Congress evidently fails to see, is that without basics such as transportation, even if we get an interview, many of us can’t go to that interview. I live in a rural area, my car (which fortunately is older & paid for ) is parked for lack of insurance and gas; there is no bus service to the metro area 30 miles away. Eviction is probably on the agenda for next month, I owe my elderly (late 70s) parents money borrowed to keep necessary bills paid the first 3 months of this year. I’m lucky in that I can at least walk to their house to use the internet & phone.

Just pray. I live in a rural area also, so transportation is a must, my car went out in February. No money to fix. Im approaching the eviction mark now as well, with my three children. I got a call for an interview on tuesday, which is in a nearby city, but guess what….I HAVE NO MONEY TO GET THERE. with all this i still have to put on a poker face for my children, as if all is ok. They are starting to figure out that mommy is struggling. I saw further down in the comments that a woman hung herself the other night due to this. It broke my heart. I havent been able to shake the thought of it. I feel strong because i havent thought to take that route. I feel so bad for her family left behind. I pray daily, and will not stop looking for work. Just keep your faith, hang in there. They wont be able to get past God after treating us this way. I guarantee it! Xoxoxo u all!!!

We expect them to do right and keep being let down. They don’t care about what is right they want to stay in power and for some passing this would mean losing it. They call unemployed people lazy because unemployed people don’t organize and create power. So we have to call, email them and CNN and force this or they will move on to the next issue.

Thanks for the reply…I too cry everyday have panic attacks I never had panic attacks before, i start crying and that leads to not being able to catch my breath, my daughter gets so scared, I am week from eviction,I am at a loss. How can our government abandon us like this? They have no empathy no clue what we are going threw. I was fired from my job at a hospital for being on FMLA( Family Medical leave act ) they say that wasn’t the reason but I know it was, because the reasons they say were not true, they appealed the decision not once but twice saying I left the property for 2 hours, and at some point they said I didn’t clean a isolation room correctly. This is all bullshit. The manager and their attorney lost the appeal both times. What the government should do it crack down theses employers that fire you unjustly, and make them pay a fine for being liars. But why would the government crack down on liars when they themselves are liars. Stupid question

          3:21 a.m.

…FDR basically used and expanded his executive power (originally granted under the Trading With The Enemy Act of 1917) by extending the concept of “national emergency” to include “non military” threats such as the Great Depression.

From his inaugural address concerning the economic crisis:

[“I shall ask the Congress for the one remaining instrument to meet the crisis—broad executive power to wage a war against the emergency, as great as the power that would be given me if we were in fact invaded by a foreign foe.” ]

In 1976, the ability to exercise such sweeping executive power was reined in by passage of the National Emergencies Act which empowers Congress to apply checks and balances on the emergency powers of the President.

So, unfortunately, without Congressional backing, Obama can do nothing on his own to force EUC into law.

Obama does not want unemployment extended if he did he would have never signed any of the bills that were Republican priorities like the $900,000,000,000 farm bill without demanding unemployment be extended….Democrats allowed the program to expire when they left it out of the December budget agreement then forced Republicans too oppose every unemployment bill in the Senate by stuffing the bills with things Republicans oppose. The only reason a unemployment extension made it to the house is because 5 Republicans got tired of the games and authored the 5 month extension on March 9th then as you seen rather then allow a vote on it Harry Reid waited a month to run the time out so that very few states were still tracking the unemployed (even his own state stopped) he refused to attach 1 of the 45 house passed jobs bills sitting in the Senate or one of their own knowing that the bill would not be brought to the house floor. …The Senate recently passed a bipartisan jobs bill and made no attempt to attach the unemployment extension to it nor did Obama demand a vote on EUC before signing it.

I can feel the desperation in some of these posts, and it breaks my heart. I was laid off last April 2013, and have been unable to find work. But I haven’t been waiting for the government to “save me.” I have been selling everything I can, and downsizing my life and consumption, including moving to a low-cost-of-living region. I urge you all, MOVE IN WITH FAMILY, PLACE YOUR CHILDREN IN A SAFE HOME WITH FAMILY, SELL WHATEVER YOU DON’T NEED ON A DAILY BASIS, DOWNSIZE YOUR CAR AND HOME, TAKE A ROOMMATE, TAKE THE BUS. Don’t wait for government help, because it isn’t coming. Make the hard choice now, before it is made for you.

…I would however my life was pretty much already downsized even when I was working as I was making at best, 20,000$ after taxes and deductions per year. As I don’t drive, already using transit and even that is now becoming a luxury at 5$ per day/100$ per month. My place is zoned for only one occupant. Closest family is nearly two thousand miles away.

Fortunately I don’t have any dependents. Then again, if I did, I could have at least received a tax refund from the child tax credit instead of paid taxes this year as well as qualified for DHS (Oregon) rental assistance and a monthly transit pass.

Outside of Early SSI retirement (which I am still 19 months away from qualifying for) there are no resources available where I live.

This pretty much spells it out. Boehner could care less about anyone except for himself. His only focus is to do everything in his power to go against Obama. And Obama is too weak of a president to stand up to this idiot. He should have put Boehner in his place. He is the president. If he doesn’t have the power to override this idiot who is destroying millions of lives, then who does? He needs to knock Boehner off his high horse and do what is right for the country. C’mon Obama, show us you can do something. This idiot is making a fool of you.

We need to bring this to the public, let everyone know they are not safe because they have a job or small business. This is about more than the extension imo it is about a new world order.

We have to band together to get the attention of the media and the government. We can’t go to DC and protest but we can get the story out via the internet.
We can all sit and blog/comment about what is not being done or we could actively do something about it. If we don’t make an effort to stand up for ourselves in some form of protest nothing will ever be done. No one is trying to save us. Respect is not given it’s earned. We need to gain the respect of the Government by standing up for ourselves and letting them know that we are not going to allow them to snuff us out of society. We are not lazy! We are unemployed through no fault of our own!

I posted my story and I hope that you take a few mins to post yours.

THESE SO CALLED “PUBLIC SERVANTS” HAVE CAUSED SO MUCH STRESS AND FINANCIAL HARDSHIP FOR THE MILLIONS OF UNEMPLOYED WHO HAVE BEEN WITHOUT UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS SINCE LAST DECEMBER, WHILE WAITING FOR THESE CARRER POLITICIANS TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND PASS THE EXTENSION BILL IN THE SENATE.

WHAT ARE THE DEMOCRATS PREPARED TO DO ABOUT THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION BILL? DO THEY PLAN TO WASH THEIR HANDS OF THE WHOLE ISSUE? THERE ARE STILL MORE THAN 2.6 MILLION UNEMPLOYED FAMILES WITHOUT ANY MEANS TO SUPPORT THEMSELVES SINCE LAST DECEMBER. THEY NEED YOUR HELP PEOPLE. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE ALREADY TURNED THEIR BACKS AGAINST THEM, AND HAVE TRIED EVERY DELAYING TACTIC KNOWN TO MAN, SO THE BILL COULD NOT BE PASSED IN TIME. THESE MILLIONS OF FAMILIES, FOR THE PAST FIVE MONTHS HAVE SUFFERED EVICTIONS, HOME FORECLOSURES, BANKRUPTCY, AND HOMELESSNESS, BECAUSE OF YOUR LACK OF COMPASSION AND HUMAN DECENCY. THE UKRAINE HAS RECENTLY BEEN GIVEN BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN FOREIGN AID, WHAT ABOUT THE POOR AND UNEMPLOYED IN THIS COUNTRY? THEY WORK ONLY FOR THEMSELVES AND THE LOBBYISTS WHO BOUGHT THEM. THEY ARE USELESS, AND SHOULD BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE IN THE COMING ELECTIONS. THERE IS NO EXCUSE WHATSOEVER, TO HAVE NOT PASSED THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION BILL FOR THESE MILLIONS OF STRUGGLING FAMILIES WITH NO INCOME. …on June 1st there should be a moment of silence to remember the three million + who were led on for five months and then forsaken by our government officials who are more interested in the upcoming elections than caring for the people who they are supposed to represent.

This whole situation was nothing but a charade to generate “political ammunition” for both sides in their upcoming campaigns. Had they decided to include EUC in the December budget bill, there would be no question over “implementation” as there would have been no need for a retroactive provision that spanned for months. As I mentioned before, It was all a ploy to purposely make the EUC extension an election issue, irregardless of the social collateral damage it caused.

The lives and futures of over 3 million (plus family members) have effectively become just another “campaign expenditure” for the 2014 mid term elections.

Our government has sunk to an all time new low.

We should pay attention to how Congress and the media are using the word ‘lazy’. They are labeling and dehumanizing people who are unemployed through no fault of their own. They all know there are 4 people for every job, they know most unemployed are over 40 and they know 200,000 are military vets and that number will swell to almost a million before the year is over. Lazy is a code word that use to mean Blacks and Latinos now it is being used on mainstream America. This the same tactic used in everything from slavery to the holocaust.
