Reid Responds to Obama’s Comment on Changing Filibuster

“Does he know we already did that?” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid quipped when asked about a comment President Barack Obama made Wednesday about changing the Senate’s filibuster rule.

Obama told a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee audience in New York that changes are needed to “how a filibuster works.”

“We have made significant progress with regard to judges, tremendous progress,” Reid said.

“We have ambassadors that should be all over the world. These are people who have worked hard, and finally get a chance to be an ambassador. Republicans don’t allow votes on these,” Reid said.

Reid said there have been “conversations over the last couple of weeks” about the rules, but he didn’t sound eager to make changes beyond the new precedent set last November.

“We’re taking a look at this, but we are doing well with the judges. It’s a shame that they’re being obstinate about all these other nominations, but we’re going to take a look at it,” Reid said.

Separately, Sen. Christopher S. Murphy was pleased to hear that the president referred to changing the filibuster. The Connecticut Democrat has been among the most vocal advocates for taking further action — particularly after the Senate minority torpedoed a gun background check bill.

“The president has seen firsthand how broken this place is, Murphy said. “I hope he’s ready to get behind … much more robust rules change. That would be a welcome addition to our cause.”

    “Get Behind a rules change….”????

There is a reason why there are 3 separate and equal branches of government….at least there used to be…..the Executive branch has no place “in getting behind” rules changes unless they are then willing to change the rules on Executive Privilege.
The lack of respect for what was the most deliberative body may be traced to the composition of segment of the membership. Activists and Attorneys. It is becoming increasingly important that people with real world experience…in the private sector…who have produced and created…..populate the Senate. Hopefully then the hallmarks of the Senate will be restored to their rightful position…CIVILITY and DELIBERATION.

THE REPUBLICANS & DEMOCRATIC PARTIES, HAVE FAILED THE MORE THAN 2.6 MILLION UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS WHO ARE STILL OUT OF WORK, WITHOUT AN EXTENSION OF UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS, SINCE LATE LAST DECEMBER. THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WORK, BUT HAVE NOT FOUND EMPLOYMENT . DUE TO MANY FACTORS, SUCH AS “AGE” AND POOR ECONOMY, EMPLOYMENT FOR THESE WORKERS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE POLLS SAY, THE ECONOMY HAS NOT IMPROVED, AND MILLIONS OF WORKERS ARE STILL WITHOUT JOBS. SINCE LAST DECEMBER, THE REPUBLICANS HAVE HELD THE EXTENSION BILL “HOSTAGE” IN THE SENATE, FOR POLITICAL LEVERAGE AND PARTY AGENDA. MEANWHILE, THESE MILLIONS OF FAMILIES, HAVE FACED EVICTION, HOME FORECLOSURES, BANKRUPTCY, AND HOMELESSNESS, WHILE THE POLITICIANS CONTINUE PLAYING PARTY POLITICS. THE SENATE NEEDS TO PASS THE EXTENSION BILL TO HELP THESE FAMILIES TO FINANCIALLY RECOVER ONCE AGAIN. THESE FAMILIES ARE FACING FINANCIAL RUIN BECAUSE OF THE SIX MONTH DELAY IN BENEFITS.
