Unemployment Benefits Extension Could Be Delayed Months, Even if Congress Acts Now (Updated)

Updated 4:49 p.m. | State unemployment officials are warning Senate leaders that the emergency unemployment benefits extension expected to come up for votes as soon as next week could face months of delays before checks go to the unemployed — perhaps even beyond the June 1 expiration date set in the bill.

The National Association of State Workforce Agencies warns that the retroactive legislation would be hard to implement, particularly while complying with new requirements — including means-testing so that million-dollar earners do not get checks — in the bill. Most states have warned it would take one to three months to implement the bill, the association said.

Some states may choose to opt out of the extension because of the administrative burden, the association said while warning that there could be a “large number” of overpayments due to the retroactive nature of the legislation.

Implementing the “work search” requirement in the bill retroactively would also be “virtually impossible,” the association said.

Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio cited the letter in his own statement Wednesday, saying it showed the Senate bill was “simply unworkable” and failed to meet his test that it be fiscally responsible and help create more jobs.

But top Senate Republican sponsor of the bill, Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada, suggested the complaints were simply the latest “excuse” to deny benefits.

CQ quoted House and Senate GOP aides yesterday ($) questioning whether the retroactive proposal was simply unworkable.

Here’s the association’s full letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.:

The National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) has concerns with S. 2148, the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2014. This legislation would temporarily reauthorize the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program until June 1, 2014, but would substantially increase the administrative burden on states.

NASWA does not have a position on whether to extend the EUC program because our member states hold varying positions on that question. However, NASWA wants you to know states have significant concerns about the implementation of this legislation.

The requirements in S. 2148 would cause considerable delays in the implementation of the program and increased administrative issues and costs. Some states have indicated they might decide such changes are not feasible in the short time available, and therefore would consider not signing the U.S. Department of Labor’s agreement to operate the program.

A majority of states have said implementing the proposed legislation could take from one to three months. These delays would be due to a number of issues including:

1. Most states are struggling with antiquated and rigid computer systems — averaging 25 years old — thus making it very hard to implement program changes quickly and effectively.

2. The legislation is not clear on how states would pay for the administration of their EUC claims process if federal funds cannot be spent to determine an individual’s eligibility.

3. The “millionaire provision” would be very hard to administer. The UI system is not means-tested and therefore does not collect information on an individual’s adjusted gross income. Screening individuals by reported quarterly UI covered wages, rather than income tax information, would be a more feasible approach.

4. The backdating of EUC claims to December 29, 2013, would make it nearly impossible, in many cases, to apply a state’s weekly work search requirement, a key factor to determine eligibility for UI benefits and to avoid improper payments to claimants who are ineligible.

We appreciate your attention to this important issue. A fact sheet providing further details is attached. Please contact NASWA’s Executive Director Rich Hobbie on 202.434.8022 if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Mark Henry

NASWA FACT SHEET

The National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) is concerned with S. 2148, Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2014 extending the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program.

States indicate it could take from one to three months to implement the required elements in S. 2148. Last year, there were only 19 states able to implement the EUC FY 2013 sequestration benefit reductions within four weeks. Many states would not have the necessary changes to their State UI laws in place before the five-month EUC extension would expire.

The legislation would extend the EUC program to May 31, 2014, and would require states to backdate all EUC claims that would have been paid between December 29, 2013 and the date of enactment. NASWA’s concerns include:

Implementation: States would have to review each actual or potential claim, back to the week of December 29th. Some states would have to establish a manual process for paper applications and weekly claims since their computer systems are unable to handle such nuances.

Retroactive Weeks: When multiple weeks are paid at the same time, claimants who exhausted an EUC tier during that period would have to be redetermined and a new claim would have to be submitted for payment once new tiers are established. It would be very challenging to identify these claimants, and then administer the proper payments, due to the complexity of the review process and the potential volume of claims to review.

Overpayments: There may be a large number of EUC overpayments created by retroactively paying claims.

Tiers: Determining the correct EUC tier could be challenging as many states have seen their monthly total unemployment rate decline. This could lead to a State that would have been in Tier 3 through March having to undertake a complex reprogramming effort to have only Tier 1 and Tier 2 available in April and May.

State Law: States would not have the necessary conforming changes to their State UI laws in place before the five-month EUC extension would expire since many state legislatures cannot act quickly and some have already completed their sessions this year.

Work Search: Gaining appropriate information to manage the work search requirement for the retroactive period would be virtually impossible. Claimants would be asked to verify they searched for work when there was no requirement to do so. Even if claimants attested to the fact they looked for work, they would have to do that on a week to week basis and the states would have no ability to verify such claims. The legislation would have to release states from this requirement or the potential for improper payments would be enormous. Under current state law, claimants must verify they were able to work, available for work, and actively seeking work during that time period.

The legislation would require states to deny EUC benefits to individuals who attest to their adjusted gross income, but the attestations could be audited by USDOL and GAO. However, no Federal funds could be spent for determining an individual’s eligibility. NASWA’s concerns and questions include:

Information Gathering: States would have to create either a manual or automatic process to capture adjusted gross income information during the EUC initial claim process. If a formal certification method is required by USDOL, time delays would occur to properly implement the certification process.

IRS Database: This provision seems to suggest each claim would need to be cross-checked against the IRS database (which may or may not be available) or the state would have to obtain income tax returns from the claimants. The verification would take months to implement and cause extensive and costly programming.

Funding: States would find it very difficult to pay for this function from current UI administrative funding. Some states might decide not to implement the program due to lack of federal administrative funding.

The legislation would impact current information technology (IT) projects. This legislation is emerging at a time when states already have a very full schedule of IT projects for the permanent unemployment insurance program and as a result state IT staffs are committed to this work. Reassigning IT staff could derail progress on such efforts and potentially increase improper payments.

Some states might decide not to enter into an agreement with USDOL to extend the EUC program in 2014 because of the implementation concerns listed above. A state’s relatively low total unemployment rate also might factor into the Governor’s decision.

  • Bill Walty

if all these employees used to do EUC benefits then what have they been working on now? does this letter mean our States employees actually have to work for once, instead at moving at a snails pace like all the other State employees us taxpayers pay for including Law Enforcement, Dept. of licensing and Social. Oh I forgot all the Governor, Mayors, State reps and the list keeps going…

  • voltaic

Leave it to Congress to screw up something that is so important to millions of struggling jobless. They make it so cumbersome that states will decide not to extend benefits! You almost think that the @gop senate made this bill so cumbersome because they wanted to show support for the unemployed but the same time they knew it wouldn’t be workable. The GOP never wanted a law that helped the unemployed, they just wanted it to look that way.

    • GetBentGOP

Like Boehner said on Friday, “You mean the one that can’t be impemented?” when asked about the new proposal. That useless devil knew it all along.

      • Andy Boley

Boehner is the problem here! Instead of telling people it will not work, find a solution to where this will work. What do you think is paying your salary Mr. Boehner! THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER! The same people who need their unemployment extensions!

    • Rich Hutnik

Of course the GOP doesn’t want it. Have you see any House Republicans coming up with a way to pay for the extension? They haven’t overall. See, such is viewed as “welfare” and making people lazy bums. Only the threat of an empty plate, and starvation gets people to take work. And that last bit was said in response to myself asking how people remain motivated to keep looking for work, unless paid to do so.

      • voltaic

I agree. The sad part is that there are more than 15 millions unemployed and only 4 million job openings. Even if EVERY job was filled, there would still be more than 10 million unemployed. Another egregious thing the GOP is doing is ending unemployment benefits for 200,000 veterans. GOP sends them to needless wars and then abandons them when they come home needing a job.

    • Unemployment S.2148

The government left marriage up to the states and I don’t expect government to do the right thing with unemployment. It a real sad shame that so many of us are going to be hurt by them.

    • Icare

The Republican Party, also commonly called the GOP for “Grand Old Party”
is really having a Grand Old Party with our tax dollars at the expense
of our livelihood! Write to your state reps and call for immediate
impeachment proceedings to fire Bone Head John A. Boehner NOW!!! You
don’t have to wait for mid-term elections!

    • Andy Boley

If they didnt let this Unemployment extension expire on December 28, 2013. They wouldnt be in this mess, now would they??

    • http://www.unimundotv.com Unimundo

You are exactly correct. That is why they need to get fired.

We Bring you the World at Unimundo

    • Rachel

No, that letter is BS. It was written by a former GOP…google the guy who wrote it.

  • mikmor

They are getting more and more creative in keeping help from the people. This is getting sick.

  • God child

this is not the first time this has happened so how did was it taking care of the first times. In Georgia they tell us to still certify and do our job search so they will not have any problems if they decide to extend benefits.

    • Lindsay Ryan

You are very lucky! I live in sucky Florida and they tell us that we can’t log it anymore, that “if” this gets passed then that’s when we can go in and log it from our personal log. So as usual, it will be a long anticipated mess

  • Kevin Parker

This is stupid! People are hurting right now and losing everything they own, so how can these people delay this any further?

    • voltaic

The GOP reps have a nice taxpayer funded salary and benefits that allows them to work less than 1/2 the year. They don’t have any concept of the struggling millions of jobless. They think that ending benefits ends the problem. They have an economic policy of feed the rich and starve the poor. They care not for the unemployed…..

      • Kevin Parker

I think that they all should be fired with no pension. Maybe after a healthy dose of humble pie they would rethink life!

      • ricky747

I have lost all that I had. I am 59 yrs old and have nothing to show for my life left. I can’t even afford to go to the Dr. I have tried to find work and no one wants to hire a 59 yr. old woman. I guess we are too close to retirement and they don’t want to train and lose us in a few years. I do know that all the senate and congress can go to hell and burn for what they have done to the American people.

      • Hopeful

I AM SO SORRY THAT YOU HAVE HAD TO ENDURE THIS. YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS.

    • Sebastian Klay

you’re going to be hurting more if you don’t take charge of your life and quit waiting on the govt to take care of you

      • Kevin Parker

First off I AM working and second off people need the help now. Over 2 million people are out of work and the type of employment that is available sucks! You need to realize this is a bigger problem than just giving people money. Due to jobs leaving the country and technology it takes less people to do jobs, and in addition a yearly influx of college grads competing for those jobs. So Sebastian, or Marcus, or whatever you call yourself learn to offer solutions or just shut up!

THAT HE IS THROWING THE DEMOCRATS A BONE AND BETRAYING HIS OWN PARTY TAKING AMERICANS HOSTAGE OVER THE UI Extension! He’s helping OBAMA stay in Power so BIG GOVERNMENT WINS AGAINST US AGAIN!

  • Devin Greene

This is ridiculous people with children that depend on there (euc) to live day to day are put in a position because the economy is terrible and jobs are limited cant support them. But the congress members are sitting in a position where there kids or love ones will never see a hardship yet they hold peoples livelihood in the palms of there hands. People that work thier whole lives and need help just to get back to a comfortable state unlike the people who never work but get assistance such as welfare and dssi are living better that people that contribute to bettering the economy….but yet this is the greatest country in the world but it wouldnt be great without the peopl they are now denying help too.

  • 86theRepublicans

This is BS, if it isn’t one thing then it is another. It is just another excuse to not extend the benefits. Don’t give us these lame excuses. It can be done, and it needs to be done. Figure it out and do it!

    • Andy Boley

They would rather give 1 BILLION DOLLARS to Ukraine while leaving millions of Americans in the dark. Thanks to John Boehner!!!

  • 86theRepublicans

Read this below. How were they able to do it back then?

    Reminder:
In order to stimulate the economy, during George W. Bush’s presidency, the
federal government sent out direct payments to all taxpayers three times (2001,
    2003 and 2008).

    The 2008 payments were
between $300 and $1200 per household and cost more than $100 billion.

    More fun facts about
    the 2008 rebates:

    - No one demanded that
they be paid for, or that there be corresponding cuts to other federal
    programs.

    - The program passed
with overwhelming bipartisan support: 81 to 16 in the Senate, 380 to 34 in the
House. There was no filibuster, and among the bill’s supporters were John
    Boehner and Greg Walden.

    - The total time from
the bill’s introduction, through passage in both houses, to being signed by the
    President was 16 days..

    - The unemployment rate
at the time of passage was 4.9%. (The current rate is 6.7%.)

No one in 2008, so far
as I can find, was called a “taker” or “lazy” or accused of
wanting a “government handout” because they cashed their check.

    • Beau D

Proves my point- OBAMA REQUESTED THAT THE UNEMPLOYMENT ISSUE BE RESOLVED DURING HIS PRESIDENTIAL SPEECH BACK IN JANUARY. Whats happened? The vote passed for unemployment but the bills get negated left and right..why? BECAUSE GOP WANTS THIS LANGUAGE AND THAT LANGUAGE..BLAH BLAH BLAH. Like really? You want but the needs of the many outweigh the few?

    • Rich Hutnik

I do recall they were calling for the use of TARP funds to pay for it, but they proceeded anyway.

    • mikmor

Those were sold to the people as rebates, but had to be paid back at tax time. I got nothing.

  • Bob Viering

How convenient…I wonder how many of the members of this association are from Republican states? I seriously doubt these people would have any trouble implementing a pay raise for themselves. Typical Republican obstruction. They can’t win legislatively so they do everything to delay and kill through partisan bureaucracy.

Anyone who cares about helping the unemployed better get off their behinds and vote this fall. If you don’t you can count on many more years of obstruction and cuts.

  • Unemployment OWL

Sorry to say if they mess with that unemployment EUC money I bet these politicians are going to meet a couple of lunatics.

    • Hopeful

YES, PEOPLE ARE GETTING VERY ANGRY AND SOON THEY WILL BE GETTING VERY DESPERATE BECAUSE THEY FEEL THAT THEY HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN BY THE VERY PEOPLE THEY VOTED FOR. THIS CAN GET REAL UGLY SOON.

  • Beau D

THIS IS THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE…WE CAN RALLY..WE CAN REVOLT..WE CAN CAUSE AN UPRISING, THROW ENOUGH PISSED OFF PEOPLE IN A CORNER AND YOU GOT YOURSELF A PROBLEM THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED HAD YOU DONE YOUR JOBS!!! ONE OTHER THING YOU MANAGE TO PUT THE UKRAINIAN BILL IN LIKE IT WAS A SWEEPSTAKES BUT YOU CANT MANAGE TO TAKE CARE OF WHATS REALLY IMPORTANT IN OUR OWN COUNTRY?!!!?! • Beau D

They are owed. If you were ever in the union you’d understand what retroactive DEFAULT payment is about and how it works. This entire UNEMPLOYMENT situation is almost no different minus the fact it may not be a union but it may as well be because WE are the people that are being paid out BY CONTRACT of the US g’ment in FEDERAL LAW. Mind you the policy makers KNEW that they had to take care of a DEC 28TH deadline BEFORE November, they fumbled and allowed people to go without benefits during, on and around Christmas as well NEW YEARS. So you tell me something if you were one of the people who was claiming money, paid your last months worth of rent and food you wouldnt be upset for the g’ments responsibility into trying to help you when the program was enacted to help individuals in these situations? 3 months later you’re sucking on bread and water, no television, cell phone or nothing because you had no fault of losing your job which the benefits helped you pay for the necessities that you need, had, have and required to do the things you need to fill in an obligation to get another job. So keep trolling and talking smack…I wouldnt be surprised if you were John Boehner either. Toodles!

        • Sebastian Klay

you’re not owed a living or a job otherwise you’d have a guaranteed one you people are getting dumber by the day.

          • Beau D

They are owed. See the part about getting fired through no fault of your own. Its also no fault of their own that the gment defaulted on Dec 28th. Look at the statistics of amount of unemployed plus the amount of people who recently filed then are going to exhaust their benefits because THERE is no FEDERAL EMERGENCY benefits. MILLIONS of people…MILLIONS we arent talking about a short list of people we’re talking millions. If you’re one of the ignorant people who has no understanding of the ENTIRE core of the situation. You need to buzz off and troll on facebook/twitter.

Unfortunately, in case you were not aware, there is now something they passed in a particular clause in the NDAA which allows the Federal Gov. to indefinitely detain (imprison) any of us for no reason what-so-ever with no trial/no due process. Yes, we can rally and revolt. In fact that is the only way. Just don’t think for a minute that we have the rights we used to have and expect to be thrown in prison.

      • Erik

FORWARD TO REVOLUTION AND REVOLT !!!!!!!!

      • wsucram15

I am aware Rachel..there is a phrase a friend of mine sent me which sent shivers down my spine when I read it. “The best way to take control over a people and control them utterly is
to take a little of their freedom at a time, to erode rights by a
thousand tiny and almost imperceptible reductions. In this way, the
people will not see those rights and freedoms being removed until past
the point at which these changes cannot be reversed.”

I cant post who said this or the site wont let me post this. But this appears to be what has happened. Im still checking on the law though..there is always a way. This is the way the laws are designed.

    • wsucram15

You know I had a thought..checking this out..but are we all equal under the US Constitution? Why then, were Federal employees paid for their back wages and private sector employees are not..both were out of their control and both were at the mercy of Congress and the economy.

Beau D – I agree with you completely – This legislation has been paid for since day 1 – People like myself – who have been working for 35 years straight without any claims or “Assistance” are in the cold – The way this country legislates is pathetic – both sides – things are reaching a boiling point … the legislative branch of this government is severely broken ..

      • Beau D

i researched the unemployment extensions that were provided in the past and they did so without a hiccup even with the obama administration in recent years. So now ALL OF THE SUDDEN it becomes an issue? It sickens me that it becomes political, the President should be telling Congress: Dont come to the proper resolution soon…you just might end up washing dishes in the white house!

        • FedUpInNJ

It was extended 5 times under Bush

          • Rodrell Green

It clearly has nothing to do with the president, as he is waiting to approve it like the rest of his fellow Democrats. Republicans are playing games to prey on weak minded individuals who think everything is the president’s fault/feat.

I need the unemployment as badly – I am 61 years old and lost my job through no fault of my own I only got 26 weeks–now cut off and no money since Dec.now Cant find a job because of age discrimination and cant pay my bills anymore ! BUT I dont believe in a NANNY STATE either and that is what the Dems are trying to do!– Create another entitlementl I dont believe in unlimited unemployment – there has to be JOB creation so I understand what the Repubs are trying to do BUT I dont think using the Unemployed who are hurting as HOSTAGES is RIGHT EITHER!! That is SICK actually! I have been emailing MY Republican Senator and telling him this is going to be bad for the republicans in November. But I wont be voting for Democrat EITHER!! They are WORSE! I will vote straight CONSERVATIVE or Libertarian from now on!! No more Dems or Repubs!! We need to get away from this two party conundrum we are in!!

People will start doing whatever it takes to put food not only in their childrens mouths, but their own mouth as well. If it means selling drugs or robbing a store they will do it. But then again, we live in a country where the government creates the criminals and then punishes them; all while they receive the $ you pay to get yourself out of the position that our wonderful government put us in. All I can say is, what little bit of $ I/we have needs to be put into anything that will sell. Small vegetable/flower gardens, anything you have knowledge in spread it around, if you can do plumbers work let your friends and neighbors know, spring is here for some start asking to do yard maintenance in your neighborhood. Whatever it takes, because we have all learned a hard lesson here…OUR GOVERNMENT IS OUT FOR THEMSELVES AND WHAT LITTLE BIT WE MIGHT OWN!

  • Curtis Pinkney

Let the senate pass this bill and if the house doesnt give it to the president. He said during the state of the union he had a phone and pen let him use it! Boehner is the biggest asshole this country has ever seen. If he gets reelected in November then there is definately something wrong with the voters in this country

    • Rachel

You don’t get it. It has nothing to do with the voters. It is the electorate that really votes people in or out – not us. Boehner has huge amts of $$ backing him via corporate lobbyists.

      • Brian

No, it is just the voters of his district in Ohio that votes him in. Read the Contitution sometime. And the problem is on BOTH sides. Obama has been in office for over 5 years, with a Dem house and senate. It is a failure of leadership, at the end of the day. I need the benifets as much as the next guy, but 17,000,000,000,000 is a real problem. Big business is not hiring because of Obama care. There is not just one solution to the issues facing our Country.

Our government has become so out of touch with the voters that they no longer have any concern about the american people. All I am hearing from the state and federal government is whining about how hard it will be to achieve this simple task. This, from the people that we trust with our safety and security who currently have so much time off that they can’t even come to a decision on any matter that might actually help the AMERICAN people. Stop taking vacations, fix this mess, and consider yourselves on notice.

  • Unemployment OWL

I tell you people are going to go lunatic on these politicians and unemployment. I see the angry words being expressed on the internet more and more. All these discouraging new articles. Just wait till the news starts witnessing this kind of thing! People will get real desperate when the loose there homes and there dignity.

    • CL

It’s going to get real ugly out here. We are going to be hearing about people taking their famiies out like they did when the economy first took it’s dive. Crime is going to go up and it is going to be crazy.

armed revolution and revolt is the answer… total overthrow by violence of this zionist-run totalitarian regime is the only way to bring forth a new system for people and by them.. as your thomas jefferson said.. our experience in ukraine shows this to be true…

      • Hopeful

VIOLENCE HAS NEVER SOLVED ANYTHING. IT HAS ALWAYS JUST MADE THINGS WORSE. TRY PRAYER AND FAITH INSTEAD. THE OUTCOME IS MUCH BETTER.

  • LaughnigLion

What, there are about 2 million or so long-term unemployed right now, waiting for the continuation of their unemployment insurance extension? HIRE about a million of us to process the backlog and we could probably get it done at HALF the cost and in HALF the time. I would be willing to be trained and given a job processing the retroactive unemployment insurance payments. How could the Republicans object to that?

    • CL

I’ll work it too. We want to work. We don’t want handouts we just need some help right now.

    • Rachel

Because it has nothing to do with reason. It is politics. They will have the electorate votes coming up and they will win. They don’t need the peoples votes – it is the electorate that determines who stays or goes. Do you think this would really be happening if this was NOT the case?? They have huge amts of $$$ from big corp who hire lobbyists to pay off these corrupt people.

They (our Corrupt Govt) have someone already picked out who will keep the STATUS QUO—The Rep Establishment is already rooming Jeb BUSH and the Dems have ‘Kill’ ary ClINTON —–ESTABLISHMENT ESTABLISHMENT ESTABLISHMENT!! If we were ALL SMART we would steer away from BOTH PARTIES THIS TIME AND FIND A
COMMON MAN TO RUN AGAINST ”’BIG GOVERNMENT”" IT IS THE ONLY WAY– WE THE PEOPLE HAVE TO STOP CHOOSING BETWEEN THESE TWO PARTIES WHO ARE LIKE ”WWF” WRESTLERS —–ITS ALL A SHOW! WE ARE THE ONLY LOSERS!!

One more thing…THE UNEMPLOYMENT ISSUE IS DUE TO NOT HAVING/GETTING A JOB BEING FIRED/LAID OFF THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, BEING THE G’MENT WAS PAYING THEM THEY SHOULD AUTOMATICALLY BE PAID IN DEFAULT BECAUSE “ITS NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN THAT THE G’MENT DID NOT MEET THE DEC 28TH DEADLINE” DING DING DING!!!

      • whiteracistmale

the “whiteracistmale” handle is what this society has labeled me for voting Republican, opposing “black culture” by calling this administration on its bullshit and for being an American Patriot. If I were to name myself it would be Pissedoffveteran but if their shoe fits ya wear it

        • Beau D

I am currently one of the few of the “younger” generation currently awaiting for this bill to pass. But it breaks my heart to see veteran and older people struggling to go past this because in reality no one should suffer the fate of a g’ment. I see people twice my age trying to break back into the working department but whats really disheartening as well discriminating is the fact that a vast majority of you are capable of working yet they piss your age or find some silly excuse NOT to hire people who NEED the jobs. They need people to fill in the gaps otherwise in all perspective they are the racists for not letting people flourish with work ethic but felt blacklisted. In the famous words of Al Pacino “What a sham. What kind of a show are you guys puttin’ on here today?!” -Scent of a woman

          • Layla

And how many of you voted for this job killing President? Twice.

          • Beau D

I never voted. I see politicians as a bunch of scumbags unworthy of my opinion to be honest.

        • Hopeful

I HAVE A SOFT SPOT IN MY HEART FOR OUR VETERANS AND THE MILITARY. YOU ARE OUR HEROS AND DESERVE MORE THAN WHAT THE GOVERNMENT PROVIDED YOU WITH. I PRAY THAT GOD RESTORES OUR VETERANS AND THOSE COMING OUT OF THE MILITARY INTO THIS MESS.

    • Erik

      exactly

    • Hopeful

THAT WOULD SURELY GET THEIR ATTENTION; HOWEVER, I DON’T THINK IT WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM….IF ANYTHING REVOLTING MAY BE THE CATALYST TO THE INITIATION OF MARTIAL LAW. AND TRUST ME, YOU DON’T WANT MARTIAL LAW TO KICK IN.

  • mds

Excuses, excuses, excuses! They knew all along this was going to happen. Maybe they shouldn’t have stopped it to begin with! We have a bunch of clowns running this country. They think this is a big joke and who suffers through all this? The Americans who have worked all their lives, paid taxes and gave them THEIR jobs! Why don’t they hire the unemployed to do their job! All we ask for is temporary assistance to be able to feed our families, keep our homes and pay our bills. These are benefits that we are entitled to for contributing to society. They need to get off their a***** and think about how this is going to affect our future generation as well. Where do they think our kids will end up if we can’t even afford their education???

    • Layla

      Entitled to? Really? Why?

      • Beau D

Losing a job through no fault of their own, this means in language- being fired, laid off..if you quit you are not entitled to these benefits UNLESS you quit the workforce within reasonable bounds such as- You are a full time driver for a company, the truck you drive a head gasket fails..that work truck the company provides so you can do your job is out of commission for over a month and you are working part time hours, then you have a right to quit and file because the company is no longer providing you a set full time hours. You are quitting as to no fault of your own because the company is not providing you the hours of full time which you were gained employment for. These people are entitled to these claims to keep money in their pockets, an economy going, chance and time to get what they need done inbetween looking for a new job. Denying millions of people who are just trying to make ends meet is a meat grinder looking for disaster.

      • https://www.etsy.com/shop/SmokinSwag cheshire572

It’s called insurance. We paid for it through work. like retirement, disability etc.

  • Diana PrincessofDarkness Waldr

I can not believe there are so many people that our government is leaving out in the cold. This does not only effect people who were receiving unemployment but also the single mothers who rely on the child support to made ends meet. Child support taken directly from unemployment benefits is no long an option. So until we are all in the state of poverty while our government sends aide to other countries the American people suffer.

  • Kim Akrm

    The Republicans are holding
America hostage because of a vendetta that they have against Obama. This is exactly why we went to war in Iraq because Bush had a vendetta against Houssein. We spend money on every country but we will never help the people of our own country. Who does Congress work for. I would rather my taxes go to the long term unemployed then to the salaries, perks and pensions of our useless Congress. You should all be fired and find out what it is like to live on the streets.

  • Kim Akrm

I want a government job then I can complain when I have to work a third of the year like Congress does.

  • ladysidearm

How can they say that it would be hard to find out if people have been looking for work since December in order to avoid overpayment? First of all if a person has no income coming in and they have to feed their families and keep a roof over their heads of course they are looking for work. That was a stupid statement. I have been looking for work and going on interviews for jobs that I’m totally qualified for, but have not gotten. The job market is selective, unpersonalized and prejudice. Applicants are a test question and general personality survey now. The GOP is not worried about the billions of dollars they are putting
out for the false SSi and Welfare recipients. And everyone in this
country can name at least 10 people they know who are defrauding those. And the GOP says that we are not getting the jobs because we are being
made lazy by the money we are receiving from UI benefits that we earned.

The GOP needs a wake up call. From now on voting should be a active thing not just marking somebody because you heard of their name. But we really need to look at who is running and their background and qualifications. Maybe we should make them take the questionaire and the personality test from now on. And we should stop voting (yes) on the little stuff that is making them rich.

    • Layla

And YOU need a wake up call. The Senate is controlled by the Democrats.

      • Icare

Sorry Layla, where do you see the word senate… I can’t fine it in ladysidearm’s post???

      • Beau D

Really? With a house controlled by the REPUBLICANS? Whos the current Senate speaker and which political system does he represent?

      • Andy Boley

Yeah but it’s the Republician House that makes the final decision!

        • Rachel

No, the senate and president are controlled by corporations and their lobbyists.

      • Kevin MFone

Layla, I think you’ve hit the snooze button about 100 times too many. Did you reply to the wrong comment or something?

      • Rachel

No, the senate and president are controlled by corporations and their lobbyists. Educate yourself.

      • Erik

NO ! ITS CONTROLLED BY ZIONIST OCCUPATION AND THEIR ALLIES.. NOT AMERICANS. THE US GOVERNMENT IS RUN BY ZIONIST LOBBYIST CROOKS THAT SHOULD BE DESTROYED JUST LIKE WE DID TO YANUKOVYCH IN UKRAINE.. America need to wake up and fight against these monsters.. BOHNER IS A ZIONIST AND CARES NOT ABOUT HUMANITY..

      • ladysidearm

i don’t need a wake up call this article states the GOP. The senators who introduced this bill vote are Democrats. But the person who is trying to fight it is a Republican. UI benefits were taken out of my pay each and every pay period. For over 22 years I should be able to count on that money when I need it. Period. If i decided to have baby after baby I could go to the government and say you owe me money, food, medical, education and housing and they would not bat an eye. Even though I have never paid into the system (taxes) that provided those luxuries. But the government has the audacity to say that the people who have paid into the very system that has funded this country can’t look to this country when they are in need. I don’t care if it is Democrats or Republicans help your people that is what I’m saying.

    • Rachel

Um, it is the entire system that is corrupt. Please educate yourself about this! Check out the videos on utube of truthloader and stormcloudsgathering.

  • Jeffrey Wayne Smith

This affects millions who have NO INCOME, not simply a reduction in income. These millions of individuals… of tax-paying Americans should not have to continue to suffer further delays or the possibility that this will NEVER come to fruition because our government waited too long to decide to help and now the efforts seem unsurmounable. Are any of the aforementioned issues new discoveries? Deal with it! Please, finally, support those who support you!

    • peaches

Okay If the big deal is that UI are trained for jobs, how about training us for their job, because they are doing a poor job at taking care of people who are now employed. In addition the UI are tax payers who are not or will not be satisfied with congress game playing!

  • Unemployment OWL

I think the Senate has waist more then enough time! Everyone, Lets not pay our taxes! Kiss our white biscuits!

    • Kim Akrm

I agree. We have been waiting for our money that we will never receive. If you owe the IRS a dime, don’t pay it. Let’s see how overcrowded we can make the jails. Then we will have enough of a presence to fight with.

Why had they been allowed those making a million/plus collect unemployment…to me that was extremely simiple thinking (stupid) in the first place. Wow that shows me how unfocus regarding the economy, those people are/have been. I am sure it smells like pure urine on that hill…while cowards of these USA rush to wipe someone’s GOP. ARE YOU KIDDING BOEHNER???

JOHN BOEHNER HAS ISSUE WITH EVERYTHING BUT WAR!

Contact his office without delay and tell him to move this legislation immediately.

People need to quit voting for Republicans. Many of them are heartless and cause issue for very simple programs like long-term unemployment during times of crises.

But the trillions spent on wars which really never solved anything got them high fiving and thinking they are benefiting America. Some Republicans are twisted human beings and I think they should be removed from Congress and not allowed to campaign for 2 elections. What Republicans are doing sets out country back and it needs to stop. The Republican will be a thing of the past as the newer generations become more caring, thoughtful and empathetic.

    UNBELIEVABLE BOEHNER!!!

And mean while we could lose our home, car and have our electricity shut off, and by the way they ruin our credits. Let them be without a job, see how long it will take them to pass the extension, they can all rot in hell. And if the people on the unemployment to lazy to do our payments get them out of there, and we will do it, for them. I can’t understand this government is like living in a communist country. I’m so discouraged with the people in this country, that want help one another.

YOU ARE SO RIGHT. IF PEOPLE WEREN’T SO LAZY AND HAD A LITTLE COMPASSION FOR THE LESS UNFORTUNATE; THEY WOULD PROCESS THE PAYMENTS QUICKLY AND THE HOUSE WILL GET THE EXTENSION PASSED QUICKLY. ITS SAD HAVING TO DEAL WITH THIS. AND THESE LAZY PEOPLE WORKING AT THE UI ARE NO HELP AT ALL BECAUSE WHEN YOU CALL THE UNEMPLOYMENT OFFICE, YOU EITHER GET PUT ON HOLD FOR HOURS, AND IF YOUR LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET SOMEONE TO PICK UP AND THEY DON’T HANG UP ON YOU, YOU GET ATTITUDE. SOMETHING HAS GOT TO CHANGE IN THIS WORLD. I SEE GOD TURNING THESE CORRUPT SYSTEMS AROUND SOON.

      synopsis: In a few words?

  • Unemployment S.2148

    *
The government left marriage up to the states and I don’t expect
government to do the right thing with unemployment. It a real sad shame
that so many of us are going to be hurt by them.

  • L.Warren

Please contact NASWA’s Executive Director Rich Hobbie on 202.434.8022 if you have questions.

The Republican Party, also commonly called the GOP for “Grand Old Party” is really having a Grand Old Party with our tax dollars at the expense of our livelihood! Write to your state reps and call for immediate impeachment proceedings to fire Bone Head John A. Boehner NOW!!! You don’t have to wait for mid-term elections!

  • Mountain man

By not resolving this pressing issue before EUC expired, they now are the cause of the administrative problems that will exist in implementing it. Therefore, pass the bill waiving the states’s work search requirements on the retroactive portion and drop the millionaire provision which in the scheme of things is a drop in the bucket anyhow! Deal with them later. Problem solved!! If it costs more, well gubmt just eat it! You created the problem! Problem solved by the people. How simple, eh, agreed?

  • Unemployment S.2148

The House of Representatives has 432 members, 232 are republican, and 199 are democrats. I don’t see S.2148 having much of a chance.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH TIME TO PROTEST IN WASHINGTON,THESE CROOKS IN WASHINGTON NEED TO BE SHOWN THAT WE AS AMERICANS WILL NOT TOLERATE BEING TREATED LIKE YESTERDAYS NEWS. IT JUST NOT ABOUT EXTENDED BENEFITS FOR THE UNEMPLOYED ITS ABOUT WHAT WE AS AMERICANS FIND EXCEPTABLE PERIOD.

  • speakout

This is horrible! What does congress think this is a game? If the states are overwhelmed it’s congress’ fault. They said it would be retroactive just to make us feel better? I AM TIRED.

  • Annie Kiser

mhenry@NASWA.org Email this tool who is whining the states can’t pay retro EUC because their computer systems are too old.

States CAN and HAVE paid EUC retro. As for the millionaires exclusion – get the EUC retro payments out, then have them repay it once their systems can be retooled to sort out those very few uber rich claimants. As for sorting out who continued to look for a job…..sh!t….WHO DIDN’T? I can’t support a family on $385/week! And in IL we were told to continue filling out Job Search records – those can be used.

Is NASWA funded by the GOP?

  • Enough already!

I have posted this on other blogs, and I feel it needs to be said here as well…

Once again another week goes by and nothing is done about eu insurance. More people have lost their homes, cars and ability to provide for their families. It is becoming more and more evident that our elected officials are more focused on political positioning than the people that elected them.

They have lost sight of what their true job is, managing the tax revenues for the benefit of this country, not managing the funds to benefit themselves, their political party, or their self serving crony capitalism. Essentially, they are responsible for the health of our economy. They have failed miserably! It is their legislation (both sides of the isle) that has caused our economy to fail as badly as it has and yet they continue to turn their backs on the casualties they created.

They have stated that, “we need to find a way to pay for this”. How about the 5 billion that you just sent to Syrian rebels, how about the 1 billion you just sent to the Ukraine ?!?! Why are Syrian rebels and Ukrainians more important than the citizens of your own country? How many Americans could have been helped with that money? How about the excessive amounts of government waste that could be cut to fund this? Give me one week with your budget and I could find hundreds of billions that could be used to infuse the economy and create jobs.

I am beyond fed up with our current politicians. It is no longer “We the people for the people”, it has become “We the politicians for the lobbyist and/or the special interest groups”. I am tired of the excuses and finger pointing, I am tired of the failed/failing legislation , and I am tired of your self preserving political rhetoric. From this point forward I refuse to vote dem or republican ever again and I will encourage everyone who has been negativity affected by their decisions to do the same. Because any vote for dems or reps is nothing more than a self inflicted wound and self abuse. There are other options on the ballot that have become far better alternatives than the status quo. You have continually failed at the job you were elected to do, in any other industry you would have been fired long ago.

    • Unemployment S.2148

The reason why the government is not jumping through hoops for unemployment (6.7 %) is because we are very small amount of the tax revenues compared to the tax collected from the rest of the country. We appear to be expendable.

If Bone Head John Boehner doesn’t want to pass the bill, will the president pass it as an executive order???

How can the president make laws without the congress?
    Answer:

Quite simply really – It is called a presidential executive order.

    From Wikipedia…

An executive order in the United States is a directive issued by the President, the head of the executive branch of the federal government. In other countries, similar edicts may be known as decrees, or orders-in-council. Executive orders may also be issued at the state level by a state’s Governor. U.S. Presidents have issued executive orders since 1789, usually to help direct the operation of executive officers. Some orders do have the force of law when made in pursuance of certain Acts of Congress, when those acts give the President discretionary powers.

Critics have accused presidents of abusing executive orders, of using them to make laws without Congressional approval, and of moving existing laws away from their original mandates.[1] Large policy changes with wide-ranging effects have been effected through executive order, including the integration of the armed forces under Harry Truman and the desegregation of public schools under Dwight D. Eisenhower.

One extreme example of an executive order is Executive Order 9066, where Franklin D. Roosevelt delegated military authority to remove all people (used to target specifically Japanese Americans and German Americans) in a military zone.

    • Spencer Mason

Obama has been using this tactic his whole time in office. That is why REPUBS are pissed and dangling the carrot. Obama doesn’t seem to say much about the unemployed.

  • Jeff

In case you are wondering the Republican’s who are voting the extension down, own the notes on many of the mortgages (or their friends do) and are trying to get more homes foreclosed. It’s obvious. How bout not extending unemployment AND putting lender placed flood insurance on homes. Great job republicans!

  • foolproof

I wish all these tight fisted tight sphinctered republicans would keel over with almost fatal heart attacks. I want them to survive, but miserably. Maybe a few could not recover. I’d be OK with lung cancer as an alternative. I’m in my 50′s, have been looking hard, There aren’t jobs and they go to the 20′s and 30 year old. You have to keep the car running, the phone connected and the internet working. I’ve been prioritizing keeping the life insurance because at some point in the not too distant future, if things don’t get better- well I’m worth more dead than alive, would to be able to leave something for my kid instead of asking if I can move in with him because I can’t afford to live on my own.

Excuses, excuses. The states have had 2 mil people less to deal with for almost 4 months now and they claim they are too busy to back date, they have 25 year old computers. Please don’t make me barf. I didn’t see a provision for job creation attached to the government employee retroactive bailout whereby they didn’t have to work to collect full paychecks.

The GOP is minting millions of new Democrats. What a gut punch to the millions of struggling Republicans to be thrown to the wolves by your own party. The fact is that the poor and the unemployed are INVISIBLE to the GOP. Thy simply do not care about you or your family. They are in Washington to further the agenda of the Plutocrats that own our government. At least the Democrats are willing to throw some scraps to the desperate. The GOP could not care less about the millions of Americans that are losing everything, I hope all readers remember that fact in November.

This “letter” that Boehner is using to throw these millions to the wolves was written by a Republican hack in Mississippi named Mark Henry. Continued extensions of UI are turning the program into the new welfare. Studies are shown extending UI causes some people to delay taking a job. Contrary to all the sky is falling rhetoric, extended benefits have lapsed in the past and people got their act together and survived. If hysterics lead to continued extensions of UI, we might as well just be honest and call it welfare.

WITHHOLDING UNEMPLOYMENT WAS NEVER THE CAUSE OF PEOPLE SUDDENLY GETTING JOBS. THATS A LIE. PEOPLE WHO ARE ON UNEMPLOYMENT ARE NOT LAZY PEOPLE WHO ARE LIVING OFF OF UNEMPLOYMENT AS IF IT WERE ENOUGH TO SURVIVE. EVERYBODY WANTS JOBS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE ARE ANY. AND IF THERE ARE JOBS, THEY EITHER DON’T PAY ENOUGH FOR ONE TO SURVIVE OR THE COMPANY IS SO PICKY AND SELECTIVE AND DISCRIMINATIVE THAT THEY MAKE IT HARD FOR GOOD PEOPLE TO GO BACK TO WORK.

  • Golden Maiden

Vote the Career Politicians out of office in the Mid Terms – both DEM and GOP – and with any luck at all Bonehead..err… Boehner will get in the path of a tricycle as he’s leaving the kindergarten merry-go-round, suffer a concussion,be replaced prior to the bill getting to the House for its vote. (And no Secret Service, that was not a threat, it was just fantasy projection.)

Of course, that playgound is awful full what with all the ‘recess’ time the Senates has too.

It’s their JOB to get this done. It was their job to do it BEFORE they went to their comfy homes and holiday dinners, their state dinners, voted on giving MORE UNPAID FOR funds to 3rd world countries who hate our existence and everything we stand for, etc, and to distribute the money – hell, read from California – they are bragging on their facebook page about getting $42 MILLION recently to higher 250 people (LMFAO at that rate for 250 ) – And haven’t they ALL been saying nationally that UE is DOWN DOWN DOWN.. so they should have plenty of resources now *smirks*. Just do your jobs, as they were already DOING prior to How to be a Jackass 101 (The Senate) began playing dodge ball with over 2 MILLION VOTERS lives – I fine it completely amazing how few days they work to begin with, how little they get done and how often they bi%ch about how hard their jobs are – and how many trees they kill “proving” why they can’t do their job – the UEI also. Maybe if they spent less time whining over why they can’t do their job and just DID their job we’d have a ready made resolution. How dare they have the gaul to write that letter and how dare he have the nerve to flaunt it as a weapon. This man – above all others – has waved a bright red flag at the american people and screamed out “$uck this!”. Talk about a God Complex.

VOTE THEN ALL OUT OF OFFICE,

But even more important to me is when will the bill reach the House? Obviously the Senate vote takes places AFTER the Christmas recess, AFTER the New Year recess, After the Pre-Spring Recess, after the Saint Patrick’s Day recess… A F T E R money is sent to another country that we have no business rescuing BEFORE we care for our own citizens.. and of course THAT leaves this partial list of MORE possibly ‘recess’ time/allowances –
    Spring Equinox

International Earth Day – also called Sun-Earth Day
    Feast of the Annunciation
April Fool’s Day – I’m guessing this will be the day *smirks*
    International Tatting Day
National Walk to Work Day 1st Friday
    Palm Sunday
Passover begins at sundown, lasts 8 days.
Income taxes due (most years it is due on the 15th)
    Good Friday
    Easter Sunday
    Patriot’s Day Third Monday
    Earth Day (U.S.)
Administrative Professionals Day formerly “Secretaries Day” – because whose going to type the bill up, right?
Take Your Daughter to Work Day 4th Thursday
Arbor Day always the last Friday in April

Since late last December, more than two million unemployed
    workers,

And their children, have been without unemployment benefits,
    due to

The failure of the Republican Party to pass an unemployment
    extension bill.

After several proposals by the democrats, to get this bill
    passed in the senate,

These unemployed workers are still no closer of getting the
    financial help that

They so desperately need to provide for their families. The
    Republicans have consistently

Denied passing of the bill. These families have had to face
    evictions, home foreclosures,

Bankruptcy, and homelessness. When millions of tax payer’s
    dollars are freely given to

Finance corporate welfare, and foreign aid, nothing is given
    to these families who are

Out of work. When billions of tax payer’s dollars were used
to Bailout both the Banking and Airline industries, to name but a few, how is
can it be justified not to help the average

American family? These millions of people are angry
and will voice their anger in the 2016 election with their vote. These families

While the republicans continue to play “party politics”, millions of unemployed workers and their children continue to suffer without their extended unemployment benefits. The republicans have shown that they’re not “the party for family values”, like they pride themselves as representing. They are a party that’s lacking in human compassion, and decency, for not helping these families in need. Since late December, these families have been without any financial means to care for their families and households. The republicans have rejected every opportunity to pass an extension bill that would have helped these families through a very difficult situation. This party has shown nothing but contempt of the poor in this country, by their countless stands on a variety of fundamental issues. How can they possibly delay this bill after all of this time, with these people having had to face be eviction, home foreclosure, personal bankruptcy, and homelessness? How do these fellows sleep at night, knowing the affects of their decision on the poor? Why is there never a long drawn out debate, when they use tax payer’s money to pay for CORPORATE WELFARE, AND FOREIGN AID , OR THE BILLIONS SPENT ON BAILING OUT GREEDY BANKERS, AND THE AIRLINE INDUSTRY? These unemployed voters are angry and will make their voices heard in 2016 elections. I hope all of these selfish losers will be voted out of office, and replace with “public servants” again.

Lindsay, it will be fine as long as Senator Boehner comes up with a plan himself to help create jobs. what? is he not allowed to give suggestions? In this case where he has people begging and pleading for help. Two parties fighting like kids. The rich try to make the poor act rich by living the way they live but forget that we do not have high paying jobs nor do we have health insurance. Right now the 2 million or more people do not have much of nothing but prayers while rich people like Senator Boehner sit back and dictate if I am rich or poor. • Jenine Smith

This is just ridiculous. I am so angry right now. Here we have Senate Democrats and Republicans working together to pass the unemployment extension benefits and John Boehner doesn’t want to take it up because of what some outside group says. The biggest lie the NASWA said was that, “Most states are struggling with antiquated and rigid computer systems — averaging 25
years old — thus making it very hard to implement program changes
quickly and effectively.” If that was the case, then why do most states now put unemployment payments on a debit card instead of a check? Obviously many states have updated within the last 10 years. There is one thing Senator Dean Heller is right about. This is just the latest excuse to deny benefits and Boehner’s just buying into it because he doesn’t give a damn about anyone but himself. At this point, I think the only thing that could save this bill is if John Boehner either a) go with the Senate on this one or b) step down as House Speaker before his re-election. I personally think he should go with b) because he’s clearly shown his true colors on this one. Even when people from his own party in the Senate are trying their hardest, he just shoots them down. He cannot be trusted.

    • LaughnigLion

I know that the state computers are up to date. I see them play Candy Crush on their computers while I am waiting in line. You can’t play Candy Crush on “antiquated computers” . . . maybe Donkey Kong or Asteroids, but not the new games out there.

      • Jenine Smith

Exactly! They’re just coming up with last minute excuses not to pass this bill. Every time the Senate tries to pass this thing, here comes some outside lobbyist group to discourage them. First, it was the Republican aides and some “financial experts,” and now it’s NASWA.

  • Daa’iyah

Please note that the latest obstruction is coming from the Labor Department themselves. It is them that created a thesis outlining why implementing such a program would not be feasible. The House Speaker and his colleagues are to blame for continuously filibustering the votes in the past, however a compromise was enacted only to have it questioned and/or possibly taken away because of those people Employed within “The National Association Of Workforce Agencies.” The Director of the Agency actually took the time to draft a novel objecting to the Extension. It is duly noted and I understand that issues may ensue. However, didn’t issues arise during the inception of the other extensions? How were they able to filter from those that are qualified to receive an extension from those that were not? I am quite sure they provided man power in order to isolate the ineligible from the eligible.

One of the main reasons he object is that the majority of the Labor Departments are working with outdated computers. How is this possible? When I am quite sure the computers that he is calling primitive, have the capabilities to interpret which Americans are qualified for the initial State Regular Unemployment. If they didn’t how were they able to reach their determination. This same computer, computes an individual’s information as in employer information, salary, residence, and so forth to determine who is eligible. And if they hired people that have the intelligent mindset would know that if a query was ran on that same computer by utilizing Microsoft Access, then it would make it easier to determine the wealthy from the middle class if they isolated the information based on income.

I believe he alluded to the non fact that there is no way of knowing a person adjusted gross income because the “UI system”do not have that capability . Well how, did they know my adjusted gross income as it was used to determine the Unemployment weekly amount. The system aggregates one’s income from the money earned from an employer for that calendar year, thus which gives the UI Department the amount we are entitled to collect.

His complaints is just another excuse to derail this crisis. If it wasn’t for the unemployed he and his colleagues wouldn’t have a job. That is probably why he wants to prolong this issue.

Wouldn’t have been wise, to have all of these so called issues resolved beforehand as the Labor Department had over 3 months to complete? What concerns me is that if “they” meaning the Department of Labor which I do not believe one bit, but if “they” were working with outdated computers that do not support the proper functionalities that is needed to isolate the wealthy from the middle class then why this computer issue wasn’t broached long ago. I am quite sure, there is an separate monetary account for anything relative to stationary, with that being said, those old computers could have been replaced long ago.

Those excuses could be quickly resolved if they hired qualified workers in the first place. Are there 80 year old people working there that they are finding it difficult to perform such tasks?

These people baffles me. It is disheartening to know, that since I am from New Jersey and worked in New Jersey, a state that withhold taxes from “employee” wages in order to fund unemployment insurance. I am unable to receive an extension on my own UI insurance. Because people keep getting in the way of the VOTE. My regular insurance ended in January 2014, so I didn’t have the chance to maneuver into an “extension”.

It seems to me that this Director is working with Boehner and clan? What do you think? His issues are the same as Boehner, as both have an issue with retro payments amongst other things.

Because of this Director and his colleagues many people if not already suffering will now start to loose their minds and that is not a good thing.

One thing is for certain. Boehner does not care for anything other than his own personal agenda. In the face of Bipartisan agreement and overwhelming public support for the Unemployment Extension bill, and he still finds a way to stop it from helping the 2 million who are on the verge of losing everything. I really think that it is time as citizens to organize a coup of this government and get people in office who actually care about the country and its citizens. This has become a nation of backdoor shady deals.

So they request certain provisions, get them, then claim they are unworkable. And cite government ineptitude and old computers as the reason why. I bet if the expenses were audited, we would find some misappropriated funds along the way that were marked for computer upgrades at some point.

Mark Henry is a Republican appointee to the Mississipi EUC according to my sources. So this letter is just more Republican bullcrap.

I’m a life long republican that has been out of work for one year and I’m about to lose my house, If the house republicans don’t pass this bill ASAP I will be voting straight democrat in the next election.

All of us who are unemployed would gladly fill the positions of those complaining about their extra work load. Let them lose their jobs and sit and wait for compensation like the rest of us have. Most of these positions not only pay more than minimum wage but come with some of the best benefits. Stop your bellyaching and do what is right and just!

They want to complain saying the new law if passed this week to reauthorize EUC would be difficult to adapt too is bullshit, the department of revenue and Department of Workforce Development work TOGETHER in each state! If they want to avoid paying benefits to eligible people that make a million or more a year all they have to do is look at past tax returns and tax statements filed with Department of Revenue for the year in question all done by a simple mouse click. I wish someone would seriously kill that John Boehner he is such a lier and the rest of his supporting republicans, I just cannot figure out why people voted for half of the congress officials we have, when is America going to wake up?

“Unemployed workers need our assistance in these difficult times, and we cannot let them down. I have shared these concerns with the leaders of the House and the Senate, and they understand the need for early action. When our legislators return to the Capitol, I ask them to make the extension of unemployment benefits a first order of business. And the benefits they approve should be retroactive, so that people who lose their benefits this month will be paid in full.”

    - George W. Bush, 2002

“We have, in some of the hardest-hit states, extended the unemployment insurance. There’s nothing that strikes to my heart more than the unemployed.”

    - Ronald Reagan, 1982

Even their god Reagan understood. What a shameful party they have devolved into.

    ————————————-

Also, the labor Dept. just debunked Boehner and Mark Henry’s assertion that it “isn’t workable”. Nice try, though. How many votes you think THAT will cost him? Getting to be too many to count for Boehner.

And rank and file Republicans – like the ones on this thread – still defend him. Down with the ship, I guess. Don’t even hold your breaths, just let go.

this is crazy it not even going to be a 5 month extenion.my euc ran out on dec 29 2013 unemployment told me the max i can get is 63 weeks. so even when the extenions passes some people might only get 2 weeks some might get nothing some might get 5 months.i want to work but there no jobs in nyc right now

  • DisgustedInMichigan

Okay if its so difficult to implement ‘retroactively’… The SOLUTION is SIMPLE!!! Simply eliminate the ‘retroactive’ …VOTE TO RESTORE effectively immediately going forward to those long term unemployed who are eligible on the existing / most recent EUC Eligibility policy. THis is not complicated. People NEED HELP .there should always be an extension program available — but eventually benefits do run out. Claimants will eventually run out of weeks to claim. The language in this BILL to restore RETROACTIVELY IS COMPLICATING the ISSUE. Change the language Mr Reid!!

    • Leeza

Why should my retro-payments be scarified because these lazy assholes don’t want to do their jobs? I performed my required work searches – I earned the retro payment by hitting the pavement knocking on doors, attending job fairs, work-search related workshops and countless hours submitting resumes to online postings and filling online applications. Damn straight they should release retro payments! I earned it!!!

      • DisgustedInMichigan

Hey Leeza, Don’t get me wrong , I to believe it can be implemented very easily. BUT …first of all I think we are all in agreement that this delay of restoring EUC has turned into a political game. Politics is about compromise, if a compromise is needed….. Coming away from a VOTE with SOMETHING vs. NOTHING. Is better. ?? Take a nice lump sum benefit payment now & many will just EXHAUST their weeks. So then what do they live on from now until end of June?? I’m just thinking for tghevbest interest overall is to go forward. It probably make more sense to the Republicans. it doesn’t make sense in the long term to implement a program that at this point will end in 2 months. would it not make sense to revise & 6 months going forward???? Anyone who has been in employed & paid taxes should be seeing a Tax Refund about now to help bridge gaps. ‘ just saying’

  • Trish H.

My husband lost his job in August 2013 due to his disability from suffering a stroke 5 years ago. He applied for SS disability and was denied. He has never collected unemployment before. His unemployment ended on March 9, 2014. He collected for the 26 weeks only, no extension. My family has been forced to use retirement money to pay bills. Congress needs to make a decision!

  • LAPensFan

How is it difficult? The system is already in place. All they have to do is allow each recipient to go into the web site and certify for each of the weeks that have already passed. How is that any different from what they were doing the whole time? What a joke. I can’t believe this garbage. How did these people get elected in the first place? My opinion of the people of Ohio who elected Boehner is very, very low at this point.

  • Rodrell Green

How about troops that are led to believe this a guarantee as part of transitioning from military and are getting training to attempt a chance at having a job in a depleted economy…..Dont get out my fellow service members! Let Uncle Sam own you for a few more lousy, stressful years. Be a slave at 1st? OR be free at last? you chose

  • Leeza

New York State has been taking weekly claims electronically for the weeks in question dated back to Dec 29th. They already have our claims in the system and to be eligible for continued benefits you are asked to keep a log of all work searches. The work is already done! This is just a stall tactic by LAZY state workers who don’t want to do their jobs, and state angecies bitching about who gonna “pay” for all this extra work!!! Baahaaaa…I’ll play the violin for you – will that make you feel better about having a job!

    • Hopeful

RIGHT, THE WORK IS ALREADY DONE. ITS DONE BY THEIR SYSTEM. IN OUR STATE, WE HAVE ALSO BEEN APPLYING SINCE DECEMBER AND ARE LOGGED IN. HOWEVER, THERE ARE SOME STATES THAT ARE NOT ALLOWED TO APPLY.

      • Patrick

CAPS ARE COOL. WELL THEN THOSE PEOPLE SIMPLY CALL IN AND VERIFY THEIR SEARCHES EXACTLY LIKE THE LAST TIME. AND THE TIME BEFORE THAT, AND BEFORE THAT, WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THIS HAS ALREADY HAPPENED, AND ALREADY BEEN ROLLED OUT PERFECTLY FINE. THERE IS NO PROBLEM AT ALL AND LEEZA IS CORRECT.

    • LaughnigLion

Illinois is the same way. We have been certifying all this time and recording our job searches.

As for the unemployment system workers I must rise to defend them. In Illinois at least they do a good job, it was the political hack and Republican shill Mr. Henry at NASWA that composed and sent the letter about the “difficulties” of the UIE. He has since backtracked after a vicious shellacking from the other state directors and rank and file members. That letter was nothing but POLITICS from a Republican Tea-Party supporter, plain and simple.

  • YONATAN C

How sad that men like John Boehner will stand in the way of the passing of the unemployment extension bill that would help the more than two million unemployed workers and their families without benefits, and the means to survive economically, while seeking employment. How can he claim to be for fiscal responsibility when millions of our tax payers dollars are going to fund corporate welfare and foreign aid? When tax payers dollars were spent on bailing out the Banking and Airline industries, amongst other companies, where was their “fiscal responsibility” and budgetary concerns then? Why is helping the average working American worker and families, not as important? I’m looking forward to the 2016 election. You will see these millions of voters show their distain and anger towards these career politicans in the voting booths.

  • Lisa

Someone gave me this number to call to support the unemployment extension. It’s to the speakers office. For those of you who say that people are lazy and are just collecting it for free money, that may be true for a select few, but it isn’t for the majority. There is no work in a lot of states so please don’t be so hasty and so judgmental. The number to call and they transfer you to speaker Boehner office is (202) 224-3121.

    • katherine valentine

thanks for that number I will be passing it on

  • YONATAN C

Those individuals who think like many of the Republican senators, that the unemployed are “lazy”, and “unwilling to work”, are sorely mistaken and delusional. No one in their right mind, would prefer unemployment to working, and making a better wage. For those misinformed with jobs, No one gets rich off of weekly unemployment benefits. The amount you receive can “barely” pay your minimum living expenses. Often it doesn’t, and you end up able to pay some bills, and not others. None of us are dining out on Steak and Lobster every night. This is a misconception and a means to discredit those unfortunate enough to have been laid off from their job. It’s always much easier to point your finger and blame the victim, instead of those in power that are making these laws and decisions. If you recall back, several years ago, it wasn’t the “unemployed” that caused the economic meltdown around the world. This was the directly caused by greedy bankers and CEO’s, who used tax payer’s money, as if it were their own to spend and invest as they chose. It wasn’t the “unemployed” that chose to Bail out the Banking and Airline industries, and the Automobile Industries. In case you’ve forgotten, this was done by our government officials, our so called “public servants”. Furthermore, it wasn’t the “unemployed who gives millions of tax payer’s dollars to foreign Aid, and to finance the rampant corporate welfare in this great country. So to those who are misinformed or delusional, you must re-direct your blame to the correct party. My question to the Republicans, is how do you justify all of the above, yet refuse to help the common man and woman, who has found themselves in a stagnant economy and unable to find employment? Why isn’t there a big drawn out debate about corporate welfare, foreign aid, banking bailouts, as there has now been with helping the unemployed with passing an extension bill? Do we live in two Americas? One for the one percent, and the other for the remaining ninety nine percent? You need to pass the extension bill immediately for the sake of these two plus million families in need. we two million voters will Not forget how we were treated .

What is happening is exactly what was planned to happen by the small group of people that run this world. They want total control over everyone, If you are currently among those that are sadly out of work because of their plan, have already lost everything, and are living simply with the prayer that your government will help you, FORGET IT, NOT GONNA HAPPEN. The Republican Party are at the center of this plan, and are dictated what to do and when to move this plan of world domination forward. The damage that has already been done to millions of citizens of this country can not be undone by the passage of this legislation.

Even if it passes the Senate, The house speaker who is already owned by these people, will never let it go through the house,

The proposal is only laid out for 5 months retroactive back to Dec. so they have stalled, went on vacations, etc. until its now just a moot point, its over folks.

Im so sorry to have lived long enough to see what the USA has become. Today the senate is voting to sent billions of dollars to yet another country, and it is a guarantee that it will happen without a hitch, because it is part of the plan.

So here it is, people… You better figure out how to do for yourself and those you care about, because thats your only hope, unless you band together and overthrow the government.

  • DWC

“Means Testing” for individuals who may have earned a million or so. In this economy, how many of the unemployed do you think really earned a million plus last year? Mr. Speaker, I am an employed government worker who has worked the better part of my 46 years, still employed, a former Ranger under the Clinton Administration and has always been a proud American, up until a few weeks ago wherein your arrogance to state you will not even bring a bill on the floor. To find out you are one of the individuals I have given my service to, makes me wish we have tossed you off Black Hawk. Your indifference and your arrogance will catch up with you when desperate Americans decide to take matters into their hands. If there are any rioting, looting, plundering, pillaging that may occur in the next few weeks, I hope you will have the National Guard at your beck and call in West Chester, Ohio, because I foresee that in the near future, as you oppress these 2 million Americans. Good luck, Mr. Speaker.

  • DerekJR321

Seems to me they are looking for every and any excuse to screw the unemployed over. Most states ask you to keep filing, even after your benefits ran out. I know that NY State does. There should be no delay in getting this out. It is NOT too difficult. It WILL NOT take too long. People need this help, and they need it now. Much more so than the Ukrainians who just got billions handed to them. Much more so than the doctors who need a bail out to keep their high 6-figure incomes. This is not a game people. They are playing with peoples lives. Enough is enough. How about no more vacations until you get this done politicians? They just had a 2-week vacation and they are about to take another at the end of April. I don’t want to hear about “Delays” or “might take till June”. This congress/senate has to be the laziest bunch of people on the planet.

Thank You For Posting, very good read, but if you havent figured it out by now the government of our beloved country “Does Not Care” about its own people, beyond whatever taxes they can suck off you. Ive put a stop to that myself. I maxed out my credit cards for cash, and will not repay, let them get it from the Repubs. Also anything i buy besides groceries is online out of state, so i pay no state taxes, and i will, for the rest of my life work for cash, directly for some consumer that wants a deal (They All Do)
and have no taxes removed from that, and claim no income, so the feds are done sucking off me, then turning their back when one of their loyal, vets need a hand. I have no pride to be an American, and recognize no Repub. as a human being.

Im just thankful that at 63 years old and unemployed for the first time in 40 years, that i dont have much longer to put up with these idiots.

OK so years ago I was on UK for three months after I got a job they said they overpaid me they took the money out of my state refund check so they are very capable of getting money back from those who shouldn’t get it and this las time I applied it took 9 weeks for them to send me a check so its OK when they have to send lump sum checks but now its to much work are u kidding me u call them and your on hold for over an hour then they are rude to you like your taking money out of their pockets how about giving me a job I’ll work for the state they have benefits and retirement everything is convienent when it works in their favor turn the tables and oh that’s gonna take more work or them doing their jobs that’s what they get paid for

  • Tony Casper

On the above line # 4 impossible to backlog. When unemployment ended in Dec 2013 their home page said that you should still file weekly to be edgible to recieve benefits if extended. I have been filing every week until the first quarter passed whereas it said I could no longer file because of insufficant wages. I have still been writing down all the info need in case of the extension passing. My point is if I was told to do it (and did) then why can’t the rest do it if they really needed it. I’m like many others cant pay bills and have amassed credit card debt just trying to make it till SS kicks in. I’ll be 62 in Nov. Noone wants to hire a 61 year old when they know that they can invest in a 25 year old for the long term. It’s impossible to find a job at my age. Believe me I have tried for now 2 years straight. I’m talking about any job. Anyway I hope it passes soon as things like this will ruin honest americans lives.

WHILE BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES PLAYED “PARTY POLITICS”, MILLIONS HAVE LOSS THEIR HOMES, AND ARE HOMELESS. THE REPUBLICANS LIKE JOHN BOEHNER HAVE HELD THE EXTENSION BILL “HOSTAGE” IN THE SENATE, FOR POLITICAL LEVERAGE, AND HIS PARTY’S AGENDA. WHILE THE SENATE TOOK BREAK AFTER BREAK, FAMILIES WERE BEING FINANCIALLY DESTROYED. MANY MIGHT NEVER FULLY RECOVER. THE REPUBLICANS INTENTIONALLY DELAYED THE VOTE, SO THAT IT WOULD BECOME TOO LATE TO BE PASSED. THESE FAMILIES WILL NOT FORGET THE LACK OF COMPASSION AND OF COMMON DECENCY SHOWN TO THEM. THEY WILL RESPOND IN KIND IN THE COMING ELECTIONS WITH THEIR VOTE.

Stories like this make me so proud of the fact that I make it a point to never, ever, ever , do ANYTHING for ANY republlscum EVER! Wether it be in my line of work, on the course, in everyday situations or what ever the case may be. Once I know someone is a republlscum, they DO NOT EXIST! I just wish everyone esle would do the same!
