Reid Reiterates He Opposes Boggs Nomination

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid reiterated Thursday that he opposes President Barack Obama’s nomination of Michael P. Boggs to be a federal judge in Georgia.

“I am going to oppose him,” the Nevada Democrat said. “He’s a person, in my opinion, not in the mainstream and I don’t think he deserves to be a federal judge.”

Reid declined to day whether he would hold a vote on Boggs’ nomination if he is approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Boggs appeared before the panel on Wednesday and disavowed many of his votes as a state legislator.

Boggs, who has been a state judge for the past 10 years, has come under fire for votes he cast as a Georgia legislator between 2001 and 2004, including a vote keep the Confederate insignia on the Georgia state flag, another to pass a Constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and a vote to keep a public registry of doctors who perform abortion.

Judiciary Committee member Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., also told reporters he’s undecided on Boggs.

“I haven’t made up my mind yet, but I have some strong doubts given the record that I have read,” he said.
