Reid Backs Gillibrand’s Military Sexual Assault Proposal

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., announced Tuesday he will support legislation from Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand to remove prosecutions of serious crimes, including sexual assault, from the military chain of command.

Within the past few weeks, Reid met with both Gillibrand and Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who has been advocating changes pushed by the Armed Services Committee. Reid also met with various outside groups lobbying on the issue.

The majority leader decided late last week to break from the position of Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin and military top brass to support the Gillibrand bill. White House spokesman Jay Carney declined to state President Barack Obama’s preference on the issue when asked Tuesday, and the administration’s detailed and wide-ranging statement of policy on this year’s defense authorization released Monday stated only that it “commends the Committee for working to offer stronger protections for sexual assault victims.”

“I’m going to support Gillibrand and Sen. Levin knows that,” Reid told reporters after Democrats’ weekly caucus luncheon.

Gillibrand said earlier Tuesday that she had the support of more than half of the Senate for her measure, which will need to clear a 60-vote threshold in order to be adopted. The New York Democrat, who has made sexual assault in the military her signature issue, said she planned to speak to all of the undecided senators on the bill on Tuesday. A vote on her plan could come as early as Wednesday.

I just love my senator who: “who has made sexual assault in the military her signature issue”. A novice in the Senate would show their ignorance of the critical issues facing us. They would probably make jobs,or spending, or balancing the budget, or fixing Obama care, or fighting fraud, their signature issue. Dummies all, as shown by my brilliant Senator. Go .Gillibrand.

Gotta give it up for Gillibrand.
She’s tenacious and doesn’t back down when she knows she’s right.
Gillibrand and Warren should be the ticket in 2016…not Hillary.
    Definitely not Hillary.

Two females, great; however both are far too inexperienced, gung ho, dedicated and scrappers but too inexperienced to lead the nation. I am for a woman President and Vice-President.

Senators Reid and Gillibrand are apparently trying to geld/neuter the US Military. The Military has its own lawyers, the Judge Advocate General Corps. They are perfectly capable of handling cases of Sexual Harassment. If mishandled there is the Military Court of Appeals capable of handling military matters, Gillibrand is doing a lot of showboating as is Reid. The 113th Congress is so incompetent they can’t get much of anything accomplished. Reid threatens and blusters and accomplishes virtually nothing. He acts more like a cattle drover than a leader. He would do well to go back to the record of Senator Mile Mansfield of Montana and learn leadership rather than the bullying tactics which will end up getting him put Into the hospital with numerous cuts and bruises. His arrogance is at best distasteful at worst demeaning to the Senate and the nation. Tend to important business such as bringing to trial Obama, Clinton, Panetta, Holder and Dempsey for the serious offenses they have committed. Harry, that was on Sept 11, 2012.
