Unemployment Benefits Headed for Senate Vote (Updated)

reid 227 032614 445x296 Unemployment Benefits Headed for Senate Vote (Updated)

(Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call)

Updated: 1:45 p.m. | The Senate is moving ahead Thursday with much-anticipated votes on an extension of unemployment insurance benefits that lapsed at the end of last year.

With backing from at least five Republicans, the bill should get the 60 votes needed to end a filibuster on bringing the bill up for debate.  It’ll still face the likelihood of another filibuster before final passage, expected next week.

Majority Leader Harry Reid set up a procedural vote Wednesday to jumpstart Senate debate. Without an agreement, that won’t happen until after a confirmation vote on John B. Owens, a California attorney who President Barack Obama’s tapped for a seat on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Before closing for the night, Reid moved to limit debate on the Owens nomination and set the gears in motion to take up the unemployment measure.  Reid warned of possible weekend work right at the beginning of the week, a threat that’s been quite common but seldom carried out.

John Boehner clearly is a backwards thinker. If he only worked this hard while the long-term unemployment bill was active we might have job reform, instead John waits until millions are struggling, which is too late. He is good at one thing — ok simi-good and that’s politicking and playing a game called kick the can.

Pass the bill or get out of the way and let some empathetic Representative who can.

Contact Boehner’s office and discuss this issue with him:

    Washington, D.C. Office
    1011 Longworth H.O.B.
    Washington, DC 20515
    (202) 225-6205

It needs to done without delay.

    Good luck!

Well said…Well said…Delay after Delay after Delay

    • jimv8673

It will do no good to call his office, !! do you really think that will change a worthless individual, that exists solely to cause pain and suffering to over 2 million out of work, out of money people.?? He jut laughs everytime he hears the phone ring, and says…probably one of those cry baby poor people again.

      • FedUpInNJ

I think ringing his phone off the hook, making comments calling him out on Facebook and Twitter can make a difference. ALL of these “do nothing” politicians hate to be bothered and can’t ignore public outcry via social media, its something they can’t delete or block and that pisses them off. If its not passed POTUS should be able to exec order it as emergency now that Congress has aptly named it “Emergency” unemployment extension. I hope people “bother” Boehner so much he quits! lol lol
EVERYONE should be contacting the House reps and making their voices heard: http://www.house.gov/representatives/

        • Crystal Rae Adams

You should see the stuff posted on Johns page. He is a joke. The comments are from millions of people disgusted with what he is doing in office. There is more negative comments toward then for him…. Alone we are nothing, Together we are everything. We need to do something.

  • YONATAN C

Those individuals who think like many of the Republican senators, that the unemployed are “lazy”, and “unwilling to work”, are sorely mistaken and delusional. No one in their right mind, would prefer unemployment to working, and making a better wage. For those misinformed with jobs, No one gets rich off of weekly unemployment benefits. The amount you receive can “barely” pay your minimum living expenses. Often it doesn’t, and you end up able to pay some bills, and not others. None of us are dining out on Steak and Lobster every night. This is a misconception and a means to discredit those unfortunate enough to have been laid off from their job. It’s always much easier to point your finger and blame the victim, instead of those in power that are making these laws and decisions. If you recall back, several years ago, it wasn’t the “unemployed” that caused the economic meltdown around the world. This was the directly caused by greedy bankers and CEO’s, who used tax payer’s money, as if it were their own to spend and invest as they chose. It wasn’t the “unemployed” that chose to Bail out the Banking and Airline industries, and the Automobile Industries. In case you’ve forgotten, this was done by our government officials, our so called “public servants”. Furthermore, it wasn’t the “unemployed who gives millions of tax payer’s dollars to foreign Aid, and to finance the rampant corporate welfare in this great country. So to those who are misinformed or delusional, you must re-direct your blame to the correct party. My question to the Republicans, is how do you justify all of the above, yet refuse to help the common man and woman, who has found themselves in a stagnant economy and unable to find employment? Why isn’t there a big drawn out debate about corporate welfare, foreign aid, banking bailouts, as there has now been with helping the unemployed with passing an extension bill? Do we live in two Americas? One for the one percent, and the other for the remaining ninety nine percent? You need to pass the extension bill immediately for the sake of these two plus million families in need. I can assure you that in the 2016 election, we two million voters will Not forget how we were treated .

      Well said…nice

    • MatthewANew

      truth!

    • nikk077

      Very well said Yonatan C!
I have found myself unemployed through no fault of my own, but at the fault of the economy issues. After approx. 14 loyal years to the same company, my position was eliminated due to financial reasons of the company (they could no longer afford to pay my wage and chose to cut my job rather than cut back somewhere else). I was told by the unemployment office that finding a job in my field, with my experience and pay grade at my age was more than likely not going to happen. I was directed to find another career path and go back to school to further my possible success in “this economy”. If my age prevents me from getting a job in my chosen career, one that I am good at and have worked towards for 20+ years, what will my chances be with a new degree and no experience? Also, who would pay for college for that career change? I was offered a “class” to learn how to extend my unemployment benefits for as long as possible while returning to school. I don’t want a new career! I want to work in the field that I know. I have been job searching relentlessly while working a part time job for $8/hr to supplement the “riches” I was receiving from the unemployment. Once these benefits were cut off my chances of staying afloat dropped to ZERO %. I do not want a hand out so that I can sit at home, the part time job that I have clearly shows that! I want the benefits to keep me and my family in a home, being able to eat and live until I find another job in my field. Many years ago, after a job loss, I worked 3 jobs rather than apply for unemployment. At this time, I need this benefit and it isn’t there.
For those commenters saying that those of us in favor and need of this benefit want it so that we can sit around and sponge off of our government, you are wrong! Wrong about the majority of us! YES, there are people that abuse this system and the others available to those in need, but this has been an issue for many years. Let’s not make this the time to try to fix that problem when there are so many legitimate people with real needs.

John Boehner obviously has never had to choose between rent/mortgage, electricity, water, food, medicine, school lunches, etc. If Mr. Boehner wants to down vote this much needed benefit, I wish he would contact me as soon as possible! I could really use a “friend” to help me out with some bills until his job stimulation plan gets moving!

      • teri joseph

I am in the same boat. My company claimed they had to let me go after 13 yrs and 8 months because needed to down size. They were making plenty of money, more than ever. Sales were out the roof. What they did was hire a friend who needed a change as our Office Manager, duh what am I. I was the Adm. Asst and Office Manager. To make matters even worse she was hired in at a much higher rate than me. I even trained her for 5 months. Five months, who is trained that long! Well here I am 1 yr and 5 months later I was told at the DOL I’m at the end. They couldn’t give me a answer on if I can receive any more benefits. I’ve done everything asked of me. I’ve work temp positions over and over with no one hiring full time permanently. Obama wants me to pay for insurance but at this point I feel my mortgage and car payments are more important.

    • MarineOutOfWork

      well said sir.

    • Myronjams@Yahoo.com

Well Said, my thoughts exactly, but much better articulated!

    • jimv8673

Thank You For Posting, very good read, but if you havent figured it out by now the government of our beloved country “Does Not Care” about its own people, beyond whatever taxes they can suck off you. Ive put a stop to that myself. I maxed out my credit cards for cash, and will not repay, let them get it from the Repubs. Also anything i buy besides groceries is online out of state, so i pay no state taxes, and i will, for the rest of my life work for cash, directly for some consumer that wants a deal (They All Do)
and have no taxes removed from that, and claim no income, so the feds are done sucking off me, then turning their back when one of their loyal, vets need a hand. I have no pride to be an American, and recognize no Repub. as a human being.

  • Based_Knowledge

To be honest I think all of us discouraged Americans should create petitions to impeach Boehner and sign and share each of them. It may seem kind of drastic, but hey if all 2 million long term unemployed make a petition to impeach Boehner and we all sign each of them or at least a majority of them it could force the presidents hand or whoever to take action and really get rid of him. I will sign any and all petitions to have Boehner removed immediately and to pass the EU benefits bill as well. If you think about it it could very well show some promising results. It only takes about 5 minutes to sign up and create your own Petition FYI.

    https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/impeach-john-boehner-now-throwing-more-2-million-unemployed-american-workers-under-bus/lKRNQNFt

There are currently 2 petitions on petition.gov to impeach Boehner. Please sign and share! Thanks!

    • Just Concerned

I have signed two of these petitions already. At the rate of others creating new petitions to sign, we would not get 100k on one petition. There are too many of them out there.

      • JohnnyHandsome

They don’t give a rats azz about those petitions. It’s a complete waste of time and energy. We are far beyond any petitions.

        • Chet Starling

Your right, make sure to file your claim if still unemployed and continue to, always until re-employed

          • Sebastian Klay

there is no more euc program…it ended like 3 months ago.

          • Chet Starling

It does not matter, citizens must still claim and be counted or it’s a guessing game. A guessing game that will end if litigation is necessary.

          • Sebastian Klay

There is no law or regulation that says states have to record a claim when there is no program in effect. No lawyer will take a case like that.

          • Chet Starling

There is actually in Washington State

          • VinnyFromIndy

Sebastian is only here because he gets his jollies sticking it to desperate Americans. He is a sociopath.

          • Sebastian Klay

name calling doesn’t bother me…it obviously bother you though and that’s good.

      • Sebastian Klay

that’s because their minimal support for this charade.

        • houstonbeachgirl

          Charade??? You pompus a$$
How old are you , 13?

          • Sebastian Klay

every week its next week. i’d call that a charade. best part is you weenies keep believing it.

        • VinnyFromIndy

Sebastian is a sociopathic troll that gets his jollies kicking desperate Americans on threads like these. He is NOT simply a reader that passed by and offered his opinion. He relentlessly searches Google News for stories about the unemployed and shows up on the comment threads to make fun of, discourage and denigrate the unemployed. He is a very sick person.

      • Chet Starling

Yep, make sure to continue to file and/or reopen your claim if still unemployed. it’s the only way to have immediate action.

  • kiontra

Through all this i still have faith. Not in our government, but in GOD!! All you can do at this point is pray. He sees all and knows what we need!

  • aaaa aa

“that won’t happen until after a confirmation vote on John B. Owens” When I commented yesterday that both sides of the isle are playing games with this extension many commented back that it was just the republicans causing issues. While I do agree that the republicans are causing much trouble with this extension people must understand that its also the senate. This week they passed the Ukraine money, doc fix and now this judge confimation. Now they have time to work on the EUC? They had all week to do so,they just put other issues ahead of the EUC.So yes,I still believe both sides are at fault. No matter one more than the other, fault is fault.Doesnt seem like either side wants this to pass,if they did, would’ve thought it would have passed 3 months ago. They just keep coming up with excuses to push it out.

    • nessa

You are so right. Both party are at fault. …just a political battle btwn both party.

      • VinnyFromIndy

This idea is absolute NONSENSE! The GOP owns this!!!!

It is mind blowing that anyone would blame both parties for this bill not passing. Democrats have voted UNANIMOUSLY on a half dozen occasions to pass this bill. They have given in to every demand short of repealing the ACA. This is the very first time in the history of the UI program that benefits have been denied to the long term unemployed when the national jobless rate was above 6% – THE VERY FIRST TIME. The GOP is actually creating dishonest reasons to obstruct this bill as can be seen with Boehner saying that states could not implement the bill that was crafted by a bi-partisan Senate group. So even after a half dozen concessions by Democrats to get help to the unemployed, the GOP is balking and pointing to THEIR very own demands that have been met as the reason why.

You certainly have the right to believe the nonsense that both parties are at fault, but for those paying attention, that idea is ridiculous and laughable!

        • Sebastian Klay

Because its an exercise in futility for the dims….and these attempts are insincere at best. The dims have known for a long time this was never going to fly. I agree the R’s don’t want this, but this time they mean it and are sticking to no means no. You can’t win all of them.

          • VinnyFromIndy

I see you have come back to exercise your sadism on desperate Americans again. What a terrible burden it must be to know you in real life. I pity all that have to deal with you on a daily basis. You are the PERFECT example of the modern conservative. You are arrogantly ignorant, mean, nasty and profoundly stupid.

          • Sebastian Klay

We don’t actually hang around you types in the real world. Why is it anyone’s fault you’re so desperate? Can’t you do anything for yourself? Has the liberalism disease debilitated you that much? I know its a hoot for you to argue and call me names on comment pages….so whatever. Just have fun with it I always say.

          • VinnyFromIndy

By “we” do you mean the other paid trolls that come here to inject lies and propaganda into these discussion threads?

          • Sebastian Klay

Who is paying anybody to do this? I always hear this but no one ever substantiates it. I don’t need to be paid to bash you people. The stories are propaganda to begin with. 6 months from now when euc handouts are a distant memory, you losers will still be trolling the net looking for the euc tooth fairy. I won’t be here to kick you around — you can be miserable with each other at that point.

          • VinnyFromIndy

If you are not paid to be a troll that just makes you even more pathetic. You have serious mental issues if you get your jollies kicking desperate people around. I think you are a sociopath.

          • Sebastian Klay

I detest whiners and govt handout junkies. if I don’t feed the trolls–you won’t eat.

          • FedUpInNJ

But WE ALL detest YOU! GO away! Go lick Boehner’s balls again!

          • Sebastian Klay

that’s probably what you need to do….you’re the b–ch that needs something from him

        • aaaa aa

Not Nonsense, what about all the 8 jobs bills the House sent to the Senate with no results.Take a look at them,3 of them are not that bad of an idea.BOTH parties are playing games.I agreed that the Republicans were more to blame (70 percent),but the dems hold the other (30 percent) .Again if the dems cared so much, why did they first deal with the UKRAINE,DOCTORS AND JUDGES first this week. Why didnt the dems force it into the farm bill, why didnt the dems use their magic pen like they did with the minimum wage? Neither side care about getting this passed.
Half a dozen concessions you say?
If you remember these are the same exact concessions that were brought up in January by the Republicans, but the Dems refused..Now they accepted, but the House doesnt like them now?
Both sides have issues.Read all the facts since January

          • VinnyFromIndy

I am keenly aware of what the GOP has offered in the way of jobs bills. They have actually passed more than you stated. The one thing that the GOP does in ALL these bills is include something that simply will not pass the Senate or will be vetoed by the President. They include things like the repeal of the ACA outright or the repeal of the individual mandate or some other bit of draconian nonsense. They do not do these things because they want to help the average American. They are including outrageous amendments because they believe that people might actually believe they want to help which is not even remotely their goal. They WANT misery and economic hardship. They have worked for that since 2010 when they gained control of the House.

    • Oni Mtz
  • Iwojo

the heck with more unemployment payouts … let’s stop the amnesty push and open up avenues for U.S. manufacturing and energy productions. There ya go, problem solved …

  • elf

The Democrats blame the Republicans. The Republicans blame the Democrats. It’s way past time to end this childish pissing contest and do the right thing for more than 2 million people who are suffering the consequences. Please send your messages to Boehner…www.speaker.gov/contact

    • Brian

I just sent a message to Boehner but I am sure he will never see it much less read it. It is a shame what he and his GOP colleagues are doing to this country. I really never followed the government but since I am one of those people suffering right now from losing their EUC benefits I started to watch the Senate and the House sessions on C-Span. What an eye opener it was. It was like watching young children bicker back and forth. The Democrats are for the American people and the Republicans are all about large corporations and money in their pocket. It really is a shame. The only way to fix the problem is to get the Republicans out of office in the mid terms. I will definitely be there to vote in November and hopefully more will get out and make a change.

      • Chet Starling

Keep filing your claim it will pass next week if and after everyone floods the states claiming systems, if everyone would have keep claiming to begin with, Boehner has no argument, never quit filing for benefits it’s the only way to gauge unemployment #’s.
Additionally, his 9-job bills now has no weight as he does not even know who is unemployed

        • jimv8673

My state stopped accepting claims on Dec. 28th 2013.
trust me the entire unemployment system thinks the unemployed are lazy worthless worms.

          • Chet Starling

They must allow you to report your looking for work and unemployed regardless of EUC or anything else. I would file a complaint with DOL

          • Sebastian Klay

There is no dol law that says states have take your information. these are states matters. some states may allow it.

          • Chet Starling

I’m not surprised Pelosi’s State hides unemployment #’s this way as Ried’s state advised its citizens to quit claiming March 1st to lower there #’s.
You are right some matters invoke states rights but, not when federally funded are involved as is the case hereunder.
I, must ask why would you not want to know the real #’s?

          • jimv8673

so how the hell are they gonna figure out who to pay, in the unlikely event that the EUC is reinstated??

          • Chet Starling

If you don’t keep your Base Year (BY) and/or alternate base year (ABY) state claim alive by REPORTING WEEKLY REGARLESS OF CHECK, they are gong to send you a bunch of bi-weekly claim forms, process and pay you in a couple months.
Get counted and avoid this crap, this is what is overlooked hereunder, I filed my weekly claims, kept my job search log as did most Nevadan’s despite not receiving a check this entire time, it’s there fault for not advising you to do the same.

          • Sebastian Klay

positively uniikely….at that point they won’t have to figure anything.

          • Sebastian Klay

there is no active federal ue program or federal funds available. the program ended. its all a state matter now…each state has their own set of rules. inundating the system for a cause is not constructive and states don’t need that burden. Most are realistic that euc is not restarting.

          • Chet Starling

California’s refusing to count it’s unemployed will change I’ll personally see it through litigation and/or legislation.
You still have not answered the underlying question why don’t you want to know the real unemployment #’s?

          • Sebastian Klay

My life is not or will not be affected by the any ue number….its not an issue with me
but for you — you think its a way to increase the euc handouts chance of restarting….very shallow and irresponsible reason.

          • Chet Starling

No I am just sick of politicians only telling 1/2 the story as your state does with unemployment, look above other states don’t shut out there citizens moreover, we don’t cater to the illegals like your state does.
Those people in fact could not file for a claim because they have no SSN. California is the largest welfare state in America and your home.

          • Sebastian Klay

actually i’m here for the weather and the great money making opportunities.

          • kasia54

It’s not an issue for Sebastian/Marcus because he never got approved in the first place! Haha! That’s why he’s trolling all over these boards kicking those who are the collateral damage of a greedy government. Pay it no mind!

          • kasia54

Um, no, wrong again, Marcus. Both Dems and Republicans were on board to move forward with an extension in December so the states kept allowing certification after the cutoff date. Dummy. Your parent’s basement must have a lot of mold. It’s seeping into your brain.

          • Tamara Stage

Let me ask a question. If you can’t let them know that your still unemployed, then please tell me how they figure out the unemployment rate? O wait, never mind the unemployment rate did go down after EUC ended because some states aren’t allowing people to claim… gotcha so the unemployment rate is wrong. Thank you for pointing out the numbers are wrong.

          • Sebastian Klay

govt statistics are never right. you just take all available and come up with something that can be sold to dupes like you

          • Tamara Stage

Where are you from? I can still claim and I ended on Dec. 28

          • jimv8673

            Indiana

        • Sebastian Klay

you can’t file for something that doesn’t exist. you can’t open new claims each week.

          • Diane Dilligaf

Sortry your incorrect, yes you are told to keep filing every week.

          • Chet Starling

Thank god I’m not the only one, if everyone would have or I, guess now could have kept filing Boehner and States like the crab Sebastian’s would not be opposing the retro active benefits the real reason Boehner won’t extend.
Everyone, keep filing and if your state refuses contact DOL

          • DD

At least someone knows what they are talking about. I live in Ohio and even after they said we were to stop filing I have called in every week and filed. And it denies my pay. But I am still in the system and my numbers count. If only everyone of us would do this. It would show are true numbers and not the ones they make up. Good luck to everyone. It is just so sad that the politicians have forgotten who they work for. And just for their information its not the country’s over seas that they are quick to send aid to.

          • Tamara Stage

How much you really don’t know.

          • Sebastian Klay

there is no euc….what part of that don’t you understand.

          • Sebastian Klay

keep dreaming there will be the euc tooth fairy. keep wasting your time – time you could use getting a job. you morons are getting more delusional and stupid by the day.

          • kasia54

Still living in the parent’s basement, huh Marcus? Poor you. Sad, lonely little troll.

          • kasia54

Oh here we go again — Sebastian Klay is a long time troll. Ignore his comments.

        • FedUpInNJ

System stopped letting me claim in Feb so not sure if this is correct for all states Chet :)

          • Chet Starling

I guess so, below and above you will find out Indiana and California also stopped letting citizens be counted other states not so much I would guess if you have a GOP Governor you can’t file and if you have a Democrat Governor you can file, a circus of a balancing act that for the most part does not count 2.2 million citizens as unemployed “looking for work” under the current state policies in totality.
I would contact DOL as suggested and demand all states have the same counting rules/laws, there really is no other responsible way to determine what jobs are in demand or in decline and what needs to be stimulated by congress.

          • Crystal Rae Adams

Me too. I file in Ohio and go figure the Unemployment office decided to stop letting me file online and then on 2/14/2014 they said I cannot file again until the bill goes through. Seems to me the government created the problem, not me.

    • Chet Starling

Those 2 million people need to file their state claims by weeks end to be counted and disprove the unworkable theory. This is the problem everyone quit claiming skewing the #’s. This is where all of you are exactly right both parties are at fault, everyone must always claim regardless of checks, it’s your right and unlawful for your state to refuse.
It’s not only Boehner, ask Reid why Nevada told it’s citizens to quit claiming March 1st., merely to skew the #’s, there all idiots, until everyone just blankets the claims lines no can come up any reasonable solution because they don’t know the problem, classic government.

      • jimv8673

You cant file your vouchers when they have been taken offline, and youre locked out of filing.

        • Chet Starling

I was afraid this was the case in many states, citizens don’t realize unemployment programs have changed over the years not to help but to skew #’s win elections, barter other legislation.
All Americans must be counted, much like the questionable Affordable Care Act, all uninsured are counted, not taken offline, oops wait a minute that did happen.
I would urge you to contact DOL as in Washington State you can file a claim regardless and be counted it should be that way everywhere to accurately curtail the problems.

          • jimv8673

I contacted my state unemployment office and was told that there were no means to claim euc payments that dont exist. So i guess i will end up forked some more, but not totally, because i intend to cash out to the max every credit card i have and not repay, work forever more for cash, and never pay another penny of taxes, state or federal, never have a bank account, that can be tapped, they cant get blood out of a turnip. Everything i own outright in someone else name. This country makes me ill.

          • Chet Starling

It’s unfortunate some states count the unemployed and some don’t if I lived in your state I would do the same and get the hell out of there.

        • Tamara Stage

Where are you from? I can still go on and claim even with the program ended.

        • Crystal Rae Adams

I cannot file either. I am in Ohio.

          • jimv8673

I really do think its the states way of trying to cheat folks, even if they do pass this bill before 2019, the states will drag it out some more, or simply say you dont qualify anymore. This country sucks when it comes to caring for its own people.

      • Foxy

I can’t claim. They stop the certification in Michigan

    • Annita Davis

I have sent messages to all concerned and have never even gotten a robo reply. All I can do is just keep putting one foot in front of the other until I can no longer walk!

  • VinnyFromIndy

I hope all Americans understand that it did not have to be this way in this country over the last few years. The fact is that is has been the Republican Party that has worked very hard to make things as bad as they possibly could in terms of the economy and jobs. They have obstructed every single bit of legislation that could have remotely helped Americans get back on their feet. They have spent the last two years in the House voting to repeal the ACA FIFTY TIMES. They would craft legislation that would appear to help the economy but would include pieces they knew were doomed to failure and would never make it through the Senate let alone be signed by the President.

In short, the GOP has done everything in their power to make Americans lives worse hoping that they would gain a political advantage in the next election. These facts are undeniable for anyone paying attention. Throwing millions into abject poverty by denying these benefits is all part of their game plan. )Ver just the last few months, they have thrown the poor, veterans and the unemployed to the wolves. This is TENS OF MILLIONS OF AMERICANS whose lives have PURPOSELY been made much worse because of the GOP.

The GOP is a cancer on America and even you folks that are still working and scraping by should be very aware that you are just a firing or a disaster away from being under the iron boot heel of the GOP. They simply do not care what happens to you or your families. I hope all of you remember this when you vote in November. Voting against these monsters is the only way to try to make America just a little bit better for average Americans. I wish all of you the best of luck!!!!!

    • Rick

We need to get past who’s fault it is. I am Democratic voter for the most part, but I don’t think Democrats are innocent in this, or other things. The fact is though, it’s pointless to go back & forward about this stuff pointing fingers. We need to just all pull together, in spite of differences.

I understand the whole absurd maintaining the party-line thing, but these out-of-touch Congressmen need to understand that they are playing politics with people’s immediate lives right now. Unlike much of the legislation before them right now, there is a real need for urgency with the unemployment extension. Many of these Congressmen either are so out-of-touch with the working class that they can’t understand people’s urgency, or they simply don’t care.

Some of these Congressmen imply that the unemployed are lazy and not trying to find work. Meanwhile these Congressmen take vacations every month, and then have the nerve to get cranky when it’s even suggested that they actually put in some extra effort by working over the weekend, in order to complete the agendas on their calendar.

As much as I love my country, this Congress is a disgrace.

      • VinnyFromIndy

If you truly want this extension bill passed, you would be wasting your efforts trying to convince Democrats to sign on. It is almost if not completely UNANIMOUS among Democrats in Congress to pass this bill. You can certainly offer that BOTH parties are to blame, but that would be a lie and counter productive to the millions that desperately need help.

I am not pointing out that the GOP is to blame out of desire to whack Republicans, but I am doing so because that is why the bill has been obstructed and writing or calling Democrats to pass the bill is monumental waste of effort because they have been trying for months to pass this bill.

        • Tamara Stage

Am I the only one confused by this?

  • Gary E

40 republicans are not for working class families. VOTE THEM OUT.

  • Chet Starling

Why are all of you not claiming still? This is your states excuse and Boehner’s excuse for not moving forward with extension moreover, it displays how meaningless the 9- job house packages are as now states and congress allege we don’t know who is still unemployed OK, so who can you target retraining and Jobs pkgs?
If your state told you to quit filing claims, file a complaint with the Department of Labor (DOL). You all continuing to file is the only way to gauge unemployment regardless of eligibility, it is YOUR RIGHT to continue t file and be counted and responsibility. If you file this week, next week we will see if it’s actually “unworkable” and if extension does not go through KEEP CLAIMING so this issue never comes up again and all are counted and not frivolously alleged to have stopped looking for work.
NC lost 77,000 jobs since extension shortfall, yet unemployment rates fell, only because you all quit being counted, file every week even with pt. work, FILE, FILE, FILE it’s the only ay to truly start at the root and grow without guessing who is now unemployed.
States and Boehner are full of it regarding it being workable they just don’t want to work.

    • Grace

In my state you have to have a claim form to file with. My state has stopped giving out the claim forms. No form, no claim.

      • Chet Starling

What State? I would contact the Department of Labor (DOL) and file a complaint as its unlawful to refuse an unemployment claim regardless of eligibility it’s the only way to be counted and determine what job skills are in demand, simply unlawful.

        • Sebastian Klay

There is no euc program. that ended. how can file for something that is non existent?

          • Chet Starling

Your not filing for the actual program, your simply exercising your right to be counted and if, any EUC program does come about legislators like Boehner and state commissioners and directors can’t claim what there claiming citing you among others as not looking for work but, you are, your just not reporting it likewise, being counted to responsibly enact a job pkg.
EUC relies heavily on % rates 2.2 million citizens quit claiming just because no check shows up that skews the #’s and knowledge of what jobs are in demand and decline.
File a claim today and be counted your state must accept it.

          • Sebastian Klay

no they don’t. there is no law that compels them to do this. you’re getting misinformation or making things up. You can file a claim anytime, they don’t have to set up an account for you though. you just want to bog down the ue system and many states aren’t having that.

          • Chet Starling

WAC 192-110-001Agency filings affecting this section May the department refuse to accept my claim, appeal or petition?
            (1) Except as provided in subsection (2) of this section, no employee or agent of the department may refuse to accept your claim, a signed appeal, or a petition properly filed under WAC 192-04-170 relating to any program administered by this department regardless of the employee or agent’s opinion concerning its merits.
            (2) You must provide the department with your name and Social Security account number in order to file a claim for benefits.

          • Chet Starling

            Now what

          • Chet Starling

Mr. Klay all you need is a SSN and a name to be counted yes they may deny your claim but your counted this does not bog down anything, it’s every ones right

          • Sebastian Klay

Right or no right….I don’t think people want to waste their time doing something like that. I don’t think you know how it works. most of these people are already in the system. multiple claims or sigh ups are not allowed.

          • Chet Starling

Actually, I, have successfully litigated against Washington States Unemployment Commissioner on several occasions and know exactly how it works, you don’t claim you don’t get counted, each system is weekly so your not in the system if you don’t report each week.
You fail to realize this is why Boehner is crying, and why no one has any idea who is unemployed.

          • Sebastian Klay

yes by now most are no longer in the euc system…the program will not be restarted, renewed, so I guess you could if you wanted start a new claim and be a statistic. you’re overthinking this euc stuff — euc is gone.

          • Chet Starling

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, we will see next week after everyone become a “statistic” by exercising there rights to be counted, not paid, just counted, good day to you.

          • Sebastian Klay

they won’t be doing that in my state. We don’t allow for frivolous claims.

          • Chet Starling

What state? so I can alert DOL

          • Sebastian Klay

California does not send out claim forms when you have no money to claim. DOL will not change their mind.

        • Kate

Ohio was pretty good about it. They let me file til February 21st. I called them last week and they said retro is no problem. They have done it before they’ll do it again. So boehner lied in his home state so sad.

    • Oni Mtz
      • Chet Starling

Petitions don’t work, spread the word everyone must file a claim this week and be counted much more teeth than petition as states will scramble to process claims ahead of the alleged “unworkable” claims to come if legislation passes, it’s immediate action, file your claim today this will apply pressure moreover, truth in unemployment #’s

  • Oni Mtz
    • houstonbeachgirl

      Already did baby! Thanks.

  • Bob Polen

its about time , lets get it done now…. let them go 90 days with no income……….

    • Sebastian Klay

      get er done!

    • Al Elbert

The Senate is wasting its time. This bill will never pass the House and they know it. It’s wasteful and irresponsible. Mr. Boehner will make sure it doesn’t. He makes me proud to be a Conservative Republican,

      • Annita Davis

Well al, I’m a lifeling conservative republican but that has nothing to do with not being able to find a job. You’re a horrid example of the grand old party. Shame on you.

  • Carol Findlay

Weekend work is a ‘threat’ to politicians??? To people who have actually worked a job where you had to SHOW UP, that’s not a threat at all. These politicians who only work one day out of eight, and only work 1/3 of the year, and have more vacations than a Kardashian and more recesses than a kindergartener and more hiatuses than a tv actor and more retreats than a backwater pastor have NO BUSINESS calling anyone else on earth lazy. A person standing in a welfare line puts in more work and more time than any politician.

When the blazes are these lazy parasites going to vote on money that is for americans in america???? Go to work!! You’re lucky enough to have jobs and you don’t even work! Get to work!

    • Annita Davis

      Carol. Well said.

  • Al Elbert

I hope this bill doesn’t even make it to the House floor for a vote. It’s wasteful, immoral, un-American and unconstitutional! More than two million lazy bums are sitting on their behinds waiting for a handout they do not deserve. Congress should rethink their priorities. There are more important things to worry about such as providing tax cuts to large corporations and the wealthy, who actually contribute towards the financial wellness of this country. Mr. Boehner, please do what you can to prevent this nonsense bill from passing.

    Sincerely,
    A loyal Conservative Republican

    • Chicken

I hope you become unemployed soon

      • Al Elbert

Such an immature response. Proud of yourself?

        • Chicken

Far from immature… More like reality… I hope you get to experience what the long term unemployed do.. Very soon

        • Kate

How bout you? Are you proud of yourself. More tax breaks for the wealthy really? Don’t they get enough. Shame on you for not wanting to help others. Mom and dad didn’t teach you much did they

    • mrmano_0

please do not dignify this troll’s response.

      • Chicken

Ha how is that a troll response? HAHAHAHA!

      • Al Elbert

You have a Confederate flag for a picture and I’m the bad guy? Good one.

        • Sebastian Klay

If you want to be successful and believe in personal responsibility then yes you are the bad guy around here. You should be ashamed of yourself picking on these “unfortunates” like you are. They’ll work their karma on you.

          • Al Elbert

Unfortunates? I call them losers who cry on the Internet about not getting the free handouts they don’t deserve instead of actually looking for work. By that I mean all two million of them. This bill is already dead and they know it.

          • Sebastian Klay

they’re sensitive to being called losers…but yes they are

          • VinnyFromIndy

I hope all Republican laid off workers note that this is your conservative brother here calling you a lazy bum regardless of how many decades you may have worked. I can only imagine the gut punch for you Republicans that are desperate and without a job to read this kind of BS from a jacka$$ like Al. You are now the part of the unwashed and undeserving. YOU are a moocher and taker to Al and the rest of the GOP in America.

I hope all readers note that Al is the perfect modern conservative. He could not care less about the fate of you or your families.

Trillions for needless wars – Al is a big supporter. Helping his neighbors and fellow Americans keep from being thrust into abject poverty – go pound sand!

          • Sebastian Klay

I don’t see many (none) conservatives on this page whining about more handouts. you might want to transfer your rant to drudge or red state…see what they think

          • Al Elbert

If you criticize our government for spending money towards this nation’s security, your citizenship should be revoked. I, on the other hand, do not want money being wasted on two million unproductive unemployed losers. I see that you’re having a tough time understanding that and I forgive you.

          • VinnyFromIndy

Well Al, that would be because you are the perfect modern conservative. You are profoundly stupid and arrogantly ignorant. I hope any Republican laid off workers reading this thread note that AL here thinks you are a loser regardless of how many decades you have worked. He is perfectly fine with throwing you and your family to the wolves. If Al were given a choice, he would gleefully spend a trillion dollars to fight a war that is based on lies and that kills over 4000 Americans and a million Iraqis over keeping millions of Americans from sliding into poverty. He is the modern Republican Party. I hope all of you desperate conservatives understand that to Al and the rest of the GOP, you folks are undeserving moochers and takers. Is this truly the party you want to continue to support?

    • Chet Starling

There you go AL, you wanted it you got it 70 billion to Ukraine good work.

    • houstonbeachgirl

      Yeah, a Loyal A$$hole!!!

      • Al Elbert

Well, i can see no one is monitoring comments on this site for personal attacks. Ok, then.

    • VinnyFromIndy

Right here ladies and gents! This IS your modern Republican Party. Al is the perfect example of what you get when you vote for the GOP.

  • Tamara Stage

70 Billion dollars to the Ukraine and yet our own Americans are suffering…. simply sad.

    • Al Elbert

It is a priority to help a nation in need. it is wasteful and irresponsible to provide free handouts to two million, lazy, unemployed bums. This bill will not be signed into law.

      • Tamara Stage

Who are you to call the long term unemployed lazy bums? Do you know them as individuals…nope. Your right lets give money to another country so they can waste that money as other countries have in the past. Why is it so hard to care of our own first, and then help other countries.

      • Chet Starling

I here you in part but, the timing of the shortfall came simply at the wrong time, it will pass as soon as everyone calls and files there claims today and tomorrow and brings the %rate back inline to 8-9%
States are just avoiding counting everyone much like tax cuts to large corps. and the wealthy do to the economy by simply avoiding fare share payers like you.
        Make more pay more.

      • Tamara Stage

I would say by using your own words Al that there are 2 million long term unemployed in America, we are a country in need.

      • houstonbeachgirl

Hey Al, I wish you were standing in front of me right now. I’d show you how lazy I am, freak show!!

        • Al Elbert

Thanks but no thank you. Opening your legs or flashing me won’t intimidate me, honey.

          • houstonbeachgirl

            you a nasty ho dog.

          • Sebastian Klay

you can get kicked out the shelter with that attitude.

          • VinnyFromIndy

It should be noted that Al and Sebastian are NOT casual readers of this article and happened to make a comment. No, both of these guys are searching Google News to find stories about the bill to extend unemployment extensions and then coming to the threads to post all sorts of nasty lies, propaganda and hate. These men are sociopaths and get off on tormenting desperate people.

You can click on Sebatian’s name and see that he is relentlessly posting comments to upset the unemplyed. He is getting off on it. What sick, twisted human being.

          • Sebastian Klay

these losers always want to get violent and fight. losers are always making bad choices.

          • Annita Davis

You are not worth any more of any intelligent person trying to educate you. Its a worthless waste of time.

        • Annita Davis

          Right behind ya Houston! !!

      • Annita Davis

Excuse me? I’ve worked for over 30 years. Sometimes 2 and 3 jobs at once. No one complains about the generational welfare recipient that have NEVER worked.! All of us that need the benefits extended have WORKED to qualify for them and would love to work again if the job market wasn’t in the toilet. I wish karma and the rule of 3 on you. Then I hope no one has ANY compassion for you!

      • Kate

No sir we need to butt out and help our own people. Why is that so hard for you to grasp.

      • Charles Wilson

in my books, being unemployed doesnt make u a bum, maybe u never went to school so ill explain the meaning for a more constructive rant next time u wanna rant, bum means someone who has no life, has no zeal or will to work or contribute to society, these ppl on here are workers, if not they wont be qualified for unemployment. u should be casted in the sea where sharks can feed on ur useless body and mind.

    • Annita Davis

Yea and that vote for the Ukraine happened within a couple days. No arguments, no talk of where the money will come from. Unimaginable and enraging! !!!

  • jimv8673

Quit wasting your efforts Harry, the people of the USA are fed up with empty promises, and endless vacations taken at our expense. I for one couldnt give a rats patoot anymore. This country sucks so bad it could suck start every Harley Davidson, in existance.
All i wanna know now is when is someone gonna cap that worthless John B.

  • alexander jones

John Boehner and the GOP are un-American as you can get, they are
working for a new order. The American people are no concern to them. They are thinking
global, and the wealthy feel that they don’t need to rely on the American
economy. The proof is in the pudding, Unemployment
Extension vote Not Worrying House Republicans,
now that tell you everything. They just told us bluntly that they don’t give a
damn. It is now time for America to
stand up for its self, and we need American FIRST LEADERS, that work hard and
still knows about everyday life. We don’t need wealthy people who don’t walk in
the same shoes of the average American. WE NEED REAL LEADERSHIP FOR AMERICANS
    NOW!!!

  • horatio

Good article but I was laughing about the 24% draconian cuts to Dr’s comment. That was hilarious. That number only came about because a study on doctors said many routinely overbilled at least that much for work not done or ‘over examination’. One MD I met got caught for over billing of $200K.

  • rigoberto beltran

savings gone , 401k gone , year and a half looking for jobs , when you apply online they don’t have to tell you “we’ll cal youl” your chances are almost as good as winning the lottery .

  • rigoberto beltran

If boehner and his buddies fire the 2 or 3 people that each have carrying their brief cases , that could pay for at least part of the extension , boehner “come on come on be a good boy , carry your own brief case I know you can do it , I’ll be proud of you ” and also get laid , you look like you need it as bad as we need you to your job so we can afford looking for one too .

  • Disposal mind

You would think that having it pass the procedural vote it should pass the final vote by the same margin otherwise it would appear a few senators are playing games with the American people by giving them fals hope that the bill will pass the senate. Its bad enough having to next fight the Boehner gestapo in the house over it next without having to deal with a few crybabies in the senate.

  • J Gravel

I just sent an email to Boehner explaining my disappointment and asking him to approve the unemployment extension. You can go to his website and voice your concern. http://www.speaker.gov/

    • Tamara Stage

Do you think he will read it? Do you think he cares?

      • Annita Davis

Nope. He only cares about the next election just like the rest of them. Damn them all!!!!

  • Elizabeth

Quick question…. What can “Our President” do for us? I am beyond overwhelmed. What happened to the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave? What happened to the statement on the Statue of Liberty? What happened to America the Beautiful? What happened to being a proud American? What happened to fighting for justice?
Everyday one more person is losing their home or car due to non payment while it is no fault of their own. I can guarantee that all the people unemployed if they were offered a JOB they would take it without thinking twice. Who making $50,000 a year is going to settle for $405 a week?
Sorry but I don’t know what else to do or say. How much more do I have to humble myself and ask for some assistance to just try to make ends meet.

  • Mike Z

WHY would I , or ANYONE who works in a high tech field want to stay on Unemployment Insurance Benefits which don’t equal 1 days’ pay compared to what I/we make when we work? I WANT to go back to work. I CAN’T WAIT to get back to work. Unfortunately you Boehner/BONEHEAD/A**H**** and all the other EGOTISTICAL MANIACS are too busy playing with people’s lives to actually DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE TO HELP THE CITIZENS OF THE US DO WHAT WE KNOW HOW TO DO BEST AND THAT’S TO WORK DOING WHAT WE KNOW BEST IN OUR OWN WAYS TO HELP BUILD OUR ECONOMY AND BRING IT BACK TO WHERE IT BELONGS! AND JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW, THE MONEY FOR MY UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS COME OUT OF MY PAY EVERY WEEK OF EVERY YEAR THAT I WORK! WE FUND OUR OWN BENEFITS THERE IS NO COST TO FUND AS YOU KEEP POINTING OUT! STFU AND DO SOMETHING TO HELP THIS COUNTRY BETTER ITSELF RATHER THAN HELP BURY IT LIKE YOU ARE SO ANXIOUS TO DO!

  • http://batman-news.com Erasmo Nieves

this is my first week in a new job i dont get paid until next week i dont know if i still need to file next week..plust i dont want to lose the retroactive pay.what should i do

    • Charles Wilson

just add the amount u made in the section where it asks u for earning report. they will deduct it nd pay u the difference

  • Donald L Campbell

Do you think the Senate or House, wonders why the crime rate has gone up across this country, do they realize people are starving, and losing their self respect!.

  • Annita Davis

Why is it so easy for our public servants to vote to send money overseas? While we citizens are rapidly desending into abject poverty. They just don’t care nor van they wrap their narrow little minds around what its like to worry about which if any bills we gonna pay. They call us parasites but they should look into the mirror!!!

  • Annita Davis

Another stupid aspect the Boehner keeps throwing out there is “how to pay for it”. OMG that mames me madder than anything. I wish we could add up all the free foreign aid that has been sent out since December. And they send it to people who hate us. Our, “and I use that term reservedly” needs a do over. We need to send all if the rich bast#*^s home and replace them with plumbers, chefs, teachers, construction workers, single parents etc…. . I’m so ready to throw my hands up and give up. Im out of options. So tired of being a buden on my kids. At this point in my life it should be the other way around.

  • Moshika

Those of you who “think” unemployment has “‘decreased” somehow, most of you either have money or jobs. However what you do not realize is the fact “unemployment” has shown a decrease simply because of those, like myself (by the way; I only received 12 weeks @ $187/wk) who lost a small amount of extended benefits no longer collect benefits — therefore — add the math — of course unemployment is on the decrease.
I have worked hard my whole life — asked very little from “our government” have a decent I.Q. and experience in the workforce — however; Nevada still ranks #2 (outranked by Rhode Island 3 points) – I am in an area whereas there is little work –sadly many businesses have shut their door or filed bankruptcy because of the economy and the fact, since the new freeway has gone through — so has visitor’s.

So, those of you who work, have an income of some kind — be grateful — do not put those of us down simply because of some circumstances beyond our control and no, in this area, people are still losing their homes — the economy is not picking up except maybe in the larger cities; however I have noted “local Politian’s are reaping in the loss of others” — There are those, like any bad apple in the barrel that much like welfare, will collect unemployment and never look for work. I, am not one of them —
CA cannot mark itself as #1 in unemployment — recently I read the L.A. area has more than 10 million people residing there — But, there are jobs in Los Angeles, however picking up and moving to a state whereas the cost is 10x more than where I live is not feasible. My income at this time is widows benefits of $557.00. Now tell me how many of you can live on $577.00? You begin with having a roof over your head and no luxuries — Obamacare (joke) at least I qualify for Medicaid as a single adult — but the catch is — very few doctors or hospitals accept Medicaid and I thank God in the heavens to a point I still have my health.

Again, be grateful to those of you who believe you are above those who are stricken with a loss of income and loss of jobs that you can make ends meet. When you have little, you realize just how cruel our government and people can be. Then, there are the handfuls that are the exception that shows mankind is not all bad, or filled with hate and greed.

    • Sebastian Klay

187 @ week means you weren’t a high earner anyway.

Sebastian Klay — you are very correct about not being a “high earner” but I earned enough to raise two grandbabies giving them the things I sacrificed to make sure they have. You don’t have to be a “high earner” to be happy — obviously — you, Sebastian Klay make much more than myself, but to put me down means your life — for lack of better words — sucks.

I am all for helping others… but to we need to help our own first.

Lets see The Ukraine needs more money so with a blink of an eye they get are congress to vote and they get the money. The people that elected these old yahoos need help from their government because there is no work and they could care less. I worked for 20 yrs in early childhood and because the congress couldn’t come to an agreement and there was a shutdown Head Start lost funding (a program that benefits the poor) I lost my job. Now congress says there is no need to help the people that cant pay rent electric or go to a doctor because they have no insurance and its not congresses fault. Why should they care the have lifetime medical full pension and vacation at least once a month. Oh wait their millionaire friends now wont qualify for extended benefits. This country needs to worry about the citizens in US snd then let the world take care of their own

guys lets keep it real here, this guys all work together, one mins they reached a deal, next min they in recess, another min they trying harder, next they say boehner is not cooperating nd on and on, im not buying it, they all working together no one is on our side. All this stuff is just so we can think they ones are the good guys, trust me they are not doing anything for us behind those closed doors.

    Here’s the deficit history on Hussein Obama’s watch – over the last four years:2009: $1.41 Trillion 2010: $1.29 Trillion 2011: $1.30 Trillion 2012: $1.10 Trillion

Even $17 trillion in debt can’t stop the US government from wasting $1.5 million to study why female homos are obese and male homos are not

I wonder if any of them read these comments.. There so many of them on every article that is published about this atrocity.

  • kasia54

And why would Congress punish the unemployed when it was their greed and decisions to bail out the greedy bankers & wall st. with MY MONEY without asking me first/ We need to overthrow this greedy government and get the people to vote — that’s what our founding fathers wanted for the US. But with “trickle up” economics, crooked bankers that collapsed the housing industry and corporations using welfare to sock away offshore instead of circulate into the economy, the UNEMPLOYED GET SHAFTED? Why do you think they’re unemployed????? Help all of them now, you greedy sob’s.

I agree with everything comment I read. I really don’t understand this. I worked at my jobs for the city and lost it due to no fault of my own. I’ve been looking for a job and can’t find one. I was even turned down by McDonalds. McDonalds?????? I lost my apartment and moved in with my parents. The people who are causing delays for unemployment needs to walk in the shoes of the average working man. One thing that gets me is that Obama says he will pass the bill regardless. When Bush was in office if he wanted a bill passed he did it regardless who went against it.

  • AJB

This is simply a disgrace! People that have paid into unemployment and have been in the workforce should be able to rely on their government to support them in a crisis. No one asked to lose their job. Our country spends too much time and money on other countries before it helps out their own!

So, after months of complaining by millions on boards just like this, NOTHING is accomplished, STILL. When are people going to band together and actually make a stand here?? You do realize that as long as we remain dutiful sheep, that NOTHING will ever be done because the government DOES NOT CARE. They get their checks every week, regardless of how many starving crying babies go to sleep that way every nite that this is allowed to continue.

  • jimv8673

As an ex military man, I am available to discuss this with any organization that forms to take a stand.
