Portman Never Pressed Boehner on Unemployment Extension

Rob Portman, who provided the key vote to pass an unemployment extension in the Senate, never pressed Speaker John A. Boehner to hold a vote on it in the House.

Portman told Gannett he didn’t try to press Boehner, his fellow Ohio Republican, to put the bill on the House floor because it wouldn’t have been a productive move.

“He’s hearing it from all sides within his own conference, which he has to keep together,” Portman said. “And that’s got to be his priority.”

We highlighted the Portman-Boehner split on an extension of emergency unemployment compensation in March.

The two lawmakers each have national stature. Portman was strongly considered by Mitt Romney to be his running mate, and Portman has regularly been the debate sparring partner for GOP presidential candidates.

Portman was one of the Republican senators who blocked the unemployment extension Feb. 6, when it fell short by a single vote.

It took two more months for the Senate to pass a five-month compromise with Portman’s blessing April 7.

Boehner called the retroactive bill unworkable to implement and demanded that the White House propose adding new job-creating measures.

Portman isn’t the only one who hasn’t phoned Boehner to pressure him to act.

President Barack Obama hasn’t called Boehner either. Obama has tweeted and urged his supporters to call.

Labor Secretary Thomas E. Perez has offered to negotiate a compromise with Boehner but nothing has come from that either.

There have been a number of long-shot scenarios floated to try and revive the unemployment benefits, but the Senate left for the Memorial Day recess without any of them materializing.

The House meanwhile has no plans to act this week.

Republicans haven’t proposed an alternative to their own, and only a handful of them have urged Boehner to act.

About 2.8 million workers have lost Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits since they expired in December.

  • Terry Williams

So there you have it. Window dressing from a politician whose state has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country for the good of the Republican party at the expense of citizens.

    • Debbie Niemeyer

      What’s another Harry Reid?

      • Terry Williams

You could be right, but this article establishes what is real and not simple speculation. Not taking away from your intuition though as it should be questioned why Reid did not include this with the other measures that had to pass.

  • David

Boehner works for the Koch brothers and only takes instructions from them. The Koch brothers have instructed Boehner not to pass the unemployment bill for as long as he can’t get the Boehner/Koch Keystone Pipeline approved.

You are just a mouthpiece for plutocrats and somehow you thought it was cool to come on here and blast the nonsensical idea that giving away more tax cuts to the rich is the right way to fix the lack of 3 million jobs including half a million veterans. You’re scum and need to seriously reconsider your own citizenship.

    • mabramso

Hmmm, unemployment extension in exchange for Keystone Pipeline. Gee, that almost sounds like … a compromise.

But from the article, it doesn’t sound like EITHER side is in any hurry to pass the extension … no one is talking to each other.

      • Terry Williams

That is not a compromise that is pure corruption. The purported 42,000 jobs that was alleged in that bill is a down right lie. It will not even create any jobs in the states where the Republican legislators reside who sponsored the bill. This alone should represent enough to impeach them as it represents an intentional misrepresentation.

        • The Crying Boozer Tangerine

american anti corruption act, and yes expulsion for corrupt little Johnny would be great.

        • Ashleigh Smith

There is a petition for the emergency unemployment insurance at whitehouse.gov. They have 4,800 signatures. They need 100,000 signatures by June 18th.

        • mabramso

Ah, so everything you disagree with is corruption. That explains a lot. Everything about politics IS misrepresentation, and anyone who tells you different is selling something. If they impeached everyone who misrepresents, then there would be no one left to govern.

          • Terry Williams

Please do not attempt to put words in my mouth. I am pretty capable of handling that. No I do not believe that the common level of misrepresentation reached the level displayed here.

          • mabramso

Well, just because there are claims about a bill before Congress that you don’t agree with does not make it corruption. Heck, the ACA was more outlandish — by orders of magnitude — in its claims than keystone. And most people with a brain knew it!

          • Terry Williams

ACA is a republican initiative. Even so, why follow it up with an outlandish and purposefully misrepresented legislation that seeks to leverage against the unfortunate? That is as low as it gets.

          • mabramso

That is COMPLETELY disingenuous. The only thing Republican about the ACA is that some obscure think-tank proposed the individual mandate (which is a small part of the law) many years ago, after which no Republican IN FEDERAL OFFICE ever took seriously. I mean, the Democrats couldn’t even convince the 2 liberal Republican Senators from Maine to vote for it.

And what is misrepresented now? Not a thing. Heck, we have death panels at the VA, which is the closest thing to ObamaCare that he been fully instituted, and millions have lost their insurance and their doctors, EXACTLY how the GOP said they would. But the Democrats love sticking it to the middle class.

          • Terry Williams

It is based upon Romneycare. It has also allowed millions to acquire healthcare who otherwise would not have it. The increases and losses are companies responses to having to provide insurance as again they put profit over people. But, I was not for it anyways and the reactions are the administration’s fault for taking a “neo” approach. So I’m not going to waste any more time on this subject. If you wish to defend the republican’s actions as it relates to UI-extension despite the many..many…many republicans who too have been affected, then so be it. I do not put politics over people and avoid the jargon of those who do.

          • mrmano_0

Obamacare is so wonderful…the folks who put it together and approved it…exempted themselves from it…but..but..but..

      • DerekJR321

Both sides had an opportunity to pass this. The chain smoking orange drunk could have brought the bill to the House floor. He refused. Then, the Republicans wanted to attach the unemployment bill to the “tax extenders” bill. Reid outright refused. Neither side cares at all what happens to the unemployed. I thank god every day that I found a good paying job. But I still check on this issue daily, because it is complete BS that this is going on in this country.

    • TJ

Boehner has all but said give us Keystone or the unemployed starve…

  • David

It is just too bad that the guy who threatened Boehner’s miserable life didn’t just go through with it. If he had done the job this bill would have already passed as Boehner is the only one standing in the way of the bill passing.

        • Right99

          I totally agree.

        • Herb Smith

So, exactly how do you think POTUS should get the House Republicans to pass this? We all know how much the House Republicans dislike and disrespect President Obama, so how does Obama persuade them to follow his leadership rather than Boehner, Cantor, Ryan? How do you think POTUS can change the minds of the House Tea Partiers who are sure those on unemployment insurance are a bunch of lazy loafers?

          • mabramso

In the art of negotiation, if you want the other side to give you something that they may not want to give, you have to offer something in return that THEY (NOT you) believe makes the resulting package BETTER than doing nothing. And that is the case here.

But keep in mind that the same thing applies to Obama. As long as Obama believes that doing nothing is better than doing ANYTHING the House GOP wants in return, NOTHING will change.

      • Wayne Heddinger

doesn’t matter…Obama has no authority to do nything except as congress

Are you serious? People ask to be laid off? You need to know how it works. Can you explain what a “good time” is? Enlighten me. What are all these unemployed doing that’s so fun? Payments go by your income, it’s only a portion. I was making $650 biweekly (1300 a month) down to 800. That’s a 500 dollar difference. That doesn’t account for losing health benefits, which depending on someone’s situation, can make our break them.
I was paying CASH to go to the Dr. I went back to a certification program. I couldn’t go anymore … (I’d be done right now) 5 days a week for 35 hrs. I still looked for employment, because I wanted to, & unemployment requires that I did.
2008- 2013 I was employed. The program was extended with no issues. I never attacked them. Jobs don’t just have unemployed people applying. It’s people that want change, people that want full time, and new graduates. So jobs are able to be picky…. too picky. They also are lazy, & have HR cut backs, so they use a software program that “scans” resumes for key words, they picked out. Maybe you have the skills, and used a different word, too bad.

          • mrmano_0

            being sarcastic

You aren’t supporting me! Count your blessings…with your attitude you better hope you don’t find yourself unemployed! Or maybe you should so you can see what it is like.

      • Annie Rose

This is the dumbest remark I have read.

      • alyssa terranova

Jim. .. By your logic, your working so much, but yet you still have time to comment right? Are you saying it’s “unfair” you have job? I don’t understand that reasoning.
Your not paying anyone BTW because it’s not extended, & your definitely not paying for people to sit online, because because your not supporting their Internet bill.
It kills me when people are against something that doesn’t help them personally. It’s the biggest problem in this country, because when an issue does come up that affects them, they wonder why there’s no one speaking out. I support gun rights, guess what? I’m not a gun owner. Why bother? Because any issue that threatens to take something away, that can hurt a group of people, it’s something I take seriously. If it was a debate about funding more prostate cancer research, I wouldn’t be against it, because I’m a woman. If it benefits society, the people in your community, you should care.

      • mc

Consider yourself blessed you have employment! We are online looking for work! that is the main way to find work these days, other than networking with people! We are not lazy and also can take breaks to have something to eat if we are lucky enough to have food to eat and are able to have the internet to job search, or mode of transportation to get to the library to look for work on their computers. Jim before the grace of God goes you. If you know of any job openings, please feel free to share them here as I am sure there are thousands and thousands of people that would love those jobs!!!!!

      • DerekJR321

Hey ifdiot.. I work now too. However I was one of the unemployed for a long time. I wouldn’t turn my back on them. YOU don’t pay a damn thing towards this. Maybe if you knew anything you would realize this. Employees pay into it, and the company that they were LET GO from (not fired) has to pay it too. So tired of hearing this same stupid comment over and over by people who know nothing. “Er meh gerd yer takin mah tax moneys”. First off.. do you even KNOW where your tax dollars go??? You think its to pay for things in this country? Think again. EVERY DOLLAR of your “taxes” goes to the Federal Reserve. Think I’m wrong? Look it up.

      • Bev

You sir, are an idiot. Most of us that lost our unemployment “INSURANCE” have worked for years upon years and never made a claim. So, we pay our freakin premiums for 20-30 years, finally make a claim, and then find out our insurance company can cancel our policy after only 26 weeks of benefits. What if your homeowner’s insurance did that to you? I bet you might be singing a different song then.

      • David Runyon

For you to make that statement is totally hideous.

  • Icare

It’s pretty obvious that this is just a smear campaign aimed at making all the long termed unemployed look like they are bunch of lazy and non caring people and just want to live off the government. But the fact is that the jobs are just not there!

In 2008, when everything went down hill because of corporate, wall street and government greed that had finally caught up with them, they have been looking for many ways as to where to lay the blame and not take responsibility for the problems they created.

John Boehner says the problem with passing the unemployment extension bill is that it is to tough.

I say to John Boehner “When The Going Gets Tough – The Tough Get Going” and John Boehner is obviously a real panty waist when it comes to being tough and is incapable to get going. We need to clean both houses this November of both parties and I pray they will allow some Real People that really care about our country and where big businesses, wall street and our government is taking us.

The writing is on the wall and time is running out for all the American People unemployed and employed.

The jobs are not there no matter what B.S. lies they claim as truth and it is only going to get worse!

The funding by big businesses to these trai-tors of the people will be told over and over again before the elections in November. The more people listen to these lies, the more people that will believe them. It’s human nature to believe lies over truth because it is easier. Believing the truth is tough, so don’t be a John Boehner! Be tough, get out of your comfort zone and do what you know to be the right thing to do!

Come November, vote as to how you believe inside yourselves and not what you hear on TV. Show these government clowns that you truly are smart and not a sheep-monkey that only follows the lies that are always broken when one of these clowns are elected.

    Tell your story here:

You know what I threw with it all. I have mission in mind. throw out the lesser of 2 evil out. yes both side are to blame. But this is much bigger then us. We cant let these low life take take us for granted. We the American people need to take back this courtry for America. The only way to do that is start with the Gop. We may have to suck it up and lose everything. but come out to the polls with a mighty roar and let those son of b. (All of the 37 gop in house and who ever in senate out) I don’t want to vote for the Dems but for now they are less of 2 evils. I’m sick of Fox, Gop, Dem, house, senate etc. I want our country back. also want it easy for Hillary when she wins in 2016. Don’t let them win. I building a website for us and would like some help with website. America is calling on us for help. We can’t let her down.

    • rollipolliolli

      its all mr boners fault

    • mabramso

Well, good luck with that. The Dems are probably going to get stomped in the Senate and lose a few seats in the House. They may gain a couple of governorships though. They are not in a good position right now.

      • Jim Altruist

I’ve noticed everyone is complaining about not getting unemployment blaming the GOP but not one is complained that Obama has not fixed the economy thus, they would have jobs and not need unemployment.

        • mabramso

Sure, but one is short-term and one is long-term, and I fail to see why our politicians can’t work on both. And yes, Boehner’s actions seem somewhat callous, but that is certainly nothing new in Washington! On the other side of the coin, the Democrats clearly WANT this as a campaign issue in an attempt to drive up turnout in the midterm elections.

I don’t think it will matter though in the Senate races, for example, because the GOP will have good turnout, and that is all they need in the red states to flip those seats — and that is all they need to flip the Senate. And if the Dems fail to turn out (which is pretty normal in 6th-year midterms), they will lose some purple states as well.

          • Dario Kohller

Political grandstanding and egoism has got in the way of any progress.

        • alyssa terranova

What is the “fix ” though? It’s hard to say. Right now it should be a priority, but what do people do today? Say there is an answer, it will still take time.

  • David

When the Somali pirates tried taking American’s as hostages we terminated their lives in short order. Boehner has over three million American political hostages and nobody cares.

  • David

If you took away the Koch brothers support (money) Boehner would collapse.

    • mabramso

How so? Boehner has been a Congressman for what, 24 years? That’s WAY longer than the Kochs have been active, and Boehner has yet to win less than 60% of the vote in any of his elections. Statistically, it doesn’t really look like the Kochs have mattered much at all — certainly not in re-election chances.

      • biggin

60% was before Boehner put 3 million Americans on the back burner

        • mabramso

Well, Boehner certainly STOMPED his tea party opponent in the GOP primary, and I don’t think Boehner will be spending much money fighting his Democrat opponent. In fact, I doubt the Democrat Party will give a dime to Boehner’s opponent, and that says a lot about the nature of his seat. But who knows? Perhaps if they spend a cool half a million, they can get Boehner a little under 60%.

    • Ray

      Keep dreaming.

  • im not lazy

He didn’t want to bring it up….well like I’ve said before your either part of the solution or part of the problem. How can the fate of over three million Americans rest on one fricken vote ? Stuffed suits with no compassion, no accountability, who are being over-paid and under-worked, that’s how. It’s too bad we don’t have the solidarity to vote none of the above !

    • mabramso

“How can the fate of over three million Americans rest on one fricken vote?” It doesn’t. People are not ENTITLED to an unemployment extension. It’s very unfortunate that the idiots in Washington cannot come to a compromise agreement, but if one’s life is ENTIRELY dependent on the mercy of the federal government, then this sort of political gridlock comes with the territory.

Compassion is in the eye of the beholder. I believe their supporters would say they have compassion for the taxpayer.

They do have accountability — it’s called elections — especially in the House, which election comes up every two years.

Overpaid and underworked? I think I would agree with you on that. How about cutting their salaries?

      • Ray

        Lol

        • Ralston Caldwell

Why do people get on to post, then ARGUE. State your position and move on. This is petty and childish. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Let it be
Anyway, this bill will pass before June 1st. And yes I know what the date is.

          • mrmano_0

            I’ll take that bet….

          • mrmano_0

            I’ll take that bet..

          • mrmano_0

and??…how is this going to pass before June 1st??…bet is still on..

          • Ray

            Really? Dork.

      • im not lazy

Yeah cutting their salaries would be a good start, or at least cutting their outrageous paid time off. The accountability part is after the election, not before, after they have dumped how many millions of dollars into their quest to supposedly serve the people. I have been a taxpayer all my life, I never had to file for u.i. until 08 which was after twenty five years in the work force. I have made six figures during the good times, and have settled for less than $9 an hr. recently. I do not feel entitled, and feel they should scrutinize the system to ensure people are actually looking for employment. But whether one vote is actually the reason the bill wasn’t passed, it still remains true that one person is responsible for it not being brought up to vote on in the first place. And all the people who get any form of government aid, food stamps, section eight housing, energy assistance, cash, where does that $ come from ? The taxpayers, but yet they don’t seem to scrutinize that so efficiently. Well in the eyes of this beholder I see the same old political posturing that has been going on in our nations capitol as long as I can remember, earmarks, lobbiests and big money rule what goes on and who gets theirs, as far as your vote goes, when your choice is who is the lesser evil, unfourtunatly you don’t really find out until after they have proven themselves to be a true politian, which nine times out of ten is disapointment at best.

        • mabramso

I don’t think I disagree with you on anything you say, except to point out that there are multiple ways for bills to be brought up on the House floor, and Boehner scheduling it is only one such option. Another one is a discharge petition, which requires a simple majority of members. There ARE enough Republicans who would probably sign a discharge petition if the Democrats initiated it. But so far, I haven’t seen that tried, and I wonder why. Perhaps that is because they don’t want the extension because it would eliminate a big hammer they have over the GOP in their political advertising and fundraising.

  • charles

Who cares, its over. Someone wake me up when the vote starts. Everyday seems to be new irrelevant news same old story, we wanna hear about votes, not what another senator or some random joe got to say about the euc. Damn

It’s all just phony gamesmanship. These people are turds.

  • BC Shelby

..the EUC extension was purpously turned into a political issue when it was kept separate from the December budget measure

The lives and futures of the long term unemployed and their families have effectively become nothing more than another “campaign expenditure” for the upcoming midterm elections.

Is this a sick country or what?

    • mrmano_0

the lives and the futures of the unemployed are their own. NOT anyone or anything else’s. Are you saying they don’t have control over their lives or how they handle adversity???…Are you saying the govt has total control ove their lives??..well??..Obama wants that…hmm…hmm…his plan is working to perfection..hoping and praying for a hand out is comedy. The unemployed are exactly where they are supposed to be and need to deal with it…EUC is dead….over..move on….the re-structuring of EUC after June will nail their coffin shut..then what??..cry to some other higher power and give that higher power the control…get bent, loser..

      • The Crying Boozer Tangerine

Then we end corporate welfare and see how your fake conservatism stands up.

        • Ray

Not how it works. More tax breaks for big companies. More profits as jobs are relocated to lower, more productive status. Soon to be thousands of robot jobs at a fast food joint near you and Amazon.com too,

          Unions are going away.

        • mrmano_0

…@ mrmano_0 #1 (response to my comment): Yes our fate is not entirely in our hands as the way the system is set up it totally discriminates against us on several levels. Or haven’t you been reading all the columns and editorials on the subject?

        1. there is still discrimination against those who have been out of work for an extended period of time (in spite of the “promise” big business gave to the President in January).

        2. there is discrimination against older applicants (in spite of the fact it is illegal).

        3. there is now also discrimination based on one’s credit standing.

Eliminate those and then we might be a little closer to an even playing field.

The days or walking in the door, asking for a job, and being hired are over. Employers these days love using the internet as they can implement filtering software to weed out applicants without ever havng to even contact them let alon set up an interview (termed the “Black Hole” approach by Monster.com).

Since you seem to be so “enlightened” compared to us, then tell me, how does one get around the above?

Go back to school? Well nice try, but the last I heard, most schools charge tuition and it isn’t cheap.

Go work in the fracking fields of North Dakota, Again ,fine if you are a strapping young 20 – 30 something and not someone who is 55 – 60 and is no longer able bodied to do so.

The only “loser” here, sir, is yourself as you remain totally blind to our situation because you have yet to experience it. You can talk big now , insult us, call us names, whatever, like some grade school playground bully. In doing so however, you prove you have no argument, no character, and no sense of dignity. You are a very small man who feels he has to elevate himeslf by spending his time bashing on those not in his position.

It will be interesting when the next economic crisis occurs (which is already being set up by the big holding banks), to see how you will react when you lose everything, for it will be far worse than the one we are still supposedly recovering from.

        • mrmano_0

          • mrmano_0

so you believe in socializing debt…like EUC..EUC pay back is not through is not taxes…its the States socializing the debt…which is akin ot your comment…but. Its Taxation WITHOUT REPRESENTATION…thank you

          • The Crying Boozer Tangerine

You’re the last person I need putting words in my mouth or spending my taxes on the rich. EUC was paid for and is now being stolen. Next time you have a wreck, reject the settlement because you want to call it ‘socialized losses’.

          • mrmano_0

Nope..EUC was not paid for…it was simply FUNDED….educate yourself on “Authorizing: legislation. Its one of the 3 types of legislation…Once funded, the monies are moved to the Dept of labor…The Sates’ Governors then request the funds from the DOL..it comes to the Sates’ in the form of a LOAN….read up on the reason NC no longer request EUC…BECAUSE THEY ARE BURIED IN DEBT…typical libard…gloss over facts. Vote Portman and Boehner out!

Start a campaign and use social media to get these heartless politicians out of office. People need to regain power of these monsters. The American people supported the extension of unemployment — who are these (elected) people to stand in the way???

    Enough is enough.

    • Jim Altruist

Too bad they don’t vote Obama out, the country needs jobs not more unemployment. So many on here bicker about unemployment but seem little concerned about finding a job.

  • Debbie Niemeyer

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS when you allow drug addict /alcohol abusing religious cluster effs in office. It’s that simple folks. We failed this country and ourselves by putting these pieces of trash in office. We need to blame ourselves … and then try to do something about it in order for our future generation to be better protected from this kind of Hell we put ourselves in. VOTE ALL THESE INCUMBENTS OUT.

Here is a link to a site which contains links to all the newspapers. You can email each and tell your story and ask why they are not giving much attention to this congress’ dubious distinction of being the only one that has not passed an extension when the long-term unemployment has been as high as it is. http://www.world-newspapers.com/usa.html

Dictator Boehner has taken over. congress has been planning this before the EU ran out in December. They voted into law allowing only Boehner to bring anything to a vote so I say they planned this long before it ever started

  • Tom Robertson

The dems are all talk and no action.Obama could have passed legislation for the extension but they are just using the unemployed as a pawn for the november election. He could care less if they get checks or not.

  • Ladyj

Let us stop arguing amongst each other.Please. Karma comes back. PORTMAN and the President both, along with CONGRESS have never tried to really push for the extension! If they had,it certainly would have been up for a VOTE long ago. This is a gold card to hold on both sides.Time is up !!# I look forward to whomever places it on table first with claims that they were JUST waiting for right time etc…. Voting and securing votes for the upcoming elections are coming. People and many businesses all over will continue to downside, relocate, hire, fire, bankruptcy. UNEMPLOYMENT will be needed! If they don’t extend .Many in Govt will also be unemployed! We the low level unemployed Will return back to work. Sad to say they will reap what they showed. It is Gods plan. We have and will continue to have natural disasters. KOCH BROTHERS pipeline love of money plans will be a No vote! BOEHNER will soon become a very disappointed, depressive man.Downfall.. God says repent and do good now.

  • FedUpInNJ

Portman is a do nothing politician only worried about himself. I’m not surprised he hasn’t approached Boehner, he is weak.

  • David

Boehner only serves the Koch brothers and only takes instruction from them. It is at their direction that he does not allow this to come to vote. Boehner should be arrested and brought up on charges of obstructing justice. He is single-handedly bringing our country down for his political benefit and the benefit of the wealthy.

    • Hamza Hamza

I’m unemployed and a registered dem, I will not vote for a Dem again, they are using this situation for political gain as well, O-Bozo hasn’t made a call about this either, I bet u if it was about Traygone or Donald Sterling he would be on tv hootin and hollering, Hey Bozo where’s my job where is the change, how come there is no mention of the number of our troops killed like used to occur under bush, the truth is under Bozo 3x the number of troops have been killed in his 5.5 years in office then has happened under Bush’s 8 years. I thought the war was over, guess they are just more lies

  • David

When the Somali pirates took American hostages we terminated their lives in short order. Boehner has over three million American’s as political hostages and nobody cares.

  • David

The unemployed don’t get their money but in exchange Boehner can say goodbye to the Boehner/Koch Keystone XL Pipeline. Let’s see how happy the Koch brothers are with Boehner now. Kiss that pipeline goodbye and all the money Boehner would have lined his pockets with.

  • David

Boehner is a criminal and should be behind bars.

Considering the fact that the real unemployment rate in the U.S. is about 20-25%, and millions upon millions of American citizens are destitute and living hand to mouth, it makes one wonder what the U.S. military was ever defending the U.S. from. Democracy and every man for himself, dog eat dog capitalism has done more damage to the U.S. than the taliban or Osama Bin Laden ever did.

ABC News reported today that the median pay package for a CEO is now over ten million dollars. And how about the American worker? Loss of jobs, no security, no raises, jobs being outsourced, cuts in benefits, longer hours for salaried workers and discrimination against the older workers. So our government is throwing money at these companies while not helping the unemployed in this country? How about tax incentives to bring jobs BACK to this country? But no, the United States is not going to do anything to upset China, the jobs will not be coming back here. Sorry but the American middle class is now at the bottom of the list.

  • David

It makes no difference dem or rep our politicans are crooked and are truly only concerned with their own gains and not that of those they are supposed to be serving.

  • David

If there was a way to remove the Koch brothers influence on Boehner, this would have otherwise gone to vote and it would have passed. Now it will expire in a few days and will have to start all over at square one. This has been Boehner’s plan all along.

  • David

When the people fear their government, there is a tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty.- Thomas Jefferson
Ask Boehner what he fears … his bottle being empty and the fact he will never get the Boehner/Koch Keystone XL Pipeline approved and therefore he will not be lining his pockets with dirty cash.

SCREW BOEHNER AND GO ON WELFARE PERMANENTLY
Enjoy many more benefits than you had with unemployment such as free housing, free medical, dental and eyeglass coverage, free cell phone, free food and some spending cash to name a few benefits. Apparently many unemployed people are doing just that, and what’s more, on many of the unemployment forums I have read comments by people seriously considering non-violent federal crimes in order to deliberately turn themselves in for several years of free room and board, free healthcare, and maybe even free cable tv. Can you imagine tens of thousands of unemployed hardworking Americans all over the country deliberately turning themselves in for non-violent federal crimes and claiming they cheated on their taxes, etc. for the free vacation? That is happening right now and will continue to grow. When it really takes off, even the corporate media won’t be able to ignore it or stop it. Let them eat cake boehner and friends have already let that genie out of the bottle.

  • satoshi n.

David please have the facts when you speak. Free cell phone no their is not one only lies paid actors by repub trolls., You can get a monthly payment benefit of $13.50 per month. Which will not pay the taxes portion of the cell/landline bill, or activation fee,or cost of a phone, on t.a.p.). After you pay 4 months of cell service, you receive only $13.50 per month only if your income has not change from having none., Yes after you apply initially it takes them 2months to process 4 +2 is 6 months later you get a benefit
. Free food is yes but on a per meal basis it will pay for 2 peaches and a half a banana.
Spending cash no I am not aware.
Free housing not if your single male abled bodied requardless if u cant finda job,yes if your at a shelter.
Free medical no even on L-0 level meaning 0 income, you still have to pay the co-pay BEFORE SEEING THE DENTIST OR DOCTOR. So your teeth will rot out of your head because you have no income and cannot pay the copay due upfront before entering the doctor or dentist. FREE eyeglass never heard of it unless your disabled and on medi-. David people with houses behind on prop taxes, having apts being evicted is generally what were talking about.

I find it sad that at age, 48, after working my
entire life, putting myself through paralegal school and working full time my
entire life at law firms as paralegal, legal assistant and finally an office
manager, I am now only working part time and making half of what I was making
and working half the hours. In September 2012 I was diagnosed with breast
cancer, worked through all treatment, including a mastectomy and chemo and then
lost my job in July, 2013. I immediately started looking and found a part
time job in Septemer, where I am still working, part time, making a fraction of
what I earned the past 15-20 years. I am entitled to partial benefits
were this to be passed. Does Boehner at all care about people such as
myself. My father same thing, worked all his life, retired went back to
work and than got laid off and he is suffering too. I have 4 children, 5
grandchildren. My husband and I have lived with our children in our home
of 17 years which we are about to lose now. I had to sell all my
jewelry to pay bills the past few months. Our daughter getting married in
4 weeks and we cannot even afford to help with her wedding. It is
sickening to me that ONE man has the authority to stop a vote that would help
millions. There aer people out there that are not just sitting arounc and
who are trying their best to find work. Give them their pride back,
help them out. This is ridiculous

WHAT ABOUT THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION BILL??? THE REPUBLICANS HAVE FAILED THE MORE THAN 2.6 MILLION OF UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES, WHO HAVE BEEN WITHOUT UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS SINCE LAST DECEMBER. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE INTENTIONALLY DELAYED, AND STALLED OVER THE PAST FIVE MONTHS SO THAT THE EXTENSION BILL WILL BECOME TOO LATE TO PASS. THEY HAVE SHOWN A TOTAL LACK OF COMPASSION AND COMMON DECENCY, TOWARDS THESE MILLIONS OF STRUGGLING FAMILIES..

  • Herb Smith

Dario, It never works to try to figure out how much some politician cares about some issue. And ignore their hopes for passing the extension (or any other bill) because predicting what the House GOP will do is all just a guessing game. You can’t rely on the House GOP to do anything. It’s clear that even Boehner does not have firm control of his House Republican caucus and doesn’t know what he can get them to do.

Listen instead to what policies the two parties support, and then vote in November according to those policy positions. Basically you’ve got one party supporting a simple extension, and the other party MAY support that extension IF their demands are met (or they may not vote for it.)

  • Annie Rose

Remember this when it comes time to vote.. Vote independent! Fire all these current assholes in office.

  • David

Another threat on Boehner’s life … what does he expect, that there is no concequence for his actions. I don’t think he has really stopped to consider the damages he has caused good American citizens. He can’t possibly recognize the number of cars that have been repossessed, the amount of money it has cost the banks with home foreclosures, not to mention the funds that are not in circulation with local grocery stores and convenience stores as well as gas stations and much more. How many more jobs has it cost American’s without these funds in circulation? The answer is it has cost too many too much for this to continue.

It’s quite a racket the republicans have going: Give enormous tax breaks to companies who outsource millions of good-paying American jobs to China and elsewhere, then try to deflect blame from themselves and their wall st. masters by telling anyone who will listen that the millions of unemployed just don’t want to work. No one believes their lies any longer.

    C. Cummings most of your comments are true but I find it hard to believe people are trying to put themselves in prison just not logical.

    • C Cummings

Satoshi n., My so-called “bs” is true. Even as we speak, there are people across this country deliberately contemplating various crimes in order to obtain the free room and board. As recently as yesterday, I came across the 3rd or 4th person since the beginning of this year in a UI forum who was considering that very thing, and asking anyone for helpful advice as to whether he should consider federal or state prison. He mentioned that he was sick and tired of eating Ramen noodles every night. Someone advised him to try for a federal country club prison instead of a state one. You say that it’s not logical. Are you also saying that many people have not killed themselves since the end of December because that would not be logical? It’s happening son, and it’s going to get much worse. This is reality son, and you can thank those pathetic clowns in washington for playing games with people’s lives.

      • wanda jefferson

I was on the train and heard a man about 50 or so say that he thought that robbing the bank easy. only 10 yrs in federal prision the other guy said he would rob some one rather than a bank because he need money to feed his invalid wife and two kids. aguy and several people gave the man money he left the train the next stop crying a big man crying on the train because he was at his wits end and was unable to find a job so yes I know that it will get worse before it gets better.pathetic government indeed.

Business owners want cheap labor, open borders . Hey U.P.S. delivery drivers Amazon is building a drone package delivery system. Drones require no benefits, wages and work on holidays. Just like Walmart is hiring less cashiers and more self service checkout. When I use self service check out should I get a discount because the cahiers former job is now being done by the customer? In Europe, where McDonald’s already has self-ordering kiosks deployed in more than 800 restaurants, back in 2011. Jack in the box is using self service kiosk just as computer are becoming more functional, Kiosk to replace workers, will grow.Home Depot has the self service checkout and sit down dining is starting to put ipads as your self service wait staff. More jobs going away.
The restaurant franchisee that deploys self-service technology will see a number of benefits as well. In actual deployments, owners have seen profits rise as much as 15 percent, due to the self ordering kiosk’s ability to up-sell the customer on items. In addition to saving as many as 40 employee hours per week, kiosks have the ability to generate a return on investment in a matter of months (from an article on how to boost profits)

Food stamps will get cut by $5 billion this week — and more cuts could follow

    By Brad Plumer

    October 28, 2013 at 12:47 pm

(“The cut is equivalent to about 16 meals a month for a family of three based on the cost of the U.S. Agriculture Department’s ‘Thrifty Food Plan,’ notes CBPP)
House Republicans, meanwhile, went even further, voting on a bill that would cut $39 billion from the program over 10 years, largely by tightening restrictions on who could qualify for food stamps:

vote republican all who are unemployed

  • satoshi n.

Read the table in Brad Plumers’ article talks about sutting off unemployed childess adultsand Encouraging States to end Snap for poor families that Cannot find work//

  • satoshi n.

The House bill would remove 3.8 million people from the food-stamp rolls over the upcoming year by making two big changes:

    – First, it would reinstate limits on benefits for able-bodied, childless adults aged 18 to 50.
The second big change is that the House bill would restrict states’ abilities to determine a person’s eligibility for food stamps based in part on whether they qualify for other low-income benefits. This is known as “categorical eligibility” and has generally allowed families just above the poverty line to receive food stamps

The face of food stamp cuts: Chicago, Illinois
    By Chris Davion
    27 May 2014
Over the past year, the Obama administration and the US Congress have slashed tens of billions of dollars from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. The cuts, part of an overall attack on the social rights of the working class, come amidst rising hunger, homelessness and economic distress for tens of millions of people in the United States.and if they are, it serves as nothing more than a theatrical gesture or campaign talking point. Democrats and Republicans all agree on the need for continued cuts in social programs like food stamps, even as the stock market soars to new heights and the wealth of the financial aristocracy is at record levels.
Eva spoke about her reliance on SNAP benefits and other social assistance, “I’m on disability. I was affected by the cuts to disability over a year ago and have had to rely on family members for assistance. Recently I went to get my tooth pulled, and they wouldn’t do it because I didn’t have a medical card.”
Potus and Boehner both, had agreed to cutting food stamps.
Boehner brought a piece of paper to potus said ,”potus sign this food stamp cut . Potus said people think I a m a advocate for the poor wink wink but I will sign this bill and cut food stamps. Next they are going after $39 billion in food stamp cuts

Enjoy what you have now son, because you won’t have it much longer. Even as we speak, the wall st. fatcats are busy planning the next huge financial crash in the U.S. , and it will make the 1930′s look like a beautiful summer day at the beach. All but the wealthiest Americans will be losing everything, and looking to the republicans of all people to save them.

        • C Cummings

You have not seen anything like what is coming in the very near future, and if you are such an affluent investor, why do you spend so much time posting mindless, poorly spelled comments on UI forums? Only the wealthiest Americans will not be losing everything in the coming crash, and even then, they will be surrounded by neighbors who are starving and desperate. There will be a complete breakdown of law and order, which is one of the main reasons that so many affluent Americans have left the country over the past several years. They know what’s coming. Good day Marcus/Sebastian/Valerie/etc.

          • mrmano_0

          • C Cummings

Dear Marcus/Sebastian/Valerie/etc.: We have all become too familiar with your mental illness over the past few months son. Unfortunately for your kind, the soon coming planned collapse of the U.S. dollar and economy will put you in the same boat as 99% of Americans- dirt poor. Neither party will be able to do anything, so party politics and party affiliation will soon mean nothing. It’s sad and amusing at the same time to see people like you bickering back and forth along republican/democrat lines over unemployment at the same time that wall st. is making preparations for the biggest financial crash that the world has ever seen. Play time is over son. The next step is world government.

          • mrmano_0

No one has become too familiar. There is no boat. there is no bickering. All is in your head and your own creation. you are your own enemy. you are who you rage against. Can someone locate the total $ that Congress has sent out of the United States in any form of assistance to other countries? I would sure like to give the American people, especially those that are waiting on this extension, that number. I am sure it is MANY times the total $ that we would draw on the extension, AND WE WOULD SPEND THE FREAKIN MONEY RIGHT HERE IN THE USA!!!!!! These idiots in Washington just keep handing our money over to places and people anywhere but here. It is utterly and completely wrong.

Another thing, this is unemployment INSURANCE people. Most of us, the American working class and our employers, have paid “premiums” for years and years without a claim. Then, we finally have a claim to make, and lo and behold, it is denied. Sure sounds a lot like the practices of some private insurance companies. Suppose “Boehnhead’s” house got damaged by hail and his home owner’s insurance paid for a new roof. Then, by some strange stroke of karma(lol), 26.1 weeks later it got hit by a tornado. And when he calls his claim in, the insurance company says “sorry your insurance ran out after 26 weeks. You have no insurance and thus no claim.” “No, it does not matter that you have paid premiums to us for 30 years and only had one claim”. CAN YOU IMAGINE HIS RESPONSE? INSURANCE REFORM WOULD BE ON THE HOUSE AGENDA FOR THE NEXT MORNING, of that I am sure.

UI is no different. This is so wrong. And the sad thing is, the idiots in the House keep talking about everything BUT this. Remember to vote them the hell out this fall.

LIES,LIES, AND MORE LIES, FROM BOTH PARTIES… SENATOR JOHN BOEHNER IS A SAD EXCUSE FOR A POLITICIAN AND A HUMAN BEING IF EVER THERE WAS. HE HAS SINGLE HANDEDLY DESTROYED THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES WITHOUT UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSON BENEFITS SINCE LATE LAST DECEMBER. HE HAS USED HIS POWER IN OFFICE TO DELAY AND POSTPONE THE EXTENSION VOTE IN THE SENATE UNTIL IT BECAME TOO LATE TO PASS IT IN TIME. THIS WAS AN INTENTIONAL MOVE ON HIS PART AND OF THOSE REPUBLICANS THAT FOLLOW HIS EXAMPLE. SINCE LAST DECEMBER, MILLIONS HAVE FACED EVICTIONS, HOME FORECLOSURES, BANKRUPTCY, AND HOMELESSNESS, WITH EVERY PASSING MONTH THAT WENT BY WITHOUT THE BILL. EVEN THOUGH A FOREIGN AID BILL WAS PASSED DURING THIS TIME, FOR THE UKRAINE, WORTH BILLIONS OF TAX PAYER’S DOLLARS, NO HELP WAS GIVEN TO THESE UNFORTUNATE AMERICANS WITHOUT BENEFITS. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE CLEARLY SHOWN FOR WHOM THEY WORK FOR, AND FOR WHOM THEY SERVE… AND IT’S NOT YOU OR ME. THE REPUBLICANS WORK FOR SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS AND CORPORATE AMERICA ONLY. MANY FAMILIES ARE STILL STRUGGLING AND FAILING FINANCIALLY DUE TO THE EXTENSION BILL NOT BEING PASSED. THIS IS TRULY A CRIME AGAINST THE POOR AND UNEMPLOYED IN OUR COUNTRY, AND I HOPE THAT EVERYONE AFFECTED WILL VOTE THEM ALL OUT OF OFFICE IN THE COMING ELECTIONS.

THEY CHOSE TO MAKE THE PEOPLE SUFFER RATHER THAN TO COOPERATE FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE PEOPLE. THESE POLITICIANS NEED TO BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE IN THE NEXT ELECTION. THIS SHOULF NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. THESE POLITICIANS ARE A DISGRACE,

what if no one voted for none of them what would happen then only the rich and the billionairs would vote and what if all the rep, seats were now democ, well this is just wishful thinking on my part but that is the message that needs to be sent that no unemployment, benefits no voters because it do not matter who is in office they are all crooks..

John Boehner wants you to die, and he will help you die by denying you benefits.

Republicans are trying to destroy the American way of life.

Republicans want to give welfare to corporations and stick it to the regular America citizen.

Republicans really are America’s greatest threat foreign or domestic.

The American dream doesn’t exist anymore. Our Government has used and abused this country to where our grandparents and forefathers would not recognize the place. Our politicians are asleep at the wheel handing over American dollars to foreign countries that 30yrs. ago were facing off with us as part of the Soviet Union and to other countries that if we’d turn our back would stick a knife in it. Yet there’s millions of American men, women and children who are in need being ignored because of their own political agenda. The atmosphere of our country isn’t the same anymore, no sense of freedom or the warm fuzzy feeling of life here. Leave? No chance, my family were early settlers here, cleared this land and helped build and defend this country. Blood, sweat and tears and It’s worth fighting for but the fight has to begin in Washington. These corrupt politicians need to hit the door. It’s time to find Government officials that will pledge their allegiance to America and it’s people.

The Republican and democratic parties, have both FAILED the millions of unemployed families without an UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION since late last December. For over five months now, the republicans have held the extension bill “HOSTAGE” in the senate, for political leverage, and party agenda. While millions of these families were facing EVICTIONS, HOME FORECLOSURES, BANKRUPTCY, AND HOMELESSNESS, the politicians were playing “party politics” and using them as bargaining chips. Both party’s have totally walked away from this crisis, preferring not do anything further more about it. When so many families are struggling, and hurting financially, and watching their credit becoming destroyed, the congress approved a foreign aid package for the Ukraine, worth BILLIONS of tax payer dollars. How can this be possible? What ever happened to taking care of Americans here at home? Both parties have shown a total lack of human compassion, and common decency towards these unemployed families. Americans need to demonstrate out in the streets across this country, and demand CHANGE. We need to REMOVE these career politicians, and replace them with “PUBLIC SERVANTS” again, that will truly represent the people

but the unemployed in ohio need to make a stand and say no to the rep. And vote him out and take away the money that he will be paid by us the tax payers and see how he would like it.900,000 is what this creep is making 123 day in action in congress and being paid this enormus amount to mess with us what a crime OHIO ONLY YOU CAN DO SOMETHING

The tax cut bill that was just approved is 60 times as much as it would cost to pass the extension of emergency unemployment insurance.
