Reid Sees Hope for Unemployment Insurance Extension, but No Votes Expected for Weeks

Updated 5:09 p.m. | A bipartisan Senate unemployment extension deal has been reached but votes aren’t expected for weeks.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had said he was hopeful that a bipartisan agreement on extending unemployment benefits could be announced as soon as today — but with a Senate vote still a few weeks away.

“Progress really has been made on it,” Reid said during a press conference with the other top three Democrats. “We are really, really close to having a bipartisan bill to extend unemployment benefits for people who are in badly need of help.”

Reid said that he was hopeful that a deal could be announced “as early as today or tomorrow and we could work on it when we get back,” Reid continued. The Senate will be on recess next week.

He was reluctant to provide any details because a bipartisan group of Senators are still in negotiations. Reid did however say that measure would likely extend benefits for the long-term unemployed for five months.

The most recent Democratic proposal had sought a six-month extension that would be offset by savings from the farm bill.

Republicans have since offered a five-month extension with a variety of offsets and changes to the program.

Other business that is expected to be addressed after the weeklong recess — which is expected to begin this evening — is an aid package for Ukraine and a Democratic bill that would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, which will likely be opposed by Republicans. He added that a House-passed flood insurance bill will also likely be on the floor after the recess.

Democratic leaders also said they hope to pursue more bipartisan legislation as well, including sentencing reform proposals, a package of manufacturing bills, and energy efficiency legislation.

Pointing to the expected passage of a bipartisan child care block grant bill currently on the floor, Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said he hopes that more bipartisan bills can be passed even as Democrats seek to push through their agenda focused on addressing income inequality.

“Hopefully this recipe can be successful today and can be repeated throughout the year,” said Schumer, who leads the Democrats policy and communications arm.

Reid noted that he was pleased with recent congressional accomplishments, citing the two-year budget, the omnibus appropriations, the farm bill and the hike in the debt limit.

“That might not sound like much in the overall scheme of things, but with what’s been happening the last four years … this is progress,” Reid said.

As much as I’d like those displaced workers tk receive retro-benefits, there is sadly ZERO chance of this making law.
Neither party is willing to compromise away this divisive issue so close to mid-term elections. Campaigns thrive on negative ads..
Yes, I realize that Collins, Heller and Portman are onboard.

Let’s vote to cut congressional pay by 10%-that’s millions in savings that could be applied to paying for unemployment. Only fair to have this lazy childish congress help pay for the mess they have created for hard working citizens.

DEAR GOD you mean to tell me these people think its okay to take recess and let the unemployed go hungry for another week??!! WHAT progress is that? This should have been done WEEKS ago. I hope while on recess these people do some serious intake of what they are doing to families and CHILDREN. While your child is on spring break with you – another child is hungry or worried. Don’t think children don’t get it. Some of the unemployed who lost benefits have to explain why the lights are off, while there is no heat or why they are not sleeping in their own beds and why there is no more to eat. CHILDREN feel the stress of this situation. They see their parents worry so they worry. They see their parents cry and they hurt over it too. SHAME SHAME SHAME ON YOU! I pray not for your forgiveness for what you have done to these innocents but yet that you suffer the wrath of evil you have created, that somehow Karma makes it an even score. Remember this when there is some catastrophe in your life, your family is hurting or hungry or scared..and you question WHY??.. it’s Karma that’s WHY and you DESERVE IT!

Your absolutely right. Shame on everyone!!! How can they go on recess when this is supposedly a EMERGENCY. Wasn’t the president saying that this was going to be on top of his agenda. Why hasn’t he acted and order an executive order to by pass congress. This is why I think politics is a joke and don’t vote for any party.

Reminds me when my exhusband was taking his girlfriend on a vacation, but decided he didn’t have enough money to pay child support for that 2 weeks. We are people who will starve, die, become homeless while you senators sit by the pool drinking margaritas.

How is this critical extension not being treated with the urgency of let’s say September 11 or the missing plane? I would think that this could be treated as a true “emergency”. What’s wrong with our government that vacation and spring breaks take priority over human needs. My sincere apologies to everyone facing this yet again “continued” hardship. It’s very unnecessary and very neglectful to have such a lack of immediacy for such a harmful and life-altering crisis for so many Americans – mothers, fathers, children, landlords, grocers, gas stations, car dealers…the list goes on. Shame on all of you and you lack or concern and lack of true governing. What’s happened to our country? I’m loosing all pride in America.

A deal has been reached !!! I was reading other articles on the web at 7pm tonight., and they said deal has been reached. Still have to have the official vote after the recess. Then after that, we have to hope the House doesn’t stall it. I gotta figure though, its going to make it. The problem is timing now. They are talking about …Other business that is expected to be addressed after the weeklong recess — which is expected to begin this evening — is an aid package for Ukraine ? The Ukraine ? I mean, are they freakin kidding !!! The people in this country are desperate to save their homes and apartments. It’s bad enough we have to wait out another recess, but this is crazy.

I think we have to stop complaining (I’ve been complaining hard, believe me (unemployed as of 1/1/13)) and just start calling the senators, including Speaker Boehner. Unfortunately, nobody cares but us. I found that out by my bitching for so long on Facebook. So I think it’s up to me to add it to my already long list of things I have to do each day. I don’t like it at all, but maybe I’ll get used to it. “Okay, today I call my old friend Boehner and 2 of these senators here on this list.” I got a list from one of the comments under that article over on CBSNews from March 11. That person listed senators Rob Portman, Mark Kirk, Dan coats, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski in addition to John Boehner and Harry Reid (though why list Harry Reid when he’s already been working hard on it? — I am not sure). They listed phone numbers and the link to their e-mail form–so far I’ve sent e-mails to all of them and called John Boehner’s office in New York. Then this person also put the link to the petition to sign and a link to the PDF of the letter dated March 6th that a bunch of senators sent to John Boehner asking for the vote. Here’s that URL:

I am 36 and have worked all my life. I joined the military and ended up getting hurt in Iraq and was lucky enough to get a good job with Duke energy. I worked with them for several year getting three raises and worked until I hurt to show how proud I was of my job. After three years I had someone lie on me and I lost my job. The last six months I have been out of work and Duke still has not reviewed my information so I can return even though the person who got me fired also got fired because they saw how he was. I tried to find jobs but there is no one that will have me because I have to much training under my belt. I need a job and need it now I have three kids and a wife and I think it will be better if I take my life that way I know they will at least get help. I know many people abuse the system but my family is not one. We ate noodles for dinner and the kids split one cookie. We have spent all our savings trying to find a Doctor that can help me with the injury from Iraq since the VA is out of options. We all are scared and when I drive down the road and see a wood patch with an old building I wonder could we camp there if it gets worse.

I hope the extention, once it takes affect, will help you during this tough period. I have been there myself through-out the yrs and know how stressful it can get. Stay focused, take a break and enjoy your family once in awhile, but do not give up. My prayerful wish for you is to have a job that needs and admires what you have to offer, and that you live a fruitful life.

The battle is far from over.

Next hurdle to aiding over 2 million Americans, including over 200,00 Veterans, is Speaker John Boener (R).

After that we need to urge Congress to pass the President’s American Job Act. It’s estimated to create between 1.3 and 2 million jobs. The CBO has said it would pay for itself AND pay off 3 billion dollars in debt in 10 years.

I have to give up my place of leaving with no where to go, no money and look and apply for jobs since day one. Went on a few interviews but still nothing going on an interview here in Georgia is like going to a convection to many people applying for the same job, but you have to keep applying and looking because I am not a lazy person and I have to take-care of myself. This bill should be passed and voted on before another recess, bad weather, spring break all of the above, I wish I had a job with an income coming in where I can take a recess or a vacation or even get my teeth clean or get a physical or even be able to eat a good meal or sleep peacefully in my home where I have worked for, for years that I am loosing on March 28th, Wow! the same day that my unemployment ran out, and they get to yet again go into recess with my gas cut off, no cable no food and no gas now to put in my car, but yet again Oh! I almost for got my lights get cut off after 5:00 today because I don’t have the money to pay to keep them on and I can’t keep asking friends for help and the get to go on recess and we have to wait another 2 weeks this is not right this should be taken care of and then they go to recess knowing that they have done good and right by the people. When they seat at their table to eat, have a little extra bits for me. Maybe I will be able to fill full. :(

Since late last December, more than two million unemployed

And their children, have been without unemployment benefits,
    due to

The failure of the Republican Party to pass an unemployment
    extension bill.

After several proposals by the democrats, to get this bill
    passed in the senate,

These unemployed workers are still no closer of getting the
    financial help that

They so desperately need to provide for their families. The
    Republicans have consistently

Denied passing of the bill. These families have had to face
    evictions, home foreclosures,

Bankruptcy, and homelessness. When millions of tax payer’s
    dollars are freely given to

Finance corporate welfare, and foreign aid, nothing is given
    to these families who are

Out of work. When billions of tax payer’s dollars were used
to Bailout both the Banking and Airline industries, to name but a few, how is
can it be justified not to help the average

American family? These millions of people are angry

I just wanted to share that I had my first interview after 7 months of sending out resume’s. I shall and will not give up. I had to borrow money for gas and borrow clothes from my my 65 yr old aunt for the interview. It felt good to be going on the interview and I thank the company who is interested in me. I still put God first and thank him for everything. I know thru all this I have gotten closer to him. I wanted to let you all know that in the last book of the old testament which was Malachi God did not speak to the world for 400 yrs because he was upset with the people. Remember to keep the faith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How sad that men like John Boehner will stand in the way of the passing of the unemployment extension bill that would help the more than two million unemployed workers and their families without benefits, and the means to survive economically, while seeking employment. How can he claim to be for fiscal responsibility when millions of our tax payers dollars are going to fund corporate welfare and foreign aid? When tax payers dollars were spent on bailing out the Banking and Airline industries, amongst other companies, where was their “fiscal responsibility” and budgetary concerns then? Why is helping the average working American worker and families, not as important? I’m looking forward to the 2016 election. You will see these millions of voters show their distain and anger towards these career politicans in the voting booths.

Hi everyone here. What Christine Coleman said is very true though i may not know her. I experienced it first hand also. It was this organization called consumer loan firm (C.L.f)that really helped me to pay my medical bills when i was in dare need of money because i am a widow. A friend of my also directed me to them. when i was about to do a major operation and i had no money at that time, they came to my rescue and in less than 48 hours, i got my loan. But to say the truth, i was nervous and scared at first because i have been scammed twice. But when i summoned up courage and follow their lending policies along with my friends advice, at the end i found myself smiling. If not for them, maybe i would have been dead by now. I have even taken another loan from them start my business after my recovery which i am also paying back now. My only advice now is that any body who is really in need of loan should contact them with their email via: and get a loan from them. Thanks

Someplace within the paragraphs you were able to make me a believer but just for a while. I however have got a problem with your jumps in assumptions and you might do nicely to fill in those breaks. In the event you can accomplish that, I will certainly be fascinated.

With havin so much written content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement? My website has a lot of unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my authorization. Do you know any methods to help reduce content from being stolen? I’d genuinely appreciate it.
