Reid: Koch Brothers Aren’t Interested In Unemployment Extension, Minimum Wage

reid022 020414 445x296 Reid: Koch Brothers Arent Interested In Unemployment Extension, Minimum Wage

(Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call File Photo)

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid launched a new assault on the Koch brothers, blaming them for House Republicans’ not passing an extension of unemployment benefits, a minimum wage hike or other parts of the Democratic agenda.

“Their billionaire sugar-daddies aren’t interested in helping middle class Americans get a fair shot. Charles and David Koch aren’t concerned with the long-term unemployed families, and so the Republicans that they sponsor in the House of Representatives are content to do nothing for the long-term unemployed,” Reid said, renewing his barrage against the wealthy businessmen and donors to a variety of conservative causes.

The Nevada Democrat spoke on Monday to open the Senate for a monthlong work period.

“Some of the most popular performances in Nevada are magicians and illusionists who entertain their audiences by making the impossible seem real,” Reid said, setting up his line of the day. “It seems that the Republican Party has decided to follow in Houdini and Copperfield’s footsteps and play a bit of misdirection of its own.”

Reid was highlighting recent reports that he would be made a campaign issue in Senate races across the country, a role he seems to relish.

“I’m not running for anything for a few more years,” Reid said. “As I’ve said before, being a target of a couple rich billionaires is not going to intimidate me.”

Reid espoused the view that Republican interests were turning their campaign fire on him because the effort to campaign against the health care law has “proven to be a miserable failure.”

As for more immediate business, Reid formally teed up a procedural vote for Wednesday on taking up legislation to increasing the federal minimum wage. That measure is not expected to gain the 60 votes needed to overcome the initial filibuster hurdle.

“As the Senate turns its attention to increasing the federal minimum wage, which we moved to earlier today, is there any question as to whether Republicans will once again do the Koch brothers bidding? Of course not,” Reid said. “They’re not ready to give millions of Americans a fair shot at earning a decent wage.”

Wow,,,,unbelievable!!!!! If this article doesn’t spell it out for everyone, than apparently you are not paying attention… The 1% has never ever cared for the middle class and the poor, so why should we think different now. Looks like Boehner, its bought and paid for and you know what that makes him! The thing that is disturbing for me is the lack of media coverage around UI and all the children and elderly that are suffering. What makes matters worst is that Congress chose to take care of a foreign nation before making things right with the American citizens. How can they debate for two weeks and then decide to send over a billion dollars to the Ukraine. Now, I hear that the US is supplying the rebels in Ukraine with weapons. DISGRACEFUL.. Every American, whether you are EMPLOYED or UNEMPLOYED should be pissed that the government is just Bulls@#$$## with peoples lives. If you are employed and feel that you are somewhat protected, think again. You may be employed, but you are not part of the one percent. I found this video on YOUTUBE and found it to be very moving. When this video was first posted on YouTube the number of unemployed was at 2.5 million. That number has increased to over 3 million now. Check out the video and I hope that you enjoy it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cb4l-OTSjDs

MR BOEHNER IS BOUGHT AND PAID FOR BY THE KOCH BROTHERS AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THE PRESIDENT IS THINKING I THINK HE SHOULD IMPLEMENT SOME KIND OF JOB CREATION BUT I HAVE LEANED SOMETHING THIS YEAR WHICH I KNEW BUT DIDN’T WANT TO EXCEPT , REPUBLICANS ARE FOR THE RICH ONLY NOT THE ORDINARY AMERICAN I WILL MAKE SURE I VOTE IN CONGRESS THIS YEAR

    • Larry king

There is a reason why there isn’t as much news coverage as there should be. Think about it. It’s because the 1% can buy off the media as well. Money has the power to manipulate everything. The 1% doesn’t want this to be national headlines. That would hurt their mission because it would make more people aware of what is happening.

If you want to see what is happening to this country, there is a documentary on Netflix called, “Inequality for us all”. If you watch this you will understand what is happening to our country. We are in serious trouble right now and something needs to be done. The golden years are over.

      • Mark

        How’s the new job??

        • Larry king

It’s great! And like I told you before you scumbag, I am not going away. This whole ordeal was a wake up call for me and millions of other EX-republicans. The damage to my life has already been done. It will take years before this will not be a reminder of how corrupt the republican party has become. This isn’t the same republican party as it once was. That is why we are going to remove as many republicans from office as it takes in order to get take our country back. You are such a puss that you can’t even use your real name when you post.

          • Mark

Nobody can damage your life but you. No one is responsible for how you deal with your losses but you. You are weak. You accept no responsiblity for your situation. You are exactly where you are supposed to be.

    “Koch Pipeline Company LP”
Guess that is why they want to ad the keystone project to the unemployment. One can assume that their company will be the one laying the pipe.Just like the pipe they are laying up the rears of the AMERICAN people. They don’t care about anyone but themselves.Typical rich kids whose daddy came up with a great idea how to refine oil better. They came up with nothing themselves but greed

Another example of how House Republicans hold the American people hostage while they bargain for their bull#*^t.

Accrding to the info below,it appears that are elected officials are nothing more than pawns that this family plays with, unbelievable

Koch Industries has spent more than $50 million to lobby in Washington between 2006 and October 2011, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.[39]

The company has opposed the regulation of financial derivatives and limits on greenhouse gases.[39] It sponsors free market foundations and causes.[54][55]

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, many of Koch
Industries’ contributions have gone toward achieving legislation on energy issues, defense appropriations and financial regulatory reform.[56] Koch Industries has been criticized by the environmentalist group Greenpeace for the role they allege the company plays in affecting climate change policy in the United States, along with other major producers of oil and petroleum like ExxonMobil and Chevron.[57][58] Koch Industries replied saying the Greenpeace report “distorts the environmental record of our companies.”[59][context?]

One policy proposal to control global warming that Koch Industries has come out against is Low Carbon Fuel Standards, such as were passed in 2007 in California.[22]
According to Koch Industries, “LCFS would cripple refiners that rely on
heavy crude feedstocks to provide the transportation fuels that keep
    America moving.”[60]

The Koch Industries website includes an opinion piece from the Wall Street Journal by Charles Koch, one of the company’s owners, “Why Koch Industries is Speaking Out.”[61]
The article states: “Because of our activism, we’ve been vilified by
various groups. Despite this criticism, we’re determined to keep
contributing and standing up for those politicians, like Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who are taking these challenges [deficit spending by governments] seriously.”

The company also funds the political action committee KochPAC.

      • aaaa aa

        Hey Greg
        BooHooHoo
Whats the matter with my post.Too many large words/information for you to comprehend

  • aaaa aa

They also seem to like polluting our planet

Bloomberg reports that from 1999 to 2003, Koch Industries was assessed “more than $400 million in fines, penalties and judgments.”[39] Daniel Indiviglio, in a reaction piece appearing in The Atlantic
argues that the Bloomberg article is biased and misleading, asserting
that the Bloomberg team “only found eight instances of alleged
misconduct by a giant multinational over the span of 63 years”.[40]

In 2000, for its 300 reported oil spills which had taken place across
six states, Koch paid the largest civil fine ever imposed on a company
under any federal environmental law for the illegal discharge of crude
oil and petroleum products. In a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department
and the state of Texas, the company agreed to pay a “$30 million civil
penalty, improve its leak-prevention programs and spend $5 million on
    environmental projects.”[41][42][43][44][45][46]

In 1996, an 8-inch-diameter steel LPG pipeline operated by Koch Pipeline Company ruptured near Lively, Texas and began leaking butane
gas. The vapor cloud ignited when two residents drove their pickup
truck through the flammable vapors to get to a neighbor’s house to call 9-1-1
to report the leak. The two were killed in the explosion, and
approximately 25 families were later evacuated from the neighborhood
without injury. An investigation conducted by the NTSB
found that the pipe section which failed had not been shown to have
excessive corrosion in a 1995 inspection. Regulations at the time did
not provide criteria for “adequate cathodic protection.”[47]
Koch also stated that the bacteria-induced corrosion acted quicker than
had ever previously been recorded in the industry. The explosion was
the only event of its kind in the company’s history. In 1999, a Texas
jury found that negligence had led to the rupture of the Koch pipeline
and awarded the victims’ families $296 million – “the largest
compensatory damages judgment in a wrongful death case against a
    corporation in U.S. history”.[39][48]

In 2000, a federal grand jury returned a 97-count indictment against
Koch Industries and its individual employees for environmental crimes
relating to excess emissions of 85 metric tons of benzene, a known
    carcinogen.[49][50]
In 2001, Koch Industries was fined $20 million, of which $10 million
was a criminal fine and $10 million to clean up the environment.[51]

Who cares old man….but we do care how you accumulated such a massive fortune after so many years in the public sector? Is that the stink of corruption I smell?

  • GT Senior

Instead of stirring the pot, why doesn’t he try working with the GOP and get the UI passed. This is wasted time, let’s spend our time on something that won’t pass, instead of continuing to try and get something they have passed through the House. A successful business doesn’t through barbs at each other, they work together. If managers and employees of a business acted this way the guys do, either the business would close down, or the employee would be out of a job. And, they will be unemployed but not receiving benefits because they were fired for not doing their job. It is time Congress stopped acting like a bunch of kids pointing their fingers at each other and saying they did it, and do the job we are paying them to do. And instead of wasting time on things they know won’t pass, use it to work on the tax extenders. Instead of passing them as one large package, all together so big corporations like GE continue to get their tax breaks, spend the time and do it one tax at a time, save our country billions of dollars.

    • greg huggins

DEMOCRATS DO NOT NOT WANT AN EXTENSION EITHER,THIS IS JUST A POLITICAL PLOY !!!!!!

      • Bev

That’s a crock and you know it. The sad thing is that I believe some of those House Republicans actually want the extension too(after all it does put more money in the system which those people will spend somewhere and in doing so, it will help keep the economy improving). Unfortunately, those same members of the GOP are sadly lacking in backbone, basic compassion and general concern for the good of US citizens. If they possessed those characteristics and truly understood what their job was supposed to be, this would never have been an issue. If the House GOP could just do the right thing and not have to use it at leverage to get something else they want, I think the roof would cave in on their heads.

      • ex-Republican

greg greg greg have you not been following the news, every single Democrat wants this passed, wake up Man, the Repukelicans have shown us their true colors, and it is not red whit and blue, it’s pink.

The financial class is in power not the working class. It is time to throw the money lenders out of the temple of our society.

      • DJMiles

We will definitely find out if your right if they allow the $85,000,000,000 tax extenders pass without demanding the unemployment extension be attached to them like it was in 2010….
The tax extenders expired at the same time as unemployment did in Dec they like unemployment are renewed every year or sometimes 2 ….As you know no bills that come out of the house could be approved unless the Democrats who control the Senate also pass it and the President signs it and I can not see them giving $85 billion in tax breaks for companies that relocate oversees while 3 million Americans are struggling with no money. Many Republican leaders have already been talking about attaching the unemployment extension to the tax extenders since they are considered job creation. …Democrats also are planning a vote on the tax extenders in the Senate very soon We will have to wait and see I guess…The house begins voting on the tax extenders today.

The current congress and its Republican parasites have cured me of ever voting Republican again in my life. They got 32 years out of me, and then they turn around and do this to us?? Americans?? Veterans?? Their own voter base??? They will NEVER EVER EVER get another vote out of me, ever, and based on life expectancy, that could be another 30 years of voting. They’re scum, and apparently the Democrats have been right all along–GOP has supported EUC during every administration before this one, so yeah, their problem is the current presidents race/color. Hate to admit it. They’re stonewalling every single thing he tries to/has tried to do. Everything. I’m a US veteran who has voted straight R my whole life. Never again. They burned 3 million Americans, about half of which are (were?) Republican, and are obviously confident that we’ll be struck with amnesia in November when it’s time to vote. They think they can do this and it won’t ever come back to haunt them. Vote every last one of them out.

How can we impeach these government officials? It’s unbelievable that they are able to do this to the AMERICAN people. Don’t they know that unemployment is taxed and the being on welfare isn’t. That in order to get unemployment you have to have had a job. So now they want everybody to go on welfare, and no taxes will be paid only by the employed and the rich. Once the employed figure out everybody is on welfare and not paying their share, no one will feel the need to work and let the people getting incomes pay for everything.

Sad but true. It’s really inevitable, because it’s literally impossible to pay off the debt we owe and to recover from what these fleas in legislation have done. YOU ALL HAVE BEEN WARNED, ANYONE HEAR THE QUOTE “EVIL WILL PREVAIL WHEN GOOD MEN DO NOTHING”? YEAH IT’S HAPPENING AND YOU’RE STILL SITTING THERE.

    • ex-Republican

It’s not impossible it’s been done before and can be done again, debt in an of itself is not a bad thing, who buys their home with cash. This bill is paid for and does not increase the National debt, just what the Repukelicans asked for, this bill increases the GDP, adds jobs, and staves of many adverse affects to the lives of hardworking American citizens.

      • Michael Mlyniec

Obviously you have no known knowledge of economics. I wish to help you out by referring you to Karl Denninger of http://market-ticker.org/ . It is literally —>IMPOSSIBLE<— to come back from our debt unless we enacted a landmass redistribution. Let me put it in perspective, The Entire GDP of Canada is around $1.8T, we're in debt for $-17T.

I also was not arguing against EUC, I see it as a necessary step to provide for what the politicians have done to the economy.

        • ex-Republican

I am with you Michael, I see this as the beginning of the end of our country, as we knew it. My entire life was spent trying to keep up with the Jones’s, snooty snobs, with no tolerance for anybody with less and absolute jealousy for those who had more. I will be penniless within the month, every thing I have worked for will be gone, literally no jobs in NJ, -1200 in March. My industry (financial services), no longer exists. I never would have thought in my wildest dreams that the republican party would pull this kind of stunt. Thank goodness for my wonderful fiancé, and her wonderful children and my dogs, I walk them in the park and I pray that this will soon change. We need to stand together, I have seen the light, all I see when I look at these scumbag republicans politicians are the snooty snobs I grew up with. Truth…they hate us and they could give a hoot. I am looking into the abyss, and all I see is John McCain turning his back on his fellow comrades and when that happens, I know we are finished as a society. If I were single, I would leave and start anew in Europe. I would be homeless, if it were not for the grace of others. Holy Mother, pray for us all.

What YOU don’t understand is that Unemployment is yet another insurance scam set up by the government you love so much. ok you are so far off reality its amazing number 1: unemployment benefits are paid into by both employee and employers unlike welfare number 2: your an idiot number 3: we are broke as a country because of the bush family we have seen more unnecessary war under the 2 bushes administration than in the last 50 years and what do we do when we are attacked??????? bail out banks for being irresponsible for billions so they can lend us the tax payers money that bailed them out WITH interest forcing americans to take out 2nd morgages and borrow from peter to pay paul.

          • Kate

You nasty little man, until they provide jobs unemployment should be available plain and simple. Hmm maybe our govt wouldn’t be in the crapper if they didn’t send billions of dollars to countries that despise us. Or maybe the 350 billion they just passed for more tax loopholes for corporations. Really? No pay backs necessary for that. Why is that?

          • BOBBY I

Both sides are at fault for not getting the extension done.Goes to show that our country is run by the 1% wealthiest folks. The Koch brothers. They get the rep. people they want in and then those have to vote on what they want done or they[Boehner] are gone. What gets me is that we can send Ukraine 10 BILLION in the blink of an eye, but to help over three million americans and their families it takes for ever,or in this case maybe never.Whats wrong with this picture? By not extending the bennifits it is costing us jobs, taxes, more on welfare, food stamps, etc. Im sick of this government and how slow they are

I am working a part-time job right now and constantly looking for something full-time. I have worked since I was 15 years old(and before that I babysat full-time in the summer starting at the age of 12). I have done factory work(been a union steward), waited tables, bartended, managed restaurants and a retail store. I am a college graduate and a single mother of two teenage daughters. I have had utilities shut off several times and lost my car for over a month. I struggle to buy clothes and groceries constantly. How can this be the “greatest country on earth” when hard working citizens are dismissed like this? How can this be right and just?

I hate to tell you this, but you really shouldn’t count on the unemployment benefits extension happening anytime soon. I was cut off in December and was only one week into my federal extension. I have been watching this like a hawk since. These clowns are only playing games with us. It’s like they have the money on a string and each time you feel like you almost have it, they pull the string away and it is out of your reach again. It is all games. They flat out DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE UNEMPLOYED OR THE MIDDLE CLASS! The only thing we can do is to vote them out of office in November. And remember to do it no matter what! YOUR VOTE COUNTS! The 1% will try to buy the election. They pay off the media to keep us out of the news. Just because you don’t hear anything new in the news doesn’t mean we have lost, it just means the 1% is trying to shut us up. PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO VOTE THESE CLOWNS OUT OF OFFICE IN NOVEMBER! WE ALL MUST VOTE IN ORDER FOR IT TO HAPPEN!!!!

They want them out and you can’t blame them. These are greedy, racist people who have a 1950′s mindset. They only see the COLOR GREEN. The KOCH Brothers are out of touch. They are the new day Pharohs, hitlers, people who are all about Power, Money and Control just like that GUY in New Jersey Named George E. If the House Democrats vote for anything else this session without tacking on an extension of unemployment insurance, then they are as much to blame as Republicans.

If the media isn’t covering this every day, then they are as much to blame as the politicians.

If 3 million long-term unemployed workers are not enough to justify a vote, wait until there are 5 million or 10 million. How much do you think it will cost before the government finds the time to finally deal with unemployment?

The American people need to speak up and demand action.
    Silence = consent.

    • DerekJR321

Honestly, I haven’t seen the media even mention this bill. And I agree.. they should filibuster any other bill that comes up if it doesn’t have an unemployment extension on it. Do you know what is on their agenda for tomorrow (the 29th)? Tax breaks for Corporations to the tune of $85 BILLION. They’ve handed Ukraine a billion. They’ve given Malaysia close to 4 billion for this plane crash. But help the unemployed in THIS country? Oh no… Boehner has been whining that the bill needs to be paid for. IT IS. So then he starts whining that it needs to have jobs tacked on. What he means is, they need to pass stage 4 of the Keystone pipeline, so that his overseers the Koch brothers can get their corporate money. Oh.. and don’t forget they of course have to try for the thousandth time to go after Obama care. Because that REALLY has something to do with Unemployment.

The bottom line is this.. and I know this because I’ve been watching both sides very closely for a while now. Neither Republicans nor Democrats give a damn about the unemployed. Dems know it is a talking point, because they knew that Boehner would be against it. They don’t see it as a travesty to the American people. They see it as ammo for the upcoming elections. None of them will bend over backwards to help us. And the republicans are just heartless.

I’ve faced the facts. The government, including the President DO NOT care about us. We’ve been written off.

    who are these koch suckers?

  • EagleEye

Reid is right the Koch Brothers, do not care about the minimum wage, unemployment, or the American middle class, more importantly the Vets who served, our country! Koch Brothers, want their Keystone Pipeline to go through, and because the American people along with the rest of the world are seeing the effects on this world’s climate, from all the greenhouse gas. And the devastation from all the oil spills. This country, and the world are making changes that threaten the Koch Brother’s industry, oil and gas! So no they are not promoting anything for the American middle class, the Vets, the unemployed! They don’t care! They want to keep us down, so we will be under their control! All they care about is their own Greedy Agendas, making money by the destroying this planet!! They want the Keystone pipeline, to go through, and they are not stopping at anything to accomplish that, along with all the tax breaks for big corporation! So absolutely we need to VOTE OUT THE KOCH BROTHER’s Puppets out of office!! Boehner, and the rest of the Republicans clowns, in the house need to be VOTED OUT! Let them have a taste of what its like to not have a job, to be let GO!!! And more importantly, Unemployment is paid for, it is NOT a hand out! Unemployment is first paid for by the employers to the states, through payroll unemployment taxes!! Each employer pays taxes on their payroll, each and EVERY quarter! Its call SUTA,(State Unemployment Tax Act) and then they pay FUTA (Federal Unemployment Tax Act), on the first 10,000 earned on each employee, each year!! So these are benefits the American unemployed are entitled to! But again the Republicans are the puppets of the Koch Brothers…and because the Koch Brother, are not getting what they want, they will not allow the hardworking middle class Americans, and our Vets to be given the assistance, the Benefits we deserve! BECAUSE THEY ARE TO GREEDY!! THEY ARE NOT MAKING MONEY! SO WHY SHOULD WE!!!! SERIOUSLY COME NOVEMBER VOTE ALL REPUBLICANS OUT!!! We the other 99%, need to take control back from the 1%…. VOTE OUT BOEHNER, and the rest of the Republicans Puppets, come November!

Everyone start paying attention to the house today as they begin voting on the $85,000,000,000 Un paid for tax extenders with are tax breaks for companies that relocate outside the US…The tax extenders have been renewed every 2 years since Obama took office and we’re used as a compromise to extend unemployment after a 2 month lapse in 2010. A few Republican leaders have already been talking about attaching the unemployment Extension to the tax extenders and Senate Democrats are soon to begin voting on the tax extenders in the coming days. This will definitely tell us if the Democrats want unemployment extended or if it’s just being used for political gain.

  • Bikerdude

For my own part, I am not so well satisfied of the goodness of this
thing. I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the
means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making
them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of
it. In my youth I traveled much, and I observed in different
countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the
less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on
the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for
    themselves, and became richer.

Despite a 6.7 percent unemployment rate, the country’s long-term unemployment benefits are in flux, causing many Americans to scramble without a livable income. Congress has been slow to respond to the problem, and its latest effort, a five-week extension of long-term unemployment benefits, is a woefully inadequate solution.

There are two unemployment categories: short-term, which involves people who have spent at least five weeks looking for jobs, and long-term, which refers to those who have been job-hunting for more than 27 weeks, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The current eligibility requirements for receiving unemployment benefits stipulate that those who are unemployed long-term can only receive benefits if they can prove they are actively searching for work. The extension awaits President Barack Obama’s signature, but it is just a bandage on the nation’s unemployment rate.

    • kiontra

I just read this as well. So does that mean it doesnt need to go through the house? Only presidents signature for approval??

There are two unemployment categories: short-term, which involves people who have spent at least five weeks looking for jobs, and long-term, which refers to those who have been job-hunting for more than 27 weeks, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The current eligibility requirements for receiving unemployment benefits stipulate that those who are unemployed long-term can only receive benefits if they can prove they are actively searching for work. The extension awaits President Barack Obama’s signature, but it is just a bandage on the nation’s unemployment rate.

Originally proposed on Nov. 2, the Senate kicked the bill around in debate until the legislature passed on April 7. Although extending benefits to those who need assistance is noble, the legislation would only extend benefits until June 1. After 27 weeks, long-term unemployed individuals who aren’t actively seeking jobs will be without a lifeboat.

An extension will assist the long-term unemployed for now, but it would offer no lasting solutions for chronically unemployed Americans. When unemployment benefits drop off, some may turn to welfare and stop looking for work. America’s gross domestic product will also suffer if unemployed people drop out of the workforce. An April 17 data analysis by statistical website FiveThirtyEight found that someone who loses a job when the unemployment rate is high is more likely to remain unemployed than someone who loses a job when the rate is lower. By that logic, the unemployed will be set back further as long as the unemployment rate remains high, which should give Congress an incentive to assist the unemployed through outreach services.

A more permanent extension of long-term unemployment benefits would increase the job-searching requirement, which doesn’t guarantee individuals will find work but could increase the chances of doing so. Searching for a job can be time-consuming and tedious, so the government should provide more guidance, such as resume advice, for potential employees to prepare them to reenter the workforce. People who rely on unemployment benefits should be required to complete such classes to ensure everyone has the skills to find jobs.

Rather than cut benefits for the long-term unemployed, the Senate and House of Representatives need to cooperate to draft a new bill that would prepare the unemployed to reenter the workforce rather than leave them dependent on federal dollars. The unemployed are not unfortunate barnacles on the American economy—they are just down on their luck and want to get back to work as soon as possible, but they can’t do it on their own.

Whats funny is all this alk about a handout? Work 4 years, do hardly anything then live off the taxpayers the rest of your life making more than the average worker makes. Then get ignorant people backing them and happy to pay them to sit on their bum the rest of their lives for doing next to nothing while insulting and criticizing people who have worked hard all their lives “DECADES” Is anyone dumb enough to believe someone would work hard to get where they are then let it all go because all of the sudden they are now lazy? A majority of the ones losing everything haven’t received any help for months, though some think that’s because they are lazy and apparently dumb now and chose poverty just waiting for that huge unemployment check to come back.. You know the one that made them all too comfortable and lazy.. Yeah right not a paid vacation just a bit of something to squeak by and hardly a hand out? Also even with an extension still temporary help for at one time hard working fellow AMERICANS down on their luck

The Senate! Why in the world are they playing chess with this unemployment bill? They vote in the Judges and other bills so quickly and ignored the unemployed for months. They moving an inch at a time every two weeks then go on another recess. All of the American people on unemployment have been waiting for this government bill to be passed for almost five months. These senator made there point and broke the backs of many Americans needing this unemployment bill passed for emergency economic triage. The only example these senators are showing is keeping the money back for themselves for reinvestment, and as far as they are concerned there is no profit in unemployment so why pay for it. Mr. President eighty six the keystone pipeline and there money making dreams! Mutually assured destruction! No money for them and their budget plans! :)

  • S.2148

These Senators who are trying to push the XL Keystone pipeline are shaking hands with the rich Canadian oil business men

  • S.2148

I bet the $9.5 billion unemployment money is being coveted for the XL Keystone pipeline costing $5.4 billion

  • S.2148

If the House of Representative do not help Americas unemployment extension then scuttle the XL Keystone Pipeline

    • erick

The long term unemployed are being held hostage to blackmail the administration into approving the XL pipeline. The XL pipeline will make another billion for the multi billionaire Koch brothers. John Boehner is merely serving his puppet masters.

  • S.2148

The 61% approval for the Keystone Pipeline is not part of the 3.8 million needing unemployment money.

  • S.2148

Helping the American people that need this unemployment bill makes a lot of sense just on the moral principle alone!

EUC must pass!!! Our Congress is not too busy this week that this urgent and unattended matter can not immediately be brought up for a simple vote in our House of Representatives! If a Road and Bridges bill that is another blank check govt contractor,or a TAX EXTENDER for the wealthiest US Corporations to pay zero in federal income taxes for another two years is more important than the CITIZENS OF THIS GREAT NATION surviving another month, then all rational thinking has left Washington!! I have been taught that Corporate Tax Evasion is not only TOTALLY ILLEGAL but is the SOURCE and FUNDING behind OUR JOBS being OUTSOURCED to crooked third-world governments who pay slave wages. Yet Congress has the audacity to insist this is a “job creator”!!! If JOHN BOEHNER and the GOP really wanted to see a “JOB CREATION” they would quit protecting these back room lobbyists whose only job is to harm working citizens!!@! Fortunately for the unemployed the Irony of this No Tax Extension set for debate tomorrow could not come at a better time. This is not an issue Congress wants to receive press attention since it is once again TOTALLY ILLEGAL and funded by Corporate Lobbyists. There are many more little people affected by this who desperately need the 10 billion in aide from OUR government than the 1% of Corporate America that would enjoy another $85,000,000,000 in record profits while being taxed the least in the Western Hemisphere. How can America allow this to occur unless the unemployed are finally heard?

I can’t believe that after ALL of this time, and after break after break, we still have no extension bill passed in the senate. This proves that the republican party never had ANY intention to pass this bill REGARDLESS of what concession was offered to them. These republican senators have shown their true distain for the poor people in this country. There can be no other explanation for their lack of total compassion and empathy with those in our country who are hurting financially in one of the worse recessions in many years. As a “FORMER” republican, I’m shocked and disappointed by the party that once was my own. I will NEVER EVER vote for a republican again in the future, and will encourage family and friends to do the same. The republican party has lost it’s way and are no longer relevant to it’s constituents. Just what kind of game are they playing here? When we have more than two million families out of work, without any benefits, struggling from day to day to keep a roof over their children’s heads, and food on the table, they’re playing party politics? These senators are heartless, soulless, bureaucrats, who do not care about you and me, but ONLY themselves and their party. We need to make a huge change in the next elections, and make sure that the republicans are never in charge again to do this sort of thing to helpless people.

The unemployment rate is artificially falling. People who are not able to collect benefits are not being counted. I think ion many states about a month after they exhausted benefits they do not count. Therefore it creates an illusion of a good job market. They need to look at the number of actual jobs and that has been reduced. The Central budgeting office has said that is is good policy. We need to make the tiered extension plan of 2013 permanent. Take the politics out of it. When unemployment levels in any state reach the tiers the extensions just go into effect. they wasted too much time not doing anything. How many days did they delay this. Jobs can be created by fixing our roads, bridges and dams. These projects do not need to be given out as tacked on pork but rather a thought out plan based on need. This is bad government

    • eddieknucks

Exactly! When folks stop claiming benefits here in Michigan, their no longer considered unemployed. Smoke and mirrors people.

In an opening statement on the Markup of Selected Expired Tax Provisions, Sandy Levin busted Republicans for seeking to irresponsibly add $310 billion to the deficit in order to pass tax provisions that they are providing no offsets for. Now remember, they wouldn’t pass long term unemployment benefits without offsets.
Everything must be paid for, they’ve lectured from on high, whenever Democrats have tried to ease the suffering of the working people. However, even when they got the offsets provided by a bipartisan Senate bill, they still balked. This inaction suggested once again that it wasn’t really about the deficit at all, and today the proof of that suggestion was served.
Levin noted that there are merits to the tax provisions being proposed, “But the manner in which Republicans are proceeding – selecting six of the approximately 60 tax provisions that expired last year to make permanent, without any offsets – is both fiscally irresponsible and fundamentally hypocritical. And its implications are deeply troublesome.”
How troublesome? Oh, gee: “The Joint Committee on Taxation has estimated that the bills, without an offset, would add a combined $310 billion to the deficit. To put that figure into context, that total represents more than half of the entire federal deficit this year – which I should note is the lowest it has been since President Obama took office.”

FOR ANYONE WHO THINKS THAT ITS NOT THE REPUBLICANS FAULT I DISAGREE WITH BURN THE MEMORIALS AND MONUMENTS THEY ARE THE ONLY MEMORY WE HAVE THAT THIS WAS ONCE THE GREATEST NATION UNDER GOD “WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL” UNFORTUNATELY IS NOW “WITH POLITICS AND INJUSTICE FOR ALL”. these people would of been shot for treason in the old days instead they work a measly 140 days out of a 365 day year and get paid a MINIMUM salary of 335,000 a year I want my country back where the president wasn’t a blatant figure head of a financial regime it is now clear the president holds no power when 1 man can hold millions as hostages and the president “urges him to allow a vote” thats bs if the president is running this country then he is in essence the boss and if I told my boss NO I got FIRED! !!!!!!!!!!!! Boehner no longer deserves and pink slip he deserves a bullet just like other traitors and terrorist which are the only people I know that commit treason and hold hostages.

People need to wake up to see what’s happening. Money from the rich is being flowed into the pockets of congressmen and soon enough citizens will be stripped of their guns and govt will have full control

    • jack dee

They can strip my gun from my cold dead hand the only reason that people of Congress are afraid of firearms is not because of crime because criminals dont register guns its so when America wakes up and realizes we are being policed and controlled like lab rats we will rise up and it will be an easier fight if we are unarmed

THE REPUBLICANS HAVE CONTINUED THEIR WAR ON THE UNEMPLOYED THIS WEEK. REPUBLICANS SUCH AS JOHN BOEHNER CONTINUE TO REFUSE TO PASS THE MUCH NEEDED UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION BILL THAT WOULD GIVE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO THE MORE THAN 2 MILLION FAMILIES WITHOUT BENEFITS SINCE LATE DECEMBER. THESE MILLIONS OF FAMILIES HAVE BEEN FACING EVICTIONS, HOME FORECLOSURES, PERSONAL BANKRUPTCIES, AND HOMELESSNESS, WHILE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY CONTINUES TO PLAY “PARTY POLITICS” AND CONTINUES TO USE THEIR VOTE AS POLITICAL LEVARAGE AND AS BARGAINING CHIPS, TO FURTHER THEIR POLITICAL PARTY’S AGENDA. THEY HAVE SHOWN A TOTAL LACK OF COMPASSION AND CONCERN FOR THESE POOR FAMILIES STRUGGLING DAY TO DAY. FIVE MONTHS HAS GONE BY WITHOUT PASSING THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION. THESE FAMILIES HAVE LOST HOPE AND HOME AND CREDIT WHILE THESE POLITICANS PLAY THEIR GAMES. LETS US WRITE OR CALL OUR REPUBLICAN SENATORS AND DEMAND THAT THEY SHOW A LITTLE HUMAN COMPASSION AND DECENCY AND PASS THIS BILL IMMEDIATELY.

  • Angela Jones

The KOCH BROTHERS AND BOEHNER WORK FOR THE ANTI CHRIST. THEY ARE THE PEOPLE THE LORD TALKS ABOUT IN OUR LAST DAYS. THEY WILL BE SELFISH, GREEDY, EVIL AND THEIR HEARTS WAX COLD. PRAY FOR THEM AND TURN THEM OVER TO GOD. LET GODS VENGENCE FALL ON THEM AND EACH OF THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS. GOD KNOWS HOW TO GET THE ATTENTION OF GREEDY, EVIL, SELFISH, COLD HEARTED MEN LIKE THEM. YOU SEE WHAT HE DID TO PHAROH. HE DESTROYED EVERYTHING AND TOOK HIS FAMILY. GOD DON’T BLESS NO MESS.

ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD CAN’T BUY THEM THEIR HEALTH. GOD COULD PLAGUE THEM WITH CANCER OR SOME INCURABLE DISEASE. HE SEES WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND HE SEES THE PEOPLE WHO ARE STUGGLING AND HURT BY THIS LOSS. THESE GREEDY EVIL MEN FAIL TO REALIZE THAT ALL KNEES SHOW BOWS AND ALL SHALL CONFESS. EVEN SATAN FELL TO HIS KNEES AND GOD BOOTED HIM STRAIGHT TO HELL. THESE MEN WILL MEET AN UNTIMELY DISEASE AND IT WILL NOT BE CURABLE.

It’s been an ongoing struggle, and fight, for the 2.6 million unemployed workers in this country, who have been without unemployment benefits, since late last December. Over the past five months, these families have had to endure evictions, home foreclosures, personal bankruptcy, and homelessness, while waiting for the senate to pass the unemployment extension bill. The unemployment extension bill, has been held hostage, by the republican senate, as a political leverage tool, to get the XL Pipeline bill passed by the president. Clearly the republican’s focus is on making sure their lobbyist’s best interests are being represented. It’s sad that their total disregard for the plight of these poor unemployed families, have taken a backseat in their political agenda. While these republican senators continue to postpone, and delay voting on the bill, more and more families have seen their lives destroyed financially. These families need HELP NOW. The republicans have done themselves a great disservice by not passing the extension bill. This bill affects more than 2.6 million unemployed workers, who will vote against their party in the coming elections. These people will NOT FORGET.

  • texashoosier

no sane person would want what Reid is pushing.

  • Demogorgon9

Who cares what the Koch brothers think. This whole plutocracy style government that some of the Republicans want has got to stop.

  • YONATAN C

Another thing that the republicans should be “ashamed” of, is the fact that they STILL haven’t passed the unemployment extension bill, for the 2.6 million unemployed families in this country. Since late last December, the republicans have held the extension bill “hostage” in the senate, for political leverage, to get the Koch Brother’s XL Oil Pipeline approved in return for their vote on the extension bill. The republicans have used these unfortunate families as bargaining chips, not caring about what these families are going through. Many of these families have lost everything, while waiting these past five months for the extension bill to pass, to help them survive financially until they find employment. The republicans have continued to make delay after delay, stalling so that time would run out for the passing of the bill in the senate. This was a deliberate act, and these families will now have to continue suffering and struggling without any income. The republicans have shown a total lack of compassion, and common decency towards these families. There are now 2.6 million unemployed, and the number is growing every week. The American people are angry and will voice their anger at the ballot box in the coming elections. They will remember how the republican senate made their lives a living hell.

  • YONATAN C

BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES HAVE FAILED THE POOR AND UNEMPLOYED MISERABLY. THEY HAVE INTENTIONALLY DELAYED AND POSTPONED THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION VOTE IN THE SENATE, UNTIL IT’S BECOME TOO LATE TO PASS. WHILE MILLIONS OF FAMILIES CONTINUE FACING EVICTION, HOME FORECLOSURES, BANKRUPTCY, AND HOMELESSNESS, THE TWO PARTIES HAVE WALKED AWAY FROM THE CRISIS. THEIR LACK OF COMPASSION AND COMMON DECENCY IS APPALLING. HOW CAN 2.6 MILLION UNEMPLOYED, AND FINANCIALLY RUINED PEOPLE, BE LEFT HUNG OUT TO DRY IN THE WIND WITHOUT SUPPORT? WE EVEN RECENTLY HELPED THE UKRAINE WITH BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN AID. WHAT ABOUT THESE FAMILIES HERE?
