Reid Sees Hope for Unemployment Insurance Extension, but No Votes Expected for Weeks

Updated 5:09 p.m. | A bipartisan Senate unemployment extension deal has been reached but votes aren’t expected for weeks.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had said he was hopeful that a bipartisan agreement on extending unemployment benefits could be announced as soon as today — but with a Senate vote still a few weeks away.

“Progress really has been made on it,” Reid said during a press conference with the other top three Democrats. “We are really, really close to having a bipartisan bill to extend unemployment benefits for people who are in badly need of help.”

Reid said that he was hopeful that a deal could be announced “as early as today or tomorrow and we could work on it when we get back,” Reid continued. The Senate will be on recess next week.

He was reluctant to provide any details because a bipartisan group of Senators are still in negotiations. Reid did however say that measure would likely extend benefits for the long-term unemployed for five months.

The most recent Democratic proposal had sought a six-month extension that would be offset by savings from the farm bill.

Republicans have since offered a five-month extension with a variety of offsets and changes to the program.

Other business that is expected to be addressed after the weeklong recess — which is expected to begin this evening — is an aid package for Ukraine and a Democratic bill that would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, which will likely be opposed by Republicans. He added that a House-passed flood insurance bill will also likely be on the floor after the recess.

Democratic leaders also said they hope to pursue more bipartisan legislation as well, including sentencing reform proposals, a package of manufacturing bills, and energy efficiency legislation.

Pointing to the expected passage of a bipartisan child care block grant bill currently on the floor, Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said he hopes that more bipartisan bills can be passed even as Democrats seek to push through their agenda focused on addressing income inequality.

“Hopefully this recipe can be successful today and can be repeated throughout the year,” said Schumer, who leads the Democrats policy and communications arm.

Reid noted that he was pleased with recent congressional accomplishments, citing the two-year budget, the omnibus appropriations, the farm bill and the hike in the debt limit.

“That might not sound like much in the overall scheme of things, but with what’s been happening the last four years … this is progress,” Reid said.

As much as I’d like those displaced workers tk receive retro-benefits, there is sadly ZERO chance of this making law.
Neither party is willing to compromise away this divisive issue so close to mid-term elections. Campaigns thrive on negative ads..
Yes, I realize that Collins, Heller and Portman are onboard.

    • Robert Simmons

All you’re doing is copying+pasting your fear tactic rhetoric all over the internet on this subject, mr porsche owner (as u brag about in ur profile).

Nobody’s buying your hate tactics. Go away.

      • PatriotVirginian1

Hello Robert, and thank you for reviewing my comments. As they are convictions I believe in, my right to post them for discussion is a 1st Amendment Right. No fear tactic intent; only in the eye of the reader where fear is already rampant. Please allow others on your internet to express themselves without your vitriolic attacks to shut down discourse. Please find peace in your life.. or at least go and drive a Porsche.. you’ll feel better inside man.

  • Joan Munn

Let’s vote to cut congressional pay by 10%-that’s millions in savings that could be applied to paying for unemployment. Only fair to have this lazy childish congress help pay for the mess they have created for hard working citizens.

    • Rachel

10%??? My, you are generous! They will be working only 113 days this year. Their salaries should be cut in HALF and their Cadillac benefits cut significantly.

  • NYGIRL

DEAR GOD you mean to tell me these people think its okay to take recess and let the unemployed go hungry for another week??!! WHAT progress is that? This should have been done WEEKS ago. I hope while on recess these people do some serious intake of what they are doing to families and CHILDREN. While your child is on spring break with you – another child is hungry or worried. Don’t think children don’t get it. Some of the unemployed who lost benefits have to explain why the lights are off, while there is no heat or why they are not sleeping in their own beds and why there is no more to eat. CHILDREN feel the stress of this situation. They see their parents worry so they worry. They see their parents cry and they hurt over it too. SHAME SHAME SHAME ON YOU! I pray not for your forgiveness for what you have done to these innocents but yet that you suffer the wrath of evil you have created, that somehow Karma makes it an even score. Remember this when there is some catastrophe in your life, your family is hurting or hungry or scared..and you question WHY??.. it’s Karma that’s WHY and you DESERVE IT!

    • Kdie

Your absolutely right. Shame on everyone!!! How can they go on recess when this is supposedly a EMERGENCY. Wasn’t the president saying that this was going to be on top of his agenda. Why hasn’t he acted and order an executive order to by pass congress. This is why I think politics is a joke and don’t vote for any party.

      • roro

Obama cant go tru congress on this issue I believe, which is why he isn’t saying much anymore about it,something about the constitution or something I agree the president should overrule everybody

    • Rachel

Yep. It is perfectly fine with them. You are surprised by this?

    • Ralph

The only intake these people are going to take in is the sun rays when they are laying in the sand at their beach homes

  • NYGIRL

I see people saying they will no longer vote… PLEASE!! This has to change.. EVERYONE needs to VOTE and make changes to the people in charge right now. VOTE FOR CHANGE! Let’s make sure these heartless and lazy procrastinating people get voted out and we get some change in government. PEOPLE WHO CARE!

    • Rachel

Don’t be naive! It is the electorate that determines who stays in power – not the peoples vote.

      • claire

maybe my math isn’t that good, but you sure want to pick out my mistakes if your so perfect why don’t you have a job

      • claire

not necessarily,,,,,,,,its the money that buys the electoral vote……. how do you think certain states have so many electoral votes like California big money in Cali

  • rose

Can we take away the food and money they will need while on “vacation”? Hey do you think the senators could loan me some cash to pay my bills and to buy food while they go on vacation?
Reminds me when my exhusband was taking his girlfriend on a vacation, but decided he didn’t have enough money to pay child support for that 2 weeks. We are people who will starve, die, become homeless while you senators sit by the pool drinking margaritas.
Hope these senators are not up for reelection, I will vote for only new people, anybody in the senate or house will be voted against, even if I’m writing my own name in.

    • claire

I am right with you Rose

  • God child

Rich people do not feel what we feel so they really have no idea that we have hit rock bottom. I just keep praying God please help us. Keep your head up people and just have a little more faith. I know it’s easier said then done but what else can we do. I will not give up even though I have lost everything I had. I know God will restore all.

    • Rachel

I am sorry your “God” has allowed you to lose everything you have. Not a very nice God.

      • God child

Rachel, I was not going to respond to your comment but I had to let you know and understand that my God the God I serve has taught me to know that all of those things I lost were just things and I can have even more WHEN I GET A JOB..

  • Julie Serna

Yes, they get vacation while the unemployed get further in debt because they can’t pay their bills, rent, mortgage, utilities. Let them walk a day in my shoes wondering how they will pay their bills this month, while being unemployed 9 months, 18 job interviews, and still no job.

  • Ralph

Vote for democrates they seem to care for the unempolyed people vote
    Republicans out off office

    • Mario

Screw the republicans they screw us, democrats do care, the reason Obama is getting a bad rep is because of bush’s f ups

      • Ralph

Mario this is what happens when you try to control the whole world , just like what happen to the Romans . People just can’t live under one Government . The government just want you to work like a class of insects .Stamp in stamp out , make the rich richer ,no need for smart people stupid one are easy to control.

        • Mario

When they have more money then brain’s, the poor just get crapped on

  • Ralph

They take more time off then they work I wash I had a job like that it would be nice if I could that with my job

  • Sherry Plutakis

How is this critical extension not being treated with the urgency of let’s say September 11 or the missing plane? I would think that this could be treated as a true “emergency”. What’s wrong with our government that vacation and spring breaks take priority over human needs. My sincere apologies to everyone facing this yet again “continued” hardship. It’s very unnecessary and very neglectful to have such a lack of immediacy for such a harmful and life-altering crisis for so many Americans – mothers, fathers, children, landlords, grocers, gas stations, car dealers…the list goes on. Shame on all of you and you lack or concern and lack of true governing. What’s happened to our country? I’m loosing all pride in America.

    • Rachel

You can’t shame sociopaths whose primary goals are power and money. When you are a big corporation who can hire lobbyists on your behalf, then you will have a chance with these corrupt assholes.

  • Alcides Acevedo

Sad I lost my car and I still have to beg the landlord for more time but happy i would b able to pay bills n have money for the bus to find work n go to work!!!!!! Stay positive my people everything will get better!!!! God bless n please keep the rude comments away!!!!!

  • REDJI

Harry: Better keep the low-information types on the voting rolls….It would be a disaster to have them find out that you and the Administration are the ones responsible for the lack of jobs, now wouldn’t it? Keep ‘em down on the Plantation where they keep quiet and vote for the Progressives, right? You sad little man…..

  • Rick

A deal has been reached !!! I was reading other articles on the web at 7pm tonight., and they said deal has been reached. Still have to have the official vote after the recess. Then after that, we have to hope the House doesn’t stall it. I gotta figure though, its going to make it. The problem is timing now. They are talking about …Other business that is expected to be addressed after the weeklong recess — which is expected to begin this evening — is an aid package for Ukraine ? The Ukraine ? I mean, are they freakin kidding !!! The people in this country are desperate to save their homes and apartments. It’s bad enough we have to wait out another recess, but this is crazy.

    • Rachel

      It is corrupt.

    • charlene

I know this is terrible how are we supposed to surrive?

  • Indy

I applaud this step in the right direction. But how do you go on recess knowing that people can’t afford food, heat, electricity? Every week that goes by is THE week that someone’s house goes into foreclosure, or car gets repossessed. This is urgent!

  • NatBe

I think we have to stop complaining (I’ve been complaining hard, believe me (unemployed as of 1/1/13)) and just start calling the senators, including Speaker Boehner. Unfortunately, nobody cares but us. I found that out by my bitching for so long on Facebook. So I think it’s up to me to add it to my already long list of things I have to do each day. I don’t like it at all, but maybe I’ll get used to it. “Okay, today I call my old friend Boehner and 2 of these senators here on this list.” I got a list from one of the comments under that article over on CBSNews from March 11. That person listed senators Rob Portman, Mark Kirk, Dan coats, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski in addition to John Boehner and Harry Reid (though why list Harry Reid when he’s already been working hard on it? — I am not sure). They listed phone numbers and the link to their e-mail form–so far I’ve sent e-mails to all of them and called John Boehner’s office in New York. Then this person also put the link to the petition to sign http://wh.gov/lm4Es and a link to the PDF of the letter dated March 6th that a bunch of senators sent to John Boehner asking for the vote. Here’s that URL: http://nolan.house.gov/sites/nolan.house.gov/files/Veterans_Unemployment_Insurance_Letter_030614.pdf

  • Chuckawobbly

Well this is fine if it does pass and that’s good but since this is retroactive going back to December, what happens when the benefits run out AGAIN in May or June? There will still be millions of people unemployed!

    • REDJI

It’s high time the population realized that the Democrats are the ones who are killing jobs in this Country….I say don’t extent benefits, wean them off the Plantation, let them start voting for the people who want to create jobs……

    • Rachel

Because Congress is dumb, they are incapable of thinking ahead.

  • jasoncsprings

I am 36 and have worked all my life. I joined the military and ended up getting hurt in Iraq and was lucky enough to get a good job with Duke energy. I worked with them for several year getting three raises and worked until I hurt to show how proud I was of my job. After three years I had someone lie on me and I lost my job. The last six months I have been out of work and Duke still has not reviewed my information so I can return even though the person who got me fired also got fired because they saw how he was. I tried to find jobs but there is no one that will have me because I have to much training under my belt. I need a job and need it now I have three kids and a wife and I think it will be better if I take my life that way I know they will at least get help. I know many people abuse the system but my family is not one. We ate noodles for dinner and the kids split one cookie. We have spent all our savings trying to find a Doctor that can help me with the injury from Iraq since the VA is out of options. We all are scared and when I drive down the road and see a wood patch with an old building I wonder could we camp there if it gets worse.

    • D Linsky

Of course you and your family are not abusing the system.Never feel you have to make an excuse for asklng for help. I hope the extention, once it takes affect, will help you during this tough period. I have been there myself through-out the yrs and know how stressful it can get. Stay focused, take a break and enjoy your family once in awhile, but do not give up. My prayerful wish for you is to have a job that needs and admires what you have to offer, and that you live a fruitful life.

      • Icare

I concur… well said, you have great heart!!!

    • Rachel

No, taking your life won’t help anyone. You would only be causing more pain for your kids. Why aren’t you going to food banks? What do you mean, the VA is out of options?

  • mrmano_0

The battle is far from over.

Next hurdle to aiding over 2 million Americans, including over 200,00 Veterans, is Speaker John Boener (R).
    http://boehner.house.gov/

After that we need to urge Congress to pass the President’s American Job Act. It’s estimated to create between 1.3 and 2 million jobs. The CBO has said it would pay for itself AND pay off 3 billion dollars in debt in 10 years.

  • Martha Richardson-Adamson

I have to give up my place of leaving with no where to go, no money and look and apply for jobs since day one. Went on a few interviews but still nothing going on an interview here in Georgia is like going to a convection to many people applying for the same job, but you have to keep applying and looking because I am not a lazy person and I have to take-care of myself. This bill should be passed and voted on before another recess, bad weather, spring break all of the above, I wish I had a job with an income coming in where I can take a recess or a vacation or even get my teeth clean or get a physical or even be able to eat a good meal or sleep peacefully in my home where I have worked for, for years that I am loosing on March 28th, Wow! the same day that my unemployment ran out, and they get to yet again go into recess with my gas cut off, no cable no food and no gas now to put in my car, but yet again Oh! I almost for got my lights get cut off after 5:00 today because I don’t have the money to pay to keep them on and I can’t keep asking friends for help and the get to go on recess and we have to wait another 2 weeks this is not right this should be taken care of and then they go to recess knowing that they have done good and right by the people. When they seat at their table to eat, have a little extra bits for me. Maybe I will be able to fill full. :(

    • roro

this is so sad, I am in ny I am on dss live in a group home with many men still ok better then nothing I have f stamps and med and small cash asst, appled for small soc security since im 62,have seasonal job at a racetracks as needed onlyn big days usually

    • Rachel

      You didn’t have savings??

      • Feed up American

Rachel…..go to hell! You are a witch who loves making people feel bad just to make yourself feel better. Hope you lose everything! You deserve to be hungry, homeless, disabled or worse!
People like you would NEVER have the balls to talk like this to people face to face. You hide behind your computer and bully!

Go back to the hole you crawled out of!

  • Nick C

Shame on them. They think it is OK to take another recess while millions of Americans can’t afford food or pay their rent. They keep talking progress, but nothing gets done. If they need to cut the budget somewhere, why not foreign aide??????? or cut the congressional pay. After all they spend the majority of their time on vacation.

    • Rachel

That’s right. Delve further into how much $$ has been wasted, lost, given to corrupt contractors over the past 12 years and you will see how bad it really is.

  • GreatBirdUSA

Perhaps an extension of 5 months..?
Even if you were already on the Fed extension
for several months before it ended.?
i.e. – 5 months in addition to what you collected prior to stopping.?
    Anyone have any idea..?

  • claire

I can’t believe their working on an AID PACKET another country,,and 13% of this country needs unemployment extension NOW WTF

    • Rachel

13%? 2million of 314million is NOT 13%. I hope in your next job you won’t be required to do any math!

      • Feed up American

        Rachel really! Nasty mean girl!

  • Jurzygirl

ANOTHER 10 DAY RECESS??? Why is it that every time we turn around these Senators are on A BREAK? Didn’t they Just re-convene a week ago from ANOTHER FIVE DAY BREAK? How much work do they actually get done? It seems that the level of care for the people who put them in office, is ZERO. SHAME on them, folks are suffering, here in these United States and they’re talking about Aid packet for the Ukraine? This just doesn’t make any sense.

    • DisgustedInMichigan

As unfortunate as it is that they are taking their sweet time to address this issue of urgency— they are also required to spend X number hrs. In their region/state of constituency. Yet you would think they could just pass into hands of the House to make an Executive decision! I have to wonder the real definition / purpose of an Executive decision /order

    • Rachel

It makes sense if you follow how corrupt this government really is. You are surprised because now it is effecting you.

  • Tam Hawkins

its sad , how they are doing the unemployed, wonder how they would feel if they were in the unemployment line. waiting for 3 months for unemployment.

  • DisgustedInMichigan

Senate , House, GOP, President of the United States of America!! Does it matter who SAVES THE DAY for the Americans who are suffering??? YEs, it might be to little to much to late for some as their lives has slowly but surely self districted–+. Utilities shut off, phone service cut off, eviction notices, etc…..& of no help for the ones who have been successful in becoming gainfully employed…. But there are still Millions who need help yesterday, last week or month ago!! WhilebI appreciate the effort & progress made—- it is clear that this has NOT BEEN A PRIORITY!!!! I can not Wait to VOTE & WILL MAKE VOTING A PRIORITY!!

  • DisgustedInMichigan

President Bush would have had this resolved by NOW!!!!

  • DisgustedInMichigan

And WHY??? I must ask..… Why haven’t the Individual States notstepped up to intervene and help their Constituence??? What is Michigan or any other State doing to help their Unemployed??? Snyder, Benishak, Levin, Stebanow..????? All of you have been pretty quiet on the subject! How soon can I change my VOTES?!!

  • DisgustedInMichigan

Yahoo Michigan’s Dan Banishak big priority saving Black bear Dunes??? So hapoyb that was his big PRIORITY for the last Month??? And NOT A WORD of HELPING or reaching out to then100,000 Michiganders affected by their unemployment benefits. Cool Man!

  • Joey and Starving Son

Welcome to the new 3rd World Country The United States Of Bullshit!!!!!!!!! and all its Senators, Congressman and last but not Least President Bullshit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • YONATAN C

Since late last December, more than two million unemployed
    workers,

And their children, have been without unemployment benefits,
    due to

The failure of the Republican Party to pass an unemployment
    extension bill.

After several proposals by the democrats, to get this bill
    passed in the senate,

These unemployed workers are still no closer of getting the
    financial help that

They so desperately need to provide for their families. The
    Republicans have consistently

Denied passing of the bill. These families have had to face
    evictions, home foreclosures,

Bankruptcy, and homelessness. When millions of tax payer’s
    dollars are freely given to

Finance corporate welfare, and foreign aid, nothing is given
    to these families who are

Out of work. When billions of tax payer’s dollars were used
to Bailout both the Banking and Airline industries, to name but a few, how is
can it be justified not to help the average

American family? These millions of people are angry
and will voice their anger in the 2016 election with their vote. These families
    will not forget their struggles

  • http://calgarystatefarm.com/ Calgarystatefarm

If the need is there than why delay?

  • God child

I just wanted to share that I had my first interview after 7 months of sending out resume’s. I shall and will not give up. I had to borrow money for gas and borrow clothes from my my 65 yr old aunt for the interview. It felt good to be going on the interview and I thank the company who is interested in me. I still put God first and thank him for everything. I know thru all this I have gotten closer to him. I wanted to let you all know that in the last book of the old testament which was Malachi God did not speak to the world for 400 yrs because he was upset with the people. Remember to keep the faith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chuckawobbly

Yeah, by the time they pass the extension, if they do, it will be needed again for everyone else until the end of the year.

  • YONATAN C

How sad that men like John Boehner will stand in the way of the passing of the unemployment extension bill that would help the more than two million unemployed workers and their families without benefits, and the means to survive economically, while seeking employment. How can he claim to be for fiscal responsibility when millions of our tax payers dollars are going to fund corporate welfare and foreign aid? When tax payers dollars were spent on bailing out the Banking and Airline industries, amongst other companies, where was their “fiscal responsibility” and budgetary concerns then? Why is helping the average working American worker and families, not as important? I’m looking forward to the 2016 election. You will see these millions of voters show their distain and anger towards these career politicans in the voting booths.

  • Ralph

The rich people don’t want smart educated people they want more poor people because they are easyer to control, and all they have to do is offer more government programs , that’s why they keep bring more poor uneducated people to this country

  • Ralph

What’s the different from a government official repersentive and a working person ? They get to screw you all the time and say it’s official business.

  • lara

Hi everyone here. What Christine Coleman said is very true though i may not know her. I experienced it first hand also. It was this organization called consumer loan firm (C.L.f)that really helped me to pay my medical bills when i was in dare need of money because i am a widow. A friend of my also directed me to them. when i was about to do a major operation and i had no money at that time, they came to my rescue and in less than 48 hours, i got my loan. But to say the truth, i was nervous and scared at first because i have been scammed twice. But when i summoned up courage and follow their lending policies along with my friends advice, at the end i found myself smiling. If not for them, maybe i would have been dead by now. I have even taken another loan from them start my business after my recovery which i am also paying back now. My only advice now is that any body who is really in need of loan should contact them with their email via: consumerloanfirm@gmail.com and get a loan from them. Thanks
