Senate Fails To Pass Border Supplemental (Video)

Updated 7:56 p.m. | The Senate failed to pass a $3.6 billion emergency supplemental spending package, most of which was designed to deal with the tens of thousands children illegally emigrating from Central America.

Hours after House GOP leaders had to pull their own $659 million bill, Republicans used a budget point of order by Senate Budget Chairman Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., to kill the Senate bill on a 50-44 vote, 10 votes shy of the 60 votes needed.

The GOP opposed the proposal, written by Democrats, in part because they were blocked by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., from offering amendments, including an attempt by Sessions to prohibit President Barack Obama from issuing a new executive order Sessions has labeled “administrative amnesty.”

Republicans also opposed it because it did not change a 2008 trafficking law to expedite deportations of child migrants.

The bill also included $225 million for Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system and $615 million for wildfire suppression.

Reid sought unanimous consent to move the Israel funding on its own. But Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., followed through on his threat to object because it would add to the deficit.

Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, also objected to Reid’s requests to pass the wildfire funding and the wildfire and Israel funding together.

House Republicans, meanwhile, plan to regroup Friday and try again to pass their bill.

Jeff Sessions, thankfully, is not Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.

    Jeff is the MAN!!!!

  • Forums4Justice

thanks Jeff .. good job … if illegal immigrants couldn’t get a job, or collect entitlements, they wouldn’t be here

  • Daniel Ward

    Go Jeff go!
Someone needs to get Boehner in line too!

  • Layla

Borders are still wide open, even if it passes. Vote out ANY MEMBER who supports amnesty in any form. You break the law, you do NOT RECEIVE citizenship to this country. You get a plane ticket home.

Seal the borders, or be voted out of office in November.

Jeff Sessions needs to leave the GOP and create his new Know Nothing nativist party. There he can be as protectionist as he wants and support Internet sales taxes.

Samuel: I bet you could still make a living if you paid your sweatshop workers a living wage.

Why can’t the Dems figure out the same thing we working class Americans have always known when making out our household budgets: When you run out of money you STOP BUYING THINGS, take a hard look and CUT EXPENSES, even if it hurts, until ends can meet. I guess not enough of them have ever had a blue-collar job and had to worry about reality. Good job, Senator Sessions. It’s tough and some choices hurt (like I know you’d love to help Israel, but if the money isn’t there, then it’s not feasible). Thanks and keep up the great work!

They do not run out of money like families do. They are the ones who have the authority to print US dollars in unlimited quantities.

Great news. Jeff Sessions for President. Let’s get the sweatshop lobby and their leftist lapdogs out of the White House!

  • GameTime

So Democrats can’t get anything done in the Senate, either? Hmm.
